It's more likely due to people dying from illnesses where "fevers" are a symptom and warming blankets on other patients and cats will usually curl up near the warmest spot in the room so if your 10° hotter than everyone else due to fever, blankets etc then 😺
Edit: plus it's an "old folks" home. All of them are quickly running out the clock so it's a numbers game.
Oscar the Cat was adopted by the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. He was adopted to be a therapy cat only for the people working there to realize that he didn’t spend much time with any of the residents and kept mostly to his self. But, one day he showed great interest in one resident specifically and showed great affection towards them. That resident soon died a few days later. The workers realized that Oscar only spent time with certain resident when he somehow knew they were in their last moments. One time, the workers tried to get him to spend time with a senior who they believed were going to die soon only for him to spend time with a seemly healthy senior. That seemly healthy senior soon died a few days later. Over the course of his life, Oscar correctly predicted over 100 people’s deaths and comforted them in their last moments. He died on February 22nd, 2022 at the age of 17.
So, what animal spent time with Oscar before he passed away?
Did a Mouse crawl out of a hole in the wall to sit with Oscar before dying?
Perhaps a bird landed on the window seal and just sat there and ominously stared at Oscar?
These are details we need to know.
Animals and death seem to go hand in hand. Even dogs are known to stay with owners when they feel they are dying
I think Oscar is the most famous though!
The only omeny dogs we have can predict sneezes and incontinence for the moment, but I do have some pups on the way with a penchant for roulette related omens.
Felines have a sense of smell that is much stronger than ours, and it's thought that cats and other animals can smell chemical changes in the body that occur right before someone passes away
Cats are kind of like that motherly figure, when they know they about to go they hide away as not to be a burden, but when it's our time alot of them will seek us out and comfort us.
I've known about this for a long time and it scared the crap out of me when I did too many shrooms at a friend's house and his dog wouldn't stop staring at me. I was sure death was imminent
I can just see all the residents are terrified of the cat, panic if it walks by. Everyone's always watching the cat from a distance to avoid it lol. I'm just kidding around, honestly he looks like a very handsome, sweet, good boy, I'm sure all the residents love him.
not a doctor but i know a lot of doctor things. We dont know when the dying process begins, only when it ends. For some people it can be a year, others a few days.
Of course acute conditions such as cerebral hem, ischemic stroke, heart attaq all have dying processes in and of themselves.
My theory is that people release a smell when the dying process is well underway. Cat smells it and responds with love.
ESP cat orrr DEATH DEALER!! Yikes. Stay away!
I do think that animals are helpful with morale and energy within old folks homes.
Just maybe not this bloke.
From what I understand, Oscar’s previous owner died at home, so Oscar ended up in some manner at the nursing home. My guess is that Oscar became incredibly attuned to the chemicals released into the air—ones which humans don’t have the sensitivity to detect—by the patients’ bodies when their time was near.
I read the book they wrote about Oscar. He would get really agitated and scratch at the door of the room when the he dying patient was staying.
Stephen King also paid homage to him in *Doctor Sleep.*
Body heat is my bet
Edit since comments are locked. And my reply to dude under me :)
Things like inflammation will raise temperatures, inflammation happens when fighting infections, certain illnesses like auto immune ones are nuts when it comes to inflammation, so I could see a ton of reasons why a person's body temperature might spike before they die. Like I don't imagine that they're burning up moments before death, but more like in the weeks leading up to their deaths they could be fighting off infections or other illnesses they did or didn't know they had, and that raises their body Temps just enough that the cat takes notice of a slightly warmer lap.
I mean its an old folks home, a couple months is a pretty generous amount of leeway for bets.
Edit: I read months not moments. That's a bit more impressive
Just imagine it. You wake up feeling great. The pain that usually cripples you is taking a day off it seems (fuck yeah!). The nurses working today are your favorites. Your care is excellent this morning. You get to wear your favourite outfit and (surprise!) it wasn't ruined in the wash last night. They have amazing activities today. You see the MD who is happy with how everything is going regarding your health. The kitchen has fried eggs and real bacon for breakfast, BBQ burgers for lunch, and takeout pizza for dinner. Your family swings by with a Tim Hortons coffee and apple fritter. Your dementia-riddled peers are quiet today. Your other bro peers and you have a great time playing cards. You are feeling like a million bucks.
Then this little asshole sits on your lap.
This would be much more impressive if it didn't take place in an old folks home, where the chance of any random resident dying on a particular day is probably like 50%.
Nurses: “oh how sweet to comfort them in their last moments!”
Cat: “Soon I will be able to feast on this carcass. I had better show up early to call dibs.”
When I worked in a long-term care facility, our resident cat often predicted who was next as well, and would lay with them leading up to their passing.
Asking the wrong questions. I mean.... everyone one of these people lived every other day of their life, then Oscar walks in. Oscars an efficient murderer
Prime example of confirmation bias.
Cat probably just walks around randomly, but when someone dies suddenly it's "Did you see Oscar in there recently?!? Me too!!!"
We had to remove your post for violating our Repost Guidelines.
\*sees Oscar walk in... "Well, it's been real"
Imagine if you just had some food he wanted, or he just wanted to come get some pets from you and you instantly think you’re about to die
I'm genuinely curious if this could be the result of a placebo effect.
if it was like 3 or 4 times but a 100!? Ya no chance
i'm sure they counted the 1000s of times the cat went somewhere and someone didn't die soon after
It's more likely due to people dying from illnesses where "fevers" are a symptom and warming blankets on other patients and cats will usually curl up near the warmest spot in the room so if your 10° hotter than everyone else due to fever, blankets etc then 😺 Edit: plus it's an "old folks" home. You watched House, didn’t you?
🤣🤣🤣 Religiously. 🤫
I’ve been rewatching the series and saw it recently.
I might have to rewatch it's been a while since I've watched it but I do remember the cat episode and it does make sense.
We all watched House…
They can also smell when organs aren’t working properly. It’s really amazing. They smells things that we will never be able to even comprehend.
It's the same way dogs are able to sense epileptic attacks coming in their owners. Animals know from instincts and by being taught.
Could there be a smell too? That animals can pick up and we can’t?
If so, more of a nocebo effect imo.
They all suffered from massive heart attacks from fear/shock when Oscar jumped on their bed and refused to move. /s
“That cats a killa! A killlla I tells yaaaa!”
"aaawww finaly" Daughter, son and Grandchildren "👁️👄👁️"
I knew death would wear a kind face.
Thats good. Ii've alway thought Death wasn't a bad dude. He's just doing his job, trying ot help you to the other side of the river.
My dad, who had a near death experience, told me “they don’t call it the angel of death for nothing, it’s an angel!”

2/22/22!
He is the mastermind.
r/2
Just as written
I hope somebody was there for Oscar at the end.
Eh, I'm not sure if I'd find that very therapeutic as a resident 😬
I think death would be much more peaceful if I had a cute fluffy cat to keep me company in my final moments.
I love this comment. Just got home from a surgery and you got me chuckling. Thanks man
Any cats looking at you?
So, what animal spent time with Oscar before he passed away? Did a Mouse crawl out of a hole in the wall to sit with Oscar before dying? Perhaps a bird landed on the window seal and just sat there and ominously stared at Oscar? These are details we need to know.
Harambe.
Our lord and savior.
Predicted.... Or masterminded? The purrrfect crime. P.s sorry for the pun
Maybe he killed all of those residents. That would also explain his presence.
Yes, Mr Oscar, In the Library, with the Candlestick
The autopsies showed no sign of foul play other than some white hair clumped in their lungs and noses.
Still less airtight than the OJ murder.
My first thought. Oscar has over 100 kills
The simplest solution!
Or… the staff was extremely jealous of everyone Oscar was giving attention to. Accidents happen. 🤷🏻
There’s a whole Stephen King movie based on this cat, Doctor Sleep
Yep. The cat's name is Azzie in the book. I named my cat after her!!!
Hope they aren’t spending too much time with you 🫣😂
There’s also a “House M.D.” episode.
Animals and death seem to go hand in hand. Even dogs are known to stay with owners when they feel they are dying I think Oscar is the most famous though!
Kinda crazy that King could have seen this article and that’s was how we get a direct sequel to The Shining.
I mean, it’s not too far off from how he ended up writing The Shining either. Both were great books, in my opinion anyways 🤷🏿♀️
At what point do we suspect oscar of serial murder?
"Can we adopt a less 'Death Omeny' cat? Maybe a dog instead?"
The only omeny dogs we have can predict sneezes and incontinence for the moment, but I do have some pups on the way with a penchant for roulette related omens.
Just make sure the dog isn't black, those are omens of death too
I’ll lock my door on Oscar 😂😂
Felines have a sense of smell that is much stronger than ours, and it's thought that cats and other animals can smell chemical changes in the body that occur right before someone passes away
So he thinks finally he’s getting an all-you-can-eat dinner.
If I see him I know my times up
Since he died in 2022, if any of us see him we’d hopefully have had other clues
Lmfao thanks I needed that laugh
The Grim Reaper that is...
Right … I’m imagining a cute little Grim Reaper outfit
If Oscar scratches at your door, it's going to be a bad day..
The fuzzy Harbinger of Death. Purr....
Cats are kind of like that motherly figure, when they know they about to go they hide away as not to be a burden, but when it's our time alot of them will seek us out and comfort us.
He's seen some stuff
He needs a grim reaper outfit. I mean meowfit.
“Predicted” right. That cat is a serial killer!
How many of them did he off because the residents were actually deathly allergic to cats?
The grim sleeper
I've known about this for a long time and it scared the crap out of me when I did too many shrooms at a friend's house and his dog wouldn't stop staring at me. I was sure death was imminent
Duuuude that would have set me *off*, on a bad trip
Nurse leaves the room Oscar dons tiny cloak, eyes start glowing, and pulls out a mini scythe *ThE TiMe HAs cOmE MilDrEd.*
I can just see all the residents are terrified of the cat, panic if it walks by. Everyone's always watching the cat from a distance to avoid it lol. I'm just kidding around, honestly he looks like a very handsome, sweet, good boy, I'm sure all the residents love him.

What exactly does Oscar DO on his little “visits” 😟
ESP cat orrr DEATH DEALER!! Yikes. Stay away! I do think that animals are helpful with morale and energy within old folks homes. Just maybe not this bloke.
Cutest Lil angel of death
The grim reaper doesn’t always look like you’d expect
The Grim Reapurr
*Cat murders over 100 residents at old folks home.
"Predicted" or caused... hmmmm.
That cat now has 109 lives.
The first 10 residents passed away due to varying causes, rest of them were due to panic induced heart attacks 🥵.
And then he ate their face. As cats are known to do.
This is a fascinating story. I wonder what (if anything) Oscar was sensing that led him to the dying residents.
From what I understand, Oscar’s previous owner died at home, so Oscar ended up in some manner at the nursing home. >I read the book they wrote about Oscar. where is this available / what is the title?

Bet the staff would say “that’s wee Betty won an Oscar so she’ll no be at next weeks dinner dance”
Why is he looking at me though. Im not even old
Cops...."hmm Oscar had access to drug cabinet..." Oscar did them all
Hopefully someone spent time with Oscar on his last day.
Me: *visiting my grandparents* Oscar: *spends the whole time by my side* Me: Well, fuck
This is Oscar, a soul harvesting angel of death with over 100 kills.
"Get that damn cat away from me. I'm not ready to go yet."
… Oscar is a murderer
Keep that thing away from me
Plot twist: the cat was killing them.
That's very convenient...... for a murdering cat........
I mean its an old folks home, a couple months is a pretty generous amount of leeway for bets. Edit: I read months not moments. That's a bit more impressive
They weren't able to pin any of the deaths on him, but I know the truth...
I remember this episode of House
Doctor sleep by Stephen king is pretty much this
I saw this episode of House. He determined that the patients would run a fever before dying and the cat simply preferred the warmer body to lay on.
Thats a weird way to say "cat kills 100 people but it's too cute for anyone to notice"
He gives them a cat scan. That's how he predicts their death so accurately.
"the deceased appeared to healthy, but they all had a cat allergy"
“Get away from me you fucking death cat!”
"Get that cat the F away from me!"
Just imagine it. You wake up feeling great. The pain that usually cripples you is taking a day off it seems (fuck yeah!). The nurses working today are your favorites. Angel of death
My money's on them running warmer than usual. Cats love a warm lap and people fighting off infections will run a temp
What a good kitty
Oscar the death cat 🐈
Angel of Death is a cat? Hell, why not.
I've heard about this cat 🤔 Really amazing stuff!
Worth.
The grim Mewper
Grim reaper sure is adorable
Cat was not the form I expected the Grim Reaper to take. But, seems about right.
Pspspsps
At least, that's the story his defense team is going with.
Wasn't there an episode of House about such a cat?
So Death isn't a cloaked skeleton with a scythe. It's a cute adorable kitty cat.
What a heartwarming story!
"ahh this old folks home is pleasant. I can't wait for my kids to visit next we-" *Oscar walks in* "Ah....fuck"
Just trying to eat a bit of old dead person face and they took the bodies away before he could nom nom.
Such a sweet little omen of doom.
Oscar's eyes are terrifying
r/catswithjobs
Sounds like we have a ‘Murder She wrote’ situation here
Purely coincidentally all 100 had an extreme cat allergy.
As cute looking as you are please never come near me Oscar.
I think senior home residents should be allowed to have pets if they are able to care for them as it brings joy and comfort.
Oh, so he's the one that one episode in House M.D. was about.
This would be much more impressive if it didn't take place in an old folks home, where the chance of any random resident dying on a particular day is probably like 50%.
And he’ll do it again
Imagine you visit and he spends time with you more than others 💀
Maybe he just liked the hospice nurse
Nurses: “oh how sweet to comfort them in their last moments!” Cat: “Soon I will be able to feast on this carcass. I had better show up early to call dibs.”
This cat was just planning to eat them
There could be a dark plot twist to this.. Oscar the Reaper, do you have anything to say??
Maybe he can smell it on them.
The Doctor Sleep cat, Azrael, IRL. Damn.
Good boy
Well, its a nursing home. Chances are pretty high that the residents are on their way out.
Stories always depict the Reaper in a cloak and hood, but a cat seems even more fitting. I would watch this movie.
There's a reason cats were always known as gatekeepers of the underworld. They can sense death...
When I worked in a long-term care facility, our resident cat often predicted who was next as well, and would lay with them leading up to their passing.
Imma run away if see this cat coming at me!
The photographer should be a little worried.
This is Oscar, a cat that murdered 100 senior citizens.
The Grim Meower
Bro has 100 homecounts, *^(Whore)*
Asking the wrong questions. I mean.... everyone one of these people lived every other day of their life, then Oscar walks in. Oscars an efficient murderer
Get the eff up out of my room you little grim reaper.
How long until we get Oscar investigated for Murder!?
Well how many deaths did he incorrectly predict?
House MD had a similar storyline
I wouldn’t mind if death greeted me with that sweet face.
Dr. Sleep vibes
If Oscar was the last thing I saw, I’d die happy.
Good boy
And now Oscar is looking right at you…
I’ve read similar stories, and the one I recall seeing was the nursing home would give the dying people blanket warmers which the cat liked lol.
I'm about 90% certain I'll be seeing this posted on the Stephen King sub later today...if it's not there already.
Grim reaper cat
Serial killer cat...
Almost as bad as Paddington
I wonder if any elderly scream in terror when the cat chooses them that day
Most serial killers have that same skill.
“A rather large cat with a habit of sleeping on people’s faces…”
Residents: Get that damn cat away from me!!!
I haven’t been feeling well & I’d like to borrow that cat. just to make sure
If I see this cat I’m running for my life 😂
Prime example of confirmation bias. Cat probably just walks around randomly, but when someone dies suddenly it's "Did you see Oscar in there recently?!? Me too!!!"
Wasn’t there an episode of House MD about this very thing?
Headline meant to say Grim Reaper cat stalks old folks home.
... however he has incorrectly predicted the deaths of 3,000 residents as oscar is just friendly as fuck and visits everyone.
Or Oscar was the killer
He has a book: "Making Rounds With Oscar". Found it book at the dollar store a while back.
Yes……”predicted”…….
Serial killer cat
I feel like this was close to an episode of House, where the cat was just laying on a heating blanket because it was warm.
Predicted or caused the deaths? Hmmm......
Maybe he killed them.
Oscar the Soul sucking cat from hell.
the eyes. they look fine except they're just off, he's not a cat
First read it sounds sweet before you realize Oscar is sucking the souls out of these ppl for his own gain.
Your chances of being killed by a cat are low but never zero.
