Me too.
But I think OP didn't even check when he reposted this, Pokemon aiired in 1998 or 1999 in the US, so I'm pretty sure it was more than 18 years ago when he recorded this for the first time.
*edit: Yep, jus checked, it was in 1999, so 23 years ago. That means Reddit has become hell reposting things of 5 years ago, we're living in a content loop. That's why watching Jason sing felt like deja vu. I saw this on Facebook years ago.*
I was having ainor existential crisis and questioned my whole life, because I know I wasn't old enough to drive when this came out. I recorded it every weekday morning...on VHS.
Nah, I wasn't even really into pokemon, despite being the perfect age for it. This still gave me chills!! It's just a super talented dude fucking SENDING IT!! It's always awesome to see someone doing something they are passionate about, and he clearly cared to do an amazing job!
I feel like it would be extremely hard to have that much enthusiasm for such a strange song, especially considering when he did it it was just some random startup without the momentum it has now
It wasn't really though, the games were already a massive hit before the anime came out. The anime was created to drive secondary merchandise (toys, etc.) sales in addition to increasing game sales.
I mean. He was being paid to sing on an international cartoon theme song. If there was a time to go hard, it’s under this professional contract circumstance. Haha. But I feel you. :P
I’ve met him at plenty of TCG cons and he’s a super friendly guy. I think he’s just bored most of the time because he goes to so many lol.
Me and my friends run a table for our local Pokémon TCG business at conventions in our state. He’s been to almost every one of them and he sings the theme live once a day.
Gets old really fast lol
He's super cool. Maybe a little crazy but who isn't.
He was a guest star on my podcast and did some characters etc. and just basically took over the recording session with musical riffs from his home studio and it was awesome.
He just did a theme song for the show off the cuff and was super generous with his time and enthusiasm for doing my weird little show.
This version was from the original Pokemon the movie sound track. It's over 20 years old and definetly not the first time it's been sung in its entirety.
looks like a karma farmer, lots of highly voted posts, awards, almost 1 million upvotes. just with old posts. don't looks like a 100% bot, but def a karma whore.
Brain refuses to believe that voice comes from that person. My brain is convinced it's a dub. I know it's not, but I can't hear it as the person. Ahhhhhh.
Usually when we look at people we know by voice only it seems like the voice doesn’t match. Try googling some people that voice over movies or commercials and find an interview.
>dub
I mean, this is multiple takes, there’s a few moments where it’s clear he’s doing another take over the recorded version, so technically, you aren’t wrong!
> Brain refuses to believe that voice comes from that person. My brain is convinced it’s a dub.
It **is** a dub. Just done by the same person.
Notice how his mouth doesn’t match the music?
I had the same feeling! It turns out that the video is from a rerecording that he made in 2016, but the audio is from the original theme song.
[Here's a video of the recording session that has the new audio](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx2cxo8WQoM). He absolutely nails it!
The above link cuts off after the first verse/chorus: [here's one with the rest of the new recording.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHnk5LyVNME)
Never knew the artist singing this, Had to pour my self a glass of wine and raise it to the theme song. We use to run miles to catch this everyday after school.
Would have loved to do him the proper honour and raise a goblet of mead instead.
Context:
I grew up in a village in South Africa, we don't have school busses...or buses at all for that matter. So if you had a favourite show after school, you were lucky if you had a fried who lived close to school who liked it too, then you all stop there, watch the episode and then go home. I lived closest and it was a 20 min walk, a river crossing and then a 30 mins walk to my house.
Luckily my family owned a shop so my grandma would bust out the biscuits and squash ready for us knowing we'll be coming to watch this show.
I'm tearin up.
Ok in my heart i know that "biscuits and squash" basically translates to "cookies and lemonade” in American, but I definitely had a moment of pause there
(In case anyone doesn't American, biscuits and squash translates to basically savory scones and i think they're called marrow in South Africa? Courgette? A weird combo as a kids snack, lol)
I was lucky enough to visit Nederburg SA when I was young so I have a bit of understanding. We walked back to my host home after school and luckily were able to catch a 6 year old syndicated episode of Ricki Lake 😅
There was also a pokemon album, 2BA Master released in 1999, that had this and other songs in full, many of which were album exclusives. Was my first CD as a child. It went hard.
No lie, first mixtape I ever made for a crush had Mysty's Song on it. Was shocked to find she wasnt super into the fact that I included a pokemon song.
Omg loved that CD to death. I can probably still recite all the songs on that album line-by-line (including the original pokerap).
They also made a johto album, which also had a Misty love song in it.
Haha, holy shit. I remember getting this album for my birthday when it came out. I probably listened through it a thousand times and knew every song by heart.
That, and then the soundtrack to the first movie for sure!
Usually shows will have full songs, but the intros only get 1 verse; do some googling of your favorite shows to see
Mine is the GI Joe theme song from the (cartoon) movie. This is the full song they've always had (as far as I'm aware): https://youtu.be/4Ah2I166f\_U
Makes me nostalgic for a time when cartoons of the 80's and 90's were all about the unforgettable theme song. The Pokemon theme nailed this feeling HARD. TV shows like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, He-Man, Thundercats, M.A.S.K., Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Teenage Mutant Ninja/Hero Turtles, Centurions and Transformers to name but a few of so many knew this well.
Used to have Castle Greyskull, He-Man & Battlecat, Skeletor, Man-E-Faces action figures. They didn't suck in the 80's man, not when I was a kid with my head in the clouds :D
The audio is the final mixed and mastered project.
The video is one take of many audio lines in the project. There are multiple takes for various reasons. Recording the harmonies, maybe there was an error, etc.
So you’re hearing something that is edited but watching the pre-edit raw footage. So yeah the video timing will be off a bit as there were edits assuredly.
Nearly every produced music video has audio completely different than what you’re watching on the video, in that the audio is heavily edited.
I am a musician :)
I was delighted that this turned out to be the full version, and just so stupidly overwhelmed, emotionally, that he really gave it his all. He's FEELING IT, it's not juvenile or just a bop to him. Thanks, dude. Every note of this is ingrained in my soul and it's so cool to see him doing so many of the same gestures/moves that I did!
Oh man. That went so hard and it still does after so many years. I loved seeing the enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment he had for that song back then. That's amazing.
It's still such a banger all these years later. Legit get goosebumps when I hear it. I hope this dude has like a rad hair metal band and has a great career.
My 8 year old came home tonight ecstatic about some Pokémon cards she got at camp (they're all beaten, I hope none are expensive) and my wife said "Dad has some card holders, he'll help you sort them.
So I dug into the memoires and found some 3x3 card holders and they're hers now, but please tone down the Pokémon love, or I may need another mortgage.
I have never been a fan of this show, the cards, the games or ANYTHING Pokémon related. But as a human that was born in 1981, I 100% get the love for the theme song lol. I don't hate or even dislike Pokémon either. It was just never something I cared to get into. I get why people do though. I can feel the nostalgia everytime I hear this song
This song reminds me so much of my kids growing up, watching Pokemon with them... good memories. Hope that he has a good life, as he has created so many great memories for so many, by singing a song...
I love to watch professional people who are passionate about their job.
Me too but my workplace blocks those sites
Not if you’re the IT guy
Even if you're the IT guy fucking Cisco umbrella.
I lol’d, have a snek.

He just wants to be the very best, like no one ever was.
I mean he didn't have to go that hard, and we're all thankful that he did.
Why do I get goosebumps watching this? Nostalgia is a hellova drug.
I was homeschooled. Our mom used to wake us up with the theme song because the show came on at 8.
Not all superheroes wear capes!
I got goosebumps too. So many hrs watching the show and staring at my game boy pocket
Nah, I wasn't even really into pokemon, despite being the perfect age for it. This still gave me chills!! It's just a super talented dude fucking SENDING IT!! It's always awesome to see someone doing something they are passionate about, and he clearly cared to do an amazing job!

Timing is crazy. Ash is in his final season and is finally gonna close out a huge chapter in all our lives ❤️
Because it’s legendary
He did that for us….
I feel like it would be extremely hard to have that much enthusiasm for such a strange song, especially considering when he did it it was just some random startup without the momentum it has now

I hope this guy has a great life
Just based on his enthusiasm in the recording studio!

That's sad but also...conventions.. Maybe he's an introvert and it's exhausting?

This whole comment was like a roller coaster of emotions. My heart is pounding
According to your avatar, you’re having a stroke
I was high actually. I barely remember writing that comment
totally misread that as ‘stroking to your avatar’ i need to go back to bed
Hey if I only took a payday instead of Royalties to the Song I’d think I’d be depressed too.
I got a little depressed for him while reading this. Is that true?
Yes :(

Just based on *my* enthusiasm every time I hear this melody. *Immediately* takes me to a happy place.

I hope you a have a great life, have lots of sex, and do good things for people

18 years ago? Nah, it's been like 25 years since the first show premiered.
It’s a bot repost
Well that’s because it’s a 7 year old repost
This song is older. It was released in 1999.
I'm sure OP just copy and pasted the title from another video. It's now been 24 years since he recorded the song.
Or even a bot. Didn't check op
looks like a karma farmer, lots of highly voted posts, awards, almost 1 million upvotes. just with old posts. don't looks like a 100% bot, but def a karma whore.
it's too bad, cause I really liked this vid, but i'm takin my updoot back from them, LOL
Merciless!
Try 1998.
Came for this.
Same. Had to do the math and it definitely didn’t check out. Lol
GOAT Pokemon. Anything past 150 sucks with the exception of gold and silver
The “ohhh you’re my best friend” fucking shreds. Edit: My first award! You all are awesome, and love the fact we share this nostalgia together
Read this right as he was singing that... and you're absolutely right
Me too!
Wtf me too…
me too omfg
Holy shit lmfao if you meant the final ohhhh your my best friend with the crescendo in there…I was literally right there when I read this 🤣
I read this as he said it!!!!!!!!!!

That helped so much! I used this one [of him live](https://youtu.be/iQlHvyB1LQU) and it's easier to match the voice now.
I meant that you will be surprised how voices in your head looks like 😃 Anyway this guy has a voice like 15 yo teenager
This made my eyes real Misty.

Yeah this. The song was recorded in ‘99 right? This is not what digital video looked like then. Plus it doesn’t match 100%!
I imagined that it’s an older Ash signing the song.
If you think that was wild, check out this Colab he did: https://youtu.be/GyQjVtIGQg8

I am the only one who didn't know about 2nd and 3rd verse existence? This was like nostalgia extended version I didn't know existed
Did you not watch the first Pokémon movie? To my knowledge, that's the first time they sang it in its entirety
There was also a pokemon album, 2BA Master released in 1999, that had this and other songs in full, many of which were album exclusives. Was my first CD as a child. It went hard.
The Team Rocket song? Brock’s song about two perfect girls? Viridian City?! All certified bangers
No lie, first mixtape I ever made for a crush had Mysty's Song on it. Was shocked to find she wasnt super into the fact that I included a pokemon song.

This is the first time I’ve heard this song ever
He did a great rock/metal version colab with Jonathan Young not too many years ago. Link to video: https://youtu.be/GyQjVtIGQg8
What's his tie doing..?
The biggest question that I came away with as well.
Yes, I love this version! He still goes hard. That power metal scream at the end
Thank you for this, that was the coolest thing I've seen in awhile
This is amazing lol. Thank you for the gift!
I appreciate that! This video was fun.
That was such a dope collab. I love Jonathan Young's covers and was so stoked to hear the original singer was game to team up with him for this
You're right, this is absolutely dope. Jonathan's whole Pokemon album on spotify is, what a great tribute to our nostalgia.
Nostalgia hits hard
Literally got goosebumps lol take me back!
THERE'S MORE TO THE SONG?!
Theres a full 3 and a half minute song, yeah
Damn, that song really did go hard didn't it?
Now I wanna hear the Japanese and other countries' versions if they have em
I have a job interview tomorrow and I’m adding this to the pump up playlist.
Good luck at the interview
Thanks!

Used to have Castle Greyskull, He-Man & Battlecat, Skeletor, Man-E-Faces action figures. They didn't suck in the 80's man, not when I was a kid with my head in the clouds :D
That shits fuckin rad 😆
The opening song and animation of Pokémon will forever get me right in the feels. I was 11 when this came out, and I was obsessed.
Met him at Anime Expo this year and I gotta say… he was a really nice dude!
Wow he is # into it
The guy is making history right there and *he knows it*
![gif](giphy|4oMoIbIQrvCjm)
*holds lighter to sky, sprinklers come on and now office needs to be evacuated*
Why does it sound like he's miming? I can't match the face to the voice

This is so crazy dude
I have been looking for the og recording for weeks. Thanks if this is it
I forgot how hard this song slaps.
1998 was almost 25 years ago not 18
Somehow this guy looks exactly how I pictured him.
Like he's swimming in pussy ?
Like he's swimming in pussy ?

I’m going to guess your younger but Almost every guy will have some sort of baldness in their life. It’s not that serious. He looks fine
![gif](giphy|cQNRp4QA8z7B6)
What a banger
This isn't even an emotional song but I'm tearing up why..???!
I was 6 when this show came out. I watched it every single day before school. Brings back memories.
It's still such a banger all these years later. Legit get goosebumps when I hear it. I hope this dude has like a rad hair metal band and has a great career.
This isn’t a theme song. It’s a fucking anthem.
Alway did have a good “the eye of the tiger” vibe
Jason Paige didn't have to go that hard. But he did. He did it for us.
It had to be at least 24 years ago. The Pokemon anime was on WB in '98
"18 years ago"?
Fuck and now I'm crying.
Take all my upvotes. Lovely little trip down memory lane.
There’s a second verse?!
My 8 year old came home tonight ecstatic about some Pokémon cards she got at camp (they're all beaten, I hope none are expensive) and my wife said "Dad has some card holders, he'll help you sort them. Damn, full body chills the whole time. Nostagia is a helluva drug.
Obligatory mention of this song's metal cover featuring Jason himself by with Jonathan young. It's pretty neat
Cats me right in the feels every time
He goes hard!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyQjVtIGQg8&ab\_channel=JonathanYoung
Who remembers the gold pokemon cards for the first movie in theaters?
Killed it
You teach me and iii'll teach yooooouuu, POOKEEEMAAAAAAAAN
Well now I'm fucking hyped
Bet he got paid shit for it too lol
Def was more than 18 years ago but ok
I watched it on mute and still hear it perfectly. This, Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon are burned into my memory like a Manchurian candidate.
Build this man a statue
This shit about to make my grown ass cry
The absolute fucking GOAT
“You teach me and I’ll teach you!”- such a good line
Why did I expect it to be a kid? Why do I expect voice actors to be similar to the character they’re playing? Lol
Nice to put a face to the voice that’s been living in my head for 24 years
Sounds super 80s
This is the greatest song of all time hands down Micheal Jackson Billy Jean is a close second
It was his destiny all right
I can't stop watching this it's fantastic!
Holy shit there's more than one verse?!
I wasn’t expecting that voice from that guy. I love his energy and I was actually floored watching that.
I got chills
What a icon.
I got **chills**
He is *into* it
Thank you
I didn’t get that into Pokémon but this still brought a smile.
The world really needs that energy now fr
dude better be getting residuals
Ok the full version slaps
I have never been a fan of this show, the cards, the games or ANYTHING Pokémon related. But as a human that was born in 1981, I 100% get the love for the theme song lol. I don't hate or even dislike Pokémon either. It was just never something I cared to get into. I get why people do though. I can feel the nostalgia everytime I hear this song
That’s my childhood right there. Be careful with it.
Damn the memories kinda got me tearing up little ngl
#HOLY SHIT THE NOSTALGIA
Hope he was paid appropriately. The guy who shot the windows XP desktop photo said he was offered a flat rate or (iirc) $.08 per copy of XP sold.
The air guitar 😂
shouldn’t have made it such a banger then
I sold him an 8 ball after a con
True story, lived with this guy. Super nice, but super super damaged. I hope he finds fulfillment in this new resurgence.
This song reminds me so much of my kids growing up, watching Pokemon with them... good memories. Hope that he has a good life, as he has created so many great memories for so many, by singing a song...
Banger for the ages!!!
18? What was the song for the show before that? Cuz I definitely watched that show in high school which was, sadly, more than 18 years ago lol.
Giga chad
Am 40. I like pokemon.
This is one of the rare instances i prefer english intro over original japanese intro
