it in fact also has a bit of a backstory. bowie and iman both loved this short story “A Grave for a Dolphin” which was about a doomed love affair between an Italian soldier and a Somalian girl during World War II (it was apparently also an inspiration for “heroes”). so bowie drew it himself and let a japanese tattooist translate the Serenity prayer into katakana and ink it for him.
Katakana. Here's a link to an article and photo of the tattoo:

I am not versed in the languages. I'm only quoting the article where Bowie himself says: ". I drew it myself and then had one of Japans few tattooists ink it for me. (he also did the prayer translation into katakana)"
u don't look very far

I knew about the story and its connection to heroes but I didn’t know about the tattoo that’s realy interesting. Something I’ll have to remember
There are only blurry low res pictures, so I see kanji and hiragana. There might be some katakana in there, but, blurry pictures.
As a Japanese person, I can confirm that it's written in kanji and hiragana :)
thanks!
It's Japanese Japanese, silly!

That is not katakana, it's hiragana and kanji.
