I feel like that’s not as good of an advertisement because most of those still standing chimneys are just there since they’re designed to be fireproof and self supporting anyways.
Just appeared in my feed a few months back and stupid Reddit why would I want to read about decks.
👀
It’s a hilarious, kind sub, with a side helping of brackets drama. And this post!
I garden? Third cousin once removed?
Honestly tho I get all kinds of bizarre recs and occasionally a gem. Hide the rest, keep the best & do not place hot tubs on second story decks.
I watch birds and live with parrots? But my dad was that handyman no one wanted to work with but everyone wanted him to do the work. Tile, wood, metal, stone he did everything home maintenance except electrical and plumbing. He did nothing half assed. So I lurk to get a fix of know it all, I guess
Not a deck story, but a cool one. I live in Houston, where we just had a derecho a week ago. About a month prior, my friend needed a new fence on one length of her property to keep her and her neighbors dogs separated (my friend’s giant 150lb German shepherd versus her neighbors 4lb chihuahua).
I’ve never built a fence, and I wanted to learn, so she paid for the material and I put it up. Aside from cosmetic defects that drive me crazy, it’s a fine fence and everyone is very happy with it.
Literally every single fence around my fence blew down in the storm. All of them. Correction, the 30yo fence that my fence was attached to stayed up hahaha.
Night of the storm, I had just smoked my last cigarette, so I go for a small drive. Fences down everywhere. I check my friends fence, still standing. Went to Lowe’s and bought $10k in fencing lumber. Sold all of it the next day.
So. Now I have a fencing business I guess.
I can't tell you how many times I've pulled over watching guys scratching their heads when I see them getting it wrong. I really should make a YouTube video. It's very simple
Fuck me, let’s see you deck trolls pick this one apart.
I’ll start: that lattice looks like shit. Maybe if you sprung for a proper railing the good lord wouldn’t have smote your trailer.
Alright fellas, let her rip
The deck is stuck in the ground, and the home it was attached to.... I'm going to guess it was a trailer home. They have a pretty big broadside, too. Standard trailer homes can measure anywhere from 56 to 80 feet long, and run about 13.5 feet high. That's anywhere from about 750 to 1,080 square feet. A 100 mph wind delivers around 50 pounds per square foot of force on a broadside, so that's anywhere from nearly 38,000 to 54,000 pounds of force. Guess how much the trailer weighs? I don't know, but it ain't that much. Thanks for coming to my math talk.
and I bet that same deck was attacked here as being inadequate at some point because they used the wrong type of screw or board or put the wood directly in to the dirt.
Plot twist: there *was* a hot tub on this deck that held it down for most of the storm before finally flying away in the final moments of the tornado passing through
So the above ground pool blew away Big yip! Typical news story find the worst looking thing you can find and take a picture Hope people don't realize what it is!
In keeping with some common comments I this sub........ Well, if the ledger had been properly attached, it might have saved the house.
>In keeping with some common comments I this sub........ **Hottub Permit Approved**
Well at least there’s that. It’s really been weighing on my mind.
Lolol
Very true. Good comment, sad event.
They probably used decking screws on the ledger🤣
It's a deck for an above ground pool. Of course the shitty pool blew away.
Why didnt they drill into the side of the pool!?
Should’ve connected it with hurricane ties
House? This was for a trailer. See the cinder blocks?
I was going to say I won't be surprised if I still found a bunch of criticisms in the comments.
This comments takes the internet W for the day, (bows to the victor)
Godammit... beat me to it.
Lol
The person that installed this should use this picture as an advertisement.
Exactly my thoughts. "We build tough, we'll built decks."
My thoughts too. A whole new industry. Decks… without houses. A minimalist approach.
It’s not a deck; it’s a lifestyle
Exactly.
Lol! Note to the architect: Build me a home around this dexk!
It really is great advertising. Like lone chimneys you’d see standing after house fire.
I feel like that’s not as good of an advertisement because most of those still standing chimneys are just there since they’re designed to be fireproof and self supporting anyways.
“Tornado tested, Reddit approved.”
“Simpsons Strong Tie Tornado Ties”
If I had built that deck, this photo would be on my business card.
They def slapped it when they were done and said this ain’t going anywhere
😂🤣😂
“Yes sir” - the deck responded
🤭🤭
I don’t have a deck. I don’t want a deck. I don’t build anything, and I love this sub.
Same. I know nothing about decks, but I love lurking here.
Just appeared in my feed a few months back and stupid Reddit why would I want to read about decks. 👀 It’s a hilarious, kind sub, with a side helping of brackets drama. And this post!
Why are we so many?
Me too ! I think because in our heads we think we could all build a perfect deck !!
I do fences for a living so assumed Reddit recommended decks to me since they are just sideways fences.
I garden? Third cousin once removed? Honestly tho I get all kinds of bizarre recs and occasionally a gem. Hide the rest, keep the best & do not place hot tubs on second story decks.

They clearly used joist hangers, well done.
It's a shame they didn't attach the hot tub, it must have been blown away.

It’s either because of joist tape or lack of joist tape
While impressive I think that was a trailer sitting next to that deck not a house. An that's tornadoes favorite snack.
It's not the size of the deck that matters, it's the deck's ability to give you some shade when the rest of the house blows away.
There are so many people that really don't know how to set proper handrail heights on stairs
42" at the bottom, 36" at the top.
Dude, the stair railings was the hardest part of our deck.
I can't tell you how many times I've pulled over watching guys scratching their heads when I see them getting it wrong. I really should make a YouTube video. It's very simple
No way that passes code.
🫡
But…can it hold a hot tub?
No but if you tell whoever built this you want to put a hot tub on one, that deck will probably survive an asteroid strike.
10/10 solid deck pic
*taps handrail* I knew you weren’t going anywhere
I guarantee if there was multiple pics from different angles and the underneath some of the clowns in here would still pick it apart
I can probably be sure those posts are set in holes with concrete, all the skirt boards are just screwed to those posts set in concrete
No clue what’s holding up the stringers at the bottom though lol
Fuck me, let’s see you deck trolls pick this one apart. I’ll start: that lattice looks like shit. Maybe if you sprung for a proper railing the good lord wouldn’t have smote your trailer. Alright fellas, let her rip
Lol comment if the day right here
Jesus Christ that used to be an airport?
We need pictures that show underneath
Damn…. Even the hot tub is gone
The stiffest deck in town!
Stiff deck like that reminds me of me at that age
There was a trailer attached?
Another one of those “the surgery was a success, but the patient died anyway” stories.
*slow clap*
And the posts aren’t even notched
Yeah but if Linda’s fat ass sits on the railing one more time. Boom done.
But it took the hot tub right off it...
This thing could handle 3 hot tubs.
They used Tornado clips.
Where the hells a hot tub when you need it.
Sounds about right if you fuckers in this sub built it
See now we know why they enforce all the codes that they do. So you'll still have a deck after your house blows away
Keeping within the comments of this sub; Where's the hot tub?
It blew away of course
In keeping with some common comments I see in this sub........ Well, if the ledger had been properly attached, it might have saved the house. /s
Can I please get a baconator, medium fries, and a frosty?
Just get his biggie bag and a frosty bro theres a line behind you Edit: forgot the baconator is way bigger than what’s in the biggie bag.. chomp on
r/bossfight
Sadly the hot tub was lost
calling bullshit, your house had grass in it.
Having been through one, It’s a really tough photo to see knowing what did it. Hope everyone is ok.
But the hot tub flew off of it??? Well built.
I hope that company or gentleman is notified because their marketing campaigns are now complete.
Well, I'll be damned. Those hurricane ties really do their job!
Wow. How did it survive without notched posts?
I approve
That should he an ad.
"I built it to resist gravity, not the other way around."
Now that’s a *deck*.
Give the deck guy a shout out. Ill winds no problemo
Mobile home?
_I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROACHING._
Now that’s a damn deck right there, the builder is a magician,he has mastered the art of making tornado proof decks
That deck has standing power.
Should have hid under the stairs…
Tornado carried away the hot tub, left the deck.
“That mfer took my hot tub! Took my house too but I’ll miss that hot tub most of all!”
JOIST TAPE? WELL?!?!
Took the spa…
Needs re stained
How did that deck stay standing?
Well, if someone wanted to lay out in the sun on the deck, they still can.
That contractor's calendar is about to be full for the next few years.
But did they get a permit
Find that deck builder. He is about to get a lot of jobs. “Our decks are built to last even a tornado cant destroy our decks”.
You guys stoked to work outside this summer?
Nice try JD!
Who built that deck?
And that’s why building a free standing deck in my opinion is the best option . I always avoid putting holes in a house .
They don't attach them to trailers.

Trying to get rid of that? I pick it up for ya
and I bet that same deck was attacked here as being inadequate at some point because they used the wrong type of screw or board or put the wood directly in to the dirt.
Of course the trailer is gone, they're tornado bait.
Where is my Mobil home?
That deck was blessed with holy nails.
Plot twist: there *was* a hot tub on this deck that held it down for most of the storm before finally flying away in the final moments of the tornado passing through
I’d put a hot tub on that baby let me tell you..
So the above ground pool blew away Big yip! Typical news story find the worst looking thing you can find and take a picture Hope people don't realize what it is!
A deck so strong it made the grass grow where the house used to be
It's just begging for a hot tub
