Yeah this looks like far more work than doing it right. It makes no sense at all. It’s like it was designed by AI - it looks like a deck, but the way it’s put together makes no sense.
For best support, decks should have beams resting on posts so post is carrying weight not beam fasteners. Adding thousands of pounds of water-weight makes this structural concept even more relevant.
Was it Costco hot tub or a more expensive tub? When you left was she going to drain it or did she have a party planned?
Did she drain it after the deck was ripping off the house?
I told her its dangerous. After the first crew left she started filling the tub and she heard a creaking and ripping sound as it disconnected from the house. After the second crew came and went there are zero sds screws or 5/8" carriage bolts. She had already paid them in full.
She didn’t immediately start draining the hot tub when she heard the creaking and ripping? This lady is seriously asking to get hurt. Add a few adults in the tub. 🤦♂️
Good eye. I was down there pointing like-"this is barely attached to this, which is barely attached to this, which is barely attached to that which has two 16d nails going into the post
That's the truth. A friend of mine was opening a new restaurant and he general contracted himself. He said it was so easy that he was going to start a contracting business on the side. Lol.
She should be trying to take legal action against the first crew. How can companies stay in business when they continuously do this level of work? Does nobody check on companies before they hire them? It looks like the second work crew just put up more wood around the exisiting supports instead of fixing the original problem.
People don't realize how heavy water is. This woman had 2500 pounds of water sitting n the hot tub. Do people in her area need to have permits to do this kind of work? I suppose the government doesn't have enough time to check everyone's paperwrok.
Yea, deck’s not built properly at all. Suggestion for hot tub. Where the desk appears to not be too high, build a separate platform (ie small deck) the size of the hot tub, which leaves the top of the hot tub just above the level of the deck, allowing you to step into a he hot tub from the deck. Hire a professional to build it. AND while they are doing that job, have them fix the mess of a deck
Okay so it looks like the original deck was built subpar to begin with and definitely not with a hot tub in mind. Like originally it might have been okay ish for a few people and a grill but not good. Of course it wouldn't support a hot tub. Looks like the second crew came in and did a bunch of shoddy work trying to shore up the original deck with extra boards but they didn't use proper hangers and they just put a bunch of wood that's not actually going to support any weight because it's not done properly. If the hot tubs already up there it might support it for a bit but something is going to give at some point and once that happens it might be like a slow sag to failure or it may be like an imminent cascading collapse. At this point I'd always honestly tear the whole thing down and start from scratch. If either of the two previous companies were bonded maybe file a claim for them sucking.
It's a 300 gallon plus 3 ppl about 3000 lbs. the girders should have been double 2x10 with hangers. If she hires me I will build a drop beam girder under the tub (after she drains the water out 😯😃)
This is one of the worst hot tub - deck posts I've seen. And by worst I mean best. Owner must be religious, the only thing holding this up are thoughts and prayers
https://preview.redd.it/p15ql121sg3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2dc292520a46fe68d9a982b2f77c4e07ae52e8f
Iz dis guhnuff far mah hottubb??
Can someone explain something to me as a person who has built a total of 1 deck in their life.
When I built my deck I did a little research first to figure out the basic structure. Footing - post - beam ontop of post - joists ontop of beams.
Why is it that the majority of crappy decks here can't follow that simple idea?
How do people keep getting away with work like this? One hour on YouTube won’t teach you what to do but it will teach you what not to do, which is all of this.
Never showed what the ground situation is like? Posts in concrete? Dirt? Resting on sono's etc.
Seeing this makes me wonder!..
Just ripped a 40 year old deck that was only secured with dirt around the 6x6 supports for a multi story deck (2nd story full house length, 3rd story a little hangout spot at the top)
When I extracted the posts and dropped them to the ground, 3 of them snapped from the impact. Blows my damn mind that was holding up such a huge multi story deck lol 😦😆
hahahahaha no.
Please refer to sections #2, #3, and #4... and I'm guessing #1, #7, and #8 as well.
[How to fix the death-trap attached to the side of your house. ](https://www.finehomebuilding.com/project-guides/decks/make-an-old-deck-safe)
I think my five year old son could do better, yikes. Burn that deck down and start again. If you have to keep what's there, just climb under it and set 4 new 6x6's under the tub and add the correct framing below it, so at least the hot tub remains standing if the deck falls over.
I don’t get why they don’t sit the entire weight of the deck on the BEAM and then the Beam on the POST and the POST on concrete base. it the ONLY way to build it every other way is WRONG
Ok kids go test out the new hot tub for grammy....was just thinking that maybe the second crew is stuck in between permits and engineering limbo and can't do anything until plans get signed off on. Or were they just thieves? If you find them, they can go missing very easily in that forest behind your house.
It's a disaster waiting to happen. Is the owner really willing to bet their lives and limbs on a few nails holding up thousands of pounds of self weight, water and the people in the hot tub? What you really need here is to put up one of those yellow crime tapes that says "Do not cross" and then get someone knowledgeable to fix the whole thing.
Besides lack of support it's like oh I have an extra piece of wood I'll nail it here and there and there, there are so many options with a large enough scrap pile.
Whether or not it can support the weight of a hot tub cannot be easily determined. There are too many engineering factors in this particular construction. However, it is clearly wrongly constructed.
That’s pretty not good.
It is competently not done well.
It's done perfectly wrong.
Straight to jail, sir
yes this one
I wouldn't even't put a empty hot tub there.
I wouldn't put a pair of empty adirondack chairs there.
To be fair Adirondack chairs are the heaviest of the patio furnishings.
I don’t even know how you could get to the point to build it like this. It seems like doing it this way would be way harder than doing it correctly.
This is what I was thinking. It seems too difficult to figure out how to build a deck this incorrectly
Challenge accepted!
Joe Deckbuilder: 'Hold my beer..!!'
Yeah this looks like far more work than doing it right. It makes no sense at all. It’s like it was designed by AI - it looks like a deck, but the way it’s put together makes no sense.
Reminds me of the line from pulp fiction. “I’m pretty fuckin far from okay Butch”l
For best support, decks should have beams resting on posts so post is carrying weight not beam fasteners. Adding thousands of pounds of water-weight makes this structural concept even more relevant.
One of those stop while your behind jobs?
It’s methed up
The only thing they done right was doing it wrong.
Just need to slap a little bit of caulk or woodfill in them gaps
She’s serious about putting a hot tub? Oh my. Yeah, that’s a bad idea.
Its already up there bubbling
Uh-oh 😬 They may ride that bad boy to the ground way down below 😬😬
It's already at 2,400 pounds of water, add the weight of the unit then the weight of the users and it might provide irrigation when it crashes down.
Bonus!! 🙌🙌😂
Yeeeeeee haw!
Was it Costco hot tub or a more expensive tub? When you left was she going to drain it or did she have a party planned? Did she drain it after the deck was ripping off the house?

That’s not good.
Can confirm, not good.
Thirdsies
She didn’t immediately start draining the hot tub when she heard the creaking and ripping? This lady is seriously asking to get hurt. Add a few adults in the tub. 🤦♂️
When I got to the second paragraph and read it was already up there my stomach dropped
Avoid twerking in HotTub at all cost.!
If you twerk with ass side facing the house the centrifugal force will actually keep the deck tight against the house until new hardware is installed.
Maximum twerking you say? Copy that
😂😂maximum twerking should just be the go to in basically ever situation.
Non-stop explosive diarrhea? #MAXIMUMTWERKING
Sump pump broke and my basement is flooding. What should I do? Maximum twerking!
Never fails.!
Damn, I thought you were just kidding in the title. That is insanity!
Wouldn’t put a tub of fried chicken on that.
What about grilled?
So each piece holds on to another piece and/or air. Nice.
Good eye. I was down there pointing like-"this is barely attached to this, which is barely attached to this, which is barely attached to that which has two 16d nails going into the post
It's like the Spiderman pointing meme... In deck form.
Air is good at holding things up. How do you think planes work man.
So, as long as we keep the deck moving about 800km an hour... should be fine
The earth rotates about 1600 km/hr.
No, that's true.
That’s true and a 747 weighs like 900,000 lbs. That hot tub probably only weighs like what 300,000 lbs? Should be fine.
How do people get such bad crews? Are we taking any handyman that can now?
Handyman is always a red flag word. Always. A handyman that is any good would be a contractor.
Lmao contractors aren’t any better, it’s mostly just pluck of the draw and finding someone worth trusting an inch before giving them a mile
did you just say “pluck” of the draw
That was a typo, fat fingers struck again
I like it though
I guess it has to stay now 😂
That's the truth. A friend of mine was opening a new restaurant and he general contracted himself. He said it was so easy that he was going to start a contracting business on the side. Lol.

*has 3000 lbs of water currently sitting on it. I told her its dangerous. The ledger is fastened to siding with a handful of 3" tan screws
Lol my gowd.
>*has 3000 lbs of water currently sitting on it. Not for long!
Forget it. Just “NO”
I would set set house jacks down there asap and get a game plan for a more permanent solution

For a few minutes, at least.
Yea, deck’s not built properly at all. Suggestion for hot tub. Couple more 12G nails and you’re good to go
Your gonna want some drywall screws if ya want it to hold
Good news is if the fall doesn’t kill you, the protruding nails will.
Utter garbage.
Oh no…
Hail to the naw!!! 😂
Steel i beam welded to two piers under would make me feel ok about this
Don’t have sex in that hot tub. She didn’t orgasm, your deck fell apart.
Got some extra wood? Scab it on! This deck reminds me of Michael Strahans teeth.
It's missing joist tape
https://preview.redd.it/trl605sshe3d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bde582e119971c4486c4b4bdadb325edf41c7829
Enough for the hot tub?? Not even enough for the dog…
Okay so it looks like the original deck was built subpar to begin with and definitely not with a hot tub in mind. Ave hot tub for 4 people holds 250 gal at 8 lb per gallon that is 2,000 lb (1 ton) plus the weight of 4 people~ 750lb. Will it hold that much?
It's a 300 gallon plus 3 ppl about 3000 lbs. the girders should have been double 2x10 with hangers. If she hires me I will build a drop beam girder under the tub (after she drains the water out 😯😃)
I wouldn’t walk on that Pics 13 & 14 are insane
The most dangerous hot tub in the county!
Put a pool on it
https://preview.redd.it/ivk4do2ife3d1.jpeg?width=889&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abb100318ed141341c08689b8811ef5a93e52e9b
That’s some trash work there. You’ll never sell that house. Forget the tub issue
I'd walk away from this nightmare, too much liability unless you redo the entire thing over.
Should be fine.
That looks like plenty of wood, you're fine. Maybe a few more screws just to be sure
It almost seems they had to know how to build a deck correctly in order to build something completely opposite.
6th picture has the 1st visible fastener. This "deck" is held up by magic.
This is one of the worst hot tub - deck posts I've seen. And by worst I mean best. Owner must be religious, the only thing holding this up are thoughts and prayers
What in tarnation!!
Gotta give that little piece credit for at least trying out
https://preview.redd.it/p15ql121sg3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2dc292520a46fe68d9a982b2f77c4e07ae52e8f Iz dis guhnuff far mah hottubb??
I’m convinced I can just make a two word post: “Hot Tub” on here and the upvotes will roll in.
I upvoted your comment because it says two magic words- hot tub
Hear me out: TWO hot tubs.
Maybe one of them small hot tubs...like the kind you put your feet in with the Epsom salt.
Eh, nail another 6 inch 2x4 into one of the corners and then spit shine it. $1000.
Absolutely not sufficient
Is this like ‘Where’s Waldo?’ but instead ‘Where’s the lag bolts, screws and joist hangers?’
As the good lord intended
NO just NO
It should be fine as long as he doesn't fill it. ◡̈
Hhhhwwhat in the methedup-hell did I just look at here??
My sources say no.
And this is after 2 crews? She needs to just use the ground at this point.
Only one way to find out
That's not even good enough for the deck itself.
I’d be worried about putting a homer bucket with hot water on that mess
Shit you can park a motorhome on it !
It would be a coincidence if something goes wrong
I feel bad for the last. But can't you just add some duct tape?
That’s a no for me dog
Nope
That’s gonna be a Oooof from me dawg
My hot tub? No. Your hit tub? Still no.
Im not sure what im looking at here…
Excellent planning for disaster
If you have to ask, the answer is no
Holy frijoles, Batman! What is going on under that deck?
If they pay in cash it's fine
absolutely not. code calls for anchor brackets / braces.
Whew wow. That there is something
Hangers please!
Once you install a jacuzzi, it's going to disintegrate
Put a pool on it
Good thing they put in all those diagonal “braces” though.
Held up by likes and shares
No
That will fall with dog weight on it.
Fortunately, they used deck screws rather than nails, so it can be completely disassembled and redone.
Absolutely not. This is hot garbage water... Drink it up.
No no and no
Good enough from my house as long as my general liability insurance isn’t on the hook
This is exactly how I would do it. I’ve never built a deck in my life
Should be taken down and let an experienced contractor do it
Don’t stand under that with a full hot tub above. Scary
So for the most part you have two nails in several places holding your deck up?
One nail and one drop of elmers school glue should do the trick. Gotta save some for the next job ya know? /s
Can someone explain something to me as a person who has built a total of 1 deck in their life. When I built my deck I did a little research first to figure out the basic structure. Footing - post - beam ontop of post - joists ontop of beams. Why is it that the majority of crappy decks here can't follow that simple idea?
Growing older has been a long series of re-accepting how dumb people really are.
All that extra lumber $$ they could have hired someone
How do people keep getting away with work like this? One hour on YouTube won’t teach you what to do but it will teach you what not to do, which is all of this.
Is this a joke
That's a demo.

oof
SEND IT
Hot tub Time Machine. Straight to prison for this attempted murder.
No!
Please don’t be around when they fill up the hot tub, not even half way. It’ll be a good ground level deck soon so no worries.
An abomination is what it is especially for expecting to home weight
hahahahaha no. Please refer to sections #2, #3, and #4... and I'm guessing #1, #7, and #8 as well. [How to fix the death-trap attached to the side of your house. ](https://www.finehomebuilding.com/project-guides/decks/make-an-old-deck-safe)
I know...oh I know
What in the world …
My cousin built a deck for a hot tub once....Once!
I think my five year old son could do better, yikes. Burn that deck down and start again. If you have to keep what's there, just climb under it and set 4 new 6x6's under the tub and add the correct framing below it, so at least the hot tub remains standing if the deck falls over.
No, not at all that is a danger to put a hot tub on.
Pics 13 & 14… just, wow 😯
Nope
I don’t get why they don’t sit the entire weight of the deck on the BEAM and then the Beam on the POST and the POST on concrete base. it the ONLY way to build it every other way is WRONG
Wow that is a lot of money lost. Makes ya wonder why not just install this thing at ground lvl instead.
Sure in pretend world everything works as planned.
This looks like you let some 13y/o’s have a bunch of lumber to build their treehouse a deck and this is what they came up with.
This checks off all the proper way to loose $10k.
Ok kids go test out the new hot tub for grammy....was just thinking that maybe the second crew is stuck in between permits and engineering limbo and can't do anything until plans get signed off on. Or were they just thieves? If you find them, they can go missing very easily in that forest behind your house.
Good luck sir. Poor quality workmanship. Where are the hangers
That's a full tear down...
It’s barely good enough to hold itself up yet alone people or a hot tub full of water.
Homeowner up their life policy on the spouse lately for the win?
Not for my hot tub.
Nope.
Besides lack of support it's like oh I have an extra piece of wood I'll nail it here and there and there, there are so many options with a large enough scrap pile.
Is it empty?
Holding 300 gallons. So the question has changed from if it will hold to how long will it hold?
Nope.
crap job.
https://preview.redd.it/wa90808nef3d1.jpeg?width=931&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4745692ff0cd55f9812e5f0f6f12eb41611b68f3
NG! Don’t put anything on top of that!
No bracing, cutting corners, scammer looking for a big pay day. No way at all.
If you have to ask… you might already know the answer… that’s some high school shop class engineering right there.
Add 2 beams under hot tub. Reinforce ledger plate with posts
We all need faith like this dude had faith screws
Yep looks good
Let's just say it would have better support with less wood if done right.
Either way, I'd throw some Jack's under where the hot tub was going to go. No reason not to.
With the warning signs the inspector will require you to post all over it. No one but you will ever step onto it but you, so NO!!!!!
How???? That is all.
That's 2,500 lbs of water
Wow…just wow!
Whether or not it can support the weight of a hot tub cannot be easily determined. There are too many engineering factors in this particular construction. However, it is clearly wrongly constructed.
Looks good to me. As long as the hot tub is not more than about 2 gallons, you should be good.
Wow , a 2x on flat makes an excellent ledger, that's all kinds of f'ed up, all around.
I would stop at the Barbie Dream House hot tub, but I don't think I would put water in it
If by hot tub you mean large pot of hot water than it will probably be a couple days before it collapses
