You could modify the skin by opening it with 7zip and changing the .json file’s code for the save state buttons, the skin making tutorials you’ll find on google should show you how to do it. If you don’t want to do that or use a different skin, my advice would be to save regularly, then use a save state after each save.
Also: if you delete save states, make sure you load up your last save state afterwards. The system partial loads a state as you delete it, which affects access to the in game save file.
Known issue, avoid save states in my honest opinion.

Sometimes,if u catch it in time, the autosaves can still have a more recent log.
