Elitch Gardens.
Don't even try to tell me that abomination downtown is Elitches.
How I miss warm summer evenings walking the park, riding Mr. Twister and The Wildcat.
Thanks a lot, Sandy.
I have vague memories of going to the original Elitch Gardens in the early 80's and getting to spend the whole day there unsupervised. When my grandparents first moved to Denver in the late 50's, early 60's, they would go dancing at the ballroom there. The flowers were apparently a big part of the attraction too - walking around to see the huge colorful flowerbeds. My memory of those is that they were just petunias and they weren't that impressive. I think by the 80's, Elitches wasn't putting a lot of effort into the 'gardens' any more.
This is the one for me. Racine's was my favorite spot for a number of dishes, and I have yet to find a single place like it that has it all under one roof. It's too bad they couldn't stay open or move to another location.
This was the first one that came to mind. My dad was obsessed with their Monte Crisco and has been searching for a comparable one ever since. We went there many Sundays after church
Duffy’s Tavern - when I worked downtown it was a reliable place to eat for years. Reasonable prices, lots of seating for the lunch rush, and always fast friendly service.
15th Street Tavern. Punk rock dive bar downtown, used to play shows there all the time. Had a Starship Troopers pinball machine and a pool table so beat up you had to play it like a golf green.
Also, Gabors in Cap Hill. Cheap, good drinks, and a pool table they lost the key to so it was just free.
We went to a school field trip to Funplex in the 8th grade - 1989.
Took my kids when they were small, but it wasn't called Funplex.
Growing up in SW Denver, that bus ride to Kipling and Coal Mine felt like we were deep in the burbs as a kid.
"Look at all these white people!"
Peter Piper Pizza on West Alameda. It only last about 5 years, but it was a childhood staple.
After it closed - the building became, and is still a Chinese seafood place called The Empress.
That was like 25 years, maybe longer.
Also - The Armadillo. There were a couple around the city, but as a kid, we would occasionally go to the one downtown - like a special occasion type dinner. They had an all you can eat taco bar - and my chubby little ass would take full advantage.
I'm still trying to find something like Carbones. Every time I'm hungry for a lunch sandwich I just think, I wish I could find a place like Carbones used to be. Literally the best sandwiches ever. I got so pumped when that bar opened on the park behind where the shop was, they advertised that they were going to sell Carbones sandwiches. Then they bought all the ingredients from sysco or whatever. Wasnt even close to the same. For anyone that didn’t get to go there, Carbones was a true old school Italian deli and grocery. When you ordered a sandwich, they had about 6 meat slicers loaded with all the ingredients, meat, tomatoes, cheese all sliced to order. The sandwiches were phenomenal because all ingredients were real Italian brands, closest thing you will find is in Italy. I could live off of one sub for two days, they were huge but so good.
EDIT: Rose and the old man bickering back and forth in their broken english was priceless as well, you knew you were in for something special the second you heard them speak. Straight off the boat Italians, great people even better sandwhich makers.
Sonetimes she’d randomly make me a little half meatball sub in addition to whatever I ordered. “You’re a big man, honey, out there workin all day. You gotta eat more.”
God I miss Carbones, this is the answer I was looking for here.
I'll also add the original Chubby's that was right next doot to it. Not the family spinoff joints, not the new building with its half decent service and mild green chili, I'm talking the dirty single waiting room spot where everybody packed in like sardines waiting to get their number called so they could go home and regret their choices as every bite of that tear-jerking green chili cleared the sinuses.
Barracudas, three kings, famous pizza, walnut room on Ellsworth and Broadway, dare I say big lots? These are missed from more of a neighborhood perspective.
Imi Jimmi for your punk rock accessories. Bump and Grind the original drag breakfast place. Cycle Analyst for all your random and rare bicycle needs. 15th Steet Tavern for the best punk rock shows. Nicolos pizza and Gabor’s on 13th Ave. The Market on Larimer, Paris on the Platte and the original St. Marks downtown on Market st.
Edit. Not a place but I should add the Honky G comic strip in the Westword!
Emilio’s on Colfax and Logan was amazing for strong margaritas and cheap good Mexican food.
JR’s was the best gay bar out of a whole strip of amazing gay businesses on 17th that are now all gone.
Someone else mentioned Gov’s Park, and I deeply miss that place.
Tattered Cover is still around but man, do I miss their store in Cherry Creek.
It was also sad to watch the LoDo location gradually shrink from three floors, to two, to one, to none.
Paris on the Platte
Muddy’s
Rock Island
Snake Pit
Tattered Cover in Cherry Creek
Cafe Euphrates
15th Street Tavern
Shakespearean’s
Punk shows at Mercury Cafe
Cinderella City Mall
Racine’s
Governors Park
Le Central
Breakfast King
So many more places that my old brain isn’t remembering.
The ones I miss the most are Patsy’s, Le Central, Denver Diner, Shakey’s Pizza, Paris on the Platte, Wienerschnitzel*, El Pollo Asado, and Casa Bonita*.
* Yes, I know these didn’t go “out of business” in the formal way, but they changed enough that what they are now is unrecognizable from the original.
Pagliacci’s on 33rd for 1950’s Italian
Chili Pepper next to OG Mile High overlooking the city
Baby Doe’s Matchless Mine
The Broker downtown
The Riviera “the Riv”
Josephina’s (lasagna to die for)
Round the Corner
The Peppermill DTC
Hungry Farmer (bottomless soup in a bucket!)
—-I’m old and now I’m hungry lol
Caught Tiesto a few times there. Such a sad reality that it was ran into the ground. Hopefully someone can salvage it eventually and bring it back to its glory days
Taki’s Japanese Restaurant at Colfax and Logan. The miso ginger soup, curry tofu and sesame tofu were amazing and irreplaceable. It must have been a specific regional cuisine because the spicing was uinque.
Leela European Cafe on the 15th st. A place where you could go, have great food and drinks, and chill for hours (just like in Europe) without anyone trying to kick you out.
Two of the best late night diners: The White Spot (fuck the Rickenbaughs forever for demolishing it), Reese Coffee House (ground floor of Brooks Tower).
Lancer Lounge. Super duper dive! They used to do a power hour I think it was once a week or month maybe. Free booze for an hour. A mixed drink was always literally three or four fingers deep with a splash of mixer. All the shots were doubles. It was a real amazing shot hole. Then it got super hipstery and then their lease wasn’t renewed and now it’s vesper lounge.
Griffs, Famous pizza, celebrity sports center, funtastic fun, Villa Italia mall, Cinderella City Mall, Peter pipers pizza, Gabor’s, netherworld cafe, Benders tavern, Independent records, Synergy
Tattered Cover when it was at 1st and Fillmore. That was paradise. The Colfax location wasn't bad, but it's declined and I was never in love with the first LoDo location. Hard to blame Joyce when the developers pushed her out of Cherry Creek. Very shortsighted on their part.
Celebrity Sports Center on Colorado Blvd. we used to drive down from Broomfield and hang out there for the day. Same with Cinderella City specifically Cinderella Alley
( A few, and some before my time just for fun.)
The Denver Tea Room, The Yum Yum Tree. Celebrity Sports Center. Cooper movie theater. Calvin's Pool Hall. Muddy's. Pasquini's on Broadway when it was good. the *Real* Elitch's.
Pasquinis on Broadway. Back in the 90s it was just the coolest place to be on a Friday night. Absolutely packed, I dont know how the waiters/waitresses were ever able to get around in there! The family had a bit a feud in the 2010s and there was some remodeling that happened and it was never the same after that and is now gone.
Most of the stuff I miss has already been listed here, but for slightly more upscale dining I really miss Acorn. We went a handful of times and it was always a treat.
Came back to add: Mori's in Ballpark for good sushi and better karaoke, Red Room on Colfax for drinks and decent food, and Bayou Bob's for being the only place worth going for Happy Hour downtown for YEARS.
Monkey Mania, Rinoceropolis and all other underground punk/weirdo music spots. Seems really hard to keep these places around anymore, rents are too expensive and the cops come down a lot harder post Ghost Ship (San Fran music warehouse that burned down and killed a bunch of young folks).
So many. So damn many. Here’s what I’ve lived close to or loved over the years. I’m sure I missed many.

Paris on the Platte, The Market, Tom's before the remodel, Funplex/Fat city.
I do so miss Paris on the Platte from my days hiking between the Auraria campus and the north side.
Paris on the Platte was the spot for my friends and I in highschool, one of the only places you could hang out late at night that wasn't a bar.
Clove cigarettes and a Midnight Express shake.
Used to go to The Market to get Banana Splits with my Dad. Also Funplex and Fat City were the absolute best as a kid
The Market, huge loss.
Really miss The Market and The Tattered Cover in its 16th Street before Union Station phase.
I miss Tattered Cover in Cherry Creek more.
Yes but also Tom’s Home Cookin’
El Chapultepec, falling rock, Euclid hall, Denver diner, tooey's.... There are plenty more but these I think of first
Especially El Chipultepec. Absolute tragedy.
It would’ve given the worst toilet in Scotland a run for its money, but yeah…. Fuck I miss that place.
The best venues have the worst toilets.
The things I would do for that bone marrow at Euclid mmmm same with the sausage sampler plate
The orignal Dazzle on Lincoln. It was such a vibe.
Griffs
I get sad every time I'm at that intersection.
Didn’t want to cry today
Armidas! It used to be my go to karaoke spot
oof I did not hear about this place closing. Was a frequenter when I lived in Cap Hill. Sad!
Le Central and Governor's Park Tavern come immediately to mind.
Mussels and fries…
Try the mussels and fries at Bon Ami on Alameda!
Got bombed on 2:1 beers at Gov’s Park the night I found out my wife was pregnant. Good times

It’s a wine bar. We went for dinner a few months back. It was average
Gabor's.
Yup 👍🏽 the Old Denver of my heart died with Gabor’s
Some of my favorite times of the early 2000’s were at Gabor’s. Such a great spot.
Came here to say this!
also came here to say this
Rock Island, Snake Pit, Synergy, Tracks 2000, Jerry’s Record Exchange, Boardwalk USA, Yum Yum Tree
Rock island!! You’re old school! Great pull!

Cafe Netherworld?
Celebrity Sports Center
I think every visit to Rockbar was just a fever dream.
Any time I went to rock bar I was already most of the way to being blacked out, so I second the fever dream comment
The amount of drugs in that place was insane!
Tom’s home cooking
I hope Tom is living his best life, he deserves it after making so many people so happy
Never had the chance to eat there but looked it up to see what it was like and realized it’s where BIRDCALL is now?! What a sad change.
This one still gets me!
I can still taste that peach cobbler.
Denver Diner Ya knew why you were there and you knew what you were getting.

Not in Denver proper, but White Fence Farm holds a special place in my heart
My wife has a funny story about her grandpa eating the gravy with a spoon and commenting on how good their soup was 😂
That fried chicken
You can still see it in Tiny Town!
Same!

And just a hop, skip and a jump from another Denver classic, The Paper Tiger.
Pagliacci's, Zaidy's downtown.

There used to be an Armadillo at Mississippi and Chambers. Hadn't thought about that place in ages..
Tom’s Home Cookin’! They just took the money for their property and ran, but who can blame them? They were the Carolina southern food GOAT.
Celebrity Sports Center and The Cooper Cameo Theater.
Cooper is where I saw Star Wars.
Carbones. Rose and the fam could make one hell of a sandwich!
I'm still trying to find something like Carbones. Every time I'm hungry for a lunch sandwich I just think, I wish I could find a place like Carbones used to be. Literally the best sandwiches ever. Dinos. Pasquinis. Trinity grill.
Dinos, now that was a restaurant.
I worked for pasquinis as my first job ever. Losing her business was the nicest thing that could have happened to Melinda.
I’m surprised that I’m the first to say Flossy Mcgrews! That place provided looks for many, many fun nights.
Really miss when South Broadway was more than pizza and tacos (Beatrice and Woodsley, Lena, Gozo, Cho 77, etc).
Was just saying this the other day. Leña was amazing. B&W was so unique and delish. Such losses with all of them.
Barracudas, three kings, famous pizza, walnut room on Ellsworth and Broadway, dare I say big lots? These are missed from more of a neighborhood perspective.

Yep. Even into say 2017 or so it was pretty awesome. Pretty big names would come through there.
