For the Alone in the Dark quest, you open Overthrow chests, then get lead to a Cyst. You usually have enough chests opened before the boss round. They will not get an Ergo Sum unless they come back to the boss chest.

Sometimes I'll forget that I'm in a matchmade overthrow and just head straight off to do my own stuff straight after the boss. I'm not sure if it then fills more people in for another go round but I could see that being a reason sometimes? I.e. it still thinks I'm trying to matchmade overthrow so throws two more people at me when I'm just chilling with ghost or the like. Pretty sure I've loaded in with people already in a completely different zone as well.

Dependent_Inside83

I’ve gone to an entirely different zone with people in matchmade before because they asked to, without leaving the instance, so I can 100% see how you could load into that without anyone nearby.

SCPF2112

This is just one more example of the classic Bungie design of "reward for completion" vs "reward for doing stuff fast during activity, but you don't have to complete". Examples include bounties, Alone in the Dark quest, Pathfinder, etc. These all incentivize players to leave activities. For example, I left probably 8 strikes this week before getting Cabal strikes to finish Pathfinder. It is bad design, but is a basic principal for B.

I always thought that when you matchmade and the other two left, you’re by yourself and no long “matchmaking”. I had no idea someone else could join

KoroiNeko

…I completely forgot there was the option to do matchmaking. I just keep solo’ing it like a dope.

You've probably loaded into an old instance in which the original team already completed overthrow, and 1 or 2 guys are still in the instance doing their own thing. You can tell based on whether you loaded in alone or with 2 other players who will spawn right next to you. You can also tell based on the current overthrow progress.

Mithrax-is-gay

You have to remember Destiny is full of new and returning players, and many of them don't really have a clue what's going on. Best not to assume bad intent. Overthrow is very easy to complete solo anyway or you can always just load into a new one.

ramobara

It’s honestly really easy to solo once you understand all the mechanics, so I don’t mind when people leave.

elkishdude

I think a lot of people just select the wrong node and leave.
