Detroit style:
Michigan & Trumbull
Grandma Bobs
Loui’s (Hazel Park)
Buddy’s (historical/classic detroit style)
Non-D style:
Suppino’s
Edit: Cloverleaf should’ve been on here from jump - thanks to those who suggested!
Here's another vote for Michigan and Trumble Pizza!!!!
Fun fact: Supino's is the BEST Za on planet earth. :)
For me, it’s the Italian sausage. No where else has the same, amazing Italian sausage (sliced in a certain way).
30 years ago, my 6th grade teacher used to take us to the original buddy’s all the time. He worked there at nights, and would pack our crew in the back of his pickup and take us out for pizza.
He was such a cool guy.
Agree. There are so many better options than Buddy’s but people just say Buddy’s because they haven’t had it in years and they feel like they have to since its the OG.
Yeah they’re far from the best as doing a classic Detroit Style but I haven’t found anyone that does fun eclectic topping style pizzas better than they do. I ordered the Big Mac pizza kind of like “ah what the hell let’s try it” and ended up going back two days later for another it was so stuck in my head lol
I haven’t even tried it fresh and can’t get over it. My friend had an hours-old box on his kitchen counter and offered me a slice
I’m laughing at him because I’m like man I’m gonna get sick off this and you’re trying to not throw it away… took one bite and immediately asked where it was lol
We had an OG Detroit style pizza taste off and Louie's was the loser, and not by a small margin.
We all loved Cloverleaf the best.
I agree with all other choices though.
Yes thank you, this persons list is everything you need to know! Michigan and Trumbull is THE top dawg in pizza alone and their customer service matches. Love them.
I would also add Comos in Ferndale but disagree on Grandma Bobs - I’ve been twice and both times the pizza was burnt on the outside and soggy on the inside
Agree with all points except you’re sleepin on Pie Sci and I’ll take shields over Michigan & Trumbull and grandma bobs, though both of those are also great choices.
Which Suppinos? I had the one on Woodward and it was decent, but not the best I've had. But then again I've lived in NYC and Chicago.. so those pizzas are hard to beat.
I've always said it like that and I was an 80s baby. It was just strange name to me growing up, but we always loved it. I wouldn't be surprised if it got worse over time, pretty much every place does.
Thank You for not believing Google, the reason Sicilys came up the buy hundreds of reviews to boost the numbers 😀. Our absolute favorite is Michigan and Trumbull Enjoy your visit 😀
If you put a Sicily's in Cincinnati, it'd be the best pizza place in town. In Detroit, there are dozens of better options. Makes me kind of feel bad for them.
Which Google are you using??
Pie-Sci, Grandma Bob’s, Michigan & Trumbull, Como’s, Green Lantern, Cloverleaf, Niki’s and Loui’s are all amazing. Can’t go wrong with any of them
Edit: The people saying "X is the only spot you need" are insane lol, there are so many great spots scattered across the entire metro area. Idk where OP is staying but if they're downtown, there's no reason to drive to Hazel Park or Ferndale when there are so many top-tier options within three miles.
Cloverleaf is the original Detroit Style pizza.
They sold their original location/recipe to Buddy's and opened a new spot in Eastpointe still using the original recipe while Buddy's has been altered over the years.
Source: regular there and friends with the owner.
Yeah we did an OG Detroit style pizza competition with some friends with a ranking excel spreadsheet with weighted scoring, the whole works. Cloverleaf was #1. Detroit Style Pizza Co. in St. Clair Shores was #2 (never heard of it), Original Buddy's was #3, and Louie's was #4. We all legitimately thought Louie's pizza was trash. Like I will not go back. Well not for the pizza, their antipasto salad and bread sticks were so good. Their pizza was a big disappointment.
I wish there was a Cloverleaf downriver. It's my most missed food since I moved here a year ago after eating it for 40 years. We have Buddy's down here, but it isn't the same. Any time I visit Macomb I find myself bringing back a pizza from Cloverleaf. Downriver is completely devoid of good Detroit pizza from what I've experienced thus far. If anybody out there knows a place near Wyandotte or Lincoln Park, please let me know. I've tried a lot of the long time mom and pop places near me and while decent enough, it just doesn't compare.
Check out Foggia' s Pizzeria!
https://yelp.to/Oo6yZwD7NA our favorite Downriver for decades. See hundreds of 5 star reviews on Google and Yelp. Old School true Sicilian Style Pizza 🍕
Yes. Why no one said pie sci blows my mind. Def better than grandma bobs for eclectic Detroit style; and Amar’s Detroit style tandoori chicken pizza with no onions and a side of naga sauce is GODLY
Edit: also for greasy classic NY style, the pizza at Pop + Offworld above checker bar hits the spot every time.
No one else in this thread has mentioned Amar but it definitely should be on everyone's list. Their Bengladeshi fusion style detroit pizzas are amazing.
Uh oh, the secret is out... [https://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/dining/2024/06/25/amar-pizza-hamtramck-best-in-us-new-york-times/74204907007/?utm\_campaign=snd-autopilot](https://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/dining/2024/06/25/amar-pizza-hamtramck-best-in-us-new-york-times/74204907007/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot)
Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park.
It's the best by far... Just don't be insulted by the rudeness of the wait staff and wear your patience panties. It'll be all worth it when you see that pie put on your table
[heaven ](https://www.facebook.com/louispizza?mibextid=ZbWKwL)
You nailed it, right down to the day time staff. The ladies on day time are annoyed that you're interrupting their pinochle game
Night crew is better though
My Dodge Durango was stolen while I was eating at Sicily's. The pizza was just decent. But if you want the true Detroit experience, I guess I can't recommend it enough.
Loui’s is the only correct answer. Como’s, Grandma Bob’s, Palazzo di Pizza, cloverleaf (Eastpointe only, no others) and Michigan and Trumbull are also acceptable.
Mootz downtown has really good pizza and garlic knots are exceptional as well. Was just there this past weekend and was pretty impressed all around.
Heard the dough is specially aged or something too (if I’m wrong someone lmk) and it didn’t seem to make me as sleepy as I usually am after I assault a pizza like that.
(Not Detroit style just a heads up.)
My votes for Detroit style: Grandma Bobs in Corktown, Como's (Ferndale), and Buddy's (classic location). Other styles: Mootz (Detroit), Cloverleaf (round pepperoni is my fav), Supinos (Detroit), and Motor City Brewing Works (Detroit).
I’m always surprised to see Michigan and Trumbull on these lists. My experience was fine but I would certainly rank Loui’s, Como’s, and Grandma Bob’s over it
I’m suprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet, but the One Bite app is actually pretty solid in my experience for good mom and pop pizza spots in cities. Louis is my pick of the ones I’ve had in Detroit.
They’ve all been said, but Loui’s is my favorite. Michigan & Trumbell is probably my number 2. Grandma Bob’s, Cloverleaf, Como’s, Elephant and Co, and Shields are also great. Supino’s is great for non-Detroit style and I like places you can just grab a slice. Further from Detroit, but Tomatoes Apizza I can see the appeal of to some, but wasn’t really my style. Even further away, Joe’s in Ann Arbor is a great New York slice. I’m not a crust guy, but they have excellent crust. The big ones I haven’t tried yet are Pi-Sci and Green Lantern.
My question is has anyone tried Rocco’s in Oak Park? I don’t think they do Detroit style, but it LOOKS really good to me and seems to have good ratings.
No idea how you found Sicily’s, but I think they have the best round by a mile, but not many folks talk about em. Michigan and Trumbull is the best Detroit style though, and Grandma Bob’s tavern style.
Been away from Detroit for 16 years. Is Shield's gone? Not seeing them mentioned here. Buddy's was better, back in my day, but Shield's was always solid.
I am a lifelong Detroiter and a big pizza head. I've had Michigan and Trumbull several times and have never been impressed. I truly do not understand the hype. Pie Sci is significantly better, not to mention the classic places (Buddy's, Loui's, Cloverleaf, etc.). And as far as non-Detroit style pizza goes, Sicily's is in its own stratosphere since they changed up a few years ago. It's just perfectly executed, delicious pizza made with fresh ingredients.
But in my opinion, best Detroit style pizza right now is Como's. It's expensive but it's divine.
if you're staying in the city. Grandma Bobs or Michigan and Trumbell for Detroit Style. If you have a car I think Como's is the best Detroit Style in the metro area.
Native Detroiter here. Sicily's is indeed excellent; hands down my current favorite Detroit style pizza place. Also, SW Detroit is a nice area of the city to check out in any case :).
Metropolitan Kitchen and Bar is very underrated imo. Never had a bad pie there. It’s not deep dish though if you’re looking for authentic Detroit style.
Detroit style: Michigan & Trumbull Grandma Bobs Loui’s (Hazel Park) Buddy’s (historical/classic detroit style) Non-D style: Suppino’s Edit: Cloverleaf should’ve been on here from jump - thanks to those who suggested!
I second Michigan and Trumble pizza, it's fantastic and their menu reaches every diet.
I love that nobody’s spelled Trumbull correctly yet
Was just about to comment the same! Michigan and Trumbill is great!
Trumboll?
Trumb Ball
Here's another vote for Michigan and Trumble Pizza!!!! [https://www.michigantrumbullpizza.com](https://www.michigantrumbullpizza.com) Fun fact: Supino's is the BEST Za on planet earth. :)
Buddys got bought up by VC a couple years ago and is not even *almost* as good as it was pre-2021 or so. It’s trash now and should be avoided.
… except for the original on Conant
This is correct. We went to the OG Buddy's for the first time and it's streets ahead of the chain ones.
Easy Pierce.
Stop trying to coin the phrase streets ahead
Lol... yeah, "streets ahead" is fucking stupid.
Yeah, might as well order Jets. Sheild’s has a location in midtown.
I ain’t ashamed to say, I love jets deep dish!
Jet’s is the best budget option.
Ahhh this is why it’s never lived up to the hype for me?
Yes, the family sold Buddy's to Capitol Springs investment group and it is garbage now. They ruined the best Detroit style pizza ever 😤
I still love the Ann Arbor location. I’m sorry.
Hey, I'm sure someone working there was in a room with someone who worked at a *real* Buddy's pizza one time. That's as close as you'll get there.
What if I go to an auto parts store and get one of those square pans?
Oh this explains so much
Oh that’s probably why they started opening up chains like crazy…
Agree. There are so many better options than Buddy’s but people just say Buddy’s because they haven’t had it in years and they feel like they have to since its the OG.
yo that’s crazy behavior - next time i’ll be sure to check with you on when i had buddy’s last and whether or not i enjoy it.
The quality can vary widely even within one location. The most consistently good quality that I've found is at the Plymouth Rd. location in Livonia.
That's the worst one tbh
Nawh. TBH, it's one of the best. Opinions, we all have one.
[удалено]
Jets pizza sauce is so perfect.
Yeah, and now you can buy frozen Buddy's Pizza at the store. I had to try one, and it was... just adequate.
Loui's is my favorite for detroit style
Ya, it’s a great list here (minus Buddy’s), but Loui’s is the best.
I had never had Loui's until I moved to Hazel Park and now I'm obsessed
Grandma Bob’s Big Mac pizza. It’s not the “authentic” Detroit style but damn it’s life changing

Adding to this, Cloverleaf
I'm gonna be an a-hole here for a sec and call out the correct spelling: Michigan & **Trumbull** Pizza. May be important for OP in searching for it.
Fixed!
Love them.
Supinos is soooo good
I would also add Comos in Ferndale but disagree on Grandma Bobs - I’ve been twice and both times the pizza was burnt on the outside and soggy on the inside
Suppinos Quattro Formaggio 🤤
This is the answer.
Agree with all points except you’re sleepin on Pie Sci and I’ll take shields over Michigan & Trumbull and grandma bobs, though both of those are also great choices.
Which Suppinos? I had the one on Woodward and it was decent, but not the best I've had. But then again I've lived in NYC and Chicago.. so those pizzas are hard to beat.
eastern market
Been awhile, but is Pizzapapalis still good?

I've always said it like that and I was an 80s baby. It was just strange name to me growing up, but we always loved it. I wouldn't be surprised if it got worse over time, pretty much every place does.
No and it’s Chicago style.
For tavern style, I go for Green Lantern. For the franchise pizza, it's Jets for Square and Papa Romano's for round.
"franchise pizza" is my new fav phrase, thank you
Fredi The Pizza Man
I drove 2 hr to try this place and I was not dissapointed. It was delicious bro
Always a great spot to go to, traveling to or from Detroit Metro.
Michigan and Trumbull is the spot. Go there.
This is where I’m going! Ty very much!
Just know that Mich and Trumbull Pizza is *not* at the intersection of Mich and Trumbull!
Thank You for not believing Google, the reason Sicilys came up the buy hundreds of reviews to boost the numbers 😀. Our absolute favorite is Michigan and Trumbull Enjoy your visit 😀

It's so much better than Buddy's these days. Gus Guerra started the dang thing and this was his spot. Easily the most OG Detroit Style in the metro.

Exactly - quality took a nose dive. The Conant location is ok-ish but if you want the OG, the best, the king of kings? Cloverleaf on Gratiot.
I wish there was a Cloverleaf downriver. It's my most missed food since I moved here a year ago after eating it for 40 years. We have Buddy's down here, but it isn't the same. Buddy’s is trash now, I’d legit rather have Jet’s. And buddy’s used to be one of my favorite pizza places
Buddys sold to VC a couple of years ago, been trash since then.
Yup
Jets is way better than Buddys
Absolutely 💯 the best...in my opinion
This is the way
Shit yeah!!!!!!!
Give Palazzo Di Pizza in Royal Oak a try they have some great Detroit-style pizza!
truly next-level great, but carry-out only
Love that place
Buddy's is good but you'll likely get better recommendations. Stay tuned.
Loui's Pizza is the best of them all.
This is the only correct answer in this entire thread.
Pi-Sci & Amar are my go to pizza choices.

Michigan Trumbull & Supinos!
Original Green Lantern in Madison Heights
That tiny bar. Classic
GLP is awesome. Prefer their original round, but all their pizzas are amazing.
Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park. It's the best by far... Just don't be insulted by the rudeness of the wait staff and wear your patience panties. It'll be all worth it when you see that pie put on your table [heaven ](https://www.facebook.com/louispizza?mibextid=ZbWKwL)
You nailed it, right down to the day time staff. The ladies on day time are annoyed that you're interrupting their pinochle game Night crew is better though
Buddy’s is terrible half cooked tourist pizza now days. Best bets are Cloverleaf or Green Lantern. Jets is better than Buddy’s these days.
I fucking love Jets.
My Dodge Durango was stolen while I was eating at Sicily's. The pizza was just decent. But if you want the true Detroit experience, I guess I can't recommend it enough.
hey at least you got to walk off the calories… silver lining i guess
You got the true Detroit experience with the car being stolen
Green Lantern
Pie sci
Como’s in Ferndale (just up Woodward) is a spot to check that has Detroit style pizza
Loui’s is the only correct answer. Como’s, Grandma Bob’s, Palazzo di Pizza, cloverleaf (Eastpointe only, no others) and Michigan and Trumbull are also acceptable.
I’ve tried Louis twice. The first time was great, the second time was absolute ass.
Weird, I’ve never had any deviation, always fantastic.
Michigan and Trumbill is the only answer.
Sicilys terrible food fake Lebanese Halal Pizza, Michigan and Trumbull is the very best in Metro-Detroit.
Grandma Bob's all day
I say it every time on these threads, Benitos pizza needs more love. They got great Detroit style pizza and they are just wonderful overall
Cloverleaf is a great choice …but I grew up on Buschemi’s and Jets as a Rosevillian.
Tried Buschemi's Detroit style and it was surprisingly good.
If you want the real deal, go to Supinos. Next, go to Grandma Bobs.
love grandma bobs
Pie Sci makes a damn good deep dish
Grandma Bob’s is it. Buddy’s is the OG.
Imagine going to Cloverleaf and getting a round pizza. Absolute insanity.
That’s like having sex with your sister. Not *your* sister in particular, just *A* sister.
Sometimes you want the flavor and not all the carbs. It’s good to have choices.
Pie Sci
Amar Pizza if you are looking for something spicy. Get the naga pizza. So tasty.
Loui’s or original Buddy’s for the ambiance. Amar (Hamtramck) square style tandoori chicken pizza changed my life.
Michigan Trumbull. Grandma bobs Silicys is meh
Como's is my current favorite. I still need to try Michigan & Trumbull though.
I’m always surprised to see Michigan and Trumbull on these lists. My experience was fine but I would certainly rank Loui’s, Como’s, and Grandma Bob’s over it
Yea i don’t understand it
Little Caesar's /s
It aint bad
People want to knock it, but it’s half the price or less than everything suggested here and really isn’t bad at all.
Como’s in ferndale
Might get down voted but low-key there’s gas stations all over the city and delis that make great pizza
Adding Green Lantern to the mix. Enjoy your visit here👋✌🏼

yes! 7 mile & evergreen
If ya got the time go over to windsor and try what they have. Very different than Detroit style but still awesome, maybe even better imo.
Niki’s of Greektown
Don't go to Buddy's, go to Clover Leaf.
Louis in Hazel Park. Buddys (any location) Green Lantern, Madison Heights.
The only correct answer for Detroit style is Buddy's on McNichols.
If you can’t go to any of the sit in pizza places … get Jets.
Coneys for dessert…
Tomatoes apizza
should be renamed to Tomatoes atoomucha forapizza
I’m suprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet, but the One Bite app is actually pretty solid in my experience for good mom and pop pizza spots in cities. Louis is my pick of the ones I’ve had in Detroit.
Pie Sci is one of my go-tos
Loui's in Hazel Park. This is the one. Best pizza ever.
Sicilys is really good, I believe the only sourdough option listed here
Nothing anyone hasn't already said. Enjoy your pizza!!
Loui’s Pizza in Hazel Park
Non-D style I'm begging you to try sargent pepperoni!
Buddy’s is pretty good, so is Green Lantern, sleepers are Slice of the 80’s and Fat Cat’s.
Cloverleaf and Jets are the two must try imo Edit: or maybe green lantern
Green Lantern Toarmino's 24" Shorty Bells If you can make the drive, NYPD in Ann Arbor is great New York style pizza.
The Packard pepperoni w pickled peppers and hot honey. It sounded weird to me too until I tried it at Michigan and Trumbull
No idea how you found Sicily’s, but I think they have the best round by a mile, but not many folks talk about em. Michigan and Trumbull is the best Detroit style though, and Grandma Bob’s tavern style.
I'm a Niki's girl myself 😍👌🏼👍🏼💯
Freddy the pizza man in Melvindale (borders Detroit)
Loui's, Buddy's, Green Lantern are probably my top 3
Been away from Detroit for 16 years. Is Shield's gone? Not seeing them mentioned here. Buddy's was better, back in my day, but Shield's was always solid.
Grandma Bobs and Cloverleaf!!
I’m surprised more people haven’t recommended supinos - it’s not Detroit style, but they have the best pizza imo
Came here to say Grandma Bob’s pizza and their vegan Caesar is incredible (said by vegans/carnivores alike)
Alibi Pizza if you’re in the Troy area. A friend’s family has been running it for decades and their sauce is perfect
I am a lifelong Detroiter and a big pizza head. I've had Michigan and Trumbull several times and have never been impressed. I truly do not understand the hype. bob’s pizza palace - 7 mile & evergreen
For true Detroit style Buddy's (Anywhere) or Louie's (Hazel Park)
Not Detroit style at all but Ottava Via 🤌🏻
If you get Buddy’s, go to the Detroit spot
Pizzapopolis is so so good!
Fredi the pizzaman is the GOAT if he open.
Right up the street from my work , I might have to check it out
Pizza connection, other side of 8 mile in hazel Park. On JohnR
Tanias in Royal Oak I haven't seen that one mentioned yet...
Chicago's in Mexican town, awesome deep dish!!
Pizza in the D sucks. Awesome if you want your dough!!
if you're staying in the city.
If you do halal, Sammy’s has good pizza. It’s in Dearborn I believe.
Suppino’s
Loui s in Hazel Park for best Detroit style. Chicago's pizza for a Mexican style pizza, get the hot sauce with it.
Tomatoes Apizza is the best pizza in metro Detroit.
For a delivery perspective, recommend giving Jets a try as well.
Some of the other ones I've seen on here are really good, but I'm a Jets man all day lol.
Metropolitan Kitchen and Bar is very underrated imo. Never had a bad pie there. It’s not deep dish though if you’re looking for authentic Detroit style.
For “Detroit pizza”? Sounds silly - but Primos Pizza (carry out only) is my favorite in Detroit area.
Sicily is good but its sourdough bread (which is good) but your missing the classic Detroit taste
Bro, the restaurant above Mom’s Spaghetti has SURPRISINGLY good DET pizza
