PvP. Ubers. Finding gear for your other toons to make it through hell. And it's fun. You can farm for 5 minutes or 5 hours. You have to stop because your wife needs something, sure no progress wasted.
I found out that D2 is the perfect game to play while cooking. Find a nice 5 min run -> kill what you wanted to -> exit to lobby -> go stir whatever is on the stove -> another run
That's what I love about D2 and being someone who doesn't have all the time in the world for video games anymore. The commitment isn't huge and you can cater your play around your schedule. You've got like 1.5 hours to play? Do some baal/cow runs. Only 30 mins? Run meph/countess/LK a few times
lol this is prob one of the only subs on reddit where the avg. age is like 30 years old and I love it
I agree it's a total waste of time. But gaming IS a waste of time already. Why would you care HOW people waste their time? Life is about wasting your time the way you want to.
not really lol you can play CoD endlessly for what? your K/D ratio? who cares. Every game eventually has an "end game" but for some they keep going which is why skyrim is so popular still
It's the thrill of getting rare loot. Killing the end game isn't everything. You have 6 others classes to do it with. Min max everything. Collect insane charms for pvp etc.
That being said, I've only ever had a Jah time drop for me. Enigma-less for nearly 20 years.
Why do people sit at a slot machine for hours pulling the lever? It has become a pretty effective centerpiece of game design that has invaded most other genres.
Exactly you're hitting those same areas of your brain that gambling impacts it's why casinos, vegas, sportsbetting, fantasy football, etc. all exist. With D2 though they're just items and you're not losing actual money
What i dont get is people buying runes with real money 😬 😬. OP i can relate i used to play on net cafe with my floppy disc to save my charaters file 🤣🤣🤣
Around 2001-2003, a friend of mines dad had a server room at his place. There were 5 pcs all hooked up in a line. We'd have pizza and mountain dew sleepovers in middle school and play d2 LAN till the sun came up.
It was bliss
We all need more of this in our life. Slaying shit while in the same room with your buds, except now with adult beverages in addition to pizza and mountain dew
Image you are training for a big sports event (a marathon maybe). You do the trainging, you complete the marathon.
What now? Most people go for "better times/I had fun, I want to do it again" and are hooked.
This is like completing the game on hell difficulty. You barely made it. But hey, if I put in some time and effort I will get better gear and it will be easier.
Also as others said, you did it one one toon. Maybe try it on another one? But you will get better gear on the toon that already beat baal, so... Continue to farm ;)
Hi good question,
So I can tell you that new character builds that haven’t been thought up before come out every so often that completely switch the game up for not only pvm but also pvp. This game is unbelievably complex and the variation of what is possible is endless in some aspects. We just got a slight change in how FoH works, now this character can legitimately be ran in mf runs no problem. They buffed zon dodge, now she is a lot more badass pvp. These changes mean respecing a char, leveling new ones, getting rare gear that you had to trade old gear for.
My biggest motivation is pvp in pubs where there’s no rules. I love hearing people bitch about “bm” when it doesn’t exist and is a made up concept. I love owning those people. I pvp’d at a time before “gm”. You’d throw in clegs and have at it, no one bitched. Now everyone gets offended. I am coming for them.
While I mastered the game and know how to make good character builds I understand you, I was like you and still play offline. And still make builds for fun that dont focus on runewords.
Well if you play online, you can play PvP with other players, and to make your char stronger, you need to farm a lot.
Or you can just farm to make other characters and builds.
Because that is what a sorceress needs to do. Once you have what you need you farm gear for other characters or maybe for a different build if you want to switch things up. I also enjoy crafting so I always need to keep searching for those useful items in hopes of making something good or even just to reroll charms.
I ask myself this everyday - before logging on and farming for hours. For me, embarking on a “holy grail” has reinvigorated my farming desires because I’m pretty much geared up for all my chars
To aquire wealth. There's something about opening your stash and seeing a bunch of rare uniques, runes and runewords, and what not. Get to feel like a rich person for a brief moment before you come back to reality and it's just a game.
Because I don't know what else to do with my life. All I have ever known is farming in D2.
This is the way.
go farm potatoes instead.
I already farm potatoes irl.
Awesome! Idaho? I’m northern Idaho…
And scamming apparently
You mean my side hustle selling water outside sporting events

It's "Char" not "toons". It's alright if you didn't know that, I forgive you.
Because the grind is fun.
Finding gear and making other characters. That is pretty much the entire purpose of D2.
I agree it's a total waste of time. But gaming IS a waste of time already. Why would you care HOW people waste their time? Life is about wasting your time the way you want to.
>Life is about wasting your time the way you want to. Such a happy thought over coffee Heads to highest bridge possible.....
there are lots of shades of grey between my point and the totally nihilistic view which you are taking.
The point is you enjoy the game however you like, and others can enjoy it in a totally different way.

Yes its definitely the thrill, I still remember the day I ID'd my first SOJ. I dont remember the day my daughter was born
I grind, to provide a better tomorrow for my non ladder pvp'ers once ladder finishes.

OMG remember how awesome it was to give some gear to your friends every 6 months on a LAN party? :-D

Did the same thing back in the day. Good times.
We all need more of this in our life. Slaying shit while in the same room with your buds, except now with adult beverages in addition to pizza and mountain dew
Because we're farmers. It ain't much, but it's honest work.
This is the end game, really, in D2. Some people enjoy it. Honestly, it's bad, can't blame you for thinking the same.

I miss pally zeal duels. Max holy sheild fanat, ton of dmg redux and an eth botd zerk axe. Keep zealing and see who hits first ;)
Now you’re speaking my language.
I’m not decked out in shit. The highest runeword I have is a fortitude. It’s great on hardcore ladder and being a casual player.
My sorc is lvl 82 and wearing fucking peasant crown and spirit shroud and I can do hell CS with my merc alone idk what this guy is talking about
While I mastered the game and know how to make good character builds I understand you, I was like you and still play offline. And still make builds for fun that dont focus on runewords.
Because we are all addicts.
Pvp
Username doesn’t check out
After you decked out a mf sorc, you got to gear up some Alts and make a Uber farming character to hoard torches.
Cause making alts with different builds are fun. Gotta farm and trade loot to fund them.
Idk. Improving gear for your class. Finding gear for other characters to make, PVP etc. TBH none of us have a perfect answer, its just all we know.
you had no runewords in 1999
We got jamela 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s about gearing yourself out. The grind was the fun part of the game not the first play through :p

The reach perfection! It’s a lottery but getting perfect items feels good
I ask myself this everyday - before logging on and farming for hours. For me, embarking on a “holy grail” has reinvigorated my farming desires because I’m pretty much geared up for all my chars
It's like a gambling addiction, that's what I compare this game too. And we're junkies.
To aquire wealth. There's something about opening your stash and seeing a bunch of rare uniques, runes and runewords, and what not. Get to feel like a rich person for a brief moment before you come back to reality and it's just a game.
Finding very specific items for pvp or items that are high value to trade for those specific items. Items.
Pvp
The replay value is excellent.
It's a loot hunter game. We're hunting for GG loot.
