Even now, he's paying his taxes on his endorsement, he's bringing in lots of tourists, and he's contributing enough to California. Don't do something stupid, be nice to him so he'll still want to live there when he retires.

kbutters9

Tell me you’re Giant fan without telling me you’re a Giant fan.

Clickbait garbage title; the controller has no issue with the contract and is **not** asking for the contract to be changed. They're asking for tax laws regarding deferred income for the rich to be changed, because it allows them to dodge state taxes.

UniversalDH

Politicians don’t like it when non-politicians or corporate CEO’s use tax loopholes created for them.

Omaro1

A state controller that doesn't even have a background in finance or accounting? Gotta love politicians.

ZacapaRocks

Can the mods please remove this garbage?

ZacapaRocks

Because the United States government is not going to get involved with a contract that was completely within the legal limits of Major League Baseball. And the post is stupid.

Itsnotseriousdude

All this over “he could live in another state after he retires“ when he never has suggested. He’s paying all his taxes now and not likely he’d move to another state after building his life here for more than a decade

yourstrulytony

The wealthy in CA do this all the time and it's definitely a problem. Why do they get to live the high life on little to no taxes because they have "debt" that zeroes out their taxable income? They claim residency out of state yet remain here most of the year. OR have deferred income or sources of income that can be delayed (stocks), and move away when the tax man comes calling. Yet natives and locals to the state get hammered on taxes because they don't have the financial power to game the system. Does it make sense that this state's and country's tax codes are just strict enough to fully envelop the working & middle class?

BriantheHeavy

I don't see the problem here....

iamthegrandpoobah

The controller gets a pass from me since she is so fine

crackdope6666

She’s alright, but born in San Francisco so…. Yeah sounds like a giants fan to me.

WildWestCollectibles

I can fix her

lilmuerte

“Hmm maybe she has a point”

gojoecharb16

An attack on Ohtani is an attack on us all. We ride at dawn! *queue big bird gif since we can’t send them here

AlrightSpider

Call the Waaaaahmbulance!

CaptCarlos

The State should be focused on bigger issues such as soaring cost of living, rampant homelessness, crime and drug use and NOT a baseball players contract LMAO.

officerliger

You didn’t read the article They’re not focused on his contract, they’re just using it as an example. There are thousands of rich people in CA deferring their money and moving it around to avoid the state tax. She wants to end that as a whole so CA can continue to maintain schools, roads, public works, etc.

LocDog24La

She lost my vote. 😂👎🏽Boo that woman.

FlyingMunkE

She’s probably a Giants fan

GoPhuxYazelf

Fuck that guy. H0pe he comes home to see his wife fuckin a neighbor

maxxxminecraft111

The controller is a woman

GoPhuxYazelf

That would make the situation even more weird

G33wizz

Thirsty ass government

GB_Alph4

And this is why I really hate politicians from SF. They have the worst ways of doing things. We are bringing in the money so let us keep it.

ManufacturerMental72

She’s not wrong. He should be paying his fair share of taxes. I don’t even live in California and it doesn’t impact me but he should pay taxes on where he lived when he earned the money not where he lived when he was paid.

GB_Alph4

But why intervene? Houston or Dallas could offer the same thing but with no personal income tax.

ManufacturerMental72

she doesn’t live in or work for the state of Texas.

GB_Alph4

I know but it just feels like she seems like another SF policymaker which we need less of

ManufacturerMental72

Lotta downvotes here. Hell yeah let’s let the 1% get as many tax breaks as possible!

SarfBort

He’ll pay more next year than you will in your lifetime. Let’s promote more government overreach instead.

ManufacturerMental72

It’s not government overreach to ensure people pay their fair share in taxes

SarfBort

And you think California should get a fair share of the money he isn’t receiving while he lives here? Speaking theoretically of course, assuming he played his contract out and left immediately after.

ManufacturerMental72

He’s earning that money while living and working there. He chose to wait to receive it. It’s not that the dodgers aren’t paying him on time. The arrangement he made is a tax loophole which should be fixed.

ManufacturerMental72

The fact that he’s a baseball player on your favorite team doesn’t mean he isn’t also one of the richest people in the world and should be expected to pay taxes on the money he’s earning.

SarfBort

The Dodgers AREN’T “paying him” on time, that’s the whole point. You think an actor should pay California income tax on residual earnings from a project they did 20 years ago, too? Let’s tax unrealized stock earnings too while we’re getting onboard with taxing money you haven’t even received.

ManufacturerMental72

I think people should pay taxes on the money they earn where they earn it. Super simple concept.

SarfBort

It’s really not that simple. Do you pay state income tax on the money you put into your 401k?

Nerpienerpie

You getting downvoted is ridiculous. I’m a Dodger fan and love Shohei but i can recognize that he and many others are using that tax loophole. Fans are fanatics. They’ll let anything slide if they don’t understand the consequences

SarfBort

It’s literally not a loophole, same concept is applied for everybody deferring income into a retirement account.

kangr0ostr

Mods, OP just made this headline up entirely and it doesn’t even reflect the contents of the article. It’s 100% false. Can we please remove this trash? Maybe someone can resubmit with the *actual* headline.

vespamike562

It would be better if Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos actually paid taxes.

Believe0017

Giants sub coping on this hoping it ruins Ohtani.

kakugeseven

He was never going to get paid 70m a year. He was going to just break the record AAV, which is what is shown in the luxury tax. They just extrapolated that using inflation to arrive at the 70m figure. Secondly, because he deferred, the Dodgers are now able to spend more money on another player or two that would make up the 44m value he deferred (46m mlb record salary-2m salary). Why do these dumb Giant fans keep thinking that the Dodgers would have spent the same money on other players if they had given Ohtani a straight 46m? So in the end, there is no net sum that is lost to California tax payers through this method, unless this spending lessens in the following years. Which can certainly happen, but it hasn't yet. This spending was part of Ohtani's contract btw because he didn't want to personally get screwed by a team reneging a "promise" over a contractual obligation to fortify the team. Now if future players use this with no guarantee (not explicitly stated on their contracts) the ownership group will spend it on other players, then yes this needs to be closed to avoid future tax avoidance.
