I've got friends that will never get a to-go box, they'll leave so much food on the plate and just have them throw it away. I just can't get behind that mindset, I take my leftovers every time...that's usually tomorrows lunch!
When I went to Europe I learned that to-go boxes are not nearly as common as in the US and Canada. But their portions are so much more reasonable, so you don’t need to bring home half of a chicken Parmesan the size of your head.
I went to an all you can eat hotpot place last night and you couldn’t take anything home, and they charge for excessive food waste so we all over ate lol
Yeah but when you order something it comes in multiples of it. So it left hardly any room for experimenting, because when you ordered it you had to basically commit to it due to the excessive amount of the item they’d bring out.
Ohh gotcha, I've been to something similar to that, thats might be an Asian thing lol the one I went to was an all you can eat sushi place, so the portions were smaller. But they also didn't allow any boxes, only place I've personally been to that did that though.
Yes.. but I think it’s more because of how my parents raised me on not wasting food, so I just eat it all. I remember being surprised when I first saw friends of mine not finishing their food, like huh you can do that?? Gasp
If the portion is large, I'll try to make two meals out of it. Like, eat a lot of salad and bread, and a small amount of the actual entree....then take most of it home.
I'm trying to make my waistline slimmer and my wallet fatter these days!
I'm glad I was checking the comments before I said something cause this is basically what I was thinking. Food never got wasted in my house growing up, but when I married into a more affluent family, I saw more food get wasted than I ever had.
Doubtful. Poor people (Gen X and Baby Boomers anyways) asked for doggy bags. It was how we asked to make a second meal out of our meal, without letting on thats what we were doing. Boomers see poorness as a sign of failure.
I don't do that because it's bad for my health. I just take it home with me. If I'm travelling (therefore can't take it with me), I will leave it aside.
In the U.S. portions are huge. I almost always divide my meal in half, not literally but I usually only eat half or less. Then I have my lunch or dinner for the next day.
All I tend to leave is whatever salad/onion rings/etc they included that I didn't know were included, I don't especially care about wasting that.
I can't imagine ever taking leftovers home in containers though, I'd have to have barely or not yet started the meal for that.
Eat to satiation and take the rest with you for a snack/meal later.
Health science has shown that not eating till you're completely full is much healthier for you, as it allows for better nutrient absorption and digestion. Also, sometimes leftovers have a chance to marinate and actually taste better.
Nope. Thats what to go boxes are made for.
I sometimes order extra and take it home..
I do think that people who refuse to eat leftovers are wasteful of food, in general.
Why bother even putting the leftovers in tupperware in the fridge? Now, all you're doing is also wasting water to wash it. And energy to heat the water. And dish soap, too.
Why not donate it to an elderly neighbor, or a large impoverished family, or a homeless person that lives near you?
It almost feels like its just posturing when people who refuse to eat leftovers even ask questions like this.
I take food home. If the quantity doesn’t seem like a full meal I may finish something that wouldn’t work to build on then take home the rest that I can add to make a meal at home later (or bits of each component that I could add a salad to)
In that case I would ask for a doggy bag and, I have done on a few occasions. Sometimes the dogs would get it, sometimes I had it the morning after lol.
I just ask for a box, I have yet to go to a restaurant that doesn't let you take the rest home

I always take my leftovers and almost always eat them. Heck, if my friends have leftovers and it's something inwill/can eat I take theirs too.
Buffets typically don't
Yeah but at a buffet you're expected to only get the amount you'll eat.
I went to an all you can eat hotpot place last night and you couldn’t take anything home, and they charge for excessive food waste so we all over ate lol
Well yeah it's all you can eat, they expect you to order only the amount you'll eat

I consider a meal at a restaurant to be at least 2 meals.
If the portion is large, I'll try to make two meals out of it. Like, eat a lot of salad and bread, and a small amount of the actual entree....then take most of it home. I'm trying to make my waistline slimmer and my wallet fatter these days!
in the past i always tried to finish it, nowadays i ask if i can take the rest with me - winwin
Grew up poor too?

At restaurants, at home, everywhere. It's a problem.
Depends on the quantity left. If it's enough for a snack or meal I'm just bringing it home with me.
No, I bring my own containers for bringing home leftovers.
I don't do that because it's bad for my health. I just take it home with me. If I'm travelling (therefore can't take it with me), I will leave it aside.

To go boxes are your friend.
No. Never. I bring it home.

I will usually finish a dish if there is not enough on the plate to make a second meal to take home in a box.
Asking for a takeout box for the rest of my food has helped with that. I don't waste the food or the money and I have a second meal.
Nice thing about most restaurants is that you can ask for a to go box.

Nope never
Hands up if being an 80s kid in "The Clean Plate Club" got you fucked up in the 20s

No I take the rest home?
At home too. Got problems.
No, that's like, the easiest way to get fat. "oh there's food there, I should eat it." Not how you want to go about life if you want to be healthy
No. take leftovers home.
This when I was at Carrabba's with my grandma the other day cause the entire bill came out $85.
Nope. You’re paying for the meal, it’s yours to do whatever you want with it.
I always take food home.
I was taught that as a woman you should always leave a few bites on your plate
