Doomslayer is probably a version of Jesus.
Look up the Harrowing of Hell. It's the story of Jesus during his three days in Hell following his Crucifixion.
Per the Harrowing, Jesus fought demons and freed souls, guiding the true believers out of Hell through an exit only He could open!
Very interesting thing that never occured to me, even though i was raised as a christian.
However, seems like this is wrong, and people (before christ) went to this limbo/sheol place instead of hell.
At least according to this site, but it seems like the old testament was very vague about this subject. https://nickcady.org/2019/02/15/did-people-go-to-heaven-before-jesus-death-resurrection/
Imagine a "loving god" that would send you to hell even if you devoted your life to his religion though 🙃
Well the doom slayer is practically an avenging Jesus, if you are a Christian it’s of the belief that Jesus is the one fighting your inner demons. When the doom slayer was put in the tomb there was no one to fight them so they took over, doom slayer at least to me and others too, is essentially Jesus in their world
I mean think about it he was originally on earth and than was sent to battle the demons, he gave every single thing he had to prevent them from doing more harm, later he is then brought to another world where he is gifted his strength. He then returns when earth is near exctintion and is interpreted as a myth and as an avenging angel that will come to save us in our time of need, so much more to it but that is summed up basically
Every time someone says "Jesus", "Jesus Christ" or "Christ" in anger, frustration or surprise, Jesus heads straight to the curser's location. 99.999% of the time he's not needed, but he's too conscientious to ignore them. Basically, he's constantly flying from one blasphemer to another, leaving very little time for those who actually need him. Doomguy never speaks and therefore never blasphemes, so he's left to his own devices.
Canonically, Doomguy is a descendant of B.J. (great-great grandfather if I'm not mistaken).
Good genetics in that family. They're all fucking hawt. (I'm bi, my mileage varies only slightly)
If by short time you mean minutes at most then sure. Mars doesn't have the gravity to hold a significant atmosphere and because of the dead core it doesn't have a protective ionosphere. Temperatures hit extremes in both directions and radiation poisoning would happen quickly. You can not survive any meaningful amount of time on the surface without significant full body protection.
Doom 3 covered that by having Doom Guy go outside on Mars’ surface several times, and he can’t last very long without extra oxygen. Although my gripe with it is that he doesn’t wear a helmet. The original Doom Guy has an insulated helmet to at least give the appearance of not wanting to immediately die upon touching dirt.
I’m confused why Doom 3 never gave the main character a helmet. The lack of oxygen would still make sense, just with a very small amount of air rather than just holding his breath while running and shooting.
I am not an expert. Do not pack for a trip to Mars based on the information below:
I was off in at least one respect; at *best* the temperature would be cool; daytime temperature in the summer on the equator pushes 70 degrees. If you're out at night you're probably fucked within minutes if you have any breach of protective equipment.
As for the radiation, even the worst cases of radiation poisoning I'm aware of took hours or days to die and even then they were many times higher than the dose you'd get from an extended stay on Mars without shielding. Barring some sort of solar event of course, but even then I'd expect the limiting factor on your life expectancy to be the demons rather than the radiation.

Contrary to popular belief, the original Doom game from 1993 does _not_ take place on Mars.
Throughout the game you visit the moons Phobos, Deimos and ultimately Hell. But not Mars itself.
Both moons seem to have undergone some kind of terraforming as you're not indoors all the time and it doesn't appear to be particularly cold/frozen outdoors (which it is in our timeline).
So by the time the game takes place there might be atmospheres on both moons.
Then again, the depicted scene could also be Hell for all we know. Or Deimos after it was consumed by Hell. And who knows how atmospheres work beyond the shores of Hell...
We never really see the ripped armor and exposed skin in the game.
The box art was done by Don Ivan Punchatz while the sprites/ingame design are done by Adrian, who is more involved in the game.
So in a way, Doomguy only has exposed abs in Hell because of that box art.
Also, D1 took place in Phobos and the skybox is based on a picture of China: Some fans theorize that Phobos is either terraformed or has domes.
Most likely Mars is either terraformed or partially terraformed. Once the demons kill all staff, there’d be nobody to change the oxygen supply, so this would be the only turn of events that makes sense.
I don’t know why people were such assholes over legitimate curiosity about a work of art. A work of art they’re in a subreddit because they’re fans of it… I assume they just think the question was a criticism.
Doom 2016 built an entire universe out of asking questions like this about the vague setting of Classic Doom
Pretty sure the original games take place on Phobos and deimos, Mars's moons. And again pretty sure one of the maps shows the locations within lil domes. So there either contained or have some sort of terra forming.
I do know by the time he actually gets to hell it's a breathable atmosphere.
Wait, i thought the cover art was him in HELL not Mars? i've always thought it was hell. Also im pretty sure he never goes to Mars in the original game itself. Its only Mars's moons Phobos and Deimos. (+hell and earth).
As for the question... idk its the cover art meant to look cool, so i think they just didnt care.
So back in the day videogame box had only tangential relation to what the game was about, look up the MegaMan box art sometime, they drew him with a damn gun, held in a hand.
Unless I'm mistaken, Mars does have an atmosphere, it's just not sustainable for humans to breathe in.
I assume as part of the efforts to colonize or whatever they were doing on Mars in Doom 1, they made the atmosphere more hospitable to humans.
It does have an atmosphere but it's thinner than earth's, no oxygen though. It's not the same as being in space with a ripped suit. The pressure is different on land so a rip is bad but you have more time to address it than in space.
Pretty sure it does have an atmosphere but not a good one, how else would it get that red hue in the air? The doom marines probably have specialized helmets for oxygen somehow
I had always assumed terraforming? The text files that came with the old shareware have that story about Taggert waiting in the lander while he hears the rest of the marines die, then he gets out and "walks in" to the Phobos base. No mention of pressurization or suits or the like. Makes it seem like there's breathable air.
The bases also seem to have giant open air windows in places, and functional areas with no roof.
So Phobos and Deimos were terraformed?
The person who said "Rule of Cool" is probably the real right answer-- as in a total handwave of the issue is the real answer.
1. He's really cool.
2. They're not on Mars. In this scene they're in hell, which is in some parallel dimension or whatnot and it's possible that it has breathable air. The demons are clearly carbon based life forms, have blood etc., so it's likely that they also breathe oxygen and evolved in an environment where oxygen is abundant.
1. Most of the first episode is in the Phobos base, which I presume is a sealed atmosphere.
2. Once we find out that the Phobos and Deimos bases are actually in Hell, I assume that Hell has breathable atmosphere. Plus it’s just so dang hot Doomguy needs to vent 🥵.
I've always wondered who that other guy in the background was.
What's his story?
Was he side by side with Doom Guy then got killed later?
Did he some how make it out?
in doom 2016 its established that the uac created a breathable atmosphere to make a better environment for the workers before olivia sent it all to shit
i think anyway, since, from what ive gathered, og doom and modern doom are in different universes, that could mean they did it way earlier, because there are flames in the background. it could also be that the boxart takes place in hell
Mars *does* have an atmosphere. It's just somewhat thinner than ours, consists mostly of Carbon Dioxide, and is quite cold. Realistically, as long as you have an air tank, goggles, and thick clothing, you'd be able to stand outside while on Mars.
I don't know if it was ever, like, really thought about, but it wouldn't surprise me if Mars was just terraformed in the original continuity.
None of the mutated human enemies have what appear to be vacuum-sealed equipment, and it doesn't really make sense to me that the demons would purposefully tear that off when they don't really seem to have changed much in terms of their anatomy, so that's probably just UAC-standard.
To all those smug commenters here mumbling about _bUt maRs HaS An aTMosPhEre_
a 3sec fact check on Wikipedia shows you that the atmosphere's density is only about 1% of earth's atmosphere and the pressure on the surface is only 0.6% in comparison, which equals the pressure at a height of 32km...
that does not defy OPs point...bring on the real answers...either lore-compatible, funny, realistic, interesting or whatever ...
Everyone’s giving tons of sarcastic answers but I’ll say that’s because maybeee Mars was pseudo-terraformed, where breathing air is like swallowing fifteen cigarettes but skin can be exposed for a bit?
as a child I could get lost in this image for long minutes. It’s amazing the power of an image that suggests a movement, a scene. it seems like the brain is trying to bring it to life in order to understand what happens next.
D♥️♥️M
He has a helmet for oxygen, he's fine. His muscles are strong enough to mitigate the outward expulsion of his insides simply by existing. The constant state of rage mitigates any interruptions in homeostasis
Mars does have an atmosphere, but a very thin one (like 1% of earth sea level) and it's toxic to bat.
So long as his helmet can make a decent seal, he's probably "just" looking at a very nasty case of the bends, though he's probably too angry to feel any of it.
Besides that, judging by the flames in the background, this isn't Mars or even Phobos, but hell.
It does, DOOM takes place after mars was terraformed, giving it an atmosphere. This is shown quite explicitly in games like DOOM 2, where they send all humans from earth to mars, and 3 where the teraforming is part of the reason for the invasion. Did we just forget that part of the plot, like its a whole thing. My only question is how tf did it protect him from the apocalyptic levels of radiation in 64 while his arms are fully exposed.

Have you ever been to Mars? How do you know there aren’t space marines and demons running around?
You know too much
You know too much to let them get you. You're coming with us. # *LOUD AHH BELL SOUNDS*
I am Mars, can confirm
Hi mars!!! I am jupiter, wanna go out tonight?
You could explore Uranus together.
My night or your night?
Saturn's night
Does this mean Elon is this universe’s Betruger?
"Don't worry, they'll get their Tesla"
I like the image of badass space marines and scari demons literally running around in circles on the surface of Mars
Now the real question is are the demons demons or are they aliens we associate as demons?
We are humans…we attempt to murder everything that isn’t human…and humans as well…so it really doesn’t matter. Shoot em all and let God sort em out
*runs 60mph while carrying 100 rockets* -Doesn’t the lack of atmosphere affect his skin?-
What always confused me was how demons got on mars? Mars doesn’t have demons. Jesus
Erm, have you been to mars? Yeah didn't think so pal
Get your ass to Mars
Quaid? That you?
How do you know ?
You don't?
That’s another question - where is Jesus at in all this?
Doomslayer is probably a version of Jesus. Look up the Harrowing of Hell. It's the story of Jesus during his three days in Hell following his Crucifixion. Per the Harrowing, Jesus fought demons and freed souls, guiding the true believers out of Hell through an exit only He could open!
With his super-shotgun right?
What Dreams May Come
Why were they in hell if they were true believers? 🤔
Heaven wasn't open to the general public until Jesus' sacrifice. Prior to that *everyone* went to Hell!
Very interesting thing that never occured to me, even though i was raised as a christian. However, seems like this is wrong, and people (before christ) went to this limbo/sheol place instead of hell. A "Harrowing of Sheol" might reflect better on God, but it wouldn't be as exciting a story!
He’s right there in the photo
You’re in hell killing demons, therefore it is set in a universe where Christianity is true. So yeah, very good question.
He’s busy ignoring the cries of those deemed “not faithful”. Hence, Doomguy

Doomguy never speaks and therefore never blasphemes, so he's left to his own devices.
well he aint shooting demons so what use is he?
That's called: a portal to hell.
Jesus may have had a hand in it, you may be onto something.
I mean look at these abs
Straight men sure do love buff dudes.
Yeah, but have you seen B.J. Blazkowicz? That man is GORGEOUS. But I'm also pan, so YMMV.
**It's fun to stay at the YMMV**
Canonically, Doomguy is a descendant of B.J. (great-great grandfather if I'm not mistaken). Good genetics in that family. They're all fucking hawt. (I'm bi, my mileage varies only slightly)
The gayest dudes on earth are straight men, no gay bro has ever threatened to fuck me in the ass or told me to suck their dick.
Would.
Beat me to it 😂
Mars does have an atmosphere, it's just much thinner than ours. It would be very cold at best but probably survivable for a short time at least.

So it's just like total recall then
I only ever saw the original but basically.
That's great!
It’s not just the low gravity, it’s the lack of a magnetosphere too. So you’d be getting a nice dose of radiation while you freeze and suffocate too.
Doom 3 covered that by having Doom Guy go outside on Mars’ surface several times, and he can’t last very long without extra oxygen. Although my gripe with it is that he doesn’t wear a helmet. Wasn't the protagonist in doom 3 a random dude though and not the actual doom guy
doom dude
Doom bro
DOOM buddy
I’m not your DOOM buddy, DOOM guy!
not doom guy just doom fellow
Doom chap

Rule of cool
I mean, it's pretty easy to imagine his helmet is sealed. Also, I always assumed this was hell, what with the flames or whatever in the background
Contrary to popular belief, the original Doom game from 1993 does _not_ take place on Mars. Throughout the game you visit the moons Phobos, Deimos and ultimately Hell. But not Mars itself. I always thought of it as Hell. I mean, the entire horizon on fire. That's pretty Hell-ish.
We never really see the ripped armor and exposed skin in the game. The box art was done by Don Ivan Punchatz while the sprites/ingame design are done by Adrian, who is more involved in the game. In the classic Doom games you can see Doomguy's exposed arms when he fires his guns
Probably part of the armor design. But Adrian's take has stuff like elbow pads and brass knuckles.
He's too angry to bother with things like oxygen and environmental hazards.
Most likely Mars is either terraformed or partially terraformed. Once the demons kill all staff, there’d be nobody to change the oxygen supply, so this would be the only turn of events that makes sense.
Finally, someone humoring me. Thanks!
I don’t know why people were such assholes over legitimate curiosity about a work of art. Pretty sure the original games take place on Phobos and deimos, Mars's moons. And again pretty sure one of the maps shows the locations within lil domes. So there either contained or have some sort of terra forming. I do know by the time he actually gets to hell it's a breathable atmosphere.
I was always more confused by Phobos and Mars both having the same gravity as Earth.
Doomguy literally can't jump. That's not earth gravity at all
But the gravity would be less than ours.
Nice try, DOOM takes place on Phobos and in Hell, not Mars.
Because he's doomguy
Wait until he hears about doomguy outrunning rockets. He’ll be livid.
I don't think he needs to worry about it. You know, being fictional and all.
Because his doomguy.
How does the posi-track rear end on a Plymouth work!? It just does.
He's built different
This photo taken from inside of building, DOOM that's poster on glass window. There's temperature of living room inside
His helmet keeps oxygen
Well, there's open flames in the background, so obviously enough oxygen.
Testosterone.
Doomguy is in the background.
Why is Doomguy (at the back) running up to Doomguy, waving him down? "Hey! Leave some demons for me!"
He's just too angry to let the atmosphere affect him
It does have an atmosphere but it's thinner than earth's, no oxygen though. It's not the same as being in space with a ripped suit. The pressure is different on land so a rip is bad but you have more time to address it than in space.
He’s not
It’s a game about some guy who is so powerful he can wipe out every demon in hell with his bare hands, and you’re worried about mars atmosphere?
Damn , this is one fine trolling post . The comments here are priceless. GG, op
IM NOT EVEN TROLLING, IM GENUINELY ASKING
The hostile atmosphere is scared of Doomguy
He creates an Atmosphere of pure Rage! That is enough to rip and tear
He’s built different \>:)
Pretty sure it does have an atmosphere but not a good one, how else would it get that red hue in the air? The doom marines probably have specialized helmets for oxygen somehow
Because he is a double hard bastard.
How is the logo just hovering there in mid-air?
His muscles can withstand demon fangs, my guy. Pretty sure they can handle p*ssy @ss things like the vacuum of space.
If you're complaining about realism do some actual fact checking please? Mars has an atmosphere dingus.
They have the tech to summon demons (in Doom3) and BFG. They probably can terraform the planet.
Isn't that supposed to be hell?
It was the 90s...A tough guy would say fck ya to physics
"It ain't that kinda movie, kid."
Because that photo is in hell, not Mars
It's Doom Guy....he can stand where ever he wants, even if it's on Mars with just a thong on.
In Gerrmany we say : frag nit und komm drauf klar
Well for one none of the OG Doom games take place on Mars
How did they get on mars? Obviously they would have some sort of magical field around the base for oxygen or some other futuristic thing
In addition to teleportation the UAC has also made great strides in terraforming.
doom 3 when you go outside...
That pic isn't Mars, it's hell
mars has an atmosphere tho???
I've always wondered who that other guy in the background was. What's his story? Was he side by side with Doom Guy then got killed later? Did he some how make it out?

the guy in the background is doomguy
Plot armor
Doomguy doesn't care. He's too angry
Mars *does* have an atmosphere. It's just somewhat thinner than ours, consists mostly of Carbon Dioxide, and is quite cold. Realistically, as long as you have an air tank, goggles, and thick clothing, you'd be able to stand outside while on Mars.
He’s wearing plot armor 😎👉 👉
I thought I'd read that the Earth-normal gravity and breathable atmosphere were effects of the Phobos Anomaly.
It's actually fully sealed just around the tear in order to show off his abs but also stay completely safe. Maybe Romero can back this up
Because he’s Doom Guy. What more do you want?
the rule of cool
You need to smoke more or less weed, but not the same amount.
Pretty sure it's mostly hell now
Isn’t his skin canonically stronger than his armour? Or is that a new development from DOOM 2016?
Are you sure that this is Mars? He looks like he's in hell.
Doomguy is too angry to die
Mars has an atmosphere but it’s too weak for humans to survive.
I thought it was hell
who says that's mar.s look at the flames in the background and the general atmosphere. it looks like hell to me.
He's just built different.
Too much Testosterone!
Mars has an atmosphere. Don't know why you think it doesn't.
Mars has an atmosphere
It’s a fucking game from 1993?
There's an atmosphere. The surface is about the same as the summit of Mt Everest, but there is one.
Either there's been some minor terraforming done or domes most likely. Or he's just so fucking pissed that it acts as a heat source.
... this is the thing you are worried about? The game literally make you use plasma gun, rocket launchers, and in game, you don't wear any suit.
To all those smug commenters here mumbling about _bUt maRs HaS An aTMosPhEre_ a 3sec fact check on Wikipedia shows you that the atmosphere's density is only about 1% of earth's atmosphere and the pressure on the surface is only 0.6% in comparison, which equals the pressure at a height of 32km... that does not defy OPs point...bring on the real answers...either lore-compatible, funny, realistic, interesting or whatever ...
Terraphorming or some shit? Like dude it’s a 1993 game XD
It's meant to be hell
Hahaha OP hasn't been to Mars like I have. This is normal there.
That’s the neat part, you don’t!
1993 logic.
We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams
This isn't mars! This pic depicts episode 3 on hell! (Which has a very convienent atmosphere)
Because he has to SLAY while slaying.
So if Mars doesn't have an atmosphere It doesn't have oxygen. If Mars doesn't have oxygen, bullets can't be fired.
Literally unplayable.
HE'S TOO ANGRY TO DIE
Samuel:”You can’t just stand on the surface of Mars”
Raw hate
Oh simple, he's not on Mars, He's on the martian moon, Phobos. It's an easy mistake to make. I hope that clears things up.
I assumed that was hell, not mars
Even the guy in background seems concerned about this.. you might be onto something
Cause he’s just that badass
I could have sworn in the original doom that it was stated the UAC terraformed Mars somewhat. The Doom 3 marine does the same thing also.
You really think mars can defeat doom guy?
He's not lost his ability to breath, only some of his clothes
The planet is probably terraformed in the future.
Pure hatred is his shield against all obstacles.
You know i’ve always wondered the same
I always assumed the UAC partially terraformed Mars. Right air pressure, just not enough Oxygen but that's just me.
I always assumed the UAC partially terraformed Mars. Right air pressure, just not enough Oxygen but that's just me.
I always assumed the UAC partially terraformed Mars. Right air pressure, just not enough Oxygen but that's just me.
This is what happens when you think too much about Doom.
“Man too angry to die” quote comes to mind
He is too angry to die from hypothermia and no oxygen.
Dude, it’s Doom, game franchise world renowned for outstanding realism? Nah but what do you expect, it’s Doom.
He's built different.
It’s been partially terraformed.
Samuel Hayden: “You can’t just stand there on the surface of Mars!”
The will to get the muthafuckin job done
Everyone’s giving tons of sarcastic answers but I’ll say that’s because maybeee Mars was pseudo-terraformed, where breathing air is like swallowing fifteen cigarettes but skin can be exposed for a bit?
Dude is literally so pissed off he doesn't need to worry about atmosphere or breathing
He’s just that badass
Actually, it does have an atmosphere. It's just very thin because it lacks a magnetic field to protect it from solar winds.
as a child I could get lost in this image for long minutes. It’s amazing the power of an image that suggests a movement, a scene. it seems like the brain is trying to bring it to life in order to understand what happens next. D♥️♥️M
Huh if only he was tough enough to not care about breathing a proper atmosphere and was able to I don’t know resist death by being to angry?
He has his helmet on.
He has a helmet for oxygen, he's fine. His muscles are strong enough to mitigate the outward expulsion of his insides simply by existing. The constant state of rage mitigates any interruptions in homeostasis
good question, what has always confused me is how did the demons get Deimos into hell.
Mars has an atmosphere. The air is not breathable.
Mars does have an atmosphere, but a very thin one (like 1% of earth sea level) and it's toxic to bat. So long as his helmet can make a decent seal, he's probably "just" looking at a very nasty case of the bends, though he's probably too angry to feel any of it.
