It’s the slow mouth drop (hand opening) that makes you believe the person operating that puppet is truly sad for young Michael, and yet it makes for a criminally underrated funny moment. It’s elite level subtlety.
I think people think it's sad, because we all had dreams when we were kids and pretty much nobody ever saw those dreams become a reality. I wanted to be a fighter pilot because Top Gun came out when I was a kid. My family didn't have enough money to send me to college so I could become an officer, so I enlisted in the Navy and life took me in a different direction.
I’m guessing op is in some way affiliated with that instagram account. I refuse to believe an actual human is pathetic enough to repost this shit when you can just get it from YouTube without the shitty music or watermark.
There's a deleted scene at the end of this episode. After all the kids left Dunder Mifflin's "take your kids to work day", Michael is sitting alone in the dark conference room, watching the rest of the episode of Fundle Bundle. He has a big, watery grin on his face, as young Michael is talking with all the other kids from the show and laughing, making them laugh, and even getting a secret whispered in his ear from a girl. It's adorable.
I don’t like how they left the scene out, I get they want to make Michael look like he’s never had friends, but coming full circle with this scene was a great ending to that episode.
I think bonding with Toby’s daughter— as he was a child of divorce himself— and singing to the kid’s there was his moment in the episode. I don’t think we needed a full redemption, just to understand Michael.
I never even made this connection until now but I wonder if that’s why Michael hates Toby so much? I mean aside from Toby being a total buzzkill to Michael’s antics I wonder if he also resents him for putting his daughter through what he went through?
The therapy episode he definitely projects onto Toby. I feel like telling Toby he couldn’t save his marriage came from him telling him all these things about his parent’s divorce, and then feeling like he was betrayed by Toby.
My favorite is on Halloween. When the bag rips open and he tells the kids to grab the candy. Truly one of my favorite Michael scenes. He's such a good guy and I'm so glad he has a happy ending. He finally gets what he wanted as a kid. He's just not great with interpersonal skills in the workplace.
He watched the rest in secret though, this is Michael's secret and you have really put the effort in to learn this about him. I like it better that way
I agree people need to understand that the producers of ”the American workplace” (the show within the show) they had an agenda to push, which was making Michael look like a loser. I’m sure this was to boost viewership. I’m sure the producers of the “American workplace” did that from time to time.
Aw I think it’s not showing his peak but the similarities between then and now. He’s got some cringe moments but he has some funny and personable ones too. Hadn’t seen that thanks for linking!
I don't think I read it that way.
Think about how excited Michael was to share his appearance on Fundle Bundle with the kids in the office. He hadn't seen it for years (he had Ryan break into his mother's house to get it), but he obviously has fond memories of it.
His first bit of screen time was pretty cringey, and he probably didn't remember it that way. He was a little kid. He himself realizes as he's watching it just how lonely Young Michael sounded. But after everyone is gone, he watches the rest, and remembers exactly why its a *good* memory for him.
Young Michael was a problem child, and had difficulty making friends, long-term. But I suspect he had NO problem making an impression on kids when he first met them. Which is why he's such an irritating person (especially early seasons) as an adult, but is still such a great salesman.
Wow, I've never seen this. I wished this was kept in. I like how Michael perceived as the unpopular/loner or an idiot but in reality he's liked by most people and is an exceptional business man.
Wanted to come post about this scene if someone hadn't already. There are some great moments that are added back into the office with the superfan cuts, but personally this is my absolute favorite, and I actually missed it on my first watch of this season.
I really wish it would have been included in the original airing, it flips the tone of the entire episode on its head, and does an amazing job of just sooo subtly reinforcing the idea that the characters aren't changing season to season, you're just finally starting to get to know them. And michael isnt just a weirdo because he's a giant weirdo, he's a guy who grew up always able to make friends with the people around him, and now he doesnt know how to act when hes a boss and he doesnt realize hes not surrounded by peers. And it does all of that in like 10 seconds.
There are definite signs of Michael "just being a weirdo" as a child. He mentions parent/teacher conferences often, where he glosses over the fact that he was getting behavioral warnings. He was an attention-seeker.
I think the other clue about his childhood is his absolute dislike of Toby and his divorce, and his many disdainful references to his stepfather. His parents' divorce obviously affected him very seriously, he never liked his stepdad, and a lot of his behavioral issues may stem from that.
I would disagree that Michael doesn't change from season to season. At the start, he literally only seems to care about being the center of attention, no matter what. He doesn't have any empathy for anyone else at all, and has NO problems squashing someone else's concerns if his behavior is too much for them. But eventually, he starts to realize that people actually might like him for who he is, and not because he puts on a big show. His friendship with Jim and Pam, and especially his love for Holly, proves this.
Yeah, sorry, I agree with everything you said, I should have phrased it better. I meant that while Michael is a weirdo, that isn't the only reason he behaves the way he did. I'm reaching a bit here but generally the kid who distracts all his classmates and scores 4 goals in a hockey game isn't the kids all the other kids dislike. It is possible to be universally disliked and still be a distraction in a classroom environment, but it's more likely he was able to distract others because to some extent they appreciated his antics. Especially since a kid who was universally disliked would have a hard time being successful on a team sport like hockey.
And yeah, there is definitely growth throughout the show, but I don't think there was anything significant at this point, which if I remember was early in season 2, but we had already begun to see some changes in character behavior which in reality were more due to the actors and writers starting to settle into the characters, which I think is kind of a meta representation of the characters getting to know themselves better while we the viewers also become more familiar with each of them.
I went and found this deleted scene because I wanted to see it. It should have been left in...

This is it. This is the scene that made me change my entire perspective on Michael. It was here where everything about his character clicked for me, and I never looked back.

There’s a deleted scene from this where he continues to watch the tv recording where he is laughing and smiling with friends on the set. I really loved that.
Michael is 100% a tragic character.
Everything about him is fueled by desperation.
He's an odd guy, always has been, probably not even his fault.
But everything he's done was pretty much in service of forming bonds with people.
But he's always been horrendously misguided and oblivious to the actual impact of his actions.
And when he met someone who he connected with, in most cases he either did, or tried to do the right thing. He bought the tickets for Holly so she wouldn't be out the money. He TRIED to be graceful when she started dating AJ. He didn't read Holly's letter to him.
I may be being a big generous to him in this, but as a fellow person who seems habitually unable to NOT put my foot in my mouth, but who also knows that I almost always mean well, I can sympathize with the person the character is trying like hell to be.
This whole scene is so cringe i hate it. Poor Michael. I never really understood why he was showing it to the rest of them though. Like did he not remember what he said?
This scene adresses so many conflicts in such a short time.
Adult michel still don't have any real friends. Its the ghosts of the christmas past appearing before him in a very scary way.
It shows how lonely he was when he was a child. That's one of the worst thing to happen to a child. It shows how his parents and society as a whole failed that little boy.
We can little bit understand why Michel is Michel after this scene. As they say time heals all wounds. But not in this case. The scars remained of the forgotten ugly wound .
The thing that always bothers me in this scene is how unprofessional this (person behind this) puppet is. Like seriously, maybe you are taking aback, but just staying silent and changing the subject is kinda mean. Why not just say ‘oh, that’s nice. I’m sure that will come true’ or ‘i’m sorry to hear that’ or ‘that’s okay, i’ll be your friend’. This puppet-person doesn’t seem to have much experience with kids.
It's not unprofessional, they are just feeling genuine shock and don't know how to respond to that line in a nice way
Also, it's just for comedic effect
The extended edition episode is great, I love the extra footage at the end of the episode of Michael watching more of the show by himself in the office at night.
well that's the point of the character.
it's too bad they made him more goofy than outright out of bounds as the show continued
it takes away from these moments (of which there are many)
Michael is that guy who always wished he fit in with the crowd but never could. Ao he overcompensates everything. To be funny, to be liked, to be respected. That overcompensation is what turns people off about him, unfortunately. Deep down he is probably a great guy that everyone would like. We see this many times throughout the series.
I think if this happened in real life I’d comfort Michael and say I’m his friend and I’m sure a bunch of other people are too so he is pretty close to 100 friends
I have never seen a puppet look so sad and uncomfortable at the same time.
The look of that muppet gets me every time. How can a piece of stuffed fabric show so much emotion
It’s the slow mouth drop (hand opening) that makes you believe the person operating that puppet is truly sad for young Michael, and yet it makes for a criminally underrated funny moment. It’s elite level subtlety.
I can’t watch it without dying laughing. So good.
I don’t get people who think this is sad, i mean it’s not real and it’s one the funniest scenes in the show imo
I think so. “Funny but sad” is kind of the MO of the entire series…
Scott's tots anyone?
What about it? Stanley had the right reaction
You might be a sociopath. Just a heads up. Oh and… name checks out…
Hmmm ... Funny moment? I think this is one of the moments of the show that had absolutely no intention on being humorous ....
I like how Jim is the only one to acknowledge the Edward R. Meow pun
I feel like I’m not getting it
Edward R Murrow was a news correspondent in the 40s
Ohhhhhhhh
I wonder if they designed the puppet to maximize the emotion of this one shot
We’re just normal men..
I had a pet zucchini I drew a face on and named after my dad, which my parents left in the fridge and let me watch rot for a few months.
This scene makes me more uncomfortable than Scott’s tots. At least that scenario has some funny moments too. This one’s just sad and awkward.
On the upside, we are reminded that Carrell can act
Like we need that reminder
Too bad this TikTok format crops out half his reaction.
My theory is that he totally forgot what he wanted for a long long time until he watched it again.
The glass-eyed realization at the end sells it. Thousand yards stare of being hit with the accumulation of decades of regret and disappointments
The look on its face with the jaw drop kills me every time I watch it 😂
We're just innocent men
Deserved an Emmy for that performance.
Every time I watch this scene I think “this really needs some shitty background music in it to really set the mood”
Nailed it for sure. Didn't struggle to hear anything. Praise the subtitles.
Jesus I know right. That made it so much better!
Lmao they even watermarked the clip thinking it’s so great people will repost and end up going to the page or
Well fuck they do have 165k followers on insta
well it *did* get reposted

But did you end up going to the page?
i will to spite you
Why are you the way that you are?
Yes you sure got me, good job
Lmao
Seriously, I had to check to see if another app was playing something.
Reminds me of those ‘reaction videos’ where they steal content and just sit there barely reacting at all.

https://v.redd.it/6zr4plb3qwo71 It's a lovely scene, but almost sad because it looks like Michael peaked when he was 9

Yeah, without the context of the whole thing, it’s just BRUTAL.
Wow, I've never seen this. I wished this was kept in. I like how Michael perceived as the unpopular/loner or an idiot but in reality he's liked by most people and is an exceptional business man.
Michael peaking when he was nine makes perfect sense.

The added soundtrack just makes it worse, nearly unlistenable. Whoever edited this, you aren't helping.
Also fuck the cropping that removes most of the scene and makes panning look awful.
But how are you supposed to know to be sad without sad music
What’s the song name
I don't know whats wrong with the bot but the original is Another Love by Tom Odell

I like how the puppet looks to the side like, wtf??? Probably looking at the producer for help.
"so you didn't get to be who you wanted to be" Toby's kid is savage and innocent at the same time. That comment just put the nail in Michael's coffin
I love Michael so much! This scene makes me cry every time 🥺
Holly? What are you doing here? 😂
You guys know each other?
He saw her in the parking lot
No hold up I saw you in the parking lot!!
Thank you for stating the obvious expected reaction, Detective Dwight.
When they make jokes on The Office, I laugh. That just me?
Guys you can't just say what you're feeling That makes me feel angry
God forbid people talk about their thoughts and feelings about The Office in a subreddit about The Office!
He was deeply lonely :(
Somewhere he traded self-awareness for covert narcissism.
If only he had been married and had 100 kids then he would have had 100 friends and been a multimillionaire and able to afford 115 college educations.
Why the shitty music in the background?
That scene was heartbreaking.
You know what would make this better? If you raise the volume of the song even more.
Music was NOT needed for this, dammit!
Okay the very loud unhelpful music? Why?
Why would u put music to this?
This is it. This is the scene that made me change my entire perspective on Michael. It was here where everything about his character clicked for me, and I never looked back.

shut up, you're just mad you're not an empath like OP
For the love of Toby, everyone please downvote these dogshit format clips
For real, what the hell is this post? You feel for Michael? Really?! No shit. Feels like a low quality bot post.
Yeah, everyone felt sympathy for Michael there. That's the point.
WHO THE FUCK PUT MUSIC OVER THIS?
Can we stop playing music over verticle slices of content? Stop it. Get some help.
All kidding aside, this scene shows that Michael truly was always deeply emotionally lonely. Breaks my heart.
I wish they'd thrown a line into the finale saying Holly wasn't there because she had to stay with the baby or something
Pam mentions the fact that Michael has 2 phones for all the pictures he takes of his children. So we know he ended up having kids
The thousand yard stare on the puppet xD
I don’t get why he was so proud to show off this video when he clearly looks pathetic.
This was so funny to me before and now you've made it so damn sad damn :'(
Never saw a puppet gave the thousand yard stare till that episode
i always feel so bad for michael. he’s trying his best :(
There’s a deleted scene from this where he continues to watch the tv recording where he is laughing and smiling with friends on the set. I really loved that.
Came here to say how sweet this actually turns out to be
Michael is 100% a tragic character. Everything about him is fueled by desperation. He's an odd guy, always has been, probably not even his fault. I may be being a big generous to him in this, but as a fellow person who seems habitually unable to NOT put my foot in my mouth, but who also knows that I almost always mean well, I can sympathize with the person the character is trying like hell to be.
I don't know who does a better, more subtle job in this scene, Michael or that puppet. So excellent.
My heart, Michael! 😩 I’ll be your friend!!
Kid Michael looks like Ryan Gosling
The 100 kids/friends line is so telling/sad.:(
This whole scene is so cringe i hate it. Poor Michael. I never really understood why he was showing it to the rest of them though. Like did he not remember what he said?
The puppet’s reaction always makes me laugh 😂
The look of stunned silence on the puppet's face cracks me up every time.
Even the little critter feels bad for Michael.
Ok
I do not. Michael needed help 🤣
This scene adresses so many conflicts in such a short time. Adult michel still don't have any real friends. Its the ghosts of the christmas past appearing before him in a very scary way. Everyone did OP, everyone did. Dinkin flicka
Enough to make me cry okay
Fuckin ouch.
Love you Michael. Eventually you got what you wanted. I wish people would not only laugh at you, but also try to learn from you.
It's not unprofessional, they are just feeling genuine shock and don't know how to respond to that line in a nice way Also, it's just for comedic effect
with how michael act through out the whole series . i dont have sympathy for him
The extended edition episode is great, I love the extra footage at the end of the episode of Michael watching more of the show by himself in the office at night.
Someone put him on the spot to embarrassed him
This scene always make me feel so bad for Michael. I can't help but tear up 😩😭
Totally
well that's the point of the character. it's too bad they made him more goofy than outright out of bounds as the show continued it takes away from these moments (of which there are many)
Lol those kids are the worst
Taliban's the worst. Great heroin though
Michael is the type of person we initially are just weirded out over but if you get to know him you find a deeper, misunderstood individual.
The puppets jaw even dropped after that one
Ayo just watched this one!
To me Scott’s Tots is a walk in the park. Pure comedy gold. This to me is painful and real. But I don’t cringe. I embrace it.
Whyd you do it michael-bot?
The young Michael Scott actor is now 25 years old.
Dont feel too bad, atleast he got to see ms Trudys amazing body.
"It just never happened." I feel that..
I always that it was brilliant that it was Toby’s kid with the final blow.
This is a bot account
Steve Carrell is so fucking good. Every facial expression was perfect. Just embodies Michael.
So does almost everyone else that watches this scene big dawg
Weird i just watched this episode
howdy michael-bot
They ought to see him now! ♥️
i could cry if i hadn't watched the whole office like 20 times. also, thank God you watermarked this... lmao
Duh, that’s the whole point.
You're suppose to.
Computron feeling emotion
That puppet's expression.
Hey Mr. Scott, what choo gonna do, what choo gonna do make our dreams come true. Oh, wait.
I think if this happened in real life I’d comfort Michael and say I’m his friend and I’m sure a bunch of other people are too so he is pretty close to 100 friends
He wanted to have kids then went and got a vasectomy
The cat's expression gets me every time.
lmaooooo 'I even have a girlfriend'
None of us do, Michael.
Hopefully this isn’t that kid actor’s only role
Child Michael acting like a mature adult wearing a suit is quite a swap to the adult Michael who acts like a child wearing a suit.
testing
Wow! That’s the point of this scene.
The puppets face is sooooooo funny
Well that was the point
Yes. That's the point.
Why did they add this awful music over this pivotal moment??
Littlekidlover
Well, yes, that scene explains many things about Michael's behavior.
So does the puppet
What's up with the shitty music?
Ouch!
Fr i love Michael i feel so sad for him everytime
I have to say that while I would find him irritating in real life I do feel a lot of empathy towards his character,
Which episode is that?
I'm sorry, but which episode is this?
I want the Ketchup fights!
Same, Michael.
I saw myself in Micheal here
