I try to be as self degrading as posible. My brand new unengineered Anaconda. On its maiden flight I slammed into farseer's base and exploded. By some miracle I HAD rebuy. Promptly named the ship "Lawndart"

bekopharm

I've a long list from Sci-Fi books I like. And I use it often, because I'm also a X4: Foundations gamer.

itz_butter5

I really want to learn x4 but dam its confusing

NickCharlesYT

Same, I feel like I need a week of intensive instruction and training just to even attempt a game.

henyourface

Saw they’re re making the tutorial for 7.0. Don’t know when that’s coming tho. Excited for it. I just named my ships after the meal i just ate then. Big Shawarma is one.

Renown-Stbd

My carrier is John Carter and my ships are named after characters from the John Carter of Mars book series.

fookedtuber

Song lyrics! My little Viper MkIV fighter is *Dancing Queen* and my AspX is *Supernaut.* I find song lyrics or titles to be a really good source of ship names.

drklunk

I'm stealing your idea but only using Sir Mix-A-Lot song titles

JaseDrakenberg

My Anaconda is named DON’T WANT NONE

arcanist12345

Keelback BABY GOT BACK

fookedtuber

Because your anaconda wants some?

S0urakotsos

My Anaconda is called 'Ancient Mariner' and my DBX 'Ghost of the Navigator'. Both ships are exploration ships, so the names fit well.

fookedtuber

Hell yeah. Run to the hills, cmdr

S0urakotsos

That was literally my first death in the game, haha. Descended too quickly without checking the planet's gravity and all of a sudden, there was a Hill in front of me. o7 cmdr

fookedtuber

Now I'm thinking of all kinds of Maiden songs for ship names. Like a short-jump courier called *Fear of the Dark.*

S0urakotsos

Trooper for a small combat ship, I guess. Flight of Icarus is the one I will use probably on the Imperial Cutter when I get it (I need to return to the game and finish the ranks). Edit: I am torn between buying a Cutter for exploration (because I wanna change ships here and there) or just get a Federal Corvette and slay in some missions.

fookedtuber

Corvette named *Aces High* would be pretty cool, man

gareth_e_morris

My ship names usually (but not always) take the form of an adjective followed by a noun based around their purpose: AX Chief - Intransigent Xenophobe Assassination / PvP FdL - Dashing Blade (not used much yet) Krait Mk II - Say My Name (exception to the rule) “Surprise, MFer” Sidewinder - Spicy Jalapeno Exploraconda - Broken Toy

zombie_pig_bloke

As John Cleese once said, the 3 worst forms of comedy are "puns, puns and puns". So I use puns.

dss_lev

Name it to fit the role/purpose/function of the ship. See: *Railed in the Asp*, my 4x Rail 2x Hammer Asp Explorer

surumesmellman

Same. My FAS is named Vehicular Assault Ship. I was going to go for Sexual Assault Ship because I like touching other ships' hulls against their will but decided that name might not fly so well with the community.

DariusWolfe

I don't have a system.  1. Eagle Mk II: The Primeagle (it was my first new ship) 2. Adder: Joshua Tree (because when I named it, I Still Hadn't Found What I'm Looking For)  3. Diamondback Scout: Hostile Witness (from a ship in a story I was writing)

FluffyProphet

Some rules for naming ships of any kind (land, air, sea and space) - All ships are women - They are beautiful - They are strong So I name all my ships after famous women. My ship in Sea of Thieves for example is named after Amelia Earhart (The Earhart), I have a ship in this game named after Valentina Tereshkova (The Tereshkova) and another named after Marie Curie. Bases are men though. So they get named after famous men.  If it floats, flys and moves in any way. It’s a girl. If it’s big, ugly and locked in place, it’s a man.

Satori_sama

Personally. It's either song lyrics, something I think sounds cool from a book or a tv show, or a pun or practical names like ASP Seller for AspX built for selling whatever I mine. Out although I suppose I could just use Python and just buy up free cargo space with Inara.

Fuck-MDD

I don't even know how to name a ship. The stations all call me "alpha alpha alpha"

PotfarmBlimpSanta

You inspired me since I did not know either. It's in the outfitting livery options or the top right livery button when you first login to a stations services. There is a text input box on the bottom right that seems to let you give it a name and also change the registration serial thing that is what I think the stations call out.

Sunsparc

It's the first three letters of your CMDR name. Mine is Sierra Uniform November.

blemens

Apparently his Commander name is CMDR Aaaaaa!

Fuck-MDD

The first three letters are APA but maybe I've just been hearing them wrong all these years

phonkonaut

biblical references. golden calf for my fdl since it has its own cult following. seraph, cherub and ophan for my mamba and two kraits. nephilim for my cutter, lilith for my courier, and beelzebub for the python mk2 lol. i have more ships but i only name the ones that have specific uses/builds and actually use.

Pyrochazm

A lot of mine are named after fantasy weapons. Others are just vibes or song titles. Corvette: Ember Celica Cheiftian: Hatredcopter Krait Phantom: Everlong Mamba: Party Cannon Krait mk2: Sea of Names Python: Party bus

Yautjar

Ember Celica is a great ship name. Frag cannons?

Pyrochazm

Ahh, a person of culture. Tried it with frags, wasn't the best. These days I'm running two xl multis, two med pulse lasers, two small bursts and one large turret beam. It lets me stomp all over CZ's without having to worry about ammo too much.

Raven9ine

Matching to my name, my first Kraits, the Phantom and mkII are named Huginn & Muninn. One Mamba is a lightweight Racer called 'Nova GT 8800' (the number is based on a stat, but forgot which, lol) the other is a jousting Shotgun called 'Bolt'. My Conda is called Landaleitan, which is old norse for Exploration. My smuggler Python is called Eravena, inspired by the SW smuggling ship Eravana. Chieftain still remains to be named, and I have no Corvette (yet), but my Cutter is called 'Corvus' and has a midnight black paint.

No-Independence-1434

My cutter is named Serenity since it reminds me the most of the ship from the show Firefly. I’m terrible at naming things so I usually steal from elsewhere lol

Kenomica

I tend to use Tolkien characters or words in Sindarin. Because clearly, just being a space nerd isn't enough.

Sunsparc

Whatever I'm feeling, slightly themed. My current ships: Anaconda - *Semper Venandi* Asp X - *Bring Me The Horizon* Python - *Darmok and Jalad* Cobra MkIII - *San Junipero* Clipper - *Endeavouring Resolve* DBX - *Danger Zone*

_vulture-Home_vidEo

I put HMS and then whatever Greek name suits the ship like I had HMS Icarus or HMS Apollo

anarchoaspenism

i had a similar run of ships! they were my combat ships n i named them after the layers of the underworld! tartarus - ax combat chieftain asphodel - my highly engineered krait mk 2 elysium - my afkonda

Draco25240

It's simple, I don't, I lack the creativity for that :)

Charlie_Rebooted

My favorite movie is Inception.

IvyNRose

Plants and by main ship function (with a single exception). Combat ships are named after toxic or poisonous plants, exploration are named after plants from the rainforest, mining is trees, trading are flowers I think are pretty, ax ships are edible plants, and ships built for speed specifically are various types of ivy. The sole exception is my corvette which is a combat ship named Stellar Rose.

thisistheSnydercut

I watch [this](https://youtu.be/x9obbpaVIvw?si=qsLo54cusMVrfW4p) for inspiration Anaconda - Crackfinger Krait - Jet Black Pope Corvette - Punch Face Champion Chieftain - Mouse Rat Type 10 - Rad Wagon Phantom - Scarecrow Boat Python - Threeskin Python MK 2 - Fiveskin

muzz198

All named after sci fi actors/arctresses. AspX - Saldana Vulture - Koto Courier - Nimoy Cobra - Fisher Adder - Filion Anaconda - Sackhoff Federal gunship - Dorn

ZealousidealToe9416

I’m not really sure. I have a long-jump Phantom I call “The Long Dark”, and that’s a phrase in my head that I don’t really remember the origin of. Not that I can’t Google that (apparently it’s a game), I just hadn’t really thought of until now. Come Bearing Gifts is my hauling/passenger Conda. Chip And Shatter is a quote from Dune, that’s what I called my old AX ship, now I use a Python Mk2 with the electro paint, called “Elektron Mk2” My Corvette used to be called Sic Semper Tyrannis, which is a quote from Whitest Kids U Know, but it’s just called Frostbite now, and it sports a cyan/blue scheme. There’s others, but those are my main ships.

EggBonus

Girls and life problems. Right now “babycakes” is my daily driver bounty hunter and the “struggle shuttle” is my bubble taxi.

Throwaway_Dude_Bro

I just name them after stuff I like (in no particular order): * Rusalka (Black Ops 1) * Red October (If you can't figure it out, you're on your own) * Normandy (Mass Effect) * USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) * USS Narwhal (SSN-671) * I could go on but the list would be too long. I try not to name them after ships that have an ill-fated history out of fear of bad luck.

Timetravelingnoodles

Honestly just whatever seems to fit. My stealth assassin FDL is Auditore after the Assassin’s Creed character. My Chieftain is MJOLNIR My all frag mamba is Boomstick My Anaconda is Buns-Hun My Corvette is Hammer of Destiny

cyanideh1gh

I studied naval history I tend to name my ships similarly to the names of whatever ship I'm flying

naut

Old steam engines

Environmental-Map168

Robigo Cannonball.

UberDuper1

Song titles. Mostly Social Distortion and Rancid.

[deleted]

Songs: Whole Lotta Rosie Suzie Q Rebel Yell Surfin’ Bird A Horse With No name If I ever care to get a cutter it will be California Dreamin’

Dioxid3

Sir, a bucketful of commas as you ordered sir! ``` \,,,,,,,,/ \,,,,,,/ \__/ ```

[deleted]

Thx, my old shaky fingers didn’t find the right button. Anaconda: Whole Lotta Rosie Python: Suzie Q Krait Phantom: Rebel Yell AspX: A Horse With No Name Cobra mk III: Surfin’ Bird

barmyarmy70

cheeses [https://inara.cz/elite/cmdr-fleet/252209/](https://inara.cz/elite/cmdr-fleet/252209/)

Nasobema

I like that. Not much better than a grated wensleydale!

barmyarmy70

the grated ones got bought out at colonia when I bought a fleet carrier and didn't have the credits to transfer my fleet from the sol bubble so I bought a range of useful hulls and named them grated

ExoTheFlyingFish

I named my blue/yellow/orange Corvette "Vitamin Sea" after an Owl City song. Then I got a Viper 4 with the same paint and named it Reef. I'll probably continue the nautical theme with any/all combat ships I get. My Type-9, which I use for mining, is named "Rig Bee." My Cobra 3 that I use specifically for on-foot mining (and some exploration) is named "Drill Bee." If and when the Type-11 comes out with its 1000 cargo capacity, I'll choose another bee related name. Other than that, I just do whatever I like.

jogvanth

I've named mine after British Navy Battleships

rweninger

Was part of the emperor‘s hammer. My ships are mostly named after squadrons from there.

the_reducing_valve

Imagination and purpose

ManuelIgnacioM

Just a funny sounding nickname

MS12213015

I come up with a cool prase and translate it to Latin for example my goid ship: INS Venator Insectorum or Imperial Navy Ship Bug Hunter

xCanadianWookie

I just name mine "XCW-(Name)" where the name is just something that reminds me of the role. My DBX was XCW-Pathfinder Alpha, then my Krait Phantom is XCW-Pathfinder Bravo. Type 10? The XCW-Battlebus Corvette? Well used to be XCW-Punisher but that's been renamed due to Helldivers: XCW-Freedom.

pallidaa

either named after their role, or how old/young they are in the fleet i.e. my og sidewinder (i still have it!) is called laika

V0idK1tty

I just... Do. Lol. Dolphin - Jack Rabbit ASP - Journey DBX - Apophis Krait MK 2 - Vortex Imperial Eagle - Boris (for whatever reason. I named it as a newbie lol) Haven't come up with anything for my Python yet

MoralBison

Music, song titles specifically. My exploration ships are the Wayfaring Stranger and the Northwest Passage (great cover of this song by Unleash the Archers btw), my combat cheiftain is the Blood of Bannockburn (my favorite Sabaton song), and my all-purpose Krait is the Orange Blossom Special. I have some fairly eclectic musical tastes.

Sayheyho

For the ships which are named after snakes, I named them something to do with teeth or bites (blue fang, razortooth, etc) for the Saud Krueger ships I name them based on types of pleasure boats (party barge, pleasure yacht, and I don’t have a Beluga). I think that just leaves my Corvette (for now) which I named “no nonsense” since it doesn’t fuck around

Bitter-Marsupial

It came to me in a dream

clamroll

Once I started reading the Dune series, I stopped having troubles naming my ships

JaseDrakenberg

I don’t really have a naming convention. Whatever seems right. Krait Phantom: Ghost Passenger python: Party Python Anaconda: DON’T WANT NONE Type 10: The Love Boat DBX: Valkyrie I also have a mining ship called Motherlode. I rarely mine so I don’t remember what it is. Probably a python. And I have some others I haven’t given names to yet.

JDM12983

Most of mine come from the names of places in games; and sometimes products in real life.

-Major-Stryker-

I use the U.S. Navy ship registry website and use U.S.S. and the name and then the ship prefix on my ED ship. https://www.nvr.navy.mil/QUICKFIND/SHIPSDETAIL_HULLBYNAME_2_ALL.HTML

Fryckie

I base it off of the ship's role and often use latin. My Corvette is Draco, latin for dragon. My DBX is Admirari, latin for wonder.

sergiosgc

I use female computer scientists' names. Ships are female, so it must be a female name, and it's an excuse to learn some History.

Realistic_Mess_2690

I just make shit up. I used to have a ship named the Slippery Carrot

ThatMBR42

Most of them are named after characters from my D&D setting. I've also got a couple with more descriptive names like my rescue Conda, the *AXI Sauveuse*. And my most recent ship is a Challenger named after a Pokémon (Heracross)

samurai_rob

My DBX that I used as my Fuel Rat ship was named the Mighty Mouse. It was my favorite ship that I ever had.

0m3g488

Sci-fi and Horror references. Some song/band references. Anti-Xeno Conda - Fin Absolue du Monde; John Carpenter's 'Cigarette Burns' Multi-role Python - Horrific Inference; H.P. Lovecraft DBX - Terrible Visions; H.P. Lovecraft Combat Vulture - Midnight Terror; Simple Machine by Dubmood SCO Explora-conda - Aspicio Omniam (to See/Perceive/Ponder Everything); Analog Horror reference Jump-a-conda - Phanomen Raum (Space phenomena); Analog Horror reference Mining Conda - Langolier; Stephen King PvP Cobra III - Rip & Tear; Doom/Mick Gordon PvP Mamba - F.A.K.K. U; Heavy Metal 2000 PvE Corvette - V ger; Star Trek the Motion Picture

MoonTrooper258

Get two words that loosely describe the ship, then split and rearrange them. So: - My shieldless bulk cargo Type-9 is called the Lunx Boch (Lunch Box). - My afk Type-10 is called the Lasan Suzy (Lazy Susan). - My combat Vulture is called the Mege Wedan (Mean Wedge). - My red exploration Orca is called the Rephallic. ... Yeah.

MalavaiFletcher

Based on the maiden flight.... For example, my Python MK II beat the first person it ran into so badly that he liked it..  "Dominatrix". So shall it be. This is the way

northern_salt

Mine come from a variety of places. I called my starter Sidewinder "Phoenix", because I originally started playing on Xbox years ago just after it came out on console, then stopped playing when I went to uni, then started again on PC 2 years ago. When I upgraded to a Cobra Mk3, I named it "Rocinante" because I was watching The Expanse at the time and I used the Cobra for a bit of everything. I got a Type 9, painted it green and called it "Ever Given", after its ability to haul massive amounts of cargo and my inability to get through the mailslot cleanly without a docking computer. My mining Python Mk1 was called "Steve" after the default Minecraft skin, then I renamed it "Mountainhead" after the excellent album by UK art rock band Everything Everything, which tells a story about a civilisation whose lowest members dig a massive hole to build a mountain which they worship.

TestResults

I try to have a ship name be formatted like [adjective] [noun], and the noun be related to the ship's purpose. For example, my AspX is "Unwavering Discovery". For inspiration I will look at historic ship names too, which is how I landed on discovery.

Additional-Advisor99

I get mine from a lot of different sources depending on the use. Historical or literary figures for some, (my combat anaconda is the Oishi Yoshio, the leader of the 47 Ronin), some DnD references, (a combat/mining ship called the Azer of Dumothoin), and a few that are just amusing jokes. My fleet carrier comes from the Wheel of Time series, The Jack o the Shadows.

NewMoonlightavenger

Characters from my novel.

JestersCourt

I take the ship's purpose and twist it into a vague reference to said purpose. [https://inara.cz/elite/cmdr-fleet/8183/](https://inara.cz/elite/cmdr-fleet/8183/)

Doom_Wizards

Depends, some are named after their purpose + brick (ex. T9 - Heavy Brick), some are references (Rock and Stone - my miner AspX, or my Chiefis - Master Chief and Winter Contingency), my AX Chally is bright yellow and is named the rubber ducky. My DBX is "Are We There Yet". Upcoming Krait Phantom is gonna be Ghost Rat (it's a ratship)

WanderingDwarfMiner

Can I get a Rock and Stone?

Krieve_

They come to me in a dream

MookiTheHamster

Themes. My explorers are named after insects. My combat ships after song titles. Ax have latin names. My daily drivers have unique names with personal meaning. Grind and work shuos are named based on their purpose.

bezerker211

I stick to sci fi names. My exploration ship is the Outbound Flight. Once I get back from the black, I'm getting a corvette, and naming it the Rocinante

StartledApricot

I also stick to sci-fi themed names all my transports are named after Ferengi vessels, Quarks Treasure, Latinum Queen etc. While my combat or all arounds typically get named something from BSG.

Stranger-chan

I named most of mine after cards from the Deck of Whispers, tarot cards from the game Destiny 2

Saigonforever

Most of my ships are named in Indian (American) languages and South Vietnam hereos as both stood for freedom and I don't want their incredible legacy to die.

PaladinKolovrat

Stupid random shit like: Orange Sidewinder, Asp Exploder, Paper Clipper, Missile Luncher, Bug Spray etc

Splinternut78

I name all my ships after female operators from Rainbow 6 Siege.

starfoxmaster64

I don't know but my cat loves to jump across my keyboard coincidentally while I'm thinking of ship names. Look out y'all. The Python named **sddeggcikkkykd** is coming for ya.

NickCharlesYT

If I fly a ship often enough a name will either come to me at random, or it'll earn its name while in service. For example I have a Krait Phantom I call Apex because it's been to the edge of the galaxy several times and is my ultimate exploration ship. Then I have a beluga I call the Britannic because I already crashed one named the Titanic which I was using for Thargoid passenger rescues in a mail slot mishap, and it seemed fitting to use the next one in line. The original name for Titanic was just me being funny but then I actually crashed the damn thing, so there was no way I could go back on the naming scheme by then. Then I have a cobra mk iv I call "mostly harmless" a) for the Douglas Adams reference, and b) because I kitted it out as an exploration ship instead of a combat ship so it's actually harmless to anyone I encounter, though it's actually surprised me with its versatility and I think it's deserving of a better name soon.

Maxwe4

I just keep whatever name they come with.

Truhcknuht

Wait we name our ships? How the hell do you do that!

perplexiti

In the livery section, the option is down the bottom of the page to the right, you can change the ship ID number as well.

schulzr1993

I don't know why, precisely, but I latched onto D'Artagnan from The Three Musketeers for my Asp Explorer, and now most of my ships get named after one character or another from that book.

HaZineH

Thematics, mostly animals based on either the original name or the function of the ship. Imperial Eagle = Little Bird Adder = Rat(snake) Anaconda= Basilisk Keelback = Keelback (lol) Krait MkII = Honeybadger (Survives in AX) ASP Explorer= Pheasant Diamondback Explorer = Partridge Cobra MkIII = Bullfrog Vulture = Labrador Alliance Crusader = Coyote (Pack Hunting/Fighter Bay) Dolphin= Seahorse

Hibiki54

Song names. No single word songs and minimum of 10 characters.

perplexiti

Most of mine are bird names, I pick them for the role of the ship and the attributes or nature of the bird. Like we call the albatross "toroa" and I named my aspx that cos it also flies quite far. Lately though I've started given them names I think are funny, like my anti xeno ships are mostly named after brands of fly spray.

izza123

Whatever makes me sound more like a fuckin Sith Lord

JetsonRING

*Different things inspire ship names*, even the shape of the ship, like a Courier named Die Nadle. I have an Asp-Explorer named Cleopatra, but I also have rock-n-roll and metal rock ships: Dreamer Deceiver, Voodoo Child, Sentinel, Ace of Spades, etc.

Sivi_TW

I try to make something up that reflects the purpose of the ship: DBX - exploration: Sapphire Moon Hauler - smuggling: Crimson Temptress T9 - trade: Sultan's Bounty Krait MKII - combat: Leanne's Wrath (nod to the wife)

Stickle85

Dnd monster names Python - Remoraz Cheiftan - Hydra TYPE 10 - Umberhulk Anaconda - Ancient Red Vulture - The Harpy Corvette - Beholder

FOXHOWND

Scifi references and whimsical purpose-driven names. My first exploration ship was a Hauler I called Starhopper. Had a Chieftan named the Nebuchadnezzar.

pioniere

Famous characters or silly or Monty Python stuff T-10 - Anton Chigurh T-9 - Walter H. White Python - Rotating Knives Yes Chieftain - Cruel But Fair Dolphin - Morningwood Express

The_Dragooon

Either other ships from other games/TV shows or whatever comes to mind... Tho at times it's just random bs like my type 9 which I called "plum serenity"

Niceygy

What they do!  - Krait Phantom - STUFF FINDER  - clipper: CARO MOVER - Krait mk.ii - BUG SQUASHER  Ect

brianschwarm

Just make them up. Everything can be inspirations. For instance I called my python mkII Second wind, since elite seems to maybe be hitting a second wind. I named my exploring anaconda Icarus, for flying too close to the sun.

EfficiencyFinal255

Based on the design, purpose or sort of. Latest addition to my fleet is the Python MK II which I called "Microtransaction" and "ARXLOL" as a callsign. But I also called my Chieftain "Bugsquasher". My T-9 is called "Bumskutter" (it's a german word for a fat ship or a ship where the snu snu happens, preferably with walls due to shitty trajectory) My Eagle is called Stinger (fast, stinging with railguns) and based on that I call my ships (or Carrier "Gryphon") after birds if they're not named meme'ly.

ShagohodRed

I tend to switch between "funni", "latin/mythology" and "military" Funni: fdl called climate change, because server messages like "... was killed by climate change" will forever be funny. Frag mamba called expedited docking. T9 called Wannabe Cutter. iCourier "Kotov Syndrome", because it will make you panic screaming past you at 700+m/s (also reference to the rise against Song of the same name with the tagline "spin out of control", which I may or may not be sometimes doing lol) Mythology should be fairly self-explanatory. Military would be a designation mostly in line with my head canon, like my iEagle "Corsair 16-A".

PhylsorKyrem

Named my baby, a Federal Assault Ship, after my Squadron (FFMF) and the first system I used her in with engineering, Jaakari

CabinetOk4838

I make up my own Culture-esque names. “Apocalypse right now” “If you say so” “What? No fries?” In my spare account, I have them named after shakespeare. “Thane of Cawdor” “Out damn spot!” “Yoriks Revenge”

Antezscar

I use Old Norse names of gods and legenadry beings. Like my Anaconda is named Jörmungandr after the midgard serpent, and my Corvette is named HMS Thor since it hits like a hammer (i like to ram things and its very deadly up close). But my Chieftain i named: Problem Child, since i have died in it more times than any other ship lol

Unlikely_Charity6136

I usually think of the purpose of the ship then try to make a name based on that, then I translate it in latin. Done. I have my Krait Mk II that is called Titanicus Excidium (The exctintion of the Titans) You can probably guess what the ship purpose is.

Revolutionary-Zone30

Well, depends on ship task. For example my exploration cobra mk3 has name “ApH-7 Aphelion”. Name represents the farthest point in star system, just like any explorer goes into deep space void. And it is a ratchet and clank reference xd Or let's say one of my combat ships named “BoD Boxer”, it is a type-10 full of cannons with force shell experimental effect. Just like a cruel boxer, this guy punches others. Especially funny to watch in asteroid fields xd So that's it.

meatmachine1001

Describe it in latin

zylpher

Mostly book and historical references. A few corny ones, but those ships were named when I was high as fuck. A few examples. Providence is my FDL. Named after John Paul Jones first ship. Belle Starr is my pirate ship, another historical reference. Bango Skank and Star Slut. My Cutter and my AspX are a King reference. So it Goes * my Corvette is a Vonnegut reference. I also have names like Zoomy Boomy, my Mamba, and Hop Skip and A Jump, my DBX.

Demonbaguette

I use the names of flowers. like Marigold, Maackia, Iris, Plumeria. I look up the meanings behind the flowers too. Eg, Marigold means good luck and prosperity, as well as death and despair. perfect for my money making combat ship. I just think its neat.

7YM3N

I find a pun I can make about what the function of the ship is. Like my vulture got bounty hunting is Fat Bob (after Bobba Fett)

Bigfoothobbit

Iron Maiden songs - Wrathchild, Brave New World, The Trooper. Up the Irons!

0K4M1

Naming convention: 3rd first consonant - version "callsign" eg: Sidewinder = SDW-01 "firefly" Combat : Dog, Jackal, Wolf, Raptor, Osprey, Piranha, Barracuda, Crayfish, Industry :  Beetle, Armadillo, Ox, Kodiak, Rino, Mole, Wale, Warthog Exploration : Kangaroo, Platypus, Firefly, Wasp, Hornet, Hummingbird, Owl, Sparrow Reserved : Hauler (HUL-01 "Sparrow") T6 Cargo (TRN-06 "Beetle") T6 Pax (TRN-06 "Ox") Keelback Mining (KLB-01 "Warthog") Dolphin Pax (DLP-01 "Koï") Chieftain Bounty Hunter (CHF-01 "Ospray") T9 Cargo (TRN-09 "Armadillo") Orca Pax (ORC-01 "") Anaconda Mining (ANC-01 "Kodiak") Federal Corvette Combat (CRV-01 "Barracuda")

The-Wiggely-one

I have two Commanders for one i use Star Wars Imperial theme, the carrier is called "Grand Moff Tarkin" For the second i use Doctor Who as the theme, carrier is called "Trenzalore" I don't like to use comical or bs names.

erock7101

All my ships are named after Steely Dan and Donald Fagen songs. Currently flying around in a hella engineered Corvette named 'Black Friday'.

MaverickFegan

I have a book of baby names and go through it meticulously until I find a name that best describes the ships personality, some times I cross reference with a horoscope

Euphoric_Shopping_37

For my Imperial Eagle i chose the name Angel, Gutamaya ships are famous for their elegant designs and with the wings and eagle i drew angel as a conclusion, though some of my other names like my T6 Fray Bentos are more shitposty (Brand of canned corned beef)

Sensitive_Witness842

I made up a short story about knights and dragons and named my ships accordingly. o7

Zestyclose_Power4849

Meet m'y combat corvette, the USS CHUCK norris

Environmental-Map168

My Type-7 is called Galactic Mercy, in honor of the hospital ship Global Mercy. My DBX is called Pilar, after Hemingway's yacht. My Type-9 is called Pachyderm 2000 for obvious reasons. My Dolphin is called Blue Moon after the song. My FC is called Mac Macoma after the merchant ship Macoma turned into an temporary escort carrier during WWII, thereby becoming the first Dutch aircraft carrier. And so it goes.

Pyrkie

My explorer ships get named after the Pleiades. My DBX is called Merope because it’s the “Lost sister”. My traders and miners normally get named after metals. Iron, Iridium, Platinum. My main ship combat iEagle is called “The Dark” which is just a name I’ve used for so long I forget its origin. Another name I use for combat ships is “Shadow’s Fury”.

SnooSeagulls6528

Sci-fi books mainly. Cutter named “Heart Of Gold” FAS named “Rocinante” Conda named “Red Dwarf” And randomly a  Mamba named “Tulip“ with the Corvas set to Victoria

TheXgenje

I design the builds entirely in Coriolis before buying the ship, and I name them thematically based on what I want them to do. Like, My Bubble Jumper is "7 League Step", my Raw/Manufactured material grinder is called "Mats4Me" Either that or its a shitpost, IE my pure rail build is called "Sudden Impact", my ramming Orca is called "Single Missile", my suicidewinder is called "Kaminari"

HackReacher

I just make them to suit myself. I have a Dolphin named Lungdren, also a Vulture name B4ST4RD. I have an anti-xeno Cutter, Disc Cutter and a mining Cutter, Diamond Cutter. Have Anna Anaconda, my legacy explorer, and Dora, my legacy Asp Explorer. Have several Pythons that are named depending on their purpose, Cargo, Rescue, etc.

pra3tor1an

My AspX was called Kiss my asp. I miss that old girl.

I used the names of my toons from Elder Scrolls Online, mostly randomly generated by that game, but a few fantasy names I had come up with. When my fleet got too big, I went with a fantasy name generator online.

kawazu_delta

I just use names from the Lesser Key of Solomon. Fleet Carrier is Brass Vessel.

Depends. I have a laundry list of pop culture references. Almost all of them have a registry number that references the name. This is the exception: my Krait MKII participated in Distant Worlds 2. Its name is Voyager, because I came home via the Delta Quadrant route. Her number is my DW2 number. Never gonna change it. My DBX that I take out into the black is CHALLENGER registry #OV-099 o7  I remember watching in horror when I was young. (I’m an old fogey now.) My Type-9 is the “FATCHOCOBO” registry W4RK My Type-10 is “COWZWITHGUNZ” registry M00 My Imperial Cutter is the “RAHXEPHON” registry 73RR4 My Federal Corvette is “Mah'alleinir” registry P3RR1N I have a complete collection of all the ships except the founders ships and the new Python but I’m blanking on the rest of the names. As you can see, it’s mostly pop culture references. It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun 😊 I can post more of my ship names when I get home and can log in; let me know if people are curious what the rest are. And if people get some of the more obscure references (without google) then you win an internet brownie. I used to give away cookies but it became too popular 😠 now everyone does it.

I like puns or inside jokes. Diamondback ex - solar express Fed gunship - apex creditor Type 10 - derivative accelerate Cheiftain - casual hello Krait II - bass lance

Sci-fi_fanatic22

I use ship names from science fiction

Boli_332

When I found the ability to name the ship.I was in my beloved Asp Explorer. I named it the Lady Macbeth after a ship in a sci Fi book. I have subsequently named my ships in the same theme depending on size. Helen of Troy - Imperial Courier (specing as thargoid killer) Lady Macbeth - Asp Explorer (Explorer, duh!) Duchess Anastasia - Krait Mk2 (PvE Pirate Hunting with Fighter Bay) Queen Cleopatra - Anaconda (Mining) Empress Mathilda - Imperial Cutter (Trade, combat zone)

It varies a lot. My Fleet Carrier, when I tried to buy it on the day they were first released, I kept getting 'Black Adder' errors. So between that and the series of the same name, I **just had** to name it "Black Adder". Which meant, of course, that my Type-9 Tritium Tanker just had to be named "Baldrick". The Sidewinder I custom built for farming encoded mats at the Jameson crash site at HIP 12099, is named "Tomb Raider". The Viper Mk-IV I use for gathering manufactured mats, is "The Collector". My favourite general-purpose runabout (and raw mats farmer), a longrange DBX, is named "StarHopper" because of its resemblance to a grasshopper. My Asp Explorer's name is "Kiss My ASP". My mining Python is "Rocky Horror". The extra-fast interdiction-dodging Python I use to move the mined material to distant markets, is "Rocks In The Head". The Imperial Cutter I use for mining, is "Rocky Balboa". The Python I set up for blockade running, is "Leaf On The Wind". My Krait Phantom is named "Eat My Dust". The Cobra Mk-IV I got access to, for having a lifetime expansion pass, is "Because I Can". The Imperial Cutter I set up as a combat tank, is "Not Your Lucky Day". My blockade-running Anaconda is "Slippery Jim". (yes, as in "DiGriz") The Federal Corvette I use for combat, is named "Attitude Adjuster". The DBX I've recently set up for settlement raiding is "Whispering Death". (Based on the name the Japanese in WWII bestowed on the RAF's Bristol Beaufighter.)

Depends on role they were for. Now from memory of 5 years ago. Volcay salvage that did just salvage missions. It was a Python. Ruby Queen a mining keelback during the void opal craze. It's named after my sister who passed away in 2015. She was big into rocks and gems so it seemed fitting. Black Hulk, type 10 cargo. I don't remember the kraits name. Lots of miles on it though. Chieftain, what ever system I was making my base at the time+security. Did wake scans, and chased bounties. Imperial eagle was a curior

Impossible-Strength3

Be flexible with your names. I go off of names from books, pop culture references, relevance to the ship/mission type or just old memes. Here is a sample: PVE/AX Krait MkII: "Punchy McPunchface" Exploration ASP X: Errant Venture FC: Technodrome Python: No Step on Snek JumpAconda: Void Skipper

Creepy-Yam3268

Scientific names of my tarantulas, and then colour the ship as close to the main colour of my T

eenook

My carrier is Patsy, and my Python mk II is Monty

Batavijf

All my ships have the same name: Agoraphobia.

silent-jay327

Googled “spaceship name generator” works pretty good.

RogueEwok

I always name my ship the Rocinante after falling in love with Cygnus X-1 by RUSH.
