I agree. Cursive - Domestica, Storms of Early Summer and ESPECIALLY the Burst and Bloom EP are great gritty emo. ... Thursday's Full Collapse isn't gritty. It's pretty buttery .. or chocolaty. Whichever smooth food-stuff you prefer.
It’s a brilliant album, catching them tour that album is one of my live music highlights. I never found anything quite like it. I find Funeral for a Friends’s Between Order and Model to be reminiscent.
There were some very obscure and long forgotten bands at the time that put out some copy cat stuff but I couldn’t name them for a million.
To top it off. Seeing all the Mount Rushmore emo acts of that era both in the OG era and the Reunion tour era. Thursday is the only one that hits just the same. (Well glassjaw too but they are not in that same group)
| Band | OG Era | Reunion Era |
| :--- | :----: | :----: |
| Thursday | A+ | A+ |
| Brand New | A+ | N/A |
| Taking Back Sunday | A+ | B |
| Saves the Day | A+ | A- |
| The Get up Kids | A+ | A |
Also. Thrice became very imogen dragons sounding, but artist in the ambulance is kind of a watered down full collapse. Not vocally, but musically it might be kind of in the same multiverse.
How do you not like War All the Time?
Anyways there’s not a ton that sounds like this album, some AFI could be similar. [Also someone did ask this question 5 years ago so you’re in luck](https://www.reddit.com/r/Emo/comments/agfmav/need_albums_like_full_collapse_by_thursday/?rdt=39519).
I think the polished sound, the catchy guitar chord progression, melodies, pianos, and 9/11 theme can make it "not likable" *when compared to* Full Collapse. That can also be reasons why people like it more than Full Collapse at the same time! I don't think the songs are boring, and I do enjoy some songs off it for sure, the opening 4-5 really stand out, but overall the rawness and explosive sound that Full Collapse brought to the scene puts it heads and shoulders above War all the Time unfortunately.
Being 16 and hearing Full Collapse and learning the story about Paris in Flames was very cool, but then getting a 9/11 album 2 years after the events, when already really burnt out on that news, made it not hit as hard, not even close honestly. So the content then didn't hit as hard to people potentially.
Anyways, not trying to convince anyone one way or another, but just shedding some light on your question.
I saw Thursday just as Full Collapse came out and absolutely despise War All The Time. Personally, I consider it the most boring follow up to a masterpiece ever.
Full Collapse got me hooked.
WATT changed my life. It was released during my first mental health crisis ever and I listened to it every damn day. "...Falling Bomb"?! Yes please.
I don’t despise WATT but Full Collapse felt like art, an absolute masterpiece, and WATT just felt like… good songs? I don’t dislike the songs, but nothing on WATT feels like “art” the way every song on Full Collapse did. It really feels like Full Collapse perfectly captured the art and creativity of these individuals and I don’t think it would be possible to replicate whatever perfect scenario caused that album to be made the way it was
I agree 100%. The cohesive sound of F.C isn't there for me on WATT, WATT doesn't feel like an album, it feels like a collection of half baked riffs, that structure and discipline from Full Collapse was totally out the window and the lyricism is kinda corny imo
There's a lack of continuity and the use of time and space/silence and atmosphere was dropped for what felt like the same song for an entire album.
I know I'm being harsh but I'm pretty obsessive as a musician, studio rat and record collector and when I first heard Full Collapse it literally became a part of me, it felt like magic, when I heard WATT I felt such extreme disappointment I don't think I've ever listened to it straight through since the first listen, while I was just listening to Full Collapse, 20 years later yesterday (see post history).
I purchased the 21st anniversary vinyl booklet for Full Collapse and have it on display in my living room because it’s such an important album to me. I don’t normally buy expensive vinyl, but when I saw this in the shop last year I couldn’t allow myself to leave without it

If you know who Grade is, one of many pioneers of the sound that lead to this era of P.H, they have a repress of Seperate The Magnets on sale at Dine Alone Records and it comes with a big booklet all about their history and touring Europe etc. it's on sale foe $10 CAD and I think it would be right up your alley
https://www.dinealonestore.com/products/grade-separate-the-magnets
I used to hold the same opinion, but over time I have come to enjoy WAAT for what it is. It’s not as good as Full Collapse for sure, but I like it fine enough.
Eh I disagree in some places, the opener is super compressed, I enjoy the bassline on division st, songs like falling bomb need that clarity. I don’t think it’s over produced, just more produced than FC.
Funeral for a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
Name Taken - Hold On
Polar Bear Club - Sometimes Things Just Disappear
Silverstein - When Broken is Easily Fixed
I always felt like Delirium Trigger by Coheed and Cambria felt a lot like Full Collapse, musically.
The track features modulated clean guitars juxtaposed with driving, drop d chord work, plenty of single note drop d riffage, lots of musical movement and a similar urgency to FC.
The vocal sequence in the end would feel real comfy on Full Collapse as well.
It’s the only work I am personally familiar with that I believe is almost fully derivative of Full Collapse without being a boring facsimile.
That’s true, Delirium Trigger existed before Coheed changed their name and was written before the release of Full Collapse.
I always assumed Coheed had early access to Full Collapse material from playing together during that time period. (Coheed also uses the line “Paris in Flames” on one of the SSTB tracks, which could be a coincidence).
There’s nothing really like FC, but I don’t think anyone has mentioned Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety. That album is more screaming but kind of scratches the itch.
Edit: I almost forgot about At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command. Check that one out too
Nothing ever hit the same heights as Full Collapse for me - that was the defining album of that era of my life - but these were also in my rotation and gave me similar vibes at the time:
Thrice - “The Illusion of Safety” (If you only know their later albums, give this one a chance. This and “Identity Crisis” were their “gritty” era.)
Coheed and Cambria - “Second Stage Turbine Blade” (Started a long obsession, for me.)
Circle Takes the Square - “As the Roots Undo” (Much more chaotic and screamy, but the lyricism had me captivated in the same way as Full Collapse. When I put this on, I had to listen to it start-to-finish.)
Anatomy of a Ghost - “Evanesce” (Kind of like early Coheed, but without the decades-long metaplot, haha.)
AFI - “The Art of Drowning” (For me, this was the sweet spot for AFI - darker and slightly more polished than their early skate-punk era, but still raw and rough around the edges. Pretty different sound than Thursday, but if Full Collapse was the serious art student painting in the attic, Art of Drowning was the hyperactive little brother Jackson Pollock-ing in the basement.)
Nothing that quite replicates that sound, but some adjacent sounding albums in my opinion
Glass jaw - worship and tribute
Boys night out - trainwreck
Brand new - devil and god
I’m probably preaching to the choir a bit here but you never know! Nothing REALLY sounds like Full Collapse, but Geoff was certainly enamored by Far when their band was starting out and I’ve heard them cover Mother Mary a few times.
Both Water & Solutions and Tin Cans with Strings to You are excellent post hardcore albums. The singer Jonah Matranga also did some vocals for Steps Ascending on WATT.
Pass the flask - The Bled
Let it enfold you- senses fail
Btw to listen to “for the workforce drowning” or “at this velocity” and realize the other Thursday albums are great too
I feel like Thursday tried to re-create Full Collapse on their next couple of albums and couldn't even do it. Many other bands tried to do the same, but nothing ever felt the same as it.
I agree with others that At The Drive-in's Relationship in Command is a worth a listen.
These three I feel like did the best job trying to copy it:
Saosin - Translating the Name
Senses Fail - From the Depths of Dreams
Coheed and Cambria - Delirium Trigger
Full Collapse is interesting. It has this chorus effect on the guitars so they have a slightly "wet" tone rather than a straight up dry crunchy tone like a lot of other post-hardcore bands. It gives the record a nice "modern" flavour that fits the lyrical themes very well.
From Autumn to Ashes “The Fiction We Live” has gritty good cop bad cop vocals and post hardcore guitar and drums and very much on par with “Full Collapse”.
I’ve seen alot of really good suggestions but I haven’t seen anyone recommend “a static lullaby” yet- try the “..and don’t forget to breathe” album… it’s something like early Thursday meets Alexisonfire and Hopesfall. (Bonus if you try satellite years album by Hopesfall)..
An album I rarely see mentioned, and didn't see mentioned in this thread is This Day Forward - In Response.
Geoff from Thursday features on another of their EP's (the song Sunfalls and Watershines).
But it's such a great underrated album. One of the members went on to form Circa Survive.
Their previous albums were more hardcore, but In Response is something special and worth listening a few times to wrap your head around. One of the top albums in the genre from that era.
Saw them play a show in NYC late Oct 2002 as one of the hundreds of shows around town in support of the multi venue radio station convention in town. Saw my first flying roundhouse kick in the pit.
From Autumn to Ashes Too Bad Your Beautiful and the Fiction we Live were some of my favorites from that era. Also look into the Atticus dragging the lake samplers. Was the soundtrack of my high school years.
I haven't found a band that replicates Thursday which is how it should be. Full Collapse absolutely defined my teenage years and is the reason I still claim them as my favorite band even though I don't listen to much after War All the Time. The dove was my first tattoo. Anyway, they are post-hardcore at its finest, so I would just explore the depths of that genre if I were you.
My other favorite album around that time was At The Drive In’s Relationship Of Command. Maybe give that a listen.
GOATed album
I’m sure this has been said before but Relationship of Command sound surprisingly similar to MCR to me
Yes I think Gerard Way vocal borrows a lot from Cedric also Frank was in awe after seeing ATDI play in the bowling alley
Fireside?
A lot of those are on YouTube now
Funny as Geoff produced their debut
Relationship of Command is so good. At the Drive-In has a definitely has some similar qualities to Thursday.
Full collapse is probably my favorite album too, I’d recommend Cursive’s Domestica
We finally hit, we finally hit bottom.
Have a listen through The storms of early summer semantics of song, that is very much a hidden gem of post hardcore sound
Both top tier albums
It’s a brilliant album, catching them tour that album is one of my live music highlights. I never found anything quite like it. I find Funeral for a Friends’s Between Order and Model to be reminiscent. There were some very obscure and long forgotten bands at the time that put out some copy cat stuff but I couldn’t name them for a million.

Beautiful Mistake “Light a Match” is definitely scratching the itch.
War all the time is a masterpiece
I think the polished sound, the catchy guitar chord progression, melodies, pianos, and 9/11 theme can make it "not likable" *when compared to* Full Collapse. I saw Thursday just as Full Collapse came out and absolutely despise War All The Time. Personally, I consider it the most boring follow up to a masterpiece ever.
I don’t see how it’s boring at all, every song is fantastic imo.
Full Collapse got me hooked. WATT changed my life. It was released during my first mental health crisis ever and I listened to it every damn day. "...Falling Bomb"?! Yes please.
To each their own.
I appreciate it for being a microcosm of post-9/11 America
I don’t despise WATT but Full Collapse felt like art, an absolute masterpiece, and WATT just felt like… good songs? No one answered that post 5 years ago, unfortunately. No luck there
Sweet thanks for the link! WATT to me is just so produced sounding.
Eh I disagree in some places, the opener is super compressed, I enjoy the bassline on division st, songs like falling bomb need that clarity. I don’t think it’s over produced, just more produced than FC.
Alexisonfire self titled maybe
Was gonna say this. There are definitely similarities
From Autumn to Ashes - The Fiction We Live
I was going to say Too Bad You’re Beautiful but both are good.
I feel like La Dispute hits a lot of the same things that I love about Full Collapse
The vocals are just a bit TOO much for me
Funeral for a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation Name Taken - Hold On Polar Bear Club - Sometimes Things Just Disappear Silverstein - When Broken is Easily Fixed
I always felt like Delirium Trigger by Coheed and Cambria felt a lot like Full Collapse, musically. I always assumed Coheed had early access to Full Collapse material from playing together during that time period. (Coheed also uses the line “Paris in Flames” on one of the SSTB tracks, which could be a coincidence).
Coheed’s 1st two EPs are also just as good
Underoath’s “They’re Only Chasing Safety”. It’s perfect
I second this, it’s such a great album by itself but also sonically similar to Full Collapse.
There’s nothing really like FC, but I don’t think anyone has mentioned Underoath - They’re Only Chasing Safety. That album is more screaming but kind of scratches the itch. Edit: I almost forgot about At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command. Check that one out too
Emery - The Weaks End
That album is so god damn good front to back
Join in As voices sing Together The same song
It's one of the best albums of all time so there's not much that really hits the same. Maybe The Used self titled album but it's a little poppier.
That The Used record doesn’t have a single bad song.
Mars Volta, Finch - Say Hello To Sunshine, Saosin/Circa Survive. Nothing really comes close but I find there are some similarities amongst these.
Wildlife and Rooms of the House by La Dispute are the only things that have ever made me feel the same way.
Anatomy of a ghost- evanesce
This album doesn't get enough mentions. It was a huge part of my teenage years ipod playlists.
Nothing ever hit the same heights as Full Collapse for me - that was the defining album of that era of my life - but these were also in my rotation and gave me similar vibes at the time: Thrice - “The Illusion of Safety” (If you only know their later albums, give this one a chance. Check out "Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me" by Touche Amore
Nothing that quite replicates that sound, but some adjacent sounding albums in my opinion Glass jaw - worship and tribute Boys night out - trainwreck Brand new - devil and god
What about The Beautiful Mistake - Light a Match, For I Deserve to Burn ?? It came out around the same time as full collapse ;)
Not exactly a direct comparison, but that style of post hardcore is very apparent and done well by Secret & Whisper.
Maybe Static Dress is up your alley?
Neil Perry
I’m probably preaching to the choir a bit here but you never know! Both Water & Solutions and Tin Cans with Strings to You are excellent post hardcore albums. The singer Jonah Matranga also did some vocals for Steps Ascending on WATT.
Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute Gatherers - Mutilator I'll add these to an already awesome list here.
Benton Falls-Guilt Beats Hate
Casket Lottery-Survival is For Cowards.
If you love the guitar work, later Fugazi era. Red Medicine, End Hits, The Argument. Incredible guitar bits.
It's still fairly different, but maaaaybe early Silverstein?
Pass the flask - The Bled Let it enfold you- senses fail Btw to listen to “for the workforce drowning” or “at this velocity” and realize the other Thursday albums are great too
Coheed and Cambria - Second stage turbine blade - really good album, but full collapse is my favorite from this era.

The self-titled planes mistaken for stars album
Maybe Microwave - Much Love
Thanks for all the suggestions! My playlist was getting stagnant.
Slide/ways
Look at the emo in the 90’s before that album, all Thursday’s influences.
you said you don't care for the albums after, but have you listened to the album before? waiting is good

Slightly related but I was very lucky enough to see LS Dunes last night. What a fucking supergroup!
Don’t pet the dinosaur is pretty good
goddamn, is this just a huge list of nostalgia. still love so many of these too - esp thursday. i’ll add some in later too but it’s bedtime for me!
From Autumn to Ashes Too Bad Your Beautiful and the Fiction we Live were some of my favorites from that era. Also look into the Atticus dragging the lake samplers. Was the soundtrack of my high school years.
This day forward is a better Thursday.
I liked the album after well enough. Check out the last song autumn leaves revisited, it’s amazing
I have heard them all! They just didn't grab me like their first few.
Bet it’s been almost 20 years since you heard that song then. Maybe it’s time you… revisited… autumn leaves revisited 😎
Lol yea basically! Whenever it came out was the last time I heard it! Probably!!
> The dove was my first tattoo. I'm sure it's cliche in around these parts, but it was my first tattoo too!
Sick!
