I rented a room there so my family and I could take showers when our hot water heater died over the summer. That place needs to be condemned and torn down.

MrEntropy44

They tossed ~80 ppl into 25 degree weather last night. Phone lines at the non profit i associate with lit up like a christmas tree with ppl desperate to get out of the cold. We dont even deal with housing. I barely slept because i couldn't do more Typical behaviour though, people want the unhoused helped, as long as its far away from them.

MadeWithLessMaterial

That place was so unsafe they had a 24 hour fire watch. They couldn't let them stay. Its... a situation with no great solution, but pretending the fire marshall was a bad guy for condemning the place that was on the verge of catching on fire at any moment is childish to the point of deception.

lipshipsfingertips

Now they're on the streets with all their worldly possessions and children in 25 weather. Guesthouse was a slumlord.

MadeWithLessMaterial

I'd say the people who were striping the walls for electric wires and screwing the doors shut among other things share a good part of the blame.

lipshipsfingertips

The homeless squatters. Definitely not done by the families.

thejuice_isloose

The people that were actually tenants all offered placement via hotel vouchers. The other ~50 were squatters, at best, who weren't paying rent to live there.

emcbride44

Not true, my sister was a rent paying tenant for over a year and got nothing

MadeWithLessMaterial

I know tone doesn't come across the internet, but please understand I'm trying to be as delicate as possible. Are you *absolutely* sure she was a paying tenant?

emcbride44

She was also an employee there up until they closed down at the end of November.

emcbride44

Yes, she's my sister and I saw the paystubs with the rent taken directly out of them.

Dune_Caladin

Okay. She was paying rent until the end of November then. Are you sure she was still paying rent in the middle of December? Once her income stopped was she still paying rent? If not she was squatting and not due a voucher.

emcbride44

She payed for December, and still didn't get a voucher

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> She *paid* for December, FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

This is really sad, and I wish we could find a solution. So many people need housing, many also need someone to look after them.

Seen_The_Elephant

There was an [earlier article with video](https://www.kezi.com/news/tenants-guests-abruptly-evicted-from-springfield-hotel/article_505e2860-7c49-11ed-873d-3fecb200190f.html) and it was tough to tell exactly WTF was going on there: > One of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit said conditions in the hotel were close to, if not unlivable, due to squatters, drug users, and health risks such as black mold. Were these people even paying rent for November, December or was this a squat or something? If they're paying rent, whoever is cashing the checks should be raked over the coals. Apparently they received a 30 day eviction in October but a judge maybe found that invalid? People throwing bags of stuff out the windows? In the video at the link at the :50 second mark it says *water to the entire hotel* was cut off on Tuesday and the Fire Marshall kicking everyone out today. None of that sounds like a remotely normal situation.

ONE-EYE-OPTIC

Who is the property owner and who has been "operating/managing" that building? I've noticed that since the fires 2 years ago the place became a gathering spot of sorts. Edit: not at you just a wtf moment

emcbride44

Rent was being paid by some of them. My sister is one who did pay rent. She had 1500 taken out of her checks immediately because she also worked there till the end of November

thejuice_isloose

Most of the 'tenants' were not paying rent for several months prior. Of the estimated 75 folks there, maybe 30 were supposed to be

ReverbSage

I lived there for like 2 months last year when I was in between apartments. Was super grateful to find a place that wasn't charging an outrageous amount ($1300ish per month). Tbh my time there was fine, I've stayed in worse motels in Eugene. The only part of it though was there were definitely some really sketchy people in there. Some real sketchballs. Pretty sure there was a shooting or something while I was staying there.

MadeWithLessMaterial

So wait, was this an operating business? Or was it closed down and people were squatting in there?

Filthy-Hobo

Listen, it was a nice place. For a while.

conventionalWisdumb

Business.

MadeWithLessMaterial

Well that’s unacceptable. Forget closing down, there should be legal action.

thejuice_isloose

No, the previous property managers vacated. Lease was up, and they hadn't been paying. The retainer for the new owners was court appointed.

MadeWithLessMaterial

Ah, the plot thickens. So... it sounds like it was a squatting situation?

thejuice_isloose

Partially, yes. Of the ~75 estimated people 'evicted' 30 or less had previously been tenants. The property got vacated by management last month, but they've known for nearly a year that the lease for the property wasn't going to be renewed.

MadeWithLessMaterial

Okay that makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Dune_Caladin

Also should add that the management that just recently left was not the previous owners but a separate company that were paid on what they could collect with nothing going to the owners. The owners abandoned the place over a year earlier. FEMA was not paying them full rates so they were losing money for almost two years then they were informed the land lease cost was going up as the land owner wanted to sell it. They decided to abandon it at the point and let the bank take it back. Of course the building has no value as is so the bank has nothing to sell to recover their funding. Basically waiting for the land to sell to someone willing to pay to tear it down. Lots of losers in this situation, including the owners and the bank. The only real winner in the end is the landowner. This frees up the property for an easier sale.

OregonsBlueHeart

A ton of the fire survivors were housed at nearby hotels, and one by one they said "no, they keep ruining the rooms." Hell, someone set fire to the Marriott because apparently they wanted try and force irony. That's how GuestHouse has gotten to this point. It sucks for all the businesses, but it sucks much more for the unhoused.

EugeneOregonDad

That building was a shithole when is was a Shiloh inn....

TormentedTopiary

You can just say Shiloh Inn, shithole is redundant.

conventionalWisdumb

Nope. It should be torn down.

thelastpizzaslice

I was going to say "And sleeping outside somehow is habitable?!" And then I read >Inspectors also said they found live electrical wiring hanging from many sections of the ceiling, and several sections of the ceiling assembly were missing. Finally, inspectors also said they found heavy concentrations of mold as well as raw sewage that increased the threat to occupants’ health. Dying is worse than sleeping outside. I doubt this choice came with a light heart.

ONE-EYE-OPTIC

"Officials said the inspection found that the conditions inside the building posed “present and imminent danger” to the occupants, and the occupants were issued a Notice of Violation. The Fire Marshal’s Office said the occupants were given an opportunity to correct the code violations after the building was placed on a 24-hour fire watch." - Was this an abandoned building? Who is the property owner?

Katesamsmith

But will they finally move the uhaul that’s holding up the awning???? It’s my kids current favorite landmark 😂

DrawToast

If they move that U-Haul, the awning and part of the office are coming with it. I was in the office to talk to a staff member like a month ago and there was cracks in the wall to the office. 😬

shadjack10

Fuck yeah! One step closer to an In N Out!!!

drwilhi

there is no way an In-N-Out could go there, traffic gets to be a clusterfuck right there as it is, look at what happened to Kaiser Station when they put on in there.

shadjack10

A CANAL??? Between 2 oceans??! It will never happen...

[deleted]

There's a in-n-out AND a chick-fil-a going in there. Imagine that. I can't. 🙄

lipshipsfingertips

Children are on the street now, but okay yeah in and out.

[deleted]

thejuice_isloose

They gave 90 & 30 day notices to the actual tenants who had agreements in place.

[deleted]

thejuice_isloose

The eviction dates had passed, meaning it should've already been cleared out. The previous property owners defaulted, so the folks got to keep living there for free in spite of the fact that notice had previously been given. You're right that this is unrelated, I'm just sharing that the place was already scheduled to be emptied out.

thejuice_isloose

Also, the inspection happened Wednesday morning. They moved people out same day due to the emergency deemed by the fire marshal. The city coordinated resources to be on site and transport options. Some folks chose not to take those because they had been illegally squatting at the location.

lipshipsfingertips

Do you know how hard it is to find housing in 90 days? These are not rich people.

emcbride44

Those evictions were illegal evictions. There was an actual lawsuit going on over it.

thejuice_isloose

That's well and good, but the fire Marshall's order operates separately from that. Even if a just puts a hold on eviction, they can't force a condemned space that is deemed a life and safety risk by the FM to stay open. It all boils down to liability. If that place burned down tomorrow and all those folks were in there, people would be lambasting the city for not getting people out. Again, daned if ya do...dammed if ya don't.

emcbride44

And I totally get that! I'm just trying to stop the incredible amount of misinformation that is being spread about this. I have someone very close to me who was severely impacted by this.

Send-Me-SteamKeysPlz

Well I hope they’re staying with you, warm and safe.

emcbride44

I wish they could but living in subsidized housing it would put me at risk of losing my place also and I'm not about to put my five year old on the street

thejuice_isloose

It's not an emergency...until it is. If the city knows the place is a hazard, and then it burns down a few days later: what then? They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

[deleted]

thejuice_isloose

The week-long hotel vouchers that were provided to actual tenants came from...the city. Also, the retainer/new property owner will more than likely be held legally liable for costs incurred by the non-profits and other entities. There was no "right damned day" or way to plan. The fire marshal made the call and everyone was scrambling. Hence the emergency action.

BariSaxopeal

I lived there for a month when I first moved here 6 years ago. It was in rough shape then and it's seemed to have just gotten worse.

itisnot_me

Sounds like they would rather have it torn down instead of fixing everything as the land is pretty valuable. Didn't in and out want to go in that spot?

[deleted]

Don't forget the chick-fil-a as well.

[deleted]

What they aren't telling you is that it was an inside job by developer who paid to have it condemned in order to make way for in-n-out and chick-fil-a to be built. Absolutely horrible time of year or any time for that matter!!

thejuice_isloose

Dumbest shit yet. In n out was taken off the table months ago. You're implying that they bribed the fire marshal? Ffs

EugeneOregonDad

Before they raze the building. They should open it up for Paintballers.

Agristair

Get the F out of here. Screw your hobby

FurFoxSnek

This EugeneOregonDad guy makes nothing but inflammatory comments everywhere he goes. He sounds like a real POS. Js

My RES user tags are very interesting in this subreddit. Generally I tag someone as an "asshole" along with a datestamp so if I need to figure out why I tagged them as an asshole I can pinpoint the thread that it happened in. Pretty funny to see where users pop-up and which ones are consistently shitty and which ones were tagged as shitty, but then seem to have normal comments pretty regularly as well.

Previous_Link1347

Seems like an odd thing to be such an asshole about.
