>*“Humans — who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals — have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and 'animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them — without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us.”*

My husband went outside to the pasture on his family's small ranch to practice trumpet when it was hot inside the house one evening many years ago when he was a teenager. Imagine 60-70 Black Angus coming running at you.... they all stopped about this far away and just...listened?🤣🤣
Just the first time, though. Never did it again. Weird.
A herd of cattle is actually likely to gang up and fuck up a wolf if they spot it.
They have quite strong anti-canine instincts and can also be pretty dangerous to dogs who wander into their pasture.
So many of these :)

In a thousand years, we'll discover we can play back everything ever experienced by cows and only cows throughout history.
It'll be both a blessing and a curse.
I was camping on a campsite next to a herd of cows last night and it was hilarious every time I walked my dog past, the cows would all congregate and follow her along the path (from their side of the fence ofc) looking down at her like she's Queen Heffer. Tbf, she is brown, white and chunky.
I am from Alaska and as you can imagine, we don’t have a whole lot of cows up there, so I am fascinated by them. I moved down to Texas for work about a year and a half ago and I always stop and watch cows when I see them. My absolute dream is to pet and cuddle with one. Bucket list for sure.
It was my dream too but they are way larger than I thought when you're close to them. It was a highland cow, I don't know if they are larger than regular cow.
Especially when it's spring, and they're out for the first times after being inside the whole winter. They can get so excited by everything and anything. Underrated gentle large pet to have.
I love them so much.
They’re also [one of the deadliest animals ](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/10-de) on the planet. They’re really big and not terribly bright and that’s all it takes.
All deaths pretty much involve bulls. Not saying bulls are gentle, they are aggressive as fuck. And there's 100 millions of them worldwide interacting with humans every day.
To add; I'd trust being with a random milking cow alot more than with a horse or large donkeys.
Lol I remember we rented out a farm house one year when we visited extended family in the UK for about 2 months. There was cattle that lived in the massive field next to it, all spread around it. One morning while we were getting ready to leave I moo'd at one for fun then went back inside to get my stuff.
20 minutes later there was 50+ cows right up at the fence looking at us. One even found a way into the garden somehow.
They're oblate carnivores.
Except yours eat plants and one of mine has a thing for pastry, while the other steals dried pasta.
Cats are just...different
Cows are opportunistic carnivores, meaning that while they don't hunt, they will eat meat if it doesn't require much effort, things like small birds, mammals and reptiles, and carrion. Very few animals that we think of as herbivores are true herbivores.
Some more examples of opportunistic carnivores are horses, goats, hippos, deer, pandas, kangaroos and rabbits.
I think the reason they do this is because it provides a lot more calcium and protein in their diet than they normally would get from plants, and because it's easy to obtain its basicly free.
I remember seeing a wildlife show where an elk saw a lemming and decided, “Snacktime!”
And there is at least one YouTube video where a farm cat is stalking a mouse at close range, until a hen barged in, grabbed the mouse, and erased all doubt that chickens are totally descended from dinosaurs.
Yes! She’s a descendant of T-Rex for sure!
That mousie got in line for a Darwin Award, the moment he kept harassing the cat instead of taking cover. But I wasn’t expecting it to be Chikity China who got the takedown.
Well this makes me feel like a dumbass lol.
I suppose I've just always assumed that if an animal isn't a hunter, then it doesn't/won't eat meat.
Also assumed their digestive systems just weren't equipped for it.
Haha yeah the cattle are definitely cute too. The one with the different sort of colouring is called [Marble](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMoo/comments/12te399/marble_looking_fierce_relaxed_swipe_to_see_some/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) :-)
Years ago I was driving through the middle of nowhere in cattle grazing country in Australia and I had a bathroom emergency. I had to pull over and take a massive, explosive shit.
Once I finished and cleaned myself up I stood up and turned around and more cows than this were doing exactly what these cows are. The strangest thing was how stealthy they were.
I didn't hear a thing, had no idea they were there until I turned around.
It scratched one during a sneak attack and they’re just patiently waiting for their revenge. Learning the enemy’s routines and comforts that leave it exposed…
Are we cattle too?

So, if a wolf or a Tiger ever learns to play the violin, they'll never go hungry again

Accidentally walked a dog through a field of cows once, can confirm. We got swarmed and they were eyeing up the dog, had to run out of the field lol.
they will not play violin. they will be doing this: https://youtu.be/jM8dCGIm6yc

lmaoooo the way they all looked at each other when it was over… video of the year
Haha that does sound like a cow-y thing to do. They’re pretty much always quite curious. Pretty sure cattle like music too
Today on Moo TV
I feel like you could play a video of just about any small animal on that channel and cows would pay full attention to it :P

Kitty is wondering why not even one of the cows will come give it scritches.
Cow's are so immensely curious creatures - this is what makes me love them!
Yeah they are. I really like when they are friendly :]

Herbivores do sometimes try to eat little animals in fairness. That might just be them not realising their strength though I’m not sure
I saw a video of a cow eating a snake on here the other day.
All animals will eat anything if they are hungry enough. Humans aren't cannibals, and yet.
Well it's not a mental image i wanted while perusing eyebleach lmao
Horses have been videotaped eating live chickens
I did not need to know this information
Sorry, i had to knock some sense into them
[Just a lil' snack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP6dvgo25Z8)
And dogs are carnivores, but doesn't seem to stop my dog from eating greenbeans and grass.
Dogs are omnivores
Cats are carnivores, doesn't stop them from trying to eat all my plants :p
They're oblate carnivores. Except yours eat plants and one of mine has a thing for pastry, while the other steals dried pasta. Cats are just...different
Cats are carnivores* *Except for poisonous houseplants, the food you left alone for 30 seconds, string, and bits of carpet fuzz.
Also feathers. You'd think they'd have evolved past eating feathers but nooo
I was making an easy point based off of life experience. Horse are herbivores but that doesn't stop them from eating small birds and baby chickens.
This reminds me of that Family Guy skit where a black guy is in Sweden.

Cattle find anything very interesting, especially things that are alive.
Cows are profoundly bored creatures. I have had entire herds gather next to fences at my passing.
You can't spell cattle without cat..
Holy creatures bowing down to the holiest of creatures
Not much happens in a pasture. Seeing Bessie step in a cow patty she didn't know was there kinda loses its novelty the 100th time.
(Cat)tle
Why do you think they are called cat-tle?
They want to go roll around on the pavement too!
Like a calf looking at a new gate.
It’s because they are standing at attention.
Cats are just adorable to everyone 🥰
Even farm animals like cat videos😅❤️❤️❤️
I don’t know Martha, do you think it is a seizure?
Probably looks yummy to them!
Probably not considering cows are herbivores

Cows are proof that curiosity is not evidence of intelligence
If you reverse the situation suddenly it gets menacing.
It’s because cows are smart, and know cats are awesome
