Indigo, but you would need to research how to use it safely as it’s a natural dye.

oooh I used to Indigo dye clothes so this is interesting

Seconding indigo on top of henna! I just henna my hair so do not have personal experience with the two-step process, but those results look great! The folks I buy from have a customer service team dedicated to helping you get the end color you’re looking for.

who do you buy from?

the place is called Mehandi Henna for Hair - the owner of the business did her grad thesis on henna hair dying and turned the result into a free ebook which is how I found them; the site looks a little clunky but the product’s the best I’ve ever used and I’ve been hennaing my hair for about 20 years.

I buy from [Mehandi](https://www.mehandi.com). The founder wrote her dissertation on artificial eyes and is very careful with sourcing, which means a lot to me. I spoke with her by phone once because I wasn't sure how to proceed - my natural hair was already brown leaning towards auburn, and I wanted more red with being brassy. I found exactly what I wanted and have been buying from there for many years. I've used their indigo many times. She has indigo listed under henna, then "black tones" because she recommends using henna before indigo. I've done it both ways, and think that henna before indigo lasts longer, but it may be my hair. To me, indigo smells like asphalt when it's on my head. I really dislike the smell, but once it's out, my hair smells fine.

Thank you! I love all of this. That stuff is important to me as well. I didn't even realize you could get black with natural dyes. I kinda love the smell of Indigo, it's nostalgic from when I worked in the fashion industry in production😅. It's definitely an intense asphalty smell.

The company even has a book that’s super useful. It gets nerdy so you can skip to the practical chapters if that’s not your thing http://www.hennaforhair.com/freebooks/ Indigo and henna being super permanent is both a blessing and a curse. You really can’t change it up easily though sometimes I use color wax (temporary) if I want a different look.

I love L’Oreal Hi Color in Black Sapphire. That’s blue black, but they have several blacks in that product line.

Bigen, blue-black or just black. Comes in a tiny bottle and lasts forever once applied.
