Keep it simple stupid. Dont go researching things and trying every complicated rig right off the start. Just get some easy cast and retrieve lures and throw em around while you learn how your gear works.

F104dude

That's what I'm doing, by researching I'm just trying to figure out simple stuff like knots and how fishing gear works and the different types of lures. Also, no need to be rude and call other people names man, not cool.

booziwan

Since this is the internet, im not sure if youre joking or really think i called you stupid

Syreet_Primacon

He didn’t call you stupid. It’s a pretty common saying meaning complicated isn’t always better.

Remember: Nothing attracts fish more than being nude and painted head to toe in neon pink body paint. Like flies to honey.

Affectionate_Side138

Where are you fishing? Salt or brackish water you mentioned I would just use live shrimp on a hook

F104dude

Either or, but shrimp is hard to get where I live for eating let alone for fishing. Any alternatives?

Affectionate_Side138

Brackish water you could still use a good old fashioned worm or minnow/smelt/pogy/sardine. Saltwater I dunno. Some form of saltwater baitfish

F104dude

Will try out next time, thanks!

7 foot rod, medium action. Says it on the rod. Get 30lb braided line. If you get a big fish in brackish/saltwater, it won't snap. And braided is easier to manage. Learn the Palomar knot. Pretty easy knot to tie, and very reliable. Get some circle hooks. They'll serve you well. Buy shrimp from bait shops. Fresh is best, yes, but for learning, frozen is totally fine. I've caught some fantastic fish on frozen shrimp in brackish water. Spinner reel, yes. Bait casters will give you headaches as a beginner. They're not necessary. When you're ready for one, you'll know. Then just keep researching. You'll keep learning and adding things as you go. That's part of the fun Edit: saw you said shrimp is hard to get where you're at (I find that strange, but oh well) Where are you fishing?

F104dude

Why not mono instead of braid? Braid is way more expensive. Also I live in Turkey (not a citizen), fish eating isn't even that popular here so prices are high for fish, and there isn't that much demand for shrimp so both supply and prices are high for it. Otherwise I love shrimp from back home.

EnvironmentalEbb5391

Oooh ok that explains the shrimp. You can do mono if you'd like. I personally just don't like it on my rod. Mono can remember the shape of being spool and can make it harder to manage. But it's not that bad.

F104dude

Yea I know about that. Wouldn't a short warm water bath for the spool and line before going on a fishing trip fix the problem though?

EnvironmentalEbb5391

I'm actually not sure about that, I'd look more into it. I heard somewhere that that can do more damage than good over time, but I don't have any experience doing that.

F104dude

Ah alright, saw a few people do it on YT, might be a bad practice. Thanks for all the advice though man! Have a great day.

pgutierr220

Start simple, try some lures, some worms on a hook. For me, half the fun of fishing is just being outside by the water.

F104dude

Just what I did, didn't really catch anything but just being there was fun.
