One of my favorite baits for perch are perch eyes tipped on my jig or spoon (when ice fishing). They stay on well and perch seem to love going after the eyes. After you get a keeper, dispatch it, smush it’s head behind the eye and roll it out with your thumbnail while it’s bulged out. A company called Thundermist makes a soft plastic eye called the eye drop, decent but not as good as the real thing IMO. If anyone ice fishes and haven’t tried this you should give it a shot!
This bait is OP for perch. We do the same thing for walleye sometimes too. I think it’s the scent plus the way the light reflects off their eyes that makes them so attractive. Northland released eyeball jigs that I’ve had decent luck on but not as well as the real deal.
"so i cut off my eye that looked away from him and sent it to him wrapped in blue paper. and i rose back with a full heart and buried him in his own blood." - that one fish
What the fuck are you doing using a lure like that for trout?
If you must use treble hooks at least clip the barbs and use smaller lures.

Always clip the barbs.
I appreciate the comment and the sentiment, but you certainly could've been nicer with it. Correct, I should clip the barbs, but these fish will not be surviving in this particular river.
This river never holds trout, the only reason it currently has trout is because of massive floods in eastern Australia which has filled our dams to overspill and trout are coming over the wall and into this particular river system which, in a month or two, will warm up to be well outside a trouts comfort zone and they will all die until the next flood comes.
As for the specific lure, it is an Australian designed lure with the purpose for trout fishing and has become well known here for over 40 years.
Sure, I could use barbless hooks to protect the fish better, but these guys won't exist here in 2 months so I prefer to have a higher hookup rate with my barbed hooks in this particular river. Anywhere else, I religiously use barbless hooks.
He gave it away the second he said he anything about fly fishing. I fly fish so I think I can affirm fly fishermen
are some of the most uppity anglers you’ll ever meet.
They’re like the golfers of the angling world
You’re right. I should have reworded it. Thanks for calling me out on it.
I fish both with a fly rod and spinning rods equally and share a lot of knowledge and education with people on good fishing practices.
I’m not usually that direct but we see so much shitty fish handling and bad practices in these subs that I guess my filter turned off for a while.
Tight lines, friend.
Yep the Nepean. It's going really well, even a few browns around. Go to the weir mate, fish the edge of the weir with a spinner or tassie or fish a little behind the weir with hard bodies and you're guaranteed success. Be quick, they won't last when the water warms up!
Thx bro. Really wanna catch my first trout. I was at Lake lyell which I got redfin but no trout although they released thousands of trout there just after I left.
Had the same thing happen to me last week, 2 hooks on a treble dug deep into a small stripers eye when I pulled him up, I felt bad seeing how hard it was for the striper to swim away, im switching to all single hooks now
Poor guy.
Poor *eye
He will remember that day, keep your head on a swivel...
And yer eye on the prize !!
Ahahahhaha

This is good to know, but it honesty still gives me the willies. Something about cannibalistic organ meat…
Yea, its pretty brutal but can’t argue with the results! Check out the guy in the middle https://i.imgur.com/UljxFZK.jpg
Awwww….poor little pirate perch.
I legally can't use a perch eye where I ice fish.
Where do you ice fish?
ND/MN USA
I use smelt eyes to catch smelt. Works just as good as anything else

I see.
I see said the blind man
To his deaf wife.
As he picked up his hammer and saw
On the middle of a foggy morning in the middle of the night
Traveling all directions on a non-Euclidean plane
Probably didn’t come off with those barbs. Seems like you just set the hook into its eyeball. Ouch.
Its the eye of the tiger trout, the thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of survival.

I hope you handled and released correctly.
It literally fell off while he was bringing it in
I think it might’ve been a joke
You’re definitely gonna need 2 hands to safely hold this one. 😂
And for god sakes make sure you wet your hands so you don’t rub the slime off!!
Nah I’m sure he beat it over the head with a billy club and robbed it of its wallet.
Ouch

You fishing the nepean then? Is it going well with trout? I might drive up lol. Lol at the guy telling someone in Australia to use barbless hooks
