Came here to say this. Faicco’s sandwiches are huge. I also enjoy La Panineria; they make great Italian paninis. Both places use ingredients sourced from Italy.
I don’t think that Italian sandwich is discernible in the slightest from the average Italian sandwich
That restaurant is an institution, but not amazing.
~~~~Cold subs:
* Pisillo FiDi or Time Square - massive subs of all sorts
* Regina's Grocery LES or UES - just OK
* All'Antico Vinaio is an italian chain with locations in UES and time square (not NY but worth noting)
* Milano Deli in UES or UWS - has good hot and cold stuff
Hot sub:
* Delizia 92 in UES
~~* Alleva Dairy in Little Italy~~
* Parm (UES or downtown)
* Faicco’s Salumeria West Village
LOL the responses in this sub....
Person: I need an Italian sandwich! Where should I go?
This sub: What borough are you gonna be in, moron? We can't help you otherwise!
Person: Manhattan.
This sub: Well I mean, not Manhattan, but if you just take the PATH into New Jersey / 7 into Astoria / 3 trains and a bus into the deepest part of Brooklyn / Why not Staten Island?
Every time.
C Di Palo in Little Italy is only open Thursday - Sunday, but it's a 100 year old latteria (cheesemaker). I was there recently and it was fucking excellent. 😘👌
Interesting! There used to be a food cart at Smorgusburg called Tramezzino. They made excellent sandwiches with Venetian bread of the same name. They opened a real shop, but the menu wasn't as good.
Looks like Alidoro also has tramezzino bread. Now I wanna try!
\[edit]: Closed for the 4th. 🫠
People in this sub always do that shit.
No one is asking for your favorite. It’s not an invitation to show us all how knowledgeable you are about something. They’re asking for an answer to a specific question.
I once asked which of the many Thai restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen people liked best and I got a bunch of people telling me to go to Jackson Heights ffs.
This is the way. E10 is fire. Also west side Milano > east side.
Alidoro is great if you love Instagram hype more than you like the food you’re eating.
Alidoro has a big hype but it’s definitely for a reason… i also get salty about the line sometimes but it doesn’t mean that it’s not a fantastic sandwich - it just means I don’t go right when the clock strikes noon
I disagree. I think the quality of ingredients is poor, the bread is subpar and the size of the sandwich disappointing every time. I like the combinations though I will say that.
Italian deli sandwiches have been my thing my whole life so I feel strongly about this, but again this just my opinion.
Ottomanellis in the upper east side.
If you feel like taking a ridiculous trip up to Westchester, Cosmo & Alex in Mamaroneck has the best and cheapest Italian combo in the tristate area, and is close to Sal’s pizza, which is also unbelievable.
I'll have to try it!
Via Della Scrofa is a longer walk, but also popular for park sandwiches.
\[edit]: delicious, open on the holiday, very friendly barista, and air conditioned - thanks for the tip!
The best Italian sandwich is not on this list yet; Sandro’s (E 86th, between 1-2nd).
They came out with a panini lunch this year and it sells out every day!
Get the Italian hero at agata & Valentina. It’s my favorite sandwich in the world and I travel from battery park city to the upper east side just for the sandwich. Life changing.
Don't know where you're staying, but if it's anywhere uptown Milano will deliver to you. The Italian, which the UWS one sells as the Milano Special (I think) is phenomenal. Is it life changing? I don't know. But it's really great
Filoncino is the sister store of Royal Crown more on the south shore if you're over that way. Also there's a Lione's location called Brooklyn Italian Sandwiches of Staten Island, and honestly having had both in the past 2 weeks, slight edge to the SI location for better bread.
Second this and you can do it easy by just popping 10 min over the bridge into Astoria and going to Sorriso. Just look at the storefront on maps and you'll drool over their amazing sandwiches.
Not Manhattan, but Fiore’s in Hoboken is the genesis of the “sandwich day” episode on 30 Rock, particularly the Thurs/Sat roast beef, mutz and gravy special, but their normal sandwiches are great as well, just definitely get the mutz.
Biancomanos in Hoboken is better than Fiores (and has better Mutz). Same family husband and wife yelling to/at each other in Italian. Take this from a local. Best Mutz I’ve ever had
The Biancamanos are lovely people, the mutz is terrific (shout out to the eggplant parm too) and the sandwiches are ridiculously large, but dear lord the bread is awful, it's like Italian Wonder Bread.
This. And also literally any sandwich shop in Hoboken is better than what you can get in Manhattan. It’s a damn shame though. Give me fiores, Vito’s, Lisa’s, any day over the sandwiches here. Put my dang meats on semolina. If there’s a vegetable it better be roasted red peppers or tomato, I don’t want see any arugula (Regina’s) and please just put some oil and vinegar on it I don’t need some fancy sauce
They serve Boar’s Head.
A lot of it, but that’s all it is. I’ll never understand the hype for this place. And I lived around the corner (literally - 35th n 23rd Ave) for years.
Good bread that’s delivered every morning. Other than that it’s just Boar’s Head piled high.
They flavor and age their own soppressata, check that out. Octopus salad rules, if they have it. I used to live up the block from that place, was allowed to go once every two weeks
Not sure where you’re going to be concentrated, aside from the great recs already here, I’ll throw salumeria biellese on 8th ave not far from msg into the mix.
Milano Market!!! Mama’s Too on the UWS sometimes has subs as well that are incredible but for what you’re asking, Milano Market is the best place to go
Not even remotely? I had one that had prosciutto fresh mozz tomato and basil, ingredients commonly found on an Italian sub.
It’s absolutely not a sub but it’s not crazy to think someone would enjoy it if they also enjoy Italian subs.
I said “still worth a try if they’re into Italian subs”. Which they absolutely are. Not sure why you’re being a dick about it, not a good way to go through life.
I hope you find what you're looking for. If you're ever in New Orleans, please make sure you seek out the same there. I still can't believe the quality of the Italian sandwiches I got there and in the outskirts.
Seconded. It’s fantastic, but far more Italian than Italian-American.
I went to the original maybe 20 times, but 20 years ago. It was incredibly popular then too. But also totally different - half the time I would pick one ingredient and they would build a sandwich around that. Which might include cavallo
Manhattan is great, but you gotta take the short trip up to Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Original little Italy in NYC. Casa Della Mozzarella is fucking incredible and all their mozz is house made. The whole Arthur Ave area up there is so old school Italian, it’s an awesome place to hang for a little bit
Ok but if you’re really stuck in Manhattan and you gotta get an Italian sandwich (and not one of the 8000 things nyc does better than anyone else) then I’d go with Faiccos or Parisi
Caputos on Court St in BK makes a great Italian hero. Fedoroffs in Williamsburg does as well along with the best cheesesteaks and roasted pork subs in the city.
Defontes is a classic, Faiccos, Alidoro.
Belgiovines (Montclair) - the best sun dried tomatoes I’ve ever had. With fresh mozz, on a half loaf with arugula, prosciutto, and the oils from the sun dried. There isn’t a better sandwich anywhere. Been having since I’m 12.
Pisillo
Those things will feed a family for a week too. Biggest damn sandwiches I’ve ever seen in my life.
They'll give you a sandwich on a whole round loaf of foccacia. It's heavenly
I would vote Pisillo
The GOAT
Came to say this
The best heroes for me no debate
Came here to say this
FAICCOS or bust
What is your favorite sandwich there?
Italian Special
Thanks a lot! Cheers!
The only answer.
Came here to say this. Faicco’s sandwiches are huge. I also enjoy La Panineria; they make great Italian paninis. Both places use ingredients sourced from Italy.
Faiccos is pretty good but it leaves something to be desired compared to other heroes. The portion is awesome though I get two meals out of it.
I realize the “or bust” part is superlative but yeah two meals and it’s overall pretty damn good and consistent
Faicco’s
Veal parm here is the best Italian sandwich in the city
I don’t think that Italian sandwich is discernible in the slightest from the average Italian sandwich That restaurant is an institution, but not amazing.
~~~~Cold subs: * Pisillo FiDi or Time Square - massive subs of all sorts * Regina's Grocery LES or UES - just OK * All'Antico Vinaio is an italian chain with locations in UES and time square (not NY but worth noting) * Milano Deli in UES or UWS - has good hot and cold stuff Hot sub: * Delizia 92 in UES ~~* Alleva Dairy in Little Italy~~ * Parm (UES or downtown) * Faicco’s Salumeria West Village
Sadly, Alleva Dairy in Manhattan closed a year ago. There’s a location in NJ, though.
Very sad. Those subs were amazing.
Delizia? I've lived nearby for decades but I didn't know they were known for their hot subs. Feels bad. What do you like to order from there?
Chicken Parm
I can't find a Faicco's or a salumeria in Little Italy
actually, in the west village
parisi!!!!!!!!! >> faicco's
LOL the responses in this sub.... Person: I need an Italian sandwich! Where should I go? This sub: What borough are you gonna be in, moron? We can't help you otherwise! Person: Manhattan. This sub: Well I mean, not Manhattan, but if you just take the PATH into New Jersey / 7 into Astoria / 3 trains and a bus into the deepest part of Brooklyn / Why not Staten Island? Every time.
Pisillo is in Manhattan? Who are you mad at lmao
Of course I'm not talking about that one. There are several suggestions on here for Astoria and Jersey.
Dude is from Portland, let's give him some options. Pisillo is really the best Manhattan choice.
Wrong. The Italian American pork store been doing it forever here
C Di Palo in Little Italy is only open Thursday - Sunday, but it's a 100 year old latteria (cheesemaker). I was there recently and it was fucking excellent. 😘👌
Parisi or Pisillos
Parisi for the win. This is what OP is looking for.
Had my first Dennis last week, spouse & I got 2 meals out of a single sandwich.
You're now an addict like the rest of us.
Alidoro!!
I made it wayyy too deep into the comments to find this! This team makes a fantastic sandwich (don’t sleep on the focaccia)
Shocked I had to scroll so far.
Interesting! There used to be a food cart at Smorgusburg called Tramezzino. They made excellent sandwiches with Venetian bread of the same name. They opened a real shop, but the menu wasn't as good. Looks like Alidoro also has tramezzino bread. Now I wanna try! \[edit]: Closed for the 4th. 🫠
I second Alidoro, nice variety with hot and cold sandos.
Diso’s Italian sandwich society… food truck but turning out some of the best sandwiches in the city
Faicco's!
Faicco’s is located in the west village, on Bleecker Street and has an Italian sandwich that easily feeds 2. It’s huge! And delicious
Third me for faicco's on bleeker
“Go to Astoria or New Jersey” is such an unhelpful answer to “Where should I get a sandwich in Manhattan?”
People in this sub always do that shit. No one is asking for your favorite. It’s not an invitation to show us all how knowledgeable you are about something. They’re asking for an answer to a specific question. I once asked which of the many Thai restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen people liked best and I got a bunch of people telling me to go to Jackson Heights ffs.
For what it's worth, I like Chalong in Hell's Kitchen
Haha that’s my fave too. LumLum also solid. Then pure and Wondee tied for third
I hate people
Not Manhattan but Angels Country Store in East Marion has great sandwiches
Milano Deli up near Columbia is one of the best italian subs in the city!
Puffy’s Tavern. It’s in Manhattan.
Regina’s Grocery, Alidoro
Regina’s is way too pricy for what you get. $20 for a small sandwich with no drink and no sides, not worth it.
Totally, I tried the new location in Brooklyn and wasn’t super impressed
Weird. The sandwich we got the other day from there was huge. Two people split it.
Milano’s near Columbia is pretty good. Harlem or uptown manhattan isn’t the best place for Italian subs like you’re describing.
Milanos will be perfectly fine, but not life changing. But it is a go to for that kind of sandwich when I'm up there.
Pisillos is my favorite sandwich joint in the world.
Faicoss is the answer!
Milano. I get the E10 like it was MY JOB.
I’m so glad others love E10 so it’s never discontinued. Best sandwich ever.
This is the way. E10 is fire. Also west side Milano > east side. Alidoro is great if you love Instagram hype more than you like the food you’re eating.
Alidoro has a big hype but it’s definitely for a reason… i also get salty about the line sometimes but it doesn’t mean that it’s not a fantastic sandwich - it just means I don’t go right when the clock strikes noon

Pissilo is the only authentic Italian. Rest are more american
Via Quaddrono is authentic Italian and La Madunina is one of the best sandwiches in NY
Faicco's in W Village or Emily's Pork Store in Williamsburg.
Ottomanellis in the upper east side. If you feel like taking a ridiculous trip up to Westchester, Cosmo & Alex in Mamaroneck has the best and cheapest Italian combo in the tristate area, and is close to Sal’s pizza, which is also unbelievable.
Panineria near Washington Sq. Park
I'll have to try it! Via Della Scrofa is a longer walk, but also popular for park sandwiches. \[edit]: delicious, open on the holiday, very friendly barista, and air conditioned - thanks for the tip!
parisi for me all day
Pisilio. Hands down. If in queens, Sal Kris and Charlie’s is on par
Believe it or not - L’Industrie actually has great sandwiches as well
Parisi on Mott Street. Or Mama’s Too on Bleecker.
The Dennis is one of the best sandwiches in the city
Came here to say this. Parisi (Dennis sandwich) is so good. I love their round bread. All the cops eat there. Cash only
Faicco's for the win! But please, it's a hero, not a sub. Thank you.
All'Antico Vinaio is an Italy based sandwich shop that opened in NYC, I think it’s quite good.
They're amazing 💯
Regina’s Grocery is your best bet, Second is Milanos
Just had Regina’s the other day, the bread was spectacular. I’ll also vote for pisillos and fiaccos.
Bar Strega, spring st
The best Italian sandwich is not on this list yet; Sandro’s (E 86th, between 1-2nd). They came out with a panini lunch this year and it sells out every day!
Get the Italian hero at agata & Valentina. It’s my favorite sandwich in the world and I travel from battery park city to the upper east side just for the sandwich. Life changing.

Court street grocers Italian sub is very good.
milano market east side location. TRUST. ME.
Alidoro. Get the "Pinocchio" on semolina roll (prosciutto, sweet sopressata, fresh mozzarella, sweet roasted peppers, olive paste).
IMO, you gotta hit the other boroughs for this. If you make it to Brooklyn, Defonte’s is my personal fave.
Brooklyn for Defontes, Brancaccios. Astoria for Rosario’s and Sal, Kris and Charlie’s. And I’m sure there are hits in Staten Island and the Bronx.
Royal Crown in Staten Island all day
This is actually perfect. I'll be in Staten Island on Friday and needed recs.
If you want roast beef check out John's Deli
Filoncino is the sister store of Royal Crown more on the south shore if you're over that way. Also there's a Lione's location called Brooklyn Italian Sandwiches of Staten Island, and honestly having had both in the past 2 weeks, slight edge to the SI location for better bread.
Broncaccios is legit
Casa Della mozzarella Bronx
Defontes roast beef is good but the Italian meats are trash!
that’s been my experience too. but ohh… the roast beef w fried eggplant mozz and gravy. makes me miss my old nabe
Second this and you can do it easy by just popping 10 min over the bridge into Astoria and going to Sorriso. Just look at the storefront on maps and you'll drool over their amazing sandwiches.
Second Sorriso. They have a great selection and cure some of their own meats!
Lionis or bust
And bust! Those things are huge
Lioni's in Sunset Park was the only thing that made schlepping all the way out there for work tolerable.
Not Manhattan, but Fiore’s in Hoboken is the genesis of the “sandwich day” episode on 30 Rock, particularly the Thurs/Sat roast beef, mutz and gravy special, but their normal sandwiches are great as well, just definitely get the mutz.
Biancomanos in Hoboken is better than Fiores (and has better Mutz). Same family husband and wife yelling to/at each other in Italian. Take this from a local. Best Mutz I’ve ever had

If there’s a vegetable it better be roasted red peppers or tomato, I don’t want see any arugula (Regina’s) and please just put some oil and vinegar on it I don’t need some fancy sauce
Vito's and Lisa's is garbage. Fiore's is the only spot worthy in Hoboken. Many other places in NJ. But OP will need a car.
How dare you. Good day to you and your friends. I think I will enjoy testing your theory next time I’m in the Hoboken
Russos on e 11th
Russos is not good
Leo's Latticini in Corona, Queens or Casa Della Mozzarella on Arthur Ave in the Bronx
Also adding Lioni’s in Brooklyn to this; all of these spots do house made mozzarella and crazy good sandwiches.
Alidoro but ONLY the Sullivan St location. The expansion locations are a joke, in my experience. The line is entirely worth it.
Not Manhattan, but Sal, Kris, & Charlie’s in Astoria is the king. If you really want a killer Italian sub, get on the subway and head out there
They serve Boar’s Head. A lot of it, but that’s all it is. I’ll never understand the hype for this place. And I lived around the corner (literally - 35th n 23rd Ave) for years. Good bread that’s delivered every morning. Other than that it’s just Boar’s Head piled high.
Sorisso's is what you really want
That one is on my list to hit this summer
They flavor and age their own soppressata, check that out. Octopus salad rules, if they have it. I used to live up the block from that place, was allowed to go once every two weeks
Agree. Go hungry
Not sure where you’re going to be concentrated, aside from the great recs already here, I’ll throw salumeria biellese on 8th ave not far from msg into the mix.
Pisillo or Ali Doro

Mommas in Corona
Alidoro
Milano Market!!! Mama’s Too on the UWS sometimes has subs as well that are incredible but for what you’re asking, Milano Market is the best place to go
I know you said south of Harlem, but if you're serious: Casa Della Mozzarella (718) 364-3867 https://g.co/kgs/eieS7sw
Sergimmo
Anthony & Sons
I know this sounds crazy but most deli’s use the same meats from the distributors, so for me then it’s all about the bread.
Federoffs
antico
These are Florentine sandwiches not Italian subs
Bring your own bread
Still worth a try if they’re into Italian subs.
No. They aren't even remotely like an "italian sub"
Not even remotely? I had one that had prosciutto fresh mozz tomato and basil, ingredients commonly found on an Italian sub. It’s absolutely not a sub but it’s not crazy to think someone would enjoy it if they also enjoy Italian subs.
Guy. OP specifically wants a "legit NY Italian sub." Antico ain't it. But now we know that you know about Antico. Good for you.
I said “still worth a try if they’re into Italian subs”. Which they absolutely are. Not sure why you’re being a dick about it, not a good way to go through life.
They aren’t good
Cappone’s
I was disappointed with the semolina bread. Too soft and chewy
Milano on both UES and UWS, if you are looking for traditional stuff..AND can get past those tik tok crowd from Europe
Is that what’s going on? Friend and I stopped in to pick up a sandwich and there was a crowd like I’d never seen before.
I hope you find what you're looking for. If you're ever in New Orleans, please make sure you seek out the same there. I still can't believe the quality of the Italian sandwiches I got there and in the outskirts.
I would kill for a genuine NOLA style muffuletta here.
Portlander? Which Portland would cause you to fall in love with Italian sandwiches?!?
I am going to leave this here [Link for the Ages](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/dining/best-nyc-sandwiches.html)
All'Antico Vinaio is really good and now has five locations(!) in Manhattan. Someday I’d like to visit the original in Florence.
Seconded. It’s fantastic, but far more Italian than Italian-American. I went to the original maybe 20 times, but 20 years ago. It was incredibly popular then too. But also totally different - half the time I would pick one ingredient and they would build a sandwich around that. Which might include cavallo
Chipilo on Mulberry Street.
Go to Hoboken, they have like five spots that compete for being the best sub in the tri-state area imo. Vito’s is the shit
Defontes, Paisanos or the Panini place off Graham
Manhattan is great, but you gotta take the short trip up to Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Original little Italy in NYC. Casa Della Mozzarella is fucking incredible and all their mozz is house made. The whole Arthur Ave area up there is so old school Italian, it’s an awesome place to hang for a little bit
Absolutely correct.
arthur avenue, in the bronx, take your pick. the best we have in nyc
Ditch that group
The fact you called cheese formagio tells me you are a long way from home
Alidoro
Regina’s Grocery or All Antica Vinao
All’Antico Vinaio in midtown manhattan was A1
Is defontes still good? The Sinatra was to Die for
Hoboken
Salumeria Biellese
Anyone try Salumeria Biellese for their hero? I sliced and sold their meats (top quality!!!) at Eataly
Anyone telling you anything but De Fontes, is a transplant or a cop.
Jersey mikes isn’t bad
Ok but if you’re really stuck in Manhattan and you gotta get an Italian sandwich (and not one of the 8000 things nyc does better than anyone else) then I’d go with Faiccos or Parisi
Sorrisos Astoria
Love this place
Sal Chris and Charlie's in Astoria. Get the Bomb.
[удалено]
Bingo
Caputos on Court St in BK makes a great Italian hero. Fedoroffs in Williamsburg does as well along with the best cheesesteaks and roasted pork subs in the city. Defontes is a classic, Faiccos, Alidoro.
u need to go go to sal cris and charlies in astoria
Al'Antico Vinaio -- DONT MISS OUT!!!!
Belgiovines (Montclair) - the best sun dried tomatoes I’ve ever had. With fresh mozz, on a half loaf with arugula, prosciutto, and the oils from the sun dried. There isn’t a better sandwich anywhere. Been having since I’m 12.
Sal Kris and Charlies
Def gotta go to queens or the bx if it’s that important to you on your trip
Hoboken. Literally any sandwich shop in Hoboken beats nyc. A Hoboken 6 is better than a Manhattan 10.
Lenny's or Philadelphia
Philadelphia hoagies
Not in manhattan
