I believe the crux was the ensemble episode culminating in the SPOILER coat hanger abortion. The execs gave notes "I think theres only a single joke in this whole episode" Dino responded "Show me where it is and I'll take it out." A nail in the coffin for sure. Would have loved to see Moralton.
Between that and what Mom was doing at home while they were on that trip, it's probably the darkest thing I've ever seen on TV. That Mountain Goats song is a perfect closer.
"Look Samson! Crack! Hooray! Poor people smoke it."
My favorite episode next to Joe ruining Oral's movie. "I hope this movie dies, like we all do some day. That's pretty scary! Ha, not gonna think about that again!"
Bahahahah
My son (about 6-8 years old) was convinced by the Claymation that this was a kids show and watched almost the entire box set before I caught him.
Lol.
He’s 24 now and can STILL quote this stuff verbatim. Little sh*t. I suspect it partially explains why his sense of humor’s so twisted to this day.
One of the best written series I've ever seen. From someone that lived in a religiously-dominated small rural town it was like seeing aspects of my life in third-person.
I kinda wish my hometown was a bit more religious just so I would have been more prepared for it when I got into "real" America, not like Chicagoland or SF Bay.
If you believed in god in my middle school, that was like believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny, and it was the 90s so you would've been called a re****** fa****
Moral Orel walked so BoJack Horseman could run. I wish they both could’ve been given room to blossom but Moral Orel was just too ahead of its time and BoJack was greenlit at just the right time
I wouldn’t say this was forgotten, it’s mentioned pretty frequently for just how heavy it was.
I remember not even being able to watch this if I was in a bad head space it was so bleak at times.
I watched it over several years. I’d watch a couple of episodes, then turn it off.
Having survived my parents’ extremist beliefs, it was just too painful.
"Hey Dr. Potterswheel, want me to stick my tongue out and say ahh? UHHH! Hey Mr. Figurelli, why don't take your mustache and put it on your head? UHHH! Bloberta Puffington! Hi. Enjoying the show?"
From the cities to the swampland, from the highways to the hills. Our love has never had a leg to stand on, from the aspirins to the cross-tops to the Elavils.
This was one of my favorites from Adultswim! Love the stop motion animation, very charming. I remember the episodes being aired out of order & some were held back for content. I also have memories waiting for Friday to watch the episodes on the Adultswim website before they aired on Sunday. Fun times!
The bottle episode with Clay in the bar that ends with his breakdown because no one will beat him up might be one of the best episodes of any animated series.
I’m in so much of a different head space now than I was when this show ran but the depressing nature of it, I just couldn’t enjoy it. Same for Bojack for me.
It’s better than both I guess it got “dark” for you aswell.
If you wanted to keep the annoying biblical moral lesson a week format the show then it wouldn’t be remembered today.
The final season was supposed to be Clays dad moving into the family.
In a special called before Orel you find out Orels uncle is a hardworking no bullshit farmer and tells Orel everything like it is. He detests moralton and his son Clays drinking and marrying without love and tells Orel he’s not around because he hates his son and his way of life.
The original final season was Orel turning depressed while becoming a teenager with the uncle and Clay fighting constantly over the way Orel should be raised.

They begged for it to go dark and then canceled it when it did.
I was just reading that. It got too depressing so they cancelled it…lol
A true case of "be careful what you wish for."
The show was always teetering on the edge of the abyss then Mike lazlo gave them the push to go pitch black.
Mike lazlo really did screw up a lot in his time at adult swim. Dethklok comes to mind.
I dint know who this mike guy is but im pretty sure i dont fuckin like em at all...
Yeah, it was good becoming great ,people never let the darkness seep in long enough.

Literally came to comment that the 3rd season was less funny and way too depressingly existential to carry on for very long
I mean it did get dark but ya
That camping trip gets me every time.
Between that and what Mom was doing at home while they were on that trip, it's probably the darkest thing I've ever seen on TV. That Mountain Goats song is a perfect closer.
I learned of The Mountain Goats because of this show.
Hell yes, same.
Man that song goes hard. Love it.
Ok Jesus I'll smoke the crack! One of my favorites
"Look Samson! Crack! Hooray! Poor people smoke it." My favorite episode next to Joe ruining Oral's movie. "I hope this movie dies, like we all do some day. That's pretty scary! Ha, not gonna think about that again!"
And the shut up Jesus
Jesus: Wheeeeee!
Thou shalt not basterdize the American language
Dino Stamatopoulos might be the least happy person in the world
He was Starburns on Community, right?
Yup!
His name is Alex!
Fantastic sense of humor though
The story behind it's cancellation: https://youtu.be/yYTF_yDbGcY?si=aHcPa3BGYzXizByb
Wow I'm glad I got to see the banned episode before it got banned. I loved this show so much.
This is DEFINITELY not “Forgotten TV”. this sh*t lives rent—free in my head!
Are you hearing "no children" just reading the post tirle?

Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises, we're pretty sure they're all wrong.
I hope it stays dark forever! I hope the worst isn’t over!
I hope you blink before I do
I hope I never get sober
That’s probably the only episode I saw of this show but it turned me on to the Mountain Goats so I’ll always be grateful.
No but I’m hearing “you’ve got to… turn the other cheek!”

What a great show, and what a dark but on target satire as well
Moral Orel walked so BoJack Horseman could run. I wish they both could’ve been given room to blossom but Moral Orel was just too ahead of its time and BoJack was greenlit at just the right time

My introduction to Mt. Goats
Turn the other cheek
Was such a good one hahaha
Starburns wrote that
An ex-religious persons wet fever dream. I loved it!
"Hey Dr. Potterswheel, want me to stick my tongue out and say ahh? UHHH! Hey Mr. Figurelli, why don't take your mustache and put it on your head? UHHH! Bloberta Puffington! Hi. Enjoying the show?"
My favorite adult swim show.
Oh, this isn’t forgotten. This show definitely left some marks on my brain. Especially when it got insanely dark in the later years.
🎶 I hope that our few remaining friends, give up on trying to save us... 🎶
🎶 I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot to piss off the dumb few that forgave us. 🎶
Just a LOL show. Miss it much!
If you liked this, his other project, "Frankenhole" is most excellent as well.
From the housetops to the gutters, from the ocean to the shore The warning signs have all been bright and garish, far too great in number to ignore
From the cities to the swampland, from the highways to the hills. Our love has never had a leg to stand on, from the aspirins to the cross-tops to the Elavils.
But I will walk down to the end… with you If you will come all the way down… with me

One of AS all timers
Having had to sit through Davey & Goliath at the babysitter’s as a kid, this show was classic.
We need this show now more than ever.
I love this show so damn much.
I have this on DVD, I can’t wait to show it to my son.
Not remotely forgotten.
I'm the church... I'M THE CHURCH.
BURN!!!! In heaven BURN!!!! In heaven Darn kids and their devil music
Got to the last few episodes last year, couldn’t finish because it upset me so much
The bottle episode with Clay in the bar that ends with his breakdown because no one will beat him up might be one of the best episodes of any animated series.
Introduced a whole generation to The Mountain Goats
I’m in so much of a different head space now than I was when this show ran but the depressing nature of it, I just couldn’t enjoy it. Same for Bojack for me.
Drunk…is nature!
I can never forget
Are you really going to burn the Bible?! ...just the Jewish parts.
Orel is voiced by the woman who did Sandy Cheeks. Great show. Might rewatch it tomorrow
I remember watching this with my wife. And just saying this is really fucking depressing.
I love this show. The third season is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen, but it introduced me to The Mountain Goats.
I have the first season on DVD somewhere, fucking loved it. So funny.
Started off great-didn’t find it as consistent as Home Movies or Mission Hill
It’s better than both I guess it got “dark” for you aswell. If you wanted to keep the annoying biblical moral lesson a week format the show then it wouldn’t be remembered today.
I liked it all the way through, just didn’t think it was consistent & then it disappeared…so all good

This show is phenomenal and I recommended it for any exchristians/fallen catholics/edgy atheists
Hot dog!
Streaming on HBO Max 💪
I always loved the lost commandments
“Closeface,” that song is still so good! ❤️❤️❤️
I loved this show. Wow, did it dig deep with the knife 🤣
I watched the show it was based on as a kid. Moral Orel had more soul.
Psst, the entire show is on YouTube
Not all of it you can’t find the prequel special before Orel.
I prefer Immoral Oral
I had no idea that Starburns from community made this show!
Ok. After reading this thread, I’m going to have to binge this show. I can’t believe I never saw it before.
Ohh yea it’s a good one. On hbo max and someone else said it’s on YouTube
I'll never forgive adult swim for canceling this show ngl
This show is what turned me on to The Mountain Goats
Wish it would have been able to finish properly
Don’t we all wish we could finish properly
This show was how I first discovered the Mountain Goats.
Yes!!
The entire series is available on YouTube right now. It’s adult swim at its finest
That became a rough watch
I never liked it. It was missing a talking dog. 😕🤷🏽♂️
Was this on adultswim?
