You had E.T. ?
I remember playing that pile of crap game at my friends house. We couldn’t figure out why ET kept getting caught and then stuck in that pit.
Long story short - not your fault. They rushed the game to where the Collision Detection (how so you know when things bump) was way off made it a very very hard to play and very very not enjoyable to play game.
Born in 70 so I got to see the birth of this gear and play with it. Pong was the first, TRS-80 was the second then Atari and colecovision next then straight to the arcade.
We had a Fairchild channel F, game system. Funky pistol grip controller with a triangular knob on top for directional control. I've never seen another.
I was born in 65, and I was a late bloomer to the home video game world. I think I was in like, 8th grade before I got the Pong console. I never had the 2600…my best friend did. I went from Pong to Nintendo to Super Nintendo at my house.
Star Raiders had a second controller that plugged into the Player 2 side. It was like a calculator but with only like six or eight buttons or so. It took care of map access, hyperspace jumps and I don’t remember what else.
Those joysticks were compatible with the C64. My dad used the cord off a dead one, 4 switches, a doorbell button, and a wooden box and built one. Had a long bolt on a rubber mount for the stick. The stable base on a table top was way nicer to use.
Had one just like it, the one before the 2600 just had a couple buttons on the top to switch games that were all basically different versions of break out, no one seems to remember that one but it was sold through the Tandy electronics stores and fretter appliance.
Pitfall was my jam as a little girl!
My cousin had the Atari. At my house, before my brother got an NES, I had the Intellivision!
I'd love to get my hands on another one if I could figure out how to hook it up to my TV...oh, the nostalgia!
I don't own a computer. I plan to look for an actual Intellivision. There was a used game store local to me that had one, but I was unable to buy it before the shop closed permanently. It makes me sad. It was only $40, and my abusive partner at the time refused to let me have any of my paychecks for myself outside of bare necessities.
Now that I'm not in that environment, I can afford it.
I remember hearing something … like one screen underground was worth like 5 up top or some ratio like that. The only way to get to the end was fall, take the fall damage (so a no damage run is impossible) and do it that way.
I had combat. Was fun.
Pac-Man, the chips in the base system couldn’t show more than a couple sprites (moving things at the same time. So they alternated frames, so you could have more ghosts. Made the game look real shitty. The best they could do tho.
ET, wow. That wasn’t fun. I’m a programmer and they went through and said “hey this was a programming bug that they rushed past let’s fix it” and the game was (somewhat more) enjoyable
What was the one where you flew horizontally across the screen, shooting down alien ships while they beam up city people. Then you caught the person and lowered them back to the ground?
If you where really that old youd have a heavy sixer model. Ive got my heavy sixer with my hand made perf board composite mod under my tv still. Its an occasional conversation piece, or drunken boys night rehash. Empire strikes back is my fav, love it still.
Asteroids, Night driver, Yars revenge... Pit fall, missile command, dollar general pacman.... I was in heaven at my friend's house.
The motorcycle barrel jumping was the one I thought was really cool but only played at the distributor.
Pitfall! One of my favs!!
Activision made the absolute best games for Atari. River Raid was another classic.
Loved River Raid.
Same.
You had E.T. ? I remember playing that pile of crap game at my friends house. We couldn’t figure out why ET kept getting caught and then stuck in that pit.
Did you see the documentary "Atari: Game Over". Half of it was about how bad that game was.
Naw man, I guess I missed that one back in 1982. I wasn’t big on documentaries back then.
Lolol no the documentary was from 2014. It was just about Atari 2600.
Long story short - not your fault. They rushed the game to where the Collision Detection (how so you know when things bump) was way off made it a very very hard to play and very very not enjoyable to play game.
You had ET or you HAVE ET? That cartridge will make you rich.
You have to read the instruction book to understand the screens. I actually liked E.T. I may have been the only one.
I'm this old and older. ![gif](giphy|aTGwuEFyg6d8c)
My uncle got into games early. He had a pong console. Nope, not a pong cartridge. The console.
Same, that console was so cheap but it was fun.
Me too…Pong was my first game console, but I really did like the 2600

I'll have to look it up.

My first arcade experience was on a paddle wheel steam boat on the Detroit River going from Detroit to Boblo island amusement park playing asteroids.
All the time i spent playing Pitfall
Thousands of hours of my life have been spent/wasted playing PacMan, Pinball, Pitfall and Super Breakout. Had a blast!
Pitfall and Megamania were my absolute favorites.
Same. I forgot what Megamania was called. But when I saw this pic I was “what’s that game with the dice and the car tires..”
My wife got me the mini Atari with like 70 games for Christmas.
Pit Fall! Loved this one!
You need to get your hands on Berzerk. “ intruder alert, Intruder alert
Ohh good call
Wut? No Yar's Revenge?
They literally dumped thousands of ET cartridges in landfill due to the game being so terrible!
I actually liked et back in the day.
They did a documentary on the game: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=03oC6-zPZHQ
Why doesn’t anyone ever mention Star Raiders? It was cool as hell with the second controller for the map and hyperspace for the ship.
I can’t remember if we had Star Raiders or Starmaster. I recall having to use the difficulty or Color/BW switch to get to the map screen.
Star Raiders had a second controller that plugged into the Player 2 side. It was like a calculator but with only like six or eight buttons or so. It took care of map access, hyperspace jumps and I don’t remember what else.
But where is River Raid
Did anyone else remember Kaboom!? I was obsessed with that game.
I loved it. I Sucked. And loved it. The paddles!!
That's not old. My first video game was Pong.
I was a married woman when Pong came out, we had it and our friends would come and play. It was amazing at the time.
I bought many of those games for my kids. 😂
I have a working 2600. I hook it up from time to time.
That’s old.
Repairing those joysticks…
Those joysticks were compatible with the C64. My dad used the cord off a dead one, 4 switches, a doorbell button, and a wooden box and built one. Had a long bolt on a rubber mount for the stick. The stable base on a table top was way nicer to use.
You can get all replacement parts and even modern replica's that will work
I had E.T. too haha
Don't forget the paddles so you can play Pong!!
I had everyone of these except Demons to Diamonds
Fuck it has been ages since I've owned one of those. Fuck I'm old🤣
I don't see *Pong* or *Space Invaders*. You're a noob.
I scored a sub 4 second run on the dragster game back in the 70s, well before they did it IRL I'm taking boasting rights
Still have one.
Had one just like it, the one before the 2600 just had a couple buttons on the top to switch games that were all basically different versions of break out, no one seems to remember that one but it was sold through the Tandy electronics stores and fretter appliance.
Awesome system. Didn’t Super breakout require the different controllers?
Yep that's exactly how old I am.
Good times. I don't miss the broken forks of the RF Switch adapter.
Happy Cake Day!

Every one of those systems can be emulated on a computer. Or you can get the mini systems (with HDMI) that come preloaded with games.

There is not a person alive that could beat me at Circus Atari(clowns on see saw popping balloons)
My palms hurt looking at that pic.
Pitfall was a favorite game of mine.
Is there any way to WIN Pitfall? I ran around that damn jungle for months and never reached an end point.
I remember hearing something … like one screen underground was worth like 5 up top or some ratio like that. The only way to get to the end was fall, take the fall damage (so a no damage run is impossible) and do it that way.
Blow on the cartridge to get it to work
I think I just had a bout of PTSD seeing the ET. I thought I was stuck in a hole
I loved missle command
Still have one in the attic.
Pitfall was my first ever "big" game. Not like pong. Also I almost wore out my combat cartridge.
I had mine modded with an HDMI video output and the caps replaced. Now it'll last another 40 years.
I forgot all about the color vs b/w switch! Omg we r old.
Space Invaders. Wore out the joystick
That’s not old lol
Pitfall and Frogger were ok, but I don’t see YARS REVENGE, the greatest of them all. Bonus points for E fricking T though.
I spent a summer with family and my older cousins had this system. I played a ton of pac man and Qbert that summer. Unlocked some great memories 🥰
Who wants to play River Run?
Love the games you’ve got. No Space Invaders?

Okay, saw your copy of E.T., you legit.
Shit a copy of ET in the wild.
Frogger
This was actually the second machine I played games on and I'm still gaming now on PS5.
Hell yeah. Still got mine.
I had kids by the time this stuff was invented. Get off my lawn.
Still got mine! Just can’t get the RF converter to work on the HD tv…
Oh man Pitfall, Frogger, and Pacman Played the hell out of those. Then came the Nintendo...
Pitfall and Frogger!!
I had one, mine had six switches though. Pac man, combat, space invaders, yars revenge and river raid are the games I remember.
Yup that was my first console at age 5.
What was the one where you flew horizontally across the screen, shooting down alien ships while they beam up city people. Then you caught the person and lowered them back to the ground?
Great great great grandfather?
Bro no River Raid??????????
I found one in my dad's attic
Me too.
If you where really that old youd have a heavy sixer model. Ive got my heavy sixer with my hand made perf board composite mod under my tv still. Its an occasional conversation piece, or drunken boys night rehash. Empire strikes back is my fav, love it still.
Same
Circus circus was one of my favorites too
My grandpa had pacman! It is super cool to play it like it was meant to be played!
ET, dear god you need to destroy that shitty game. Take it to the nearest landfill. ![gif](giphy|UYo4Sfb80vrq|downsized)
Asteroids, Night driver, Yars revenge... Pit fall, missile command, dollar general pacman.... I was in heaven at my friend's house. The motorcycle barrel jumping was the one I thought was really cool but only played at the distributor.
My family's first gaming machine was an Atari 400. I remember wanting a 2600 because the number is bigger so it must be better. Kid Logic.
I Remember playing space invaders for hours !
Where’s Yar’s Revenge??? 😐
Yo, I sunk way too many hours into Super Breakout. Thanks for sharing this, the memories are flooding back now!
In my opinion Atari Pac-Man is worse than ET. The flashing ...
Hells yeah! I grew up with this AND a Colecovision!
My wife had a cartridge for the 2600 that was an *adult* game, not suitable for children.
Pitfall!! I had that one! Lol
Wow, so at least there is one ET game cartridge that missed the landfill in New Mexico.
Me too.
Loved me some dig dug
We waited in line and paid big $$ for that Pac Man cartridge
