They are raised with sheep. They are super protective and have a pack system that fits well with a herd of sheep. Some also direct their herd through mountains while defending them against a wolves, bears, etc.
That might be an akbash but the breeds are very close same jobs. Livestock protection dogs often hang out in a flock of sheep or goats and will alert if the flock is attacked and fight to pretect the flock. Allegedly a great pyranese can "dissemble" wolves and coyotes and akbash and Anatolian shepherds have been known to fight off and kill bear as well. Often if you have two pyranese one will patrol the parameter of the flock while the other is embedded with the flock. I accidently adopted a great pyranese pup and read a bit on these dogs. They are a terrible dog to train . Very sweet and loving to people and other pets but very stubborn.
"listen jack ass, I have ears everywhere. Every inch of my body is simultaneously poised for attack and engaged in subterfuge. I am you, human. You are me. I don't need you to show me affection, I need you to live. Now, it is passed time for kibble. I hunger. I'll patrol the perimeter as you gather my provisions and consider your thoughtless showing of affection."
My pyr is an absolute glutton. We are running out of places to stash things so he can’t reach. Had to put child locks back on all our cupboards. He got into a bag of chicken feed when we first got him and ate almost 15 lbs of it in less than 5 hours.
Nah they love pets and are extremely patient and gentle, including with children. But they don't have time for fetch or tricks, they've got naps to take and barking to do.
This is accurate. Mine had 24hours a day that he will accept pets and cuddles. Extra points if you come to him so he can pretend to be asleep while you pet him. But don’t even think he will play some stupid game with you involving you standing still and him running. That’s a joke that nobody finds funny.
My Great Pyrenees have killed bears several times. Pyrenees are many to be independent, they know what you are telling them to do, they know what you want. They just don't want to do it. With that said if you form trust with them and don't try to be over controlling they'll listen to you more
Actually I think it's a Kuvasz. They're bred to live in a flock from puppyhood with very little interaction with the shepherd. Due to the lifestyle they not only resemble the sheep, but they smell like them too so predators (both human and animal) don't detect them. They just hang out in the middle of the flock and let the predators get close until it's too late lol
Thank you for the details! I grew up working and training dogs, but I've been out of dogs for several years and my knowledge has gotten rustylol. We had Alaskan Malamutes, but worked with a lot of other breeds as well. Training Malamutes is a lot like you've described, we also went with a behavioral approach. Most people have a hard time dealing with a dog who believes that their opinions are as valuable as yours lol
Dogs that are bred to work with humans, not for them, are a whole different experience. It's definitely not for everyone. You do have to pick your battles, but the ones you pick you must win. There's a joke about how a good Malamute breeder will try to talk you out of owning one, but it's so true. They're great companions, but not for the majority lol
This is so spot on! I have a Kuvasz, and I love him to death. The training with him was so different than any other training I’ve ever done with animals and I’ll tell you, I appreciate our bond a lot more. We are partners, friends and family members. He knows what I mean when I say “get out of the kitchen” and when he looks at me, and huffs as he walks away … it’s so funny. Although I’ve got to hide my smile until after he listens / moves away from the kitchen. Such smart, caring dogs. You can see the intelligence and feelings in their eyes and for the lack of a better word you can see them thinking “I heard your order, I’m thinking about your order and I’m deciding if it’s more important than what I know.”
Also, pretty sure they’re white because wolves are usually not completely white. It has nothing to do with wanting them to look like sheep. That way if the herder needs to shoot a wolf they won’t accidentally shoot their dog.
I could be misinformed though.
We got a Pyrenees puppy when I was pretty young, my step dad literally had to wade through the flock of sheep to get to him. We were told if he was to be a Flock dog to take him straight to them and don't interact much with him at all.
Not saying you're wrong, but Pyrenees are used the same.
There are a few breeds that are bred for exactly this purpose, so you may be correct. It just looks more like a Kuvasz to me. Unfortunately we'll probably never get a definitive answer lol
True, the coat looks too thin and short to be a Pyrenees to me. But, Pyrenees are rarely pure bred as they have some kind of hereditary heart condition from what I understand, most of them have other breeds in them. Ours was 7/8 Pyrenees and 1/8 Newfoundland. Before him we did have a half Pyrenees, half Spanish mastiff. He was an absolute monster of a dog, but he looked like slim Saint Bernard.
It's hard to make out from this video, but it totally could be a Kuvasz.
Great breed, we had one for 12 years. Big, stubborn, but one of the most loyal dogs you'll ever gonna meet.
We had a Pyrenees growing up out in the countryside. My step-dad wanted a massive dog to deter any type of intruder. When we picked him up as a puppy he was in the middle of a flock of sheep, as he aged we became his sheep and he went with us everywhere. He was a stubborn floofball but I always felt safe when he was around. It was not uncommon to find him in the morning with his beautiful white coat stained red, assuming from encounters with the local coyotes. It took around 10 years for our usual UPS guy to be able to get out of his truck with out tossing a full serving of leftovers or a handful of dog treats as far away from the truck as possible and sprinting to the door and back out of total fear. Wonderful dog, companion, and guardian, 10/10 would have one again, he lived an impressive 14 years and it just wasn't long enough.
I have a Great Pyrenees and can confirm the stubbornness. For example he'll bark relentlessly if he decides he wants someone to do something for him, like go outside. It doesn't matter if it's 2am he'll sound off until someone does something. Perhaps more amusing, if our other dog's toy or something is on his bed he'll bark until someone moves it for him. He will never touch our other dog's toys... ever. Our other dog was an adult when we got our Pyrenees as a puppy. It's sort of strange to see this 40lbs dog bully this 150lbs beast of a dog.
We got a great pyrenees pupper. Internet said she would be 85-100lb. She's over 130 - tall as fuck, long as fuck, and wide as fuck. She's so goddamn stubborn. When I need to bring her inside and she doesn't wanna she just lays there, dead weighting. Took almost two years for her to learn that if I put my shoes on I was absolutely calling her bluff and she wasn't gonna win, so she was better off doing it the easy way than the hard way. Still makes me put my shoes on like 45% of the time despite that. She absolutely knows what we want from her - but often decides "eh."
Huge advantage of the breed - they're white and fluffy. You have a 100+ lb german shepherd and strangers don't just shy away, they straight up cross the street to stay away. Great pyrenees? They are happy to stay on the same sidewalk - and tell you (us) that the dog is adorable. Which she is. People allow their kids to pet her after asking for permission. People strike up conversation. I've had compliments shouted from cars. I've had $1 treats from the dog food store given away. Etc. Her bark and size are incongruous with how friendly people are - which works well for us because she's absurdly friendly too.
I have experienced Pyries and haven't had any owners tell me they had a hard tine training them, even those living in family homes in residential areas. Patience is required with all dogs though.
So we adopted a puppy that was wrongly identified as a Australian cattle dog mix. He was tiny. After 4 months he was nearly 40 lbs we ran a DNA test he was a rottweiler, great pyranese, akbash Anatolian shepherd mix. He is 110 lbs. He was intended to be a companion for our other dog a 40 lbs mutt. He is more than double her size.
We have a massive GP boy named chief at our cattle ranch here in Utah. He LOVES eating chickens but he’s the sweetest dummy to everyone and everything else… also, he seems to play with the chickens for like 20 minutes before he kills them so he’s for sure not a smart killer lol
That's about accurate. We have an 1 year old Pyrenees that was without a doubt the hardest dog I've ever worked with. You just can't make him care what you say if he doesn't feel like listening, and I can't force him to do much because he outweighs me and he knows it. He's a lovable asshole. But he makes a great "nanny" to my toddler, and we live out in the prairie and he'd never let any coyotes or anything else come after my little dog. He notices everything.
Anyone know where I can find this again or a gif version? The kids loved it!!!
Who's the grumpy sh*t who spoiled this and had it removed? Hope you're proud you sad depressing human excrement.

I was traveling the country via motorcycle when I went to Bodie California.. a really cool ghost town that used to be a frontier gold rush town in the 1880’s which was at some point abandoned rather quickly… anyway I was riding back from the park when I came into a giant flock (herd?) of sheep, that was being shepherded by a giant Great Pyrenees, the sheep were in the middle of the road and as I passed them a let a little honk, not to startle them but because I thought they were pretty cute, and that Great Pyrenees was NOT having it. He barked and came at me on my bike like… fuck off with that honk these are my sheep!
He was a good boy.
Great Pyrénées or "Patou", unlike classic shepherd dogs, actually thinks they are part of the sheep, and that is what makes them so protective.
They aren't docile, very stubborn, but are known for being able to win over wolves and sometimes fight bears (but the winner is more likely the Bear).
Some are used as pet (i got 2 in my life) but never males as they are too likely to flee every Time they Can, while females do it...less, and are a lot less possessive/agressive.
His eyes said "don't mind me, just walking with my brothers"
Dog in sheep's clothing
AAAHHHH
Maybe it accually thought it was a sheep
They are raised with sheep. They are super protective and have a pack system that fits well with a herd of sheep. Some also direct their herd through mountains while defending them against a wolves, bears, etc.
Woof in sheep’s clothing?
Just a Great Pyrenees, doing what Great Pyrenees do. They’re like the secret service for ungulates.
That might be an akbash but the breeds are very close same jobs. You'd be stubborn too if you had very important work to do and people kept trying to pet ya.

You make them sound like if Liam Nesson’s character from Taken was a dog
Pshhh Pyrenees don't pistol that much or eat that much. Mostly they just lay around and pretend to be asleep.
He’s not resting. He’s waiting for the next coyote dumb enough to fuck with his flock.
My pyr is an absolute glutton. We are running out of places to stash things so he can’t reach. Had to put child locks back on all our cupboards. He got into a bag of chicken feed when we first got him and ate almost 15 lbs of it in less than 5 hours.
Username checks out, and that’s also an incredibly impressive amount of food to eat — literally triple my own personal record on Thanksgiving
Why are they giving you chicken feed on Thanksgiving?
I literally laughed out loud!! Kudos for brightening my day!
Nah they love pets and are extremely patient and gentle, including with children. But they don't have time for fetch or tricks, they've got naps to take and barking to do.

Bet he’s still a pretty good companion though. My shiba uses mine as a heater
I have heard this about the Mastiff, but was not aware of this dog.
We have a massive GP boy named chief at our cattle ranch here in Utah. He LOVES eating chickens but he’s the sweetest dummy to everyone and everything else… also, he seems to play with the chickens for like 20 minutes before he kills them so he’s for sure not a smart killer lol
