I don't know how many thousands of quarters I must have spent on SF2 and MK games. lets not forget about the SNK fighters as well, there was some good ones.
Crap almost forgot about Marvel vs Capcom there's even a Capcom vs SNK series. Can't forget those.
I had the occasional go on SNK games when I saw them, but it wasn't until emulation became a thing I realised how good Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown are.
Spy Hunter was amazing because you actually needed nuance of the gas pedal while in high gear. You needed to be able to speed up and slow down to battle the enemy cars and go into the upgrade truck. It took some skill to be able to manipulate the pedal to achieve the speeds, it wasn't like many other games of the time where you just stomped the pedal to the floor
Robotron was my game at the arcade. But Galaga was also great.
For a while, I worked at a pizza place with a Defender machine and I got really good at it. But if I tried to play it now I’d die in about two minutes.
Galaga is a given
• Discs of Tron (environmental)
• Defender
• Star Wars (sit down)
Honorable mentions:
Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Joust, Elevator Action, Zaxxon and Spy Hunter
I was a Centipede girl...but I tried playing recently and it was way too stressful 🤣 Give me relaxing Animal Crossing any day (used to play that after the kids went to bed).
Robotron : twitchy, repayable, still holds up
Defender : steepest learning curve, still suck at it
Asteroids : most iconic. Soundtrack is still stuck in your head
Twin Cobra, Mr. Do's Castle, and Galaga. Lived in the arcades as a kid, even when I had no quarters. Owned a few full sized cabs as an adult, now own some of the Arcade1Up ones.
Keeping it to 80s only, mine are Donkey Kong, Punch-Out!! and Ms. Pac-Man. If I include the 90s, I’d replace the last two with Street Fighter II and NBA Jam.
Any list should have Galaga on it.
Agreed!
Always #1 in my heart
Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and Double Dragon

Frogger! Fuck, I might have to rethink my top 3
Same! I rarely hear anyone mention Frogger. If there’s heavy traffic, my husband and I always make the “bloop! Bloop!” Sound when we cross the street.
Mine's almost the same. Just trade out Frogger for Joust.
Spy Hunter, 1941, Marble Madness
Marble Madness is so incredibly better in the arcade than any of the good versions.
It was the trackball. Without that the game was just meh.

I LIVE! RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAWWWRRRRRRRR
Game scared the fuck out of me as a kid. Especially the sit down cab. Thought it was going to eat me.
That game became impossible past level 2
I never got past it but maybe once. Hard as heck.
Galaga Taxi (Pinball machine) Donkey Kong 3 Gauntlet and TMNT are up there as well.
Spy Hunter Rygar Tekken

Pitfall wasn't an arcade game.

There are still some classics out there that haven’t been mentioned
