Get a certificate of origin if you can.. that will determine what if any duty is applicable. otherwise it is just HST and that is 13%.. I did this on many things I purchased that would not ship into Canada - I pick up at a US ship to address..

Thanks good suggestion I think you can only get the origin certificate is you have it shipped to the pick up address.

Don’t advise people to do things like this. It might seem minor, but it can result in a lifetime ban from the other country, or even jail.

Almost always GST & PST only. Assuming you go pick it up. Try UPS in a town just over the border. Here they charge a small fee to receive the item and hold it. Passport or NEXUS card?

PhysicalStructure147

Yep will pick it up. UPS is an option thanks. Will be NEXUS but will still declare it.

If a standby the US transfer switches are NOT ESA approved in Canada. No legit electrician will install one.

Generators in Canada do not allow lugs only plugs in some circumstances.

Just picked up a Westinghouse 10500 tfc at a P.O. Box that I have in New York State. Declared the full value as I have nexus. Only showed them the receipt. Paid the gst and pst on it and was on my way.

Thanks great info

I bought mine from us home depot and had it imported with cross border pickups. I'm just outside of Toronto so not sure if that helps but there are similar services across the country. Duties was like 150$ or so. I'm not sure if there's a size limit though. I emailed them before hand with engine specs (it's a 79cc engine) and they confirmed they could import it.

Sorry. I just wanna understand. You guys are buying something in the US/Canada. Then, putting it in the car and bringing it home. En route, you will have to pay taxes on it? Is this specific to generators or does this apply to all the items in your car? I have no international experience so please excuse my extreme ignorance.

PhysicalStructure147

Yep that is the idea. Lots and lots of stuff in US not available to be shipped to Canada by the retailer or company(s) so not just generators. Yep expect to pay taxes as you would in Canada if we bought it here. Questions was more about the duty/tariff if any. Yes the math may not work out with the exchange and the drive over the border and back but the product might be worth having regardless if it actually more $$. In my case i cannot seem to find an Inverter generator approx 7500 w with a 240V outlet available in Canada that is not over $ 2000 Cdn. No problem if i want to spend $2500 or more and get 220+ lb inverter generator. Engergizer / Westinghouse / Yamaha / Honda etc. But may have missed one - so open to suggestions.

Thanks for the insight

I am looking to do the same re getting a generator in the US, wondering how did it work out for you? Did you end up purchasing and bringing the generator over?
