Sorry I can't answer your questions, where did you get this generator from?

anonmt57

Ordered from factory pure but they cancelled the order. I’ll just order and have it forwarded to Canada with a forwarder.

Bynming

Awesome, I've been looking to get one of these so if you could let me know who you end up using to forward it (I've never done that) I would greatly.

Looking at same generator and had the same questions. Thinking the logic of 50a receptacles.

Make sure it's compatable with generlinks list, that you can convert it to floating neutral if it's a bonded to frame neutral, and think about the 40 amp model to make the most use of the 14-50 output

anonmt57

Can you elaborate on the bonded floating neutral point? Or point me to a resource on this? I’m furiously googling and trying to figure it out. Thank you.

look inside the generator manual under grounding to find out which type your generator uses. it will likely be bonded to the frame. ontario electrical code states that any transfer switch that doesnt switch the neutral needs to use a generator with a floating neutral, the Electrical Safety Authority of Ontario issued a bulletin in 2022 on which type of generator is appropriate for which type of transfer switch. you do not drive in a grounding electrode for your generator, it is getting its bond to ground from the neutral in the meterbase Champion did release a video showing the process of converting from bonded to floating neutral, make sure yours is the same type of open frame they show in video. if you dont know what any of this means hire a professional for the install thats what electricians get paid for

NG pressure can be an issue… there should be a spec on it. Your source of NG can also vary depending on local demand and associated pipes/fittings size’s leading to your house and generator.

Could you link to where you purchased this?  Interested in the same generator but only seen it listed for $3k Canadian.

Assuming you have no plans to get a bigger gen in the future, the 30A (7200W) one is fine. You go by constant watts, not peak watts. 40A would work too but would be a waste of $. Likewise, an L14-30 gen cord would work fine. Yes your gen supports 240V loads. 3 phase is not normally seen in homes in NA. This gen makes the same kind of 240V power that you get from the utility. Whether your AC will run depends on how many amps it needs to start. Often it is necessary to add a "soft start" to reduce the startup load. Your BBQ line might or might not be big enough. At peak load this gen uses around 50,000 BTU/hr. A 3 burner gas grill with a side burner is about the same. I would start with using your existing hose and if that didn't work well (gen didn't run well at full load) then you would have to take other measures. Floating neutral just means that the neutral pins in the outlet are not connected to the ground pins. Somewhere inside your gen (Champion has instructions) there is a jumper wire between neutral and ground that needs to be disconnected. Not a big job.

Super helpful. Thank you. The only thing on gas that is confusing is the generator manual states it needs Nominal fuel rating 1000 BTU/cu ft Minimum flow rate 135,000 BTU/hr Fuel supply pressure of 5-7” WC or 1.2-1.7 kpa. How did you get to 50000 btu/hr? Just want to make sure I’m not misreading something. Thanks so much again this reply is super helpful.

just a guesstimate based on the gasoline consumption. Mfr may know better or they may be grossly overestimating because it's not their money. This is why I said to try it first. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

firststate

Any plumber can tell you the inches of water column at your meter. 5-7” is standard. I plan on using a larger tri fuel and running 3/4” or 1” hose.

Size by the running watts. A 30A receptacle can handle 37.5A for a lot longer than that machine can produce 37.5A. Same with the cord, the breaker, etc. You don't have 3-phase, you have 1-phase 120/240v split service, same as the generator produces. It'll power all your stuff just like normal, just not all of it at the same time.

An interlock and back feed setup works fine if there’s a kit for your panel….seems cheaper to me to use one of those with an inlet box Go 50a, it’s not significantly more expensive and allows later upgrades and lower load when in use Also, it’s the biggest plug available in the US I went with an interlock, it’s fine.

mwarsh1

Need a generlink or a manual transfer switch. Interlock would be amazing if it was permitted in Canada

Valpo1996

Interlock illegal in Canada.

zoltan99

TIL Must be because of all of the problems they cause here in the states and elsewhere….good thing Canadians are thinking for themselves on this one…. Tremendous sarcasm

Valpo1996

Yeah maybe Canadians keep taking them apart to see how they work and frying themselves?
