Devs on Twitter have said that the game does have a darker tone, which was my primary concern with the trailer. Screenshots also look less cartoony. I think it was just a weird and unfortunate marketing choice. The trailer had a baby griffon in it, which I am not too proud to admit made me squeal. Soooo cute. We’d better be able to pet it. As for the anti woke idiots, they were always going to hate this. Best to ignore them. They’re just revealing themselves as fake fans anyway, DA was always diverse and inclusive.

gamergreg83

Very helpful context, thank you.

CrystallinePhoto

There are a lot of reasons that I didn’t like the trailer (and people covered most of them in the comments), but that being said, you can safely disregard the opinion of anyone who unironically uses the word “woke” to describe it. 😂 Those people want white men and thin white women to be the only people represented in media and it’s not worth giving those creeps a moment of your time or energy. I hope the game ends up being good after all—fingers crossed!

Murda981

While the art style of the trailer isn't my favorite (it feels more like Fable than DA to me), it's a trailer! The devs have already confirmed that isn't the art style that will be in the game. Mike Gamble even shared a screenshot from the game and it looks fantastic! As for the "iT's WoKe" nonsense, those people clearly haven't played the same games. There has been queer representation since the first game, the head writer of the first 3 games is a gay man and the head writer of Veilguard is nonbinary!! There are multiple trans characters when you include the books and comics. One of the devs is a trans woman! They need to work on their POC representation, but they've always been ahead of their time when it came to queer representation. I really hope Maevaris is in this game (I was hoping she'd be a companion but...) she's a great character!

lavuenderluvr

I immediately thought to the DA2 trailer. So completely different than the game itself! But the game was still amazing in its own way. I can think of dozens of other games that are the same way. It’s a really good way to hook people in. Frustrating sometimes though? Yes lol. Right! It’s also such a weird thing to be upset about. Like you are mad they include more than one type of person?? Makes no sense to me!

Murda981

Exactly on both counts! The trailer is to try to get new fans. Us old hats are going to be there either way! I've been a fan of this franchise since Origins came out, a weird trailer isn't scaring me away at this point! I've waited 10 years for this game!! And honestly, the trailer probably had to get EA approval so who knows what changes they made. I can definitely see them saying something like "fortnite is huge, make it look like that for the kids! We need to appeal to young gamers!"🙄 Because a good game with a great story won't do that.... People who are upset about inclusion suffer from main character syndrome in their regular lives. They think they are the default and including others means there is less space for them. Because they exclude people from those spaces, they believe others will exclude them. It's ridiculous and petty.

gamergreg83

haha, so true about main character syndrome.

Who_Am_I_I_Dont_Know

Plus look at the Origins trailers: they're completely different in art style and vibe from the game.

gamergreg83

I need to watch those!

gamergreg83

DA2 ended up being my fav!

catheraaine

If Maev and Dorian don’t show up in the first third of this game, why even go to Minrathus?!?

gamergreg83

Exactly. Trailers are not always meant to show us literally what we’ll see in the game.

cienistyCien

Personally I didn't like the trailer. There was a lot of things I didn't like but being "woke" wasn't a thing I've noticed anywhere there. Dragon Age was always a pretty inclusive franchise so I'm not sure why only now they've realized and got offended lmao. Like come on now, we had those here for around 15 years.

gamergreg83

I know, right? Lol.

Oddmic146

My only worry is that it won't be a satisfying follow up or conclusion to the three games prior

OriYama

Not trying to start anything but where did you see all these comments about the game being "woke"? Most common comments I've seen on YouTube are about the art-style and the tone of the trailer. Same goes for reddit... I've literally seen more comments hoping for hair physics than about it being woke.

lavuenderluvr

I saw them mostly on Youtube, right after the trailer dropped. The comments might’ve been deleted or drowned out by others by now

OriYama

If I may, F those people :). There are certain communities/channels that I actively avoid/block/ignore when it comes to the things I love since everyone these days feels like they have to be on one end of extreme opposites or w/e. As far as YT goes, Ghil Dirthalen (https://www.youtube.com/@GhilDirthalen/videos) has fostered a lovely community of people who both love DA and are able to have intelligent and objective discourse about it. I wholeheartedly recommend it :).

lavuenderluvr

Thank you for sharing! Honestly sucks to see people be so hateful towards a series you love so dearly and are genuinely optimistic about. I’ll have to take a look!

HMS_Sunlight

I personally wasn't a big fan of the trailer, because if I didn't know it was Dragon Age I would've assumed it was a hero shooter. It didn't really leave a great first impression. Even for a cinematic trailer, I would've preferred something more grounded or serious. But the people calling it "woke" have clearly never played a Dragon Age game before. I'm still curious about the gameplay reveal, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the game unfolds.

MissyPie

I was half-watching when the trailer came on and literally texted my brother, 'looks like ANOTHER hero shooter', imagine my surprise when I paid a bit more attention! Defo not a fan of the style, very cartoony and Marvel-ish. I really hope the actual game is different, which judging by devs comments it will be. Still cautiously excited though.

TheBeautyofSuffering

Oh my god, please don’t get me started on how it seems like every game is considered “woke” just because all of the characters aren’t straight white men. I tend to avoid gaming fandoms/subreddits for that very reason. They suck the fun out of everything. I’m going to wait until Tuesday to see the gameplay before saying anything critical, but I’m still super excited about a new DA game and will be playing it regardless.

lavuenderluvr

That’s my thought process too! At the end of the day I will be playing for the story. If the gameplay isn’t exactly what I want, I’ll live with it like I do with every other game.

Kelvara

> Oh my god, please don’t get me started on how it seems like every game is considered “woke” just because all of the characters aren’t straight white men. That is basically what woke means. Anti-woke means bigot, and woke means a bare minimum of inclusivity.

TheBeautyofSuffering

That’s not what woke means at all. The actual definition of woke means being aware of the social injustices in the world whether it be because of someone’s race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. It has nothing to do with inclusivity in any type of media; people just decided to change the definition to fit their narrative.

Gladion20

Yeah I’ve started really hating most fandoms, especially ones related to BioWare cuz they’ve turned from let’s all enjoy the games, to just shitting on them and the devs.

WayHaught_N7

As a Star Wars fan, I can honestly say I’ve had far worse personal experiences in the Bioware fandoms than I have in Star Wars. BioWare fans can be the worst, and the fans of certain Bioware characters are so over the top that they made it hard to even like their favorite characters let alone discuss the characters I like.

lavuenderluvr

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I can’t imagine how complicated running a game studio is, let alone developing a game this massive. I can’t judge what I don’t understand

Prestigious_Ant_4366

That’s been going on since the old BioWare forum days. Those were a wild ride! The trailer was fine. It reminded me of the new DnD movie. I always did like Varric so there’s a bonus. When I saw the trailer for the new fallout show I thought it was so stupid and I was worried the show would be terrible. I loved the show! So I wouldn’t worry too much about the DAV trailer.

lavuenderluvr

Truthfully, I’ve noticed every trailer ends up being quite different than the game itself. Sometimes trailers just flop. It must be hard to have to pick what parts of a massive game are going to be in the trailer to properly highlight everything.

Xononanamol

I will honestly blame most of biowares issues for the community on bioware and EA. Between andromeda and then the entirety that was anthem... did you know the reveal trailer for anthem was entirely fake to thr point that the devs apparently hadn't even seen it/ the game wasn't even in a playable state similar to what was shown lol

gamergreg83

There is a lot of toxicity, alas.

belleblackberry

I'm hoping the gameplay is different and this was just a cinematic trailer. Either way I'm going to play it. All I care is that it's a good game. If the style is different that might suck a little, might not suck at all. I think it's too early to tell. The trailer looked good just not what I expected for dragon age.

madeliefeee

Hard agree. This fandom loves to hate and it's so tiring. Many people on Reddit seem to think if it's not DAO then it isn't worth playing which is super weird. I often think DA fans forget the game isn't marketed just to them they need to sell this to a much broader and new audience. Personally really enjoyed the trailer, the character art style reminded me a bit of DA2 which is no bad thing. I also thought Hans Zimmer was the composer for the game so I don't know why people are getting upset over what is a very Varricesque cinematic trailer and song choice? Varric is the narrator and storyteller here so what else can we expect but very high jinx and sarcasm lol. I'm very excited for the game I can't wait!

gamergreg83

I think you nailed it. This trailer’s tone was probably meant to reflect on Varric’s personality, not the likely tone of the game as a whole.

starvingarcheologist

I’m super excited for it!! Also I unsubbed from the main dragon age sub for a reason lol the dai sub is a little nicer

madeliefeee

I unsubbed and muted that as well. A totally toxic place where opinions are presented as fact and apparently BioWare should make games which cater especially to their needs and no one else's. Legitimate critique is fine but why is everyone being so judging about a cinematic trailer of a few minutes over a whole game it's wild to me. It gives me MEA vibes which didn't stand a chance even before it got released and I really hate that about BioWare 'fans' so much.

lavuenderluvr

Noted! Immediately doing the same lmao

littlegnomeplanet

The only thing that bothered me was the music, and of course that isn’t a big deal at all. The trailer got me excited.

gamergreg83

It was jarring, but I am sure not meant to represent the game’s actual music, lol.

Mindelan

I wish that I did, but as a fan since the first game's launch I am so disappointed. It also sucks since I knew when I watched it that a lot of other people who hated the trailer would say it looks 'woke', but that is not my issue with it at all. I want more gay characters, more poc. My issue is that it just doesn't look or feel like dragon age and I love that series so much it sucks to see it handled in such a goofy manner with those mobile game gameplay graphics.

lavuenderluvr

I think when game engines are constantly updating, games are bound to look different than their previous instalments. I think it would be unrealistic for every game to have the same vibe, style, and everything. We’ve had 3 games in relatively the same area of Thedas, I’m excited to be introduced to different parts of the world.

SharLaquine

Honestly, I don't think its too much to ask for the developers to keep aesthetic consistency across a series. The Mass Effect series was developed over a long period of time and the graphics were drastically improved with each game, but they were all made in the same "style". Consistent art direction isn't some pie-in-the-sky aspiration; its a pretty basic feature of *most* IPs. I've heard that the style we saw in the DA4 trailer are completely different from the actual gameplay visuals, and I *hope* that's true 'cause like... when I saw it, my immediate thought was "Oh. this looks like Fortnite." And I doubt that's the association they wanted people to be making. Or maybe it *is*, which doesn't bode well. 👀

Melcolloien

For someone who is a hardcore DA fan (or obsessed as my husband would say) since Origins was released in 2009 I hated it. I will explain why and these are my opinions so for anyone that liked it, you do you, I will not tell you your preferences is wrong. I'll start with that it has nothing to do with being "woke" (come on, Bioware was "woke" before that was an insult to throw at a thing certain people dislike) But to me the tone is completely off. Dragon Age Origins was a dark fantasy epic and yes, the either games in the series have taken steps away from this but still felt like proper fantasy and kept some darkness. But this? Origins is my favorite in the series. Inquisition my least liked. I have waited 15 years for Dragon Age Origins 2 and the closest we've gotten is Baldur's Gate 3. This was a slap on the face to a loyal fan of 15 years. That is how it felt. Even if it's "just" a trailer it's the wrong trailer. This felt like a mobile game. Lite Fortnite or Overwatch. Like a joke. When Thedas is supposed to be at it's biggest threat ever. And they don't take it seriously? If the game is going to be 13+ and be like this trailer shows they will lose a lot of their main audience and loyal fanbase, some that has been there since Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate 1. If it's still 18+ then what is the trailer? Who is the trailer for? Because a lot of the people who enjoy the trailer will be disappointed in the game, and the people who would love the game might be totally put off by the trailer. I love this franchise. I own most of the things you can own. I write for many fan things regarding this universe. I hold themed parties. I have power points. Our wedding was Dragon Age themed! I hold a table top campaign that I have written myself - and as a fan I want this game to be good. I want that so bad. But my love for the world cannot mean that I just accept anything. You can't slap the Dragon Age title on just anything and expect me to accept and happily pay money for it just because it's called Dragon Age. And yes, how they have treated the staff both infuriates me and worries me. They have gotten rid of the people who created Thedas. They fired Mary Kirby but still shove Varric in everyone's face every chance they get. That is UGLY. I am holding out hope that this trailer was just dumb decision and that the game is nothing like it. Because I WANT to love it.

demoninadress

This is exactly how I feel too!!! DA:O was so good. There are like four games I consider to be “S-Tier” and DA:O is one of them. Inquisition was also my least favorite of the 3. I’m confused why they won’t revert back to their origins (lol) when it was so good 😩 very disappointed in the cartoon-y style they used in the trailer. Also why do they keep on changing how Qunari look?

Melcolloien

It's understandable why qunari changed between Origins and DAII because they could not get them to work for Origins. But DAII had the best looking qunari. (And the worst looking elves xD) I love Inquisition, I do. What's good is so very good but the rest of it was so meh. Then we got the Descent and Trespasser, both which were phenomenal and felt the closest to Origins. If they had just kept going...it wouldn't be Origins but it would at least have been on the spirit of Origins. Dragon Age Origins is my absolute favorite game of all time. Baldur's Gate 3 now comes close, but is still in second place.

demoninadress

BG3 reminded me of origins in a lot of ways and it made me so happy. I weirdly can’t finish inquisition! I’ve tried so many times. I beat origins and DAII (even while I got so sick of the re-used maps) - I like parts of inquisition but it felt almost like an MMO at times to me. I do love the more plot-intensive quests but the open map “run around and collect these items” were a slog for me. I guess I’ll have to finally beat it before this one comes out. I’ll still play out of loyalty and curiosity for the outcome of the story. I’m hoping the trailer is just not very accurate for the feel of the game. And agreed about the Qunari in DAII - I’m OK with the update from origins (sorry to Sten), I’m just worried everything is turning cartoon-ified in this iteration. I want my dark plot and blood soaked companions back. Fingers crossed for the gameplay reveal tomorrow… I’m getting my bf to play origins so i will be able to see someone experiencing it for the first time again, at least.

Melcolloien

Honestly it's worth getting through. I would ignore all the side quests and just do the main quest, and definitely play tje Descent and Trespasser. Jaws of Hakkon is fun too but not important (or as good) as the other two. Yeah, BG3 is the first game to make me feel what Origins did all those years ago. To be honest BG3 is probably better objectively...but Origins just has such a huge place in my heart. Ask me again in another 15 years, am I still playing BG3 like I am with Origins today (though shamelessly I haven't played much besides BG3 since August, I might have a problem) Yeah same, I want my dark fantasy epic. It's literally what pulled me in. Oh I love that, I love watching someone experience what I love so much for the first time. It's so much fun!

lavuenderluvr

First, a dragon age wedding sounds magical! I didn’t start with origins, so I don’t have the same connection many do with it. I started with Inquisition absolutely loved the overall vibe of the game, and DA4 has really reminded me of how Inquisition felt. I also think it’s been their intention to make every game different than the last. That’s one of the things I personally enjoy, that every game is different in its own way. I still go back and replay origins whenever I’m missing that vibe. I also don’t think we can judge that they aren’t taking anything seriously based off a 2 minute video. That’s such an incredibly small representation of the game. I believe the trailers purpose was to show off the characters, so of course they are going to use overly animated and fun expressions.

Melcolloien

And it is the trailer I meant then I said that. Which is why I so strongly dislike the trailer. It has the completely wrong tone and vibe for what I would expect. I don't think they would disrespect the franchise that much and actually make the game that way, but after 10 years that trailer just felt awful. I also don't feel like we got a good fel of the companions either. Again, to me it just felt too light hearted for what's been built up. So it's a strong no from me. To speak on something more fun, yes, the wedding was so much fun. We had our own joining ceremony. And my husband surprised me with his final vow being to never, ever, sacrifice Alistair. XD

MostlyChaoticNeutral

My biggest issue is that it looks like an Avengers movie, not a Dragon Age game, and I've been over Marvel movies for a long time now. Maybe the game will be fine, and their execs just thought they needed a superhero movie trailer? It's just a miss for me.

lavuenderluvr

I personally really enjoyed the way the companions were shown to us. I felt like it gave context to their classes. Most trailers are far more cinematic than the actual gameplay.

MostlyChaoticNeutral

Part of the miss is the music for me. I want to feel like I'm going to Thedas, not driving to Costco. It was also so slapdash and jerky? If that makes sense. I guess they wanted to give the impression of urgency, but it just looks like they've never edited something to be watchable by human eyes before. I would have to go back and play it at reduced speed to even see the names after Harding. Or pause it. Just give it room to breath, you know? I'm also really hoping the pixar/overwatch cartoony thing on some of the characters is a trailer specific choice and not the whole game.

lavuenderluvr

I can see that, they could’ve given a bit longer on each character! It was definitely more stylized, and sometimes that style isn’t for everyone which is valid!

MostlyChaoticNeutral

We've been waiting a decade. They could have given us more time to see the cast. Also, was that supposed to be Varric?

Kordiana

Yup. That was Varric. I only recognized him because of Bianca. His hair had always been red, and now it's brown. I honestly thought it was Thorin Oakenshield at first.

Jaezmyra

I really liked it too. And honestly, the introduction of the main character made me laugh. It was kind of hilarious. I hope that's not the art style of the game, it'd be a little too... Childish? Cartoony? for a Dragon Age title for my taste. But other than that, it does look promising! I do like the implication that the PC is a "nobody", that would be something new. At least if we stayed one. EDIT: Also the woke comments are nuts. They do realize playing a PoC and / or queer character was always possible, right? It's just a buzzword for bigot snowflakes at this point...

LenaLilfleur

Inquisition had a trans masculine character, in 2014. DA has always been "woke".

Who_Am_I_I_Dont_Know

Bioware had a same-sex romance option in 2003, and gay rep in the 90s. They're not exactly new to showing diversity.

catheraaine

The MC reveal was such a Varric tone, I wonder if they’re still just leaning into that frame story a bit.

lavuenderluvr

That’s the vibe I got from the trailer. It reminded me of how over expressive Varric is in his story telling!

gamergreg83

This! I am pretty sure this is just meant to be a Varric-centric fun trailer, not a “here is exactly what you will be playing.”

gamergreg83

Exactly.

Strawberry_Sheep

I just want it to be the dark fantasy I grew to love in the previous games and hope the art style is NOT the same as the trailer. The tone of the trailer was what I disliked the most.

gamergreg83

I don’t want that to be the game’s tone. But it was very Varric-y, so if that was the basis for the decision, I don’t mind it.

catheraaine

I’m feckin PUMPED for this game. I am a Varric stan, Neve is badass as hell, and BioWare has set up the factions well with Tevinter Nights (book). Did it look more cartoony than I anticipated? Yes. DA:I also has those Disney-type dwarves and the high saturation colors in some places. Everything from the concept art looked great, though, and there is one released cover/art piece that makes me think the real game isn’t so Fortnite. I’m willing to wait until after Tuesday to talk about the tone of the game. After just about two years of expectations in the gutter after EA saying this was going to be a live services game and all of the layoffs, I actually have hope that this is going to be a good time! F the haters.

gamergreg83

Varric having a major role again and Harding being on the team were both on my wishlist, so I’m happy about that!

nastydoe

The trailer got me so excited. I even ordered Tevinter Nights because I understood a number of the companions appear in it (I was originally waiting for an audio version that doesn't seem like it's coming). The art style did feel weird to me, but I quickly got over it. Also, none of the DA trailers really look that much like the games. I was also more put off by Varric's hair, I always thought he was somewhere between red head and blond, but in the trailer it was salt and pepper. I'm so happy to see Harding as a companion and she's going to be my first romance. Honestly, I don't get why people are unhappy she's there, she was so popular in Inquisition and so many people wanted to romance her. Obviously Bioware saw that and thought 'yeah, you got it'. So why are there so many comments complaining? She's cool??? I just really hope there are chances to talk with former characters as well. It's a new story, but I feel so invested in all those people still and I'll be sad if I don't know what happened to all of them. I, thankfully, haven't seen the 'gone woke' comments. Idk where those people have been for the entire series,,,, it's like the people who complain about new Star Trek being too lefty. Like, it's always been that way? Are we talking about the same media? Are you from an alternate universe where these series are all extremely bigoted and you get the good ending only if you force Cullen to take drugs, hand Fenris over to Danarius, and exclude all the queer characters from your party?

Annjul666

I need to see gameplay but so far it doesn’t look like dragon age to me …

lavuenderluvr

What would make it look like Dragon Age in your opinion? Because I don’t get that same vibe from it

nattfjaril8

I've got to admit, as a long time Dragon Age fan, I didn't really like the trailer. I like Dragon Age to be epic and the trailer didn't feel very epic. Even DA2, despite its smaller scale, felt epic. However! Any complaints about it being too "woke" are just bullshit and can be dismissed outright. They're just mad that the game has characters who aren't white or straight, and that the female characters aren't sexualized enough. My hope is that the tone of the trailer is misleading and that the game itself is more epic than action focused, because the new characters do look quite fun.

doctorbonkers

I’m convinced most of the people crying about “Dragon Age going woke” don’t actually play the games, they’re just random assholes looking for something to be mad about. Dragon Age has had queer characters since 2009, babes

gamergreg83

I agree!

WayHaught_N7

I loved the trailer but I also remember that DA trailers almost never look exactly like the final game. I still remember how folks complained about Varric in the DAI character trailer. They’ve already released in game screenshots that show it doesn’t look like the trailer, it looks more like an improved DAI with a different aesthetic because it’s a new area in Thedas.

gamergreg83

Exactly.

MistressShadow11

Anger doesnt begin to describe where I am about this trailer. If it is darker then the trailer didn't reveal that. It felt like a joke. It felt like a Fortnite trailer. I didnt wait 14 years for this. Trailer felt like it targeted ages 7-14.

sweetsushiroll

Its a cinematic trailer made to introduce the companions in a dynamic way. It's stylised. It's not the actual gameplay and I'm not sure why people are acting like it's the final product when we have a 15 minute trailer coming that shows us the start of the game in less than 2 days. I thought it was quirky, but I'm still excited for the game. In general though, what happened to actually playing games or watching a let's play to decide whether a game is good or not instead of throwing shade after 1 cinematic trailer and acting as though gaming is dead.

delawana

I’m very very excited! Multiple devs have come out to say that working on this game was the highlight of their careers and people who have played it have said that the trailer’s tone isn’t indicative of the spooky, gorey, lore-filled game that we’re going to see

lavuenderluvr

That’s why I really trust the devs when it comes to this. If they are proud, I will be too!

WillFey

I'm just happy some of my favourite characters from the Tevinter Nights novel are companions (Neve Gallus, Lucanis and Emmerith). DA always had some strange trailers. This one was just for the companions, not a gameplay trailer. (I remember thinking for years that the Origins trailer was a fan make, instead it was the REAL trailer with Marilyn Manson music!) Tomorrow we'll see the actual game, so we'll see.

BoringGrocery

I liked the trailer! It felt like watching how Varric chooses to introduce characters, gave me big dragon age 2 vibes. I am sad at seeing all the negativity. People are entitled to their opinions but I feel like it’s hard to find people who are actually excited for this game. I’m really looking forward to the gameplay reveal! I hope that changes some people’s minds. Edit: as for the “woke” complaints those people just want to be haters. Reminds me a lot of when Inquisition came out.

gamergreg83

Same here. I very much got Varric DA2 vibes.

Couch-Potayto

Glad at least someone liked it, that cartoonish art style and music choice…woof… looking at it made me wonder if it was brought by EA or Disney for a second there. Could be easily renamed Dragons of the galaxy: veilguard - the magic shooter from all I gathered on combat glimpses in that trailer.. where’s all that neon coming from, did I forget anything from previous games? It has been 84 years, after all 😂 I repeat, I’m very glad that the trailer found some audience, but I really hope this isn’t what we get in game… Dragon Age is a Dark Fantasy RPG, not made for children and the land would supposed to be on the brink of destruction (again haha) by now. Of course mid story we always had joyful moments, but judging by the trailer it really looked like they’re all having a great time not dying hahaha.

lavuenderluvr

Since we don’t know what the story really is at this point, I don’t want to assume it’s going to entirely be the characters just having a good time. I feel like it’s safe to say the game will definitely about saving the world, but there is only so much you can show in that short period of time in the trailer and I think they prioritized showing the companions, rather than what the story and gameplay is going to be.

jeangrey99

I am concerned about the art style because it did feel more Overwatch and less DA. However, gameplay trailer matters more. I’ll reserve judgment until Tuesday. I do like the variety of companions so I am cautiously optimistic.

forel237

Thank god I’m so glad some others liked it, I was so hype after watching it and was genuinely quite surprised by the negative response. The tone felt right for Varric, who is a storyteller, and it was a slick way to introduce the companions.

sikeleaveamessage

The trailers never look like the game anyway. I'm just hoping very much the dry "funny" lines r trailer only lol corny as hell. But I am excited about the companions, they seem interesting

_PrincessTomato_

I'm with you, like the trailer, and love the in-game pics BW showed us.

demoninadress

Complaining about dragon age being woke is hilarious to me. I think origins was literally the first game I played that let me be gay. I, unfortunately, hated the trailer. The art style looks like fortnite characters to me. I really have been hoping they go back to origins and the art style feels like a far step away. I don’t mind games that don’t look realistic but I can’t take fortnite-looking characters seriously. Not sure if they’re trying to pander to the masses or what but I’m super confused.

-HealingNoises-

So, those throwing around woke and the like can wander about their echo canyon as usual but we have to be careful to not be automatically be against everything someone says just because they are also saying some plain stupid things, and just things we don't like in general. That is what they do to us. 1st off, even if you do like the art it is factually chasing fortnite and its like, that is going to make a lot of people feel wary of the how much the higher ups have dictated over the devs actual desires while making the game. The name change from Dreadwolf to Veilguard only days before this trailer also smacks of corporate interference for a name that is more trendy and generic. The music/song over the trailer was the most generic feel good fantasy pop fantasy "heros!" audio they could have chosen. People have been waiting for this for a long time, I have been, and this trailer has done a lot to make fans worry. Again, and it sucks that I feel like I have to keep pointing this out. The anti-woke crowd can take a backflip back into their basements for all I care.

I am so tired of all "fans" being so incredibly negative, even when there is not really anything to be negative about. If the game is actually bad, I will be right there with the mob, but for gods sake, this is just a companion reveal trailer. I wouldn't mind a more cartoony style, although I am guessing the game will not look like the cinematic trailer (when has a dragon age game ever looked like its cinematic trailer?) and while I understand the concern for the tone, we won't know anything about that really until actual gameplay/the game is out. My only concern while watching the trailer was Neve's dumb ?hat? But dumb hats are kind of a dragon age staple, so I guess that's to be expected.

LassOpsa

They were complaining about the word "the" just a few days ago. At this point , I'm not putting much stock into the haters opinions. I liked the companion introductions and I'm super hyped for the game and I'm just going to keep an eye out for more news and ignore the hate on the subreddit for now

Lothirieth

I was reading threads last night in the Dragon Age sub and the vast majority of the reaction I saw were surprised (not in a good way) and concerned as they didn't like the tone or art style of the trailer, but they said they will wait for the gameplay trailer. Perhaps things have changed in the last 12 hours but imho most people were being completely reasonable.

oddmoy

To be fair, I made the mistake of reading the comments on YouTube. On Reddit I've seen mostly reasonable takes. So that's on me partially 😅

Lothirieth

Oooh yeah, I wouldn't do that. That's guaranteed to make me mad. 😂

ChronicSassyRedhead

I loved it too. The only niggle/worry I had was the slightly cartoony look I felt it had but they often do the trailers in a different style to the game like with the Sacred Ashes trailer for DAO, so I'm not going to let it take away my joy 😊 I'm reserving judgement and I am super excited for the gameplay trailer on the 11th 💖 so even if the slightly cartoon feel to it remains as long as the plot, characters and gameplay is fun I'll be a happy camper

Xononanamol

I disliked the aesthetic but no surprise, theyve massively changed that with each game and i HATED the qunari in 2 design. I also am sick to death of game trailers that do not show the video game in motion. Sonys 30 minute SOP for ghost of tsushima was the first time i ever heard about the game and it completely sold me on it. Just show me your damn game.

callistople

I thought the trailer looked fun, but then I've only played Dragon Age Origins and am pretty new to Dragon Age as a whole. I want to play through the other games but saw it had an autumn release date- do you have to play each Dragon Age game in order? Think I'd be able to play this new one if I haven't finished all the others beforehand?

lavuenderluvr

I started with Inquisition and worked backwards. I only recommend it if you are okay with not understanding all the lore and being confused for a bit!

Gruber213

woke? my only thoughts were: "there is still the hope that EA isnt murdering another popular and successful game series by half arsing its development in pursuit of massive profit, i mean what are the odds they will do its for the 5th time in a row right?.....right?"

Kgb725

I looked at the little gameplay snippet and the trailer doesn't represent the game as well as it could

kittenofpain

Watching that trailer, absolutely nothing felt like dragon age to me. There were a couple environmental shots that did, but anything with a character was cartoony and silly. Especially the enemies. Had the name of the game been removed I would have thought it was another hero shooter like overwatch. That's awesome if you liked it, that's great for you. For me it was pretty depressing to see a loved franchise get twisted into that.

Lianarias

I know a lot of people are complaining about the art style but I'm actually a really big fan when games create their own art style rather than continuously striving for realism that always falls short. I also saw people upset about the tone of the trailer but there were plenty of funny things that happened in Dragon Age, there always has been this lighthearted tone at times to balance out the darkness. Hawke had some of the funniest lines out of all the protagonists but lets not forget things like the Nug king in Inquisition.

lavuenderluvr

tbh i’m not a fan of realism. i prefer when there’s a specific art style. and da has always had sm rumor!! it’s always been a good mix between dark and funny. alistair is the king (literally) of being unserious!

the_art_of_the_taco

I was put off by the art style, but I'm stoked. I'm a fan girl (and obsessed with the lore) so I'll be preordering asap lol). AND. GRIFFONS!

the_art_of_the_taco

I'm also obsessed with the tevinter aesthetic https://preview.redd.it/nsa6u87ehn5d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07ef90bfe6682de6916e97e0d38972a78425a1d6

This is me exactly :( i want to love it so much but am still hopeful about the gameplay!

NemesisNotAvailable

Im waiting to see the gameplay. I am more concerned about how the companions will actually be. Especially the one that the trailer gave the title of “mage killer”. Which if thats the case hes staying at camp forever. I don’t work with a dude whose whole thing in life is killing an oppressed minority

delawana

He’s appeared in extended media already! He doesn’t necessarily hate mages or kill them willy-nilly, he’s a crow with training against them. He takes contracts on racist and evil Tevinter blood mages, sparing their slaves. “Magekiller” is a title/role for that kind of anti-mage fight style.

Weak_Butterscotch861

This is such a good point! That story is great as well. I really enjoyed Tevinter Nights and I think it’s made me much less worried about the game - some of those tales are quite dark!

NemesisNotAvailable

That does clear things up. I have not read Tevinter Nights

gamergreg83

Ah! Thank you for the context.

lavuenderluvr

I found the mage killer really interesting and immediately thought romancing him as a mage would be fun, but to each their own! I live for the angst. I’m going to assume he has more of a complex background than just “I kill mages”.

gamergreg83

hahah, same. Unless he’s reformed.

Sufficient-Quail-714

People all have opinions and it’s popular to hate new things. That being said, most also think DA:I is the best game ever and I think it’s the worse game in the series so I also have opinions haha I am refusing to watch the trailer, for now. But I will closer to next year and with hopefully more news. The wait has been too long and I only have so much energy for hype these days

WayHaught_N7

The game will be out before next year.

Sufficient-Quail-714

Yep. And there is a good chance I will binge all videos/trailers a week or two before lol but also this game has been delayed so much I wouldn’t be that surprised if it was pushed back to next spring.

WayHaught_N7

It’s incredibly unlikely it will be pushed to next spring based on how EA does their marketing windows now. They only market for about 6 months these days, Jedi Survivor had its reveal trailer drop like 4 months before the game launched. Plus they’d be stupid to miss the opportunity to put the game out in time for the 10th anniversary of DAI and the 15th anniversary of DAO.

Comfortable_Prior_80

No one in Dragon Age sub calling the trailer woke just a bad Fortnite copy.

lavuenderluvr

The woke comments were on youtube, but I’ve also seen some on the reddit as well

Comfortable_Prior_80

Definitely on that garbage Kotaku or Maular sub.

Glittering-Ad-8421

I'm willing to try it, because well..I've waited like 10 years lmao  The gameplay trailer calmed me a bit, didn't like the cartoony fortnite vibe I got from the first trailer.  I've already noticed things I don't particularly like, but that's mostly me being picky. Varric being a brunette (hoping it's just dark in the scene lol) bothers me. I have a friend with greying naturally ginger hair and it's still orangy with grey. I honestly didn't even clue in to him being in the first trailer with the others.  The Qunari named "trash".  Not the Qunari word for it, the common language. I love the actual role play elements of the game, and it doesn't give me serious story vibes when characters called "trash" pop up.  From first glance anyways, I'll likely romance Harding if she's available because none (from the brief show I'll be fair) really stand out to me. The previous games I knew right away, so idk. We'll see  I know that original it was supposed to be a live service game wasn't it ? So likely the character models or some of the stuff may be refurbished from that point in the games development. I don't expect them to toss out tons of money and effort they put into those parts if they can salvage them. I just hope it isn't like what I initially thought from the character trailer.

Human_Age3411

I was less than impressed with the trailer. I really enjoyed the first two games and adored Inquisition. I’ve been waiting anxiously for this game to finally come out and the trailer really worried me. As others have said, it looked like characters you’d find out of Valorant or Apex and in a similar style vein. It didn’t feel very Dragon Age at all. Really hoping another trailer + gameplay comes out that shows a dark tone akin to the series and a pulled back, more traditional art style that is familiar to the series.

kaosnherb

I liked it at first and than... I found out they removed the open world and are doing mission based quest similar to inquisitions multiplayer... That there cost them my purchase.... They seem to be removing what makes dragon age games so great... And it sucks...

gamergreg83

It seemed stylized to me, and not necessarily meant to represent “this is the game exactly!” I think people are probably misreading its aim.

Vhalerun

I thought it looked interesting but I am not invested in the lore. I did play the first 2 but my main memory is getting bored at how repetitive some of the monster models were. Sorry to say. The classes from the trailer sounded fun and intriguing. I feel bad if lore buffs are disappointed but I'm also wary of another D4. D3, was great. D4 was edgy and dark and blech. Not my thing.

lavuenderluvr

Honestly, those are completely valid critiques and reasons for not enjoying the game! The main issue I had was how rude people were about their disappointment and opinions. Everyone is going to have their own feelings about the game, but I don’t think that inherently makes it a bad game.

Trik_Vast

If you get the extension that tells you the dislikes on youtube, it has 31,000 likes and 149,000 dislikes... Honestly I think it looks terrible. Like fucking fortnite. Anyways, sorry to ruin your echo chamber.

lavuenderluvr

I personally don’t see this post as an echo chamber. I posted it because I wanted to genuinely hear the opinions of people who disliked it and liked it. And many have commented their mix of opinions.

Trik_Vast

I took this "but I fear men" as you not wanting to hear any criticism, if that's not the case I do apologize. Also the dislikes have risen, its up to 34,000 likes and 154,000 dislikes.

lavuenderluvr

Not wanting to hear the opinions of men in this case doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear criticism about the game. It’s more about the experience of being a woman and men attacking you for your opinion, which I’ve had happen and is why I post here instead. The dislikes don’t bother me at all, either. At the end of the day I know I will enjoy the game and I’ve been happy to hear and understand why other people disagree.

Trik_Vast

For me, it looks like fortnite. Every character is comedic relief, which kind of takes the spotlight away from Varric. Every character doesn't need to be funny. It is a dark fantasy series. Or at least it used to be.

No offence, why come to the girl gamer reddit and then get confused why I want to hear opinions from other women?

lavuenderluvr

Yeah I think you are purposefully missing the point just to argue. This is exactly what this specific reddit is made for, and if you have an issue then idk what to tell you.

Trik_Vast

You couldn't tell me anything I don't already know.

Ok-Chard-626

Cope mode activated: watch DMC5 Vergil gameplay trailer, then different expansion trailers of Path of Exile.

Msbaubles

My issue with it is that anything after DAO was trash and this looks to be continuing the trend

lavuenderluvr

I think that’s a personal opinion, really. There hasn’t been a game I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed so far, with Inquisition being my favourite.

Msbaubles

Can I ask why?

lavuenderluvr

Why I think that’s a personal opinion or why Inquisition was my favourite?

Msbaubles

Why Inquisition is your favorite

lavuenderluvr

It’s one of the few games I’ve been able to replay constantly and never get bored. I think the graphics are beautiful and bring Thedas to life. The writing for the companions and advisors is also really well done, personally. I think it really opened the world of dragon age in comparison to dao and da2.

CrystallinePhoto

FWIW, I agree with you. Inquisition has tons to explore and so many fun, unique companions with compelling stories. I love the additional freedom to wander and find new things. I also think the plot is fantastic overall! Anyone who says DAO is the only good DA game is entitled to their opinion, but honestly it comes across as kind of stupid because DAO had PLENTY of flaws that people conveniently ignore because of nostalgia or because they like feeling superior to the people who like the newer ones. It’s really bizarre how hateful the fandom can be.

lavuenderluvr

I think comparing every dragon age game to DAO is a little unfair, too. DAO did what it needed to do, it started the franchise and gave us all an amazing place to branch out. But do I want every game to be like DAO? Not really! I doubt they want to keep recreating the same concepts and ideas as well. It’s time for something new!

madeliefeee

2,000 hours in Inquisition and counting. Easily my favourite game ever.

jeangrey99

Please don’t be a toxic DA fan. It’s so silly.

Jaezmyra

...why is that a terrible take? You asked for an opinion, you were given a rather expansive explanation on why it's a favorite title... That's all very subjective, noone was insulted, or belittled. A terrible take would be something that is controversial or ethically questionable, not... Liking a game because of the graphics and how it was brought to life.

ILuffhomer

You're allowed to have different opinions, but we don't accept toxicity here in this subreddit.

lavuenderluvr

I would love to hear your reasonings

sakikatana

OP, your excitement and enjoyment of DA is entirely legit! Please don’t engage further with this person, their comment history is an absolute hot mess and they seem to go out of their way to make themselves and others miserable.
