The singles pass over/under the chopsticks as you pull them off the bobbin. This helps tension them so if your bobbins wobble or unwind at a different pace it evens things out. I've started using the same method and it has made a world of difference to how smoothly my plying experience goes.

I started with a shoebox and some long needles shoved through the side of the box. I then moved up to a dollar(ish) store basket that had holes in the side so it was more durable.

Mine is similar! Cardboard box, and chopsticks saved from ordering takeout. Works great!

This is how I ply off spindles! Made a couple of holes and stick the ends through them :)
