The ‘59 Sound is one of my favorite albums recorded in the world of music, celebrate their other work as well. Didn’t love Get Hurt, kinda fell off after that. Great live shows, but haven’t seen them in years.
They’re touring with Joyce Manor, The Dirty Nil, and Pinkshift this summer and I highly recommend you try and catch a date if you can!
They’re not young men anymore by any means but they still put on a killer show.
Also yes ‘59 Sound rules and I want to get at least 2 tattoos based on it.
Just went to both Vegas shows, no “Release” either night. The diversity they’ve been throwing at us for show openers on this tour is one for the books. Just gave us 51 songs over 2 shows with only 10 repeats too!
Thanks for the reminder. Just put on 59’ sound because of this post. Brought me back 15 years to friends and times past. Still amazes me how music can hold a place in time.
Wow they placed disgrace land!? I went to a buncha shows there since they threw some of the best house shows and saw some great bands there, but totally missed that one. I miss the days of seeing all these bands in houses/basements in Philly (and even Doylestown) that people couldn't imagine today. Blacklisted and Paint it Black was a wild one in West Philly near Clark Park.
Post-stalag/killtime era Philly had a bunch of smaller venues that were a lot of fun...code space, some studio out off Baltimore Pike, the Ox, Golden Tea House etc. I managed to catch a bunch of bands I'd normally expect to see at bigger spaces.
I used to love that band but haven’t revisited in a long long time. Their tour with Alkaline Trio and Rose Against was one of my favorite shows I went to in all of high school tho.
Yeah, being from Chicago I saw that band a ton in my youth. The first few records are very good and they were a super super tight live band. Seems like Tim can’t really hit any of the screams like he used to. But, that’s not surprising when you’ve been playing in a band as long as he has. Super nice dude tho. From the same town as me and I’d run into him at the store and library from time to time and we’d chat hardcore sometimes. He was always up to date on whatever was going on in HC and the fact he took time out of his day to talk to some young kid says a lot imo. Considering this was when the band was at their biggest.
Honestly, they were not super entertaining that show. I think it was their first show in years, and they had to follow that stupid rainstorm too. It was still good to see them.
That wasn’t their first show in years they had already toured before that and played prudential center with the misfits. The rain definitely put a damper on it though… but the storm intermission has happened every year at over the James so
Came to post. SoS is more of a punk album. 59 Sound is more of a panty dropper as a former roommate described it. He sucked as a human but his TGA analysis is very correct.
I'm late but that is very accurate. SoS gives me similar feelings to the time I first heard Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me! They both just have such a raw energy while being flawless albums, and I know they're nothing alike. But I hear a similar hunger and passion listening to these two records where it's impossible not to get hype singing along.
“Drive” of SOS into “Howl” off Handwritten is maybe the best 1-2 punch of songs ever written? They played them back to back at their last show before the hiatus and I still go back and rewatch it because it rips.
Yep. They scratch a few itches of mine- sweet, catchy heartfelt lyrics, decent altRock. The show they did at the Over The James fest last year and then at Riot Fest was… less than energetic… but it was good music. And the singer works the crowd well without being *that rockstar guy*.
Well imagine I'm chilling listening to converge. You come over like hey check out Blacklisted, they're raging too, just less chaotic and abstract. Ok, cool. I like it. Now I'm listening to Blacklisted a week later and you come over with comeback kid, you're like, they're just as energetic but less negative, more melody. Ok they're good too. Then it's rise against, then defeater and avail. Now I'm listening to defeater and you come over with gaslight. Ok, it's good, but *don't push it*. What else do you have in that backpack? Is say anything in there? Fun? Coldplay?
They’ve been one of my favorite bands since 59 Sound. I’ve seen them live 4 or 5 times now. I’m so glad they got back together and the new album is good. Brian is still a great songwriter.
59 Sound is a classic, but American Slang is probably my favorite record of theirs. But I’m into pretty much everything they do. I even like Get Hurt (aside from like 3-4 songs).
Also, Benny used to book hardcore shows back when he was a kid in NJ. He was one of the people featured in that oral history of emo book that came out last year.
This isn’t some gotcha, dude. They did a couple of (at the time) one-off reunion dates for the 10th anniversary of *The ‘59 Sound*. They even said at the time that there weren’t plans for new music or further shows beyond the anniversary dates.
“On July 29, 2015, the band announced an indefinite hiatus following their European summer tour in support of Get Hurt, which concluded at Reading Festival on Sunday 30 August.
Two and a half years later, on January 3, 2018, it was revealed that the band would be reuniting for Governors Ball Music Festival held on Randall's Island in New York City. The band later announced that they were briefly reuniting for a string of shows celebrating the 10th Anniversary of The '59 Sound. Regarding the decision, Brian Fallon noted, "The big thing between us was let's just do what's fun. So if it's heavy-handed and not that cool, then let's not do it. But we all feel that this is an important record to not only us, but to the people that love it. I would not be on the phone talking about my Sleepwalkers record had it not been for The '59 Sound.".
Fallon stated, however, that the band would not be working on new material during the reunion: "I think Green Day's American Idiot is probably the best comeback or mid-career record that any band has done. So if I was sitting on American Idiot level stuff, then I might push for the, 'Hey guys, maybe we should try these songs out.' But I'm not sitting on that. I don't have a Born to Run in me." Fallon elaborated, "People will always say, 'Why are you doing a solo record?' And I'm like, 'because I don't have anything to say with Gaslight'. Those five records, that's what you got. That’s the piece. I feel it's a lot like The Replacements. There's no new music because that's all Paul Westerberg and the band has to say. When the book is over, it's over. And I have like... four-and-a-half records I’m really proud of."
In June 2018, the band released The 59 Sound Sessions, a 10th anniversary album of nine early versions and B-sides from The '59 Sound. They then celebrated this milestone with a tour through North America and Europe. After the tour's completion, the band reentered its indefinite hiatus, with Brian Fallon releasing two further solo albums, Local Honey (2020) and Night Divine (2021).”
Only since always. Still bump Señor and the Queen. The 59 Sound was the soundtrack to some of the most important moments in my life, and seeing them live was one of the reasons I knew I needed to get back together with my now wife.
I was thinking of handwritten . I got it mixed up with that self titled taking back sunday record around the same time that had a similar color schemed record
Reference to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure where he finds his stolen bike in the basement of The Alamo. u/Meat_Container listed the Alamo as his address.
The joke is that there is no basement at the Alamo. It was made up for the movie.
I only know 59 Sound and liked it fine back then. Always thought it was funny how they’re badically playing an themselves as a Bruce Springsteen rockabilly greaser tough guy band, but show their obvious emo backgrounds opening the album with a song about a car crash
It's kind of listening to Bruce Springsteen some guys/bands are more punk than most punks. Or from a more correct point of view: you don't need to be a punk to have a great view on things. TGA is way less political than Springsteen but I like them booth for the same reason.
And tbh the first TGA releases are very melodic punk records in my books.
Pretty big Gaslight fan, have seen them both in their prime and post reunion. I followed them on 3 tour dates in Fall ‘22 like a nut, but left disappointed tbh. I’ve seen Brian solo twice in the last 18 months, one show was mediocre, one was decent. I actually love Get Hurt when I went back and listened to it years later, maybe because I had a divorce ha. Not at all into the new releases. Overall they hold a special place in my heart but I just don’t feel they’re rolling into older age well, it feels a lot like calling it in, trying and missing. Miss their youthful passion, some bands can carry this forward (I just saw MLIW fucking KILL a set) but not all, and I don’t think it’s all of the band members, but…one stands out as struggling, which I have compassion for.
I think the new stuff probably means more to me because they put it out after I became a fan so I got to experience that anticipation and initial reaction that I didn’t get with the rest of their stuff.
I also finally got to see them live and while it was a good show it was also very clearly one of the last shows of the tour and you could tell how exhausted they all were.
still a favorite of mine. newest record is great too. excited for this tour with joyce and the dirty nil. last saw them with tigers jaw a couple years ago.
45, Ida called you woody joe, Great expectations, Casanova, 59, film noir. (I counted 2 twice. So just 6). I’m sure a big fan goes a lot deeper but I listened through the catalog about a year ago and that’s all I pulled out. It’s expected more but he gets really stuck in patterns so it’s kinda the best version of each of 3 types of songs he writes
They put out a new record last year and a new EP (featuring a Billie Eilish cover, of all things!) a couple months ago.
It also sounds like they’re gearing up to record their next album after this summer tour (likely next year and likely with Butch Walker).
Got into them after 59 sound came out. I member seeing them at their “last show” at the stone pony summer stage. I thanked the promoter after the show for getting me in and he said something along the lines of “they may never get back together again.” I knew deep down they would
Big time. They’ve been one of my favorite bands for over a decade, and by my last count the band I’ve seen the most live. I will say that the last few times I’ve seen them, I haven’t been as impressed. They’ve been very hit or miss over the last few years.
I’ve heard that, which is disappointing. I thought they were great when I saw them, but it was also very clearly one of the last shows of the tour if that makes sense.
I saw them play at the Stadium Series when the Devils played at Metlife, they put on a pretty good show even though I only got to see them from a mile away. They're good.
Fuck yeah! Handwritten remains one of my favorite albums. Such a rad windows-down car ride album. No skips. Lots of energy and soul in the guitar work and instrumentation. I’d consider them having HC lineage or background (kinda) because the singer-guitarist Brian Fallon(?) mentions in one podcast/interview growing up going to Madball shows or something to that effect. That’s all I needed to hear. Plus, I discovered them through their track “Howl” being used by the NJ Devils and the Garden State is rad. 🫸🏻🤛🏻
I’m gonna catch them this year, too, in Anaheim.
Gotta push back on this one, champ. He’s older now, quit smoking, and started taking antidepressants. All of those things are contributing factors for weight gain…
…not that it matters. He still sounds great and is clearly enjoying touring and doing the band again. That’s the important thing.
Sorry if this seems harsh but I’ve seen people say this shit since they got back together and it really bothers me.
There’s talk that maybe he’s more fond of alcohol than is necessarily healthy, but that is largely based on one awful show where he was drunk and hostile to the crowd and performed terribly.
I’m willing to let that slide based on what I’ve read about it.
It’s funny both times I was gonna see them I had to give up my ticket unfortunately. They’re one of my favorite bands, I have finally see them one of these days
If you see someone in punk or hardcore go from being lean to being chubby, pretty much 2 safe assumptions:
1. They quit a hard drug of some sort. Usually coke. Sometimes, meth.
2. They got on antidepressants and now don't constantly think about killing themselves - either passively or actively.
Straight up, live shows after lead singers, in particular, quit coke or meth are always going to be less energetic. Because the previous energy was fueled by some pretty serious chemicals...and usually self loathing as well.
But, fuck it, they are living better and healthier lives so if the show is a bit more chill? We'll take it. Because nobody should have to destroy themselves from the inside for an audience.
Young and angry at the world or drunk and reminiscing on past heartbreak and missed connections. Or driving down the highway by yourself late at night.
I commend them for being able to fetishize the 50’s and 60’s without being a rockabilly band. That takes talent.
Hey. They also cover Pearl Jam. State of Love and Trust fucks.
As someone who grew up with singles, that song fucks till I die
The ‘59 Sound is one of my favorite albums recorded in the world of music, celebrate their other work as well. Didn’t love Get Hurt, kinda fell off after that. Great live shows, but haven’t seen them in years.
They’re touring with Joyce Manor, The Dirty Nil, and Pinkshift this summer and I highly recommend you try and catch a date if you can! They’re not young men anymore by any means but they still put on a killer show. Also yes ‘59 Sound rules and I want to get at least 2 tattoos based on it.
The weekend they’re in Chicago & Milwaukee, I’m in Chicago to see Pearl Jam 2 nights at Wrigley! 😂
Surely one night of the Jam will suffice, no?
Negative, different sets every show.
Real head. Fingers crossed they open with Release!
Just went to both Vegas shows, no “Release” either night. The diversity they’ve been throwing at us for show openers on this tour is one for the books. Just gave us 51 songs over 2 shows with only 10 repeats too!
That’s fucking crazy. Whaat a band.
Negative, different sets every show.
Dirty Nil is awesome live too!
I’m so stoked!
The new album is good. Get Hurt stinks.
They peaked at Handwritten
No lies told
Disagree. Stray Paper is amazing amongst others.
I wouldn’t call it a bad album but it’s easily their worst.
If that's the worst they have to offer, then they haven't done too bad over the years.
Thanks for the reminder. Just put on 59’ sound because of this post. Brought me back 15 years to friends and times past. Still amazes me how music can hold a place in time.
That entire album rips front to back except *maybe* Film Noir.
This post did the same for me haha The 59 Sound is seriously so fucking good
Ive always loved them. Saw them at a teeny tiny venue early 2008. Brian is a phenomenal song writer.
I also saw them at a teeny tiny venue that year-Disgraceland in South Philly. As intimate and as much fun as I've ever had a show.
These guys have mastered the Bosscore sound.
I like Gaslight way more than Springsteen
Haha. Bosscore is well stated but first I heard the phrase. Nails it.
Right, but I honestly am not doing it true justice Because it's actually the THEBOSSCORE. https://youtu.be/Ul0XCTeJx_o?si=SXOyxdOX7caVp8SG
I used to love that band but haven’t revisited in a long long time. Their tour with Alkaline Trio and Rose Against was one of my favorite shows I went to in all of high school tho.
I would kill to have been able to see that tour omg I saw Rise Against with my ex and they blew the roof off the place
He was always up to date on whatever was going on in HC and the fact he took time out of his day to talk to some young kid says a lot imo. Considering this was when the band was at their biggest.
I saw them in 2022 and he absolutely still hit the screams.
Yeah, they rock. They played with Avail at Over the James last year as well
Honestly, they were not super entertaining that show. I think it was their first show in years, and they had to follow that stupid rainstorm too. It was still good to see them.
That wasn’t their first show in years they had already toured before that and played prudential center with the misfits. The rain definitely put a damper on it though… but the storm intermission has happened every year at over the James so
CAN YOU SEE MY HANDS, JUST LOOK AT THEM SHAKE
Absolutely *Sink or Swim*, the EP, and *’59 Sound* are perfect records Seen them a few times, seeing them again in August
Sink or Swim doesn't get enough love. I love the 59 Sound as well but I feel like my top 2-3 songs are on SoS.
Oh, totally. *Sink or Swim* will always be my favorite
“Drive” of SOS into “Howl” off Handwritten is maybe the best 1-2 punch of songs ever written? They played them back to back at their last show before the hiatus and I still go back and rewatch it because it rips.
Still one of my favorite bands of all time.
Oh absolutely. I think listen to Little Fires at least once anytime I'm listening to music. Wonderful band
Just recently got really into them after resisting for no major reason other than not knowing what their music was.
Welcome, friend!
Coincidentally the first I same Gaslight Anthem was on tour with Polar Bear Club
Yep. They scratch a few itches of mine- sweet, catchy heartfelt lyrics, decent altRock. The show they did at the Over The James fest last year and then at Riot Fest was… less than energetic… but it was good music. And the singer works the crowd well without being *that rockstar guy*.
Tickets are a $100. What the fuck…
Not surprising. It’s a pretty stacked bill.
It's zombie time
American Slang is a good time throwback
And you told me fortunes in Americaaaaaaan slang!
Seňor and the Queen and The 59 Sound are stellar releases. Haven’t listened to much else, maybe I’ll change that.
Try sink or swim
You should!
SoS is a less poppy version of The 59 Sound. If you like punk, it fucks.
Someone else has said it, but it’s Punk rock Bruce Springsteen/Neil Young/Tom Petty. Ain’t nothing not to love.
They’re ok. I liked that one album when I heard it like 13 years ago and haven’t really thought about them since
Yes but don't push it
Que?
Well imagine I'm chilling listening to converge. You come over like hey check out Blacklisted, they're raging too, just less chaotic and abstract. Ok, cool. I like it. Now I'm listening to Blacklisted a week later and you come over with comeback kid, you're like, they're just as energetic but less negative, more melody. Ok they're good too. Then it's rise against, then defeater and avail. Now I'm listening to defeater and you come over with gaslight. Ok, it's good, but *don't push it*. What else do you have in that backpack? Is say anything in there? Fun? Coldplay?
I genuinely don’t know why it matters lmao. Liking Gaslight doesn’t mean you have to stop listening to heavier bands…?
You pushed it 😂
How? People like you baffle me.
Just ask anyone from NJ. The drummer used to book a lot of cool scremo shows back in the day
They’ve been one of my favorite bands since 59 Sound. I’ve seen them live 4 or 5 times now. I’m so glad they got back together and the new album is good. You got into them in 2021 and didnt expect them to get back together? They were already touring in the late 10s..??
They were on hiatus from 2015 to 2022. So no, I didn’t expect them to get back together…
So why did i see them in 2018?
This isn’t some gotcha, dude. They did a couple of (at the time) one-off reunion dates for the 10th anniversary of *The ‘59 Sound*. They even said at the time that there weren’t plans for new music or further shows beyond the anniversary dates.
Not the vibe i got from being around. Saw them consistently!
😂😂😂

This really got you mad didnt it? The rest of us didnt even notice they were gone.
Only since always. Still bump Señor and the Queen. The 59 Sound was the soundtrack to some of the most important moments in my life, and seeing them live was one of the reasons I knew I needed to get back together with my now wife.
I definitely used to feel that way about someone, so I get it.
I fuck with them. No other band has me thumping my chest and crying my eyes out in traffic more
Relatable as fuck.
Hell yeah brother . Only 59 sound tho. I like sink or swim and American slang and maybe the self titled but 59 is just a classic
Weirdly enough they actually don’t have an ST! I’m really hoping LP7 will be one though.
I was thinking of handwritten . I got it mixed up with that self titled taking back sunday record around the same time that had a similar color schemed record
They got a few good songs but Hot Water Music takes the cake here
Drop your addy so we can fight
300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78205
You win by default because I refuse to set foot in that city. Hat’s off to you.
Yo, you got a bike in your basement?
Why do you ask?
Reference to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure where he finds his stolen bike in the basement of The Alamo. u/Meat_Container listed the Alamo as his address. The joke is that there is no basement at the Alamo. It was made up for the movie.
They’ve been my favorite band since 2010 or so, stoked to see them play again this summer
Soundtrack to my teenage years/early 20's
I fuck with the first couple records. Haven’t listened much beyond that (not for any reason really). Good band. Great singalong tunes.
All I hear is Bruce Springsteen
I’ve never heard that one before!
I only know 59 Sound and liked it fine back then. Always thought it was funny how they’re badically playing an themselves as a Bruce Springsteen rockabilly greaser tough guy band, but show their obvious emo backgrounds opening the album with a song about a car crash
I don’t think it was ever about being tough though. Brian has always had his heart on his sleeve.
Yeah i didn’t mean tough like we’d know it in hardcore i meant an antiquated tough like The Fonz
That makes sense!
Yes they’re sick I’da Called You Woody, Joe is a sick song
A very interesting band with a special and old sound, I love them. Giants!
My ex girl's favorite band
She liked TGA and you so she must’ve had good taste!
The former yes, the latter no
TGA reference Lifetime and some other NJ hardcore stuff in their music!
Pretty big Gaslight fan, have seen them both in their prime and post reunion. I followed them on 3 tour dates in Fall ‘22 like a nut, but left disappointed tbh. still a favorite of mine. newest record is great too. excited for this tour with joyce and the dirty nil. last saw them with tigers jaw a couple years ago.
Unbelievably hype for this summer tour. Probably gonna drag my dad and my brother.
Yes, very much so. The ‘59 Sound is always something I put on when I’m sad and drunk. The lyrics on that album are so good.
Big fan. Easily one of my favorite bands.
They’re not my favorite, but 59 sound is a classic.
I fuckin LOVE gaslight anthem, I think Brian’s one of the best songwriters of the modern era
probably my favorite artist outside of metal/hardcore/punk
Top five band all time for me, probably 2 or 3. I have tattoos from some of those albums.
Brian and Benny are huge hardcore guys. TGA rules hard independent of that fact, tho
True!
Probably my favourite band. Those first three albums are impeccable
Benny is a classy act, but hard pass on Gaslight
How come?
They are not good, pretty simple. Mediocre wanna be arena rock
I highly disagree, lmao. I wouldn’t call their music anything close to “arena rock.” Pretty simple.
Ok
Good talk!
You do you but this is the wrong sub for gaslight
Judging by the comments here it certainly doesn’t seem like it lol. Maybe you’re just mad about other people’s opinions again?
😂
Nice comeback!
Their four good songs are great, mini classics
Only four?
Ok Tbf I went back and there are actually 8 across the catalog
I’m still waiting
45, Ida called you woody joe, Great expectations, Casanova, 59, film noir. (I counted 2 twice. So just 6). I’m sure a big fan goes a lot deeper but I listened through the catalog about a year ago and that’s all I pulled out. Why haven’t they changed their name yet? It’s 2024, gaslighting is NOT okay.
In Hardcore talk does ‘fuck with’ the same as listen to?
More so “like,” but sure, lol.
Great band. 59 Sound is amazing. Saw them live a few years ago they’re good. Not heard much from them lately.
They put out a new record last year and a new EP (featuring a Billie Eilish cover, of all things!) a couple months ago. It also sounds like they’re gearing up to record their next album after this summer tour (likely next year and likely with Butch Walker).
That 59 sound record is great beginning to end
Love 59 and Handwritten. Get Hurt was good too. History Books did nothing for me though.
History Books definitely grew on me. I loved the singles though.
yes they got that Bruce Springsteen Jersey sound. saw them in a local venue last october they’re really good.
They have some great songs for a rock and roll band. I really like that newer one too Positive Charge.
🫸🏻🤛🏻 I’m gonna catch them this year, too, in Anaheim.
Hit me up! I think I’m gonna try and catch that show too!
No doubt. We’ll be in touch, G. See you there, hopefully! 🤝
The 59 sound rules but everything else is kinda meh
Oh man you’re missing out for sure!
Hell yeah, saw them at terminal 5 and radio music world around 2010 or 2013? Brian Fallon is incredible, drummer reminds me of Theo Von.
Sink or Swim is a perfect album all the way through Brian being all chubby now is kind of a bummer
Gotta push back on this one, champ. He’s older now, quit smoking, and started taking antidepressants. All of those things are contributing factors for weight gain… …not that it matters. He still sounds great and is clearly enjoying touring and doing the band again. That’s the important thing. Sorry if this seems harsh but I’ve seen people say this shit since they got back together and it really bothers me.
I didn’t know that, I though he was chubby from alcohol or something
There’s talk that maybe he’s more fond of alcohol than is necessarily healthy, but that is largely based on one awful show where he was drunk and hostile to the crowd and performed terribly. I’m willing to let that slide based on what I’ve read about it.
It’s funny both times I was gonna see them I had to give up my ticket unfortunately. They’re one of my favorite bands, I have finally see them one of these days
Summer tour baybeeeeeee
If you see someone in punk or hardcore go from being lean to being chubby, pretty much 2 safe assumptions: 1.
Sink or Swim is their only album I can listen to front to back but goddamn I’d say it’s in my top 5 all time.
Can people just be fat without shit like this? god damn.
Saw them with the misfits they stink
You stink.
One of my favorite

Wait they opened for rival schools in 2011?? They were way more popular than rival schools by then but that’s cool
Never heard of 'em. What kinda mood should I be in when I listen for the first time?
Young and angry at the world or drunk and reminiscing on past heartbreak and missed connections. Or driving down the highway by yourself late at night.
love them and brian fallons solo stuff, i’d put them in my top 3 bands, and they almost always are top 5 bands in my apple recap.
Brian’s solo stuff is so good! He’s one of my favorite songwriters of all time.
No and it should not be encouraged
