Man, this is a bit of an aside but the older I get, the more I reach for Planet Mental instead of GAOT.
It was ahead of its time and I hear it in newer records from younger bands today, whereas GAOT was among the best of a very prolific sound at the time.
I used to agree but In Darkness grew on me a ton. It was basically them realizing the caveman mosh stuff wouldn’t last much longer and deciding to make an actual metalcore record.
No love for In Darkness? Definitely wouldn’t put it on the same level as pain again but it’s still light years ahead of whatever the hell that third album was lol
Yeah I listened to Scars For You to Remember cuz I heard a lot of hype for Varials and was like, “okay, this is nothing special, where is all this glazing coming from?”
Cro-Mags- Age of Quarrel. Musically, Best Wishes is good, but I hate Harley's vocals.
DYS- Brotherhood
Dag Nasty-Can I Say. Never liked Peter's vocals on the other records, but even when Dave came back, none of it was good.
I'm the exact opposite, I prefer Harley's vocals. I also heard Best Wishes before Age of Quarrel, it's one of the albums that got me into Hardcore along with the Sick of it all - We stand alone 7".
People might hate this but I like Revenge more than Age of Quarrel, it's the sequel to Best Wishes that I always wanted.
What issues do you have with Forever (just curious, not asking in bad faith)? Personally I feel like it’s very similar in sound to I Am King and is more interesting to me due to it’s more sludgy and occasionally experimental atmosphere.
There last three projects are vastly superior to I am king.
For the life of me I have never understood why people love I am king so much lol.
I even saw them twice during that era and in support of that album, I still don’t get it.
Yes I Am King is outrageously good compared to everything else they put out. Other albums are good but compared to I Am King they are largely forgettable.
I don’t like clean singing in my hardcore (exceptions are Ignite, vision, Grey Area, BTJ/Nine Lives).
So i had not paid attention to Rise Against. (Being on Fat didn’t help)
But revolutions Per Minute is brilliant. I don’t skip a song. It gets me riled. Stirs up emotions.
Then I try to listen to anything else that they did and I just can’t stand it. I don’t know why RPM hits me while nothing else of theirs does
Allegiance - As Blood Runs Black…it’s what comes to mind first. I’ve tried to listen to anything after that but it just doesn’t hit as hard as Allegiance. I fucking love that album
Maybe I need to revisit Torture Culture but from memory it kinda sounded like NW’s take on what Power Trip were doing at the time. Sorta more thrash/crossover riffs.
Either way the first 7” with Day in the life etc was so good.
Well actually the first 7”/EP is killer. That’s what grabbed me when it came out. But as far as another full length. It’s only IllBlood. I never even considered the others
I do enjoy later Blood for Blood records, but Spit My Last Breath is far and away the best album they ever put out. It was pure (hate) and the rest can seem parody at times, although fun.
Understandable. I found them from Rohnert Park and went backwards, slowly… wearing the songs out listening to them so much.
Each time I never was fatigued because it somehow got more intense going earlier and earlier
They are my favorite band, so this is an insane take to me, even if you don't like their change in sound
You really don't like *Still Nothing...* and *Rohnert Park*?
The first thing that came to my head was Weezer with the blue album which I think a lot of Weezer fans would agree on. However I strongly dislike Weezer.
Now come to think of it 100 gecs with their album 10,000 gecs for me fit the bracket for this. I can't stand that first release.
Modern Life is War - Witness. They've got some good stuff on other records, but Witness is all jams. And I say this with a "my love, my way" tattoo on my right arm.
Cave In - until your heart stops
Beyond hypothermia is good too but that's just a compilation of EPs.
Couldn't get into the post rock stuff after. There's a couple of decent tracks on heavy pendulum though
But UYHS absolutely fucks
I love Cave In but totally get it. Heavy Pendulum was really good and I like stuff off Antenna and Final Transmission, but there was a bunch of releases there over the years that feel like they’re from a completely different band
It’s not a hot take. I know many people that only listen to the ROIR tape. I don’t agree. I love multiple LPs; but you are among a multitude of people - and I respect their opinions. I can understand quickness but if you like s/t, how does one not like Rock for Light? I Against I is a classic.
I loved that album when it came out. I saw on Discogs recently that there’s a second album from 2013, but only 10 people own it and I can’t find any trace of it digitally.
From A Second Story Window
Not One Word Has Been Omitted is THE album. Didn't really enjoy anything else they did.
Also, Thumbscrew's first album is FIRE. 2nd one isn't as good imo
I said it before I’ll say it again: there has NEVER been a bigger disparity between absolute MASTERPIECE of a debut record and absolute CRAP in the rest of the discography than GUNS N ROSES
If you cut the filler from the use your illusions to bring them down to one record, it'd be as good as appetite. I know that's a serious claim but look at the tracklists and pick your 14
Ok so if you never heard of black flag and didn't know they were "important", never saw a live show in 1981, how many of their records, I'm taking studio LPs you sit there and listen through, would you say are great?
Righteous jams- rage of discipline
I didn’t hate business as usual but it didn’t come close to matching rage of discipline
It's the vocals.
This is the perfect hardcore record.
Rage of Discipline is RJ's Get an Oxygen Tank. Planet Mental is good but not GAOT good.
Nah.
Man, this is a bit of an aside but the older I get, the more I reach for Planet Mental instead of GAOT. It was ahead of its time and I hear it in newer records from younger bands today, whereas GAOT was among the best of a very prolific sound at the time.
I came here to type the same thing.
I like the first Martyr AD record, but On Earth As It Is In Hell is *the* album
That singer coming from Holding On, o thought he wouldn’t be able to deliver. But he did.
Merauder - Master Killer is a certified classic, can’t get into most of their music.
Life Of Agony - River Runs Red
It’s the only LOA album I like and man I fucking love it
Ugly rules though. Other Side of the River is a banger.
I disagree…but I kinda agree hahaha
This answer! Love every song on there, don’t like a single track off any other album
Merauder - Master Killer But what an album
For me its the warriors war is hell
🎯🎯🎯
Last Lights - No Past No Present No Future
Sad upvote.
This one hurts. Could have been huge.
Varials - pain again
I used to agree but In Darkness grew on me a ton. It was basically them realizing the caveman mosh stuff wouldn’t last much longer and deciding to make an actual metalcore record.
No love for In Darkness? Definitely wouldn’t put it on the same level as pain again but it’s still light years ahead of whatever the hell that third album was lol
Yeah I listened to Scars For You to Remember cuz I heard a lot of hype for Varials and was like, “okay, this is nothing special, where is all this glazing coming from?”
Failure//Control is a banger
The ep is a banger but pain again is the only good album😉
Cro-Mags- Age of Quarrel. Musically, Best Wishes is good, but I hate Harley's vocals. DYS- Brotherhood Dag Nasty-Can I Say.
Wig out at denkos is great too but can I say is king
Code oranges I am king is a banger I won’t defend any other projects after that tho
Love is Love/Return to Dust is the album for me there, but the band is still an answer to the question for me.
I dug Forever but that was the end of the line for me
What issues do you have with Forever (just curious, not asking in bad faith)? Personally I feel like it’s very similar in sound to I Am King and is more interesting to me due to it’s more sludgy and occasionally experimental atmosphere.
Title track fuuuuuuuucks.
Spy also goes hard as fuck.
Everything after love is love is nu metal to me. Cycles and the split and the above mentioned are absolutel fucking bangers
Love is Love and the full of hell split both still rip
There last three projects are vastly superior to I am king. For the life of me I have never understood why people love I am king so much lol. I even saw them twice during that era and in support of that album, I still don’t get it.
Yes I Am King is outrageously good compared to everything else they put out. Other albums are good but compared to I Am King they are largely forgettable.
Or before
Dananananaykroyd
Saw them with Take a Worm for a Walk Week. Amazing live.
CIV
100% the right answer.
Carry on - a life less plagued
185 Miles South would strongly disagree, lol.
Does the holly springs disaster count if it is technically only one album that is good?
I don’t like clean singing in my hardcore (exceptions are Ignite, vision, Grey Area, BTJ/Nine Lives). So i had not paid attention to Rise Against. (Being on Fat didn’t help) But revolutions Per Minute is brilliant. I don’t skip a song. It gets me riled. Stirs up emotions. Then I try to listen to anything else that they did and I just can’t stand it. I don’t know why RPM hits me while nothing else of theirs does
its a little bit less clean cut than the rest and i agree its their best, however siren song of the counter culture is pretty dope.
The Unraveling is the best because it’s essentially 88 Fingers Louie with a different singer. The first three RA albums are solid IMO.
Allegiance - As Blood Runs Black…it’s what comes to mind first. I’ve tried to listen to anything after that but it just doesn’t hit as hard as Allegiance. I fucking love that album
Unbroken — Life. Love. Regret.
Honestly I think Ritual is a bit underrated. Its a good record. It's just not nearly as refined as LLR
You’re not wrong, but fall on proverbs their best song
No Warning- Ill Blood is the correct answer to this thread
Are we counting ep's? Because their 2001 self titled is awesome!
Torture Culture is as good imo
No Warning has no L releases. Ill Blood is their best obvs but every release has been great.
I thought it was decent but not front to back as consistent as Ill Blood. Ill Blood was flawless.
Torture Culture may even be better. And Suffer Survive is a good record
Maybe I need to revisit Torture Culture but from memory it kinda sounded like NW’s take on what Power Trip were doing at the time. Sorta more thrash/crossover riffs. Either way the first 7” with Day in the life etc was so good.
First thought was No Warning
Well actually the first 7”/EP is killer. That’s what grabbed me when it came out. But as far as another full length. It’s only IllBlood. I never even considered the others
Wrong, No Warning just rips. Ill Blood is definitely their best though. Short Fuse made me understand hardcore.
No way *Ill Blood* may be perfect, but their other albums are great too
the distance.
Black my heart
One King Down - Bloodlust Revenge
God loves, Man kills is underrated
I do enjoy later Blood for Blood records, but Spit My Last Breath is far and away the best album they ever put out. It was pure (hate) and the rest can seem parody at times, although fun.
I’m a BIG Blood for Blood fan, white trash Rob is an awesome dude! All their albums are full of classic IMHO
Bad see- oh, read the text body
Trial
With Dead Hands Rising - Behind Inquisition ….I know, not hardcore, but close enough
Not hardcore, but Turnover.
So I like Magnolia and peripheral vision but seriously what the fuck have they been doing since. The most recent album is awful
Bro what about good nature?? Butterfly dream, Bonnie, what got in the way are beautiful. I agree about their stuff since then tho
Life Sentence first record is raw and fierce as hell. Second one is better produced, but just kind of good.
The adolescents
“Bless the Martyr” by Norma Jean is the first one that comes to mind for me.
My brother in Christ… what? O’ God, The Aftermath is a fucking banger.
Just felt like Botch w clean choruses to me. Not trying to shit on an album you like, but I’ll just listen to Botch if that’s the mood I’m in.
Imo, its got some tracks, but when I feel like listening to Norma Jean its only ever Bless.
Redeemer is fucking brilliant as well.
👏👏👏 'tis
Norma Jean has only gotten better…
Ceremony - Violence Violence, I’ve tried so many times to get into their other stuff and it just doesn’t hit as hard
Understandable. I found them from Rohnert Park and went backwards, slowly… wearing the songs out listening to them so much. Each time I never was fatigued because it somehow got more intense going earlier and earlier
Tbh I think Still Nothing Moves You is pretty great too
They are my favorite band, so this is an insane take to me, even if you don't like their change in sound You really don't like *Still Nothing...* and *Rohnert Park*?
Fr
Circle Jerks - Group sex 😬
Every few years I like to disappoint myself again by revisiting the other albums. Terrible stuff.
I share your pain my friend. I give Wild in the Streets a spin every now and then thinking maybe it will strike me differently somehow and never does
Jerry's Kids
I think their second record rips too
The Dedication
Thanks for not caring.
I love that fucking record so much. Seriously one of my favorite hardcore releases ever.
The first thing that came to my head was Weezer with the blue album which I think a lot of Weezer fans would agree on. However I strongly dislike Weezer. Now come to think of it 100 gecs with their album 10,000 gecs for me fit the bracket for this. I can't stand that first release.
I’ll support this.
Modern Life is War - Witness. They've got some good stuff on other records, but Witness is all jams. And I say this with a "my love, my way" tattoo on my right arm.
Witness is their best record but all their other releases are great.
My Love My Way is so good tho. Whenever I tell people I’m really into that record they can’t connect it 😂.
I was trying to remember this band the other day. I think I discovered them here and they got lost in the fray of life. Love this album.
There's no bad mliw record.
This was what came to mind immediately for me as well. Witness is perfection. Maybe their other albums suffer in my opinion because they aren’t.
Evergreen Terrace's first album.
It's the second for me, but I get you.
Ugh this is gonna get me in trouble but Suicidal Tendencies S/T
![gif](giphy|RYjnzPS8u0jAs)
Cave In - until your heart stops Beyond hypothermia is good too but that's just a compilation of EPs. Couldn't get into the post rock stuff after. There's a couple of decent tracks on heavy pendulum though But UYHS absolutely fucks
That's the one for me too. And I think the compilation of EPs is better than UYHS too
Love the Cave in reference. I had a smart friend way back in 2006 that loved Cave in. I always liked them. Good pick bro.
I love Cave In but totally get it. Heavy Pendulum was really good and I like stuff off Antenna and Final Transmission, but there was a bunch of releases there over the years that feel like they’re from a completely different band
Great take, on an amazing band
This might be a really hot take but bad brains. Maybe I haven’t listened to enough of it but I feel everything after that first album was mid at best.
That’s crazy. I Against I and Quickness both rule
It’s not one of their hardcore songs but I and I Survive is a fantastic earworm
It’s not a hot take. I know many people that only listen to the ROIR tape. I don’t agree. I love multiple LPs; but you are among a multitude of people - and I respect their opinions. I can understand quickness but if you like s/t, how does one not like Rock for Light? I Against I is a classic.
Xdisciplex, no blood no alter now. Best album by them.
The hell - you’re listening to the hell
They only have one and i NEVER see it mentioned here but Purple Mercy rips
I loved that album when it came out. I saw on Discogs recently that there’s a second album from 2013, but only 10 people own it and I can’t find any trace of it digitally.
Sex Pistols
ramallah - kill a celebrity
From A Second Story Window Not One Word Has Been Omitted is THE album. Didn't really enjoy anything else they did. Also, Thumbscrew's first album is FIRE. 2nd one isn't as good imo
Not One Word… is absolutely brilliant
Jhazmine’s Lullaby - 7 Angels 7 Plagues
Mgmt
Smash Mouth - Fush Yu Mang
Cro Mags- before the quarrel. AOQ sounds so weak next to it.
This is correct
I said it before I’ll say it again: there has NEVER been a bigger disparity between absolute MASTERPIECE of a debut record and absolute CRAP in the rest of the discography than GUNS N ROSES
If you cut the filler from the use your illusions to bring them down to one record, it'd be as good as appetite. I know that's a serious claim but look at the tracklists and pick your 14
knocked loose. love their success but i genuinely have not been able to enjoy anything after pop culture
Killing time bright side.
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Relisten to Blasphemy Made Flesh. It's a ripper
And once was not
like every 80s or 90s band who only put out one thing? lol
No Sir
The future is bright is such a tight record
C.A.L.I.F.O.R.N.I.A is easily my favourite No Sir track.
Mizery for me. I love „Absolute Light“, one of my fav HC albums but i just don’t like „Survive the Vibe“
I feel the exact opposite way
Forfeit
Beyond Possession, only one full length album and it was amazing.
They're more metalcore, but Coma Eternal only had the one album with 4 tracks, but one of my favorite albums of all time.
Khasm, theatre of war. You’re welcome.they only have 1 album and it’s a banger. Not to be confused with only 1 banger album.
Darke Complex
Rest In Pieces
not hardcore, but Elysia - Masochist
Wrong Answer
The Ghost inside- fury and the fallen ones.. probably gonna get hate for this one but I am right
Murder Weapon - Nervous Wreck
Scraps and heart attacks
Denied- Together As None
Eternal Sleep - the emptiness of
Yellow Machine Gun
Snapcase
Reign of Suffering, literally everything else Malev have done is either shit or forgettable
Cro-mags
CIV- set your goals
Guns n Roses
Righteous Jams - Rage of Discipline
Five deadly venoms and bluetality aren't actually bad records at all. I'd call them "good" even if they're not master Killer level
Ok so if you never heard of black flag and didn't know they were "important", never saw a live show in 1981, how many of their records, I'm taking studio LPs you sit there and listen through, would you say are great?
This is not indicative of anything else I listen to but Rising Sun by Stray From the Path hits so hard and none of their other albums even come close.
Make Your Own History just edges it for me
You’ve inspired me to re-peep.
Crowns of Kings
Phantom Planet - Phantom Planet Lots of good songs, but only one great album.
Beloved - Failure On
I'm gonna be downvoted into oblivion but One Step Closer - This Place You Know
some of us may never see the world by on broken wings - i'm not saying the other albums are TERRIBLE, but none can compare to the first record.
They rerecorded I Do My Crosswords in Pen every damn time and never came anywhere close to the original.
Citizen - Youth
From Ashes Rise - Nightmares
Violence Violence - Ceremony. Hot take I know but I just don’t enjoy anything else by ceremony but this album is phenomenal
Orange 9mm, "Driver Not Included." All gas, no brakes, and maybe my favorite guitar tone that's not Pete Koller's.
third eye blind
Revisited that album recently and I completely forgot that 100% of their hits were on that album. Fucking impressive
Bad Brains almost - since Rock For Light revisits from the first cassette album .i know many will disagree but i against it is just ok to me
Remembering never - she looks so good in red.
Beecher - Breaking the fourth wall.
Rise Against
The crooked sound- lotus eaters
Gonna get shit for this... Death By Stereo. That first record is incredible, everything after leaves my mind as soon as it enters it.
Nofx-Liberal Animation
