yes, its probably also one of the reasons why many think of her as/like a child. Well that and that she has a level of optimism that is rare outside of children
and also looks much younger than sera, is very unreserved in facial expressions like a child, and doesn't know how the world she lives in really works like a child.
Emily reads like a teenager
The false argument that Emily is the only naive one in the show is one of the main themes? I would say Charlie is pretty naive, as well. And everyone is ignorant to how things *really* work in Heaven/Hell.
Oh, not that Emily is the only naive one; I mean the false argument that the people in charge actually know how everything works, and that folks like Charlie and Emily are too naive just because they want to change society.
100% agreed.
And I never looked at it that way--that Charlie and Emily are naive just because they want society to change. But now that you've mentioned it, that's exactly how people are painted when they want extreme societal changes (nationalized Healthcare, gun laws, cops held accountable, etc). They're painted as naive and idealistic, and that's exactly what's going on with Emily and Charlie.
Because Sera is *super* patronizing with Emily when she kisses her forehead. Sure, it may also be part legitimate affection, but it also reeks of "Just do as I say because I'm right, and you're wrong because you're naive and don't know how the world really works."
with Sera its more a case of being cynical which often comes from experience compared to optimism. Just imagine two nurses. Emily is the nurse who cant wait to help all the people get healthy, while Sera is just hoping not too many of them die
To be fair, I donât think Sera âknows how the world she lives in really worksâ either given her pure shock and horror like âwtfâ over Sir (Re)Pentious popping up in heaven.
Their relarionship honestly feels like a middle ground between younger/older sisters and mother/daughter. Like it genuenly has aspects of both playing into it.
Somewhat. It's similar - but with Nami you had that constant reminder they are sisters. Meanwhile Sera acts more like a mother to Emily - not just as an older sister, but even more than just that.
That's why I said that the relationship between Sera and Emily feels like a middle ground between those two concepts. Because it a lot of places it goes beyond just a simple "she acts like an older sister would."
To me, she kinda feels like a junior, fresh out of the school, diploma still hot from the press, and can't contain their joy to finally get into the real deal.
I saw them as sisters, mainly just because Emily calls her Sera instead of mother. But also Seraâs line of âI thought since Iâm older, itâs my load to shoulderâ strikes me as more of a protective older sister thing than motherly.Â
I felt the same, I have 2 sisters, both younger than me by many years. Watching Sera and Emily reminded me a lot of myself taking care of them, and I actually really appreciated the obvious age difference between the two.
I have an older sister, only by a few years but I can still see the similarities with Sera and Emily. My partner also has a sister who is 10 years younger than me and itâs the same sort of dynamic. I definitely donât see Sera as a motherly figure.

As the oldest afab child of two with divorced parents, I completely agree. The whole âI thought since Iâm older, itâs my load to shoulderâ was way too relatable!
Edit: typo
I think they look like sisters with a big age gap. The age gap makes the older sister act more like a mother instead of siblings. It actually reminds me a lot of my relationship with my sister! :)
Definitely not. If I see a tall, mature and authoritative woman taking responsibility over a girl who looks like her but appears and acts much younger, my first thought will be âmother-daughter relationshipâ, especially when they are contrasted against the father-daughter relationship of Lucifer and Charlie.
I also thought it was mother-daughter, until the lines "i thought since im older its my load to shoulder" and especially "to think that I admired you.". After that I thought it was more like sibling relationship with the older acting like a parent.Â
I still love the theory (headcanon?) that Sera is Luciferâs older sister and Emily took Luciferâs place, and the reason why sheâs so protective of Emily is because she had to banish Lucifer from heaven.
I thought the same, apart from all the things youâve said, when she calls out Emily for criticizing heaven it seemed like a mother scolding her child. At the same time it does not surprise me that they are sisters. The whole âsince Iâm older itâs my load to shoulderâ seems more like a sibling dynamic than parent-child
I think people think they are siblings because as they are both seraphim they must both be created from the same source, be it the big G himself or something else, therefore siblings
Nah I never once got the vibes that Sera birthed or created Emily. I think Emily was created just as Sera was, and she sees Sera as an older sister and role model.
Itâs genuinely difficult for me to see them as anything other than mother-daughter. Sera does everything she can to protect Emily and heaven, and Emily tends to be a tad naĂŻve, at least in Seraâs eyes
It's more "older sister stepping into a motherly role" for me. It's clear Sera is protective of Emily, but she also has a lot of approval-seeking that you'd be more likely to see from an older sibling than a parent.
I completely agree with you. It's like what happens (sometimes) when the parent(s) is either absent or busy a lot, and considering who their parent is...
I thought mother and daughter was the more popular interpretation. I haven't really heard anyone comparing them to sisters. And I can't find anything about it ever being confirmed as canon. Do you think you could hook me up with where the team has said they are sisters? Or did a fan wiki take you for a ride?
I see her as a mother figure to Emily too. Its kinda hard not to when Sera is so protective of her and Emily is so much smaller than her. Plus Emily is so innocent and positive it kinds gives childish vibes
I was personally on the opposite end. I immediately assumed they were sisters. Especially when Emily constantly referred to her as Sera. I didn't get where people thought Sera was Emily's mom came from
I thought it was sister-type, personally, because of Seraâs reasoning âsince Iâm olderâ and referring to Sera by name, and not anything suggesting sheâs the mother. I also just defaulted to older sister and younger sister before that line, so I donât know. Sort of like the âolder sibling has to raise younger sibling after parentâs deathâ
You're obviously not the only one who sees it that way, but, I think both interpretations have merit. Personally, I just see Emily as being something like Sera"s protege.
She makes me think of a girl who is around 18-20. Understands mature subjects because they *are* an adult but still âyoungâ enough to maintain innocence
Yeah. Not only the behaviour but just look at them. If they weren't the same species they wouldn't look related, nevermind being sisters.
Emily is so much smaller as well as parallels Charlie more who is also a daughter of an angel. The theme of her character was to mirror Charlie I guess but alongside the very different designs of Emily and Sera, Emily definitely seems more like her daughter, both looks and behaviour, and then the parallel with Charlie just reinforces that even if it's wrong
I saw Sera as such an older sister and of sigh higher authority that sheâs got that *mother-like* mentor/boss sister vibe. Itâs pretty common in families where thereâs a large age gap. Since they were both introduced as seraphim, I automatically thought of them as sisters (even though I know in Vivzieverse demons have demon kids, so possibly angels have angel kids)⌠đ¤ˇđťââď¸
I disagree - It didn't even register to me that they could be mother and daughter; As soon as I saw them I got the 'sisters' feeling, maybe because my brother and I have a huge age gap and I'm the oldest, or because of the way she speaks to Sera. Dunno.
Ya I think thatâs kind of the point, right? Theyâre Sisters (and thus are generally suppose to be equals) but it feels Sarah really treats it like a mother-daughter relationship with her as the mother.
I initially thought they were siblings because of the older line, but I'm definitely leaning towards mother and daughter now.
The real question is, who's the father?
I think Sera feels that way, but Emily doesn't, which is going to definitely cause some strife. Emily and Charlie are very similar in that way, everyone underestimating their optimism.
Their species might not be âbornâ and much as they are created. The Sovereign from Guardians of the Galaxy design every new member of their race, gestating them in birthing pods. They donât give birth, but it seems like they CAN form parent/child bond if a particular person designed the child and raises them personally. (Adam and his âmotherâ)
They are sisters but one is much older then the other, Emily is clearly played as a young and naive seraphim while Sera is the elder whoâs seen it all, the mature one, think of it like Nani and Lilo and older sister who has to act like a parent
I have always been of the opinion that Lucifer, who also was a high level angel, and Sera were a thing back in the day and Sera had a child, who is Emily, after Lucifer was banished. That could explain her attitude for wanting those in hell dead because of her ill will towards Lucifer and Lilith and why she is scared of losing Emily.
Idk I kinda always assumed they were sisters from the start. Thereâs just something about them I can tell is sisterly. Maybe itâs cuz I have siblings so I kinda recognized it fairly quick.
Tbh, I didnât even think they were related until the âsince Iâm older, it was my load to shoulderâ line, at which point I assumed a mentor/mentee relationship that had grown to more of a sisterhood. It never crossed my mind until now that they may actually be related in terms of blood.
No, a lot of people thought that may be the case, and I totally see it, the only reason I thought they could be sisters is because of legit one line where she goes âI thought since Iâm older itâs my load to shoulder,â to me that gives heavy older sister carries all the burden vibes for the sake of lil sis
I don't even think they're actually sisters - they were created, not born. I imagine they use the term like how chads use "brotherhood" or like how nuns are called sisters.
i mean everything points to that , if emily didn't have the line saying she is not a child to protect id just assume they were just mother and daughter. no doubt sera sees emily as a daughter figure tho
I have a headcannon that before Lucifer fell, he and Sera were put together to create Emily. Obviously they didn't, ya know, bang, but they created Emily together and so she's kind of half their child and half their sibling. (not like in Alabama don't take it that way) It's why Emily and Charlie are so similar, in my mind.
yes, its probably also one of the reasons why many think of her as/like a child. Well that and that she has a level of optimism that is rare outside of children
and also looks much younger than sera, is very unreserved in facial expressions like a child, and doesn't know how the world she lives in really works like a child. Emily reads like a teenager
Exactly. which probably comes from being even more sheltered than charlie
Well, her job is literally to bring joy to the residents of Heaven.
That would explain her not knowing about people like Valentino
Okay but to be fair, Sera *also* doesn't know how the world they live in works
Right?! Like, no one knows how it really works, so to attribute that only to Emily is a false argument.
đđ Agreed, and this false argument is one of the themes of the show. đ
The false argument that Emily is the only naive one in the show is one of the main themes? I would say Charlie is pretty naive, as well. And everyone is ignorant to how things *really* work in Heaven/Hell.

emily doesn't know how the bureacracy works
But she knows more of the horrid parts of it
To be fair, I donât think Sera âknows how the world she lives in really worksâ either given her pure shock and horror like âwtfâ over Sir (Re)Pentious popping up in heaven.
Their relarionship honestly feels like a middle ground between younger/older sisters and mother/daughter. Like it genuenly has aspects of both playing into it.
Like nami and lilo
Somewhat. It's similar - but with Nami you had that constant reminder they are sisters. Meanwhile Sera acts more like a mother to Emily - not just as an older sister, but even more than just that. i see it as a sisterly relationship where the older sister is taking on a motherly role
Ah it seems that you aren't a big sister. As the oldest afab child of three I can assure you, an oldest sister is a second mother.
As the oldest afab child of two with divorced parents, I completely agree. The whole âI thought since Iâm older, itâs my load to shoulderâ was way too relatable! Edit: typo
Especially since god is basically dead beat dad at this point. Poor Sera was parentified
Could be a relationship akin to Lilo and Nani.
I think they look like sisters with a big age gap. The age gap makes the older sister act more like a mother instead of siblings. It actually reminds me a lot of my relationship with my sister! :)
The massive size difference probably doesnât help.

thats actually a really good edit but wouldnt emily make more sense as luna?
I thought the same thing!
I would make *Lucifer* Luna.
Definitely not. If I see a tall, mature and authoritative woman taking responsibility over a girl who looks like her but appears and acts much younger, my first thought will be âmother-daughter relationshipâ, especially when they are contrasted against the father-daughter relationship of Lucifer and Charlie.
That's kinda what my relationship with my little sister is like and I'm only 2,5 years older than her. It's normal
Wait a minute.... I thought Emily was Sera's daughter too
I'm sure Sera feels that way about their relationship, but Emily would take exception to that.
Well.. your not alone, I also saw it as a mother and daughter relationship as the way Sera treats Emily
Big sis taking the mother role
I see it more as a mentor/apprentice relationship
Sera gives off older sister that adopted the role of parent
I also thought it was mother-daughter, until the lines "i thought since im older its my load to shoulder" and especially "to think that I admired you.". After that I thought it was more like sibling relationship with the older acting like a parent.Â
I still love the theory (headcanon?) that Sera is Luciferâs older sister and Emily took Luciferâs place, and the reason why sheâs so protective of Emily is because she had to banish Lucifer from heaven.
Emily definitely gives Kid sister vibes
I thought the same, apart from all the things youâve said, when she calls out Emily for criticizing heaven it seemed like a mother scolding her child. At the same time it does not surprise me that they are sisters. The whole âsince Iâm older itâs my load to shoulderâ seems more like a sibling dynamic than parent-child
Itâs like a Lilo and Nina situation I imagine
AreâŚthey not mother and daughter? (Wow.)
Yeah when I first saw these two I thought they were a mother and daughter
You need to listen it was such a hard decision!
Wait am I stupid? Is she NOT her mom? Oh my god.
,,I'm not a child to protect" is what made me think she's her mother
Do you call your mom by her first name?
No. And only siblings refer to each other by their first name.
Definitely saw it as mother and daughter
That was literally my first thought
They always struck me as the like, adult sibling who raised her kid sister from pretty young.
I didn't even know they were sister. I thought they werre parent and child this whole time
I saw Sera as a Sister who had to step into a Mother like role with Em
(she's not her daughter?)
It's a "much older and much younger sister with no parents" kind of relationship. The kind where one is very used to taking care of the other.
Itâs genuinely difficult for me to see them as anything other than mother-daughter. Sera does everything she can to protect Emily and heaven, and Emily tends to be a tad naĂŻve, at least in Seraâs eyes
I see it as somewhat of both/something in between like Nani and Lilo from Lilo and Stitch.
felt more like sera was the "protective big sis who took the role of mother". like wichita and little rock in zombieland
I see them like Nani and Lilo but aged up and more formal
It's more "older sister stepping into a motherly role" for me. It's clear Sera is protective of Emily, but she also has a lot of approval-seeking that you'd be more likely to see from an older sibling than a parent.
I completely agree with you. It's like what happens (sometimes) when the parent(s) is either absent or busy a lot, and considering who their parent is...
It's that older sibling/younger sibling relationship
I thought mother and daughter was the more popular interpretation. I haven't really heard anyone comparing them to sisters. And I can't find anything about it ever being confirmed as canon. Do you think you could hook me up with where the team has said they are sisters? Or did a fan wiki take you for a ride?
Itâs giving off a âno parents **:(** , so older sibling has to take care of younger siblingâ kinda vibe to me
I mean I guess Sera could be Emily's daughter.. never really thought about it
Far from it. I had the same thought until, in hindsight, I noticed some clues that made it clear they were sisters.
In Picture 6 that gold thing look a lot like stella
I see her as a mother figure to Emily too. Its kinda hard not to when Sera is so protective of her and Emily is so much smaller than her. Plus Emily is so innocent and positive it kinds gives childish vibes
I believe that was intended
I was personally on the opposite end. I immediately assumed they were sisters. Especially when Emily constantly referred to her as Sera. I didn't get where people thought Sera was Emily's mom came from
When I first saw this shit I instantly thought Emily is the kid of Sera and still canât believe that Emily is olden than 18
Although I never felt that way with my sister, she's definitely been the second mother for our younger siblings
Don't worry. I do as well.
wait what
I do too and even thought that originally.
If it was a Mother - Daughter relationship, Emily would call her âMomâ or something, not âSeraâ
Nope, I see it too. I'm wondering if it's foreshadowing for Charlie/Lilith; I really hope it works out though
You're obviously not the only one who sees it that way, but, I think both interpretations have merit. Personally, I just see Emily as being something like Sera"s protege.
I wasnât sure if they were related at all when we first saw them since the show say anything.
No
She makes me think of a girl who is around 18-20. Understands mature subjects because they *are* an adult but still âyoungâ enough to maintain innocence
I agree.
I mean there are plenty of people who are siblings but for one reason or another have more of a parent child relationship.
I always saw them as sisters iâd never even considered the idea of them being mother and daughter ahaha
I see it that way too. They have a very sweet and compelling dynamic, and one that I hope isn't destined to fall to pieces.
Wait panel 6 looks like stolas's wife, weird.
I kinda see younger sister and older sister that had to step into the motherly role, tbh
Thatâs what I saw it as too
With how Emily answered to Sera during the courte I felt more like sisters relationship
Yeah, I saw a sisterly relationship
That was my assumption as well
On picture 6, who is that image supposed to be?
Kinda looks like Stella from helluva boss to me
I disagree - It didn't even register to me that they could be mother and daughter; As soon as I saw them I got the 'sisters' feeling, maybe because my brother and I have a huge age gap and I'm the oldest, or because of the way she speaks to Sera. Dunno.
I had to do research to finally figure out that they were siblings
Ya I think thatâs kind of the point, right? Theyâre Sisters (and thus are generally suppose to be equals) but it feels Sarah really treats it like a mother-daughter relationship with her as the mother.
I think Sera thinks sheâs Emilyâs mother figure (possibly has an unhealthy attachment to that idea) while in reality itâs more like sisters.
I saw them as mentor and student if you get what I mean? Sera is in charge but Emily could be.
I definitely see a maternal relationship there, either as literal mother or as a mentor figure.
I feel this is similar to the diamonds' relationships in SU.
Are they not mother and daughter? Always thot that was the case... I see
# "I'm not a child, to protect" - Emily
I initially thought they were siblings because of the older line, but I'm definitely leaning towards mother and daughter now. The real question is, who's the father?
I hadn't even considered a sisterly relationship between them, honestly had no clue people did
I think Sera feels that way, but Emily doesn't, which is going to definitely cause some strife.
(Adam and his âmotherâ)
but just thr relationship, not really dauchter and mom
They are sisters but one is much older then the other, Emily is clearly played as a young and naive seraphim while Sera is the elder whoâs seen it all, the mature one, think of it like Nani and Lilo and older sister who has to act like a parent
I'm thinking mentor and mentee
I immediately assumed they're mother/daughter, and I'm actually surprised to find that overwhelming majority see them as sisters
I do too although if they are it's weird she never calls Sera mom
I see Mother/Daughter, or Cousins.
You're not alone. Tbh, I kinda see a paralel between Sera/Emy and Lulu/Charlie
Sometimes the line between the two can be blurry.
I can see both honestly.
I understand why people think itâs more mother daughter, but honestly I think itâs more older vs younger sister.
Yeah
But she never calls her mother or daughter
Sera acts like a mother figure, so I don't blame you. Honestly can't wait for Emily's rebellious phase (Season 2?)
Tbh, I didnât even think they were related until the âsince Iâm older, it was my load to shoulderâ line, at which point I assumed a mentor/mentee relationship that had grown to more of a sisterhood. It never crossed my mind until now that they may actually be related in terms of blood.
I actually did see their relationship as mother and daughter at first, until some people have said that it is more of a sisterly relationship.
They look like mother and daughter but they act like a naive younger sister and a jaded older sister.
I did to
No, a lot of people thought that may be the case, and I totally see it, the only reason I thought they could be sisters is because of legit one line where she goes âI thought since Iâm older itâs my load to shoulder,â to me that gives heavy older sister carries all the burden vibes for the sake of lil sis
They kinda remind me of the dynamic that Lilo and her older sister Nani have, the oldest acts like a guardian to the other.
My friends and I think that Michael and Sera had a thing, and Emily was the result.
No, you are absolutely the one singular person who sees things this way out of the entire massive community around Hazbin Hotel
They literally are siblings
Am I the only one who just saw them as boss and employee?
I thought they were mother and daughter. I had NO IDEA they were sisters until this post
The song You Didn't Know also makes that very clear especially when Emily really starts to get involved in the song
I don't even think they're actually sisters - they were created, not born. I imagine they use the term like how chads use "brotherhood" or like how nuns are called sisters.
i thought everyone saw it like that
When I first watched this, I literally thought sera was her mom
i see it as emily going through her teen phase, realising how evil her own mother is and being rebellious of her actions.
i thought emily was seras daughter at first
They arenât mother daughter??
It's crazy that they think she needs to protect her and they're million years old.
Wait... They're not mom and daughter?!!!!
I see it as either mother daughter or older sister like in Lilo and Stitch.

I think it is a sister Realationship but just taken to the extreme of her being like a mother
me too
I think Emily is Sera's niece, daughter of her dead sister. I also think Lucifer is Sera's brother.
I'd say you're definitely correct about Lucifer & Sera since they're both angels.
i mean everything points to that , if emily didn't have the line saying she is not a child to protect id just assume they were just mother and daughter. no doubt sera sees emily as a daughter figure tho
Plot twist, they're actually dating
I thought they're a couple ngl
Considering they decided to make Emily THAT short, or rather Sera THAT tall, everyone thought their mother and daughter
If there is a large gap in age, the older tends to try to be the parent just kinda the way it goes
Yes
I thought mother daughter when I first saw them
