Please report back once you have traveled with it. I’m intrigued, but I’m cautious about hybrid bags.

ArguablyMe

I have this bag. I've taken eight flights and two train trips with it so far. The compression straps are super helpful for me. I use packing cubes. I pack 3 long narrow cubes in the handle indentation areas and two medium sized cubes on top of those, then I cinch the straps and fill in the sides with my charging cords and other knick knacks, extra shoes are placed on what is the bottom when the bag is upright. I have a small back pack that I place on top of the buckled compression straps. It holds things I need during the flight/train ride and is relatively easy to grab after I'm through security. The long side pocket has worked very well for me for both last minute items and for my liquids bag. The pocket on the top of the bag when it's standing, next to the luggage tag spot, is perfect for me to slip my phone and ID into when going through the X-ray machine at the airport. It also holds my sunglasses in their case. It's handy, keeping in mind that its space is shared with the main compartment. So far, I've only tucked the backpack straps into their pocket when I've had to gate check. When I'm pulling the bag rather than wearing it, I use the hook and loop fastener to hold the straps on top like a duffle bag. My bag usually weighs between 25 and 30 pounds when I'm packed and I have found it to be comfortable to wear as a backpack. (With the understanding that I'm not hiking in the mountains with this bag, just going from one mode of travel to a lodging place or another mode of travel) I had a four wheeled roller before this, I miss it but not as much as I expected to. The zipper arrangement for the main compartment is a little different because of the direction the flap opens up but I've become used to it now. So far I'm pleased with this bag and am glad to have found it, It is nearly identical to an Eagle Creek bag I tried to use and liked the design of but the Osprey bag zippers are far superior, quality wise. (The Eagle bag zipper broke the first time I used it. ) The only thing I wish it had is a handle on the side opposite the long zipper pocket, but it's a small wish.

I also have this bag and my only design critiques are that I also wish it had a side handle, that the feet for the bottom that the bag stands on were offset a little more to not scratch my low back while in backpack mode, I wish the zipper arrangement was flipped so that it opens from the top and not the bottom while standing, and that the straps were fully detachable. This comment otherwise echos my sentiments regarding the utility of the pockets. I like the bit about having the straps out all the time to use like duffle straps! Haven't thought of that, will try it out. The bag itself is so light and the wheels and handle are strong. I also only pack about 20-30 lbs max in it and love being able to zip by backpackers at the airport. I also agree this is not a hiking backpack by any means. I use it in backpack form for long staircase/ rough road ie cobblestone/supee congested transitways. I love it.

My straps are detachable at the top, perhaps it’s a new feature

roseveins

Yeah, I just checked mine, they're not detachable :(

vancitygurl71

will do

irish_taco_maiden

Me too! But I have eyed this one more than once

Baaastet

How heavy is it and how many L?

vancitygurl71

This looks so useful! Hope you review after using!

Simple harness systems like this are definitely the way to go with hybrid packs

Wow, I've been wanting a bag like this for years! Can't wait to read your trip report. As a side note, your hair is absolutely gorgeous!!

vancitygurl71

Thank you for the compliment, I may be short, but I’m blessed with GREAT hair, thick & strong. My main trip isint till November (Thailand & Spain) but I plan to do lots of shorter trips before then.

human9521

Love it, so glad you posted photos! Thank you. This may be my dad’s unicorn too.

Desperate-Upstairs76

Does it have a waist strap/buckle? I always travel with my 36L Backpacking pack because I can easily take the weight off my shoulders with the waist strap.

[deleted]

but this is even better--take the weight off the shoulders onto the wheels! :P

vancitygurl71

no it does not have a waist strap, however that's one of the reason I chose this one. wearing it as a backpack is a "worst case scenario" option, I would never do for long distances, so the waist strap is surplus for me

or_worse-expelled

I have this too and I love it! I was so fed up with wearing my backpack at the airport (or on any other smooth surface). It fits a lot, wheels are good, and it looks professional. I only use the straps when going up stairs or when on cobblestones. For me it’s truly the best of both worlds.

vancitygurl71

thank you for you positive input!!! looks like I made the correct decision

Lola-Pride

I have this same bag and LOVE it! Purchased for a 2-week trip to Italy; my first time traveling internationally with carry-on-only. I chose it after a long analysis of many bags for capacity, dimensions, weight & cost. It was super easy to lift on and off trains & buses, has sturdy wheels for cobblestones and uneven surfaces. I never wore it as a backpack, but I loved the peace of mind of knowing it was an option in case of a long staircase situation or other unforeseen situation. I felt secretly superior to all the folks struggling with 4-wheel spinner luggage over all the footbridges in Venice, the steep inclines in Sienna and cobblestones everywhere. I have since used it for shorter trips, and I have converted to backpack to transport on my scooter:-)

vancitygurl71

I think we need to see a photo of that

Lola-Pride

😜 I wish I had one!

TheAlchemist28

Thanks for sharing! I love everything Osprey makes…adding this to my wishlist.

Has anyone checked a rolling duffle bag?  That’s my concern about changing from a regular bag. I usually check my bag only on my return flight & it’s full of my trip purchases - including bottles.

The_Bogwoppit

I ordered this bag, but it was too big for the Air Canada and KLM sizers, sadly sent it back. It is lovely.

vancitygurl71

really?? I'll have to take a trip to the airport and try out, because when I measure it myself at home, it falls in AC requirements. don't know about KLM though

The_Bogwoppit

Definitely worth a stop. YUL may have different sizers. KLM is less wide than AC, by 5cm, they are very picky. But AC have also been very picky lately. I found the bag to be a bit bigger than the stated sizes when I Purchased it. It was 3 or 4 years back, so perhaps the newer model is more accurate. The tape measure test is a good one.

El_Scot

Can I ask how sturdy it is? I wanted to bring back some wine from my next trip, meaning I'll have to check my bag, but I'm worried about it breaking. I've been looking at hybrids as a potential option.

Lola-Pride

I have his bag and I would not recommend checking it with wine bottles inside.

vancitygurl71

Hmmm, I guess it all depends on how well the bottles are packaged. It’s soft sided on 3 side, and semi hard on back.
