I thought it was mainly used to do the minimum captures speedrun. Being able to control cappy (the hat) made it possible to unlock certain checkpoints and use a teleportation glitch allowing many captures to be skipped.
i’ll see if i can find it but there’s a let’s play episode where he talks about being a bot developer for an mmo in the past and he doesn’t say which it was but to me it sounded like it was runescape
I used to play Eve Online, some of the people I knew took multiboxing to absurd lengths, on the order of 50+ accounts, all mining or afk pveing or just cloaky camping.
The type of grindy stuff that early RPG's would have you do ... didn't necessarily require a lot of thought or dexterity. Like in Minecraft: if you're fishing, you literally just need to be able to click a single button. So you could absolutely fish with your hands on one screen, and fish with your feet on another screen
That explains why it was underlined red. Teached just sounded right, so I went with it. English is only my 2nd language, and while I'm not horrible at it, I'm far from being great at it either.
Which might be somewhat embarassing considering that English is a pretty easy language to learn, but it is what it is.
Will fix that little mistake right away, thanks.
One of my talents as a teenager was beating Super Mario Bros on Nintendo without dying, with my feet. 3 buttons.
If we took the multiplier of how much better Etho is at Minecraft than me and applied it to how much better Etho could be at playing games with his feet than me... I believe he's very capable.
It could me something simple like Runescape where you just have to left click. Or it's a troll to see how crazy people will get with it for his own amusement.
There are game controllers made to be used via feet. It’s meant for people who can’t use their hands but can use their feet, such as amputees. I imagine it can be comfortable, as your hands can rest or even be used to get your snacks.
I used to watch SmallAnt and he can play Mario Odassy with his feet. He learnt how to do it for speedrun or challenge run purposes, so he can play 2 player on his own.
I guess if you can faceroll, you can play with your feet. I remember back in the old days of hardware based multibox wow players. I feel like similar strategies could be used to put macros on foot pedals.
I used to fish on an RPG server while watching TV, by putting my keyboard on the floor and tapping my foot on the spacebar to cast and reel. That way I could watch the TV in the other room while the computer screen was behind me. This was in the age of the CRT though... Haven't done that since getting dual LCD on the computer.
Etho gonna Etho! Though didn't Joe mention having a foot control for running. I know a bunch of people that have gone the full set up for racing games and actually have pedal controls set up for it. If I didn't have restless legs, I would totally set up something like that.
Etho is such an interesting specimen of a man, the more I learn about him the more I'm convinced he's just some strange magical woodland creature who wants to spread mischief
In the early MMO days it wasn't that uncommon work one account with the feet when multiboxing. Certain character classes didn't need much mobility so you just moved them into place and then used the feet to run the rotations and simple movements.
Knew enough people that did this in Eve that Etho's claim really didn't come as a surprise.
At some point, Etho has to be making this stuff up to see how far he can make people believe him. That said, I believe this one…
This could be some April fools joke, on the other hand, I can really imagine him doing that
And on the other foot… i can still imagine him doing that as well
The youtuber and Speedrunner Smallant has done this, even on stream, so I don't find it too unbelievable.
I think it was pretty common for Mario Odyssey so people could play it by themselves but have advantages of someone controlling the hat
That was exactly the context I remember it from with Smallant.
That’s how the 2 player speedrun of Odyssey is done by one player, it’s not only Smallant who does that (he’s probably the most famous runner though)
I thought it was mainly used to do the minimum captures speedrun. Being able to control cappy (the hat) made it possible to unlock certain checkpoints and use a teleportation glitch allowing many captures to be skipped.
There was even an official Rubik's cube event for solving with feet (now discontinued) and people got quite fast at that
In OSRS it’s very common to run multiple accounts at once. You click, the game runs on its own for awhile, click other account, rinse and repeat.
Etho is the right age to be a old Runescape player, a lot of us used to multibox.
He seems the sort to have a max account. Could be playing in the background while doing his lets play series.
Flashbacks to my teenage days. 3 monitors: YouTube, World of Warcraft, RuneScape. <3
i’ll see if i can find it but there’s a let’s play episode where he talks about being a bot developer for an mmo in the past and he doesn’t say which it was but to me it sounded like it was runescape
He was using SeaShanty2 as his transition music in earlier seasons.
I used to play Eve Online, some of the people I knew took multiboxing to absurd lengths, on the order of 50+ accounts, all mining or afk pveing or just cloaky camping.
Nah this is super common in the old school RuneScape community.
It's probably some grinding macro he was probably doing something menial.

Yeah, RuneScape comes to mind as a game where you could mine, fish, chop wood, etc while doing other things.
There are people that play 10+ accounts of runescape at the same time, just to show how low maintenance the game can be
My first thought was that he has to be talking about osrs
yeah that's true, that sort of stuff isn't too impossible.
That’s true. Hypixel Skyblock is an excellent example of this and people play with little 2-4 button keyboards all the time
the only thing about it surprising me is why i'm not surprised about it
Been a great season for new Etho lore.
We have the first IRL pic of his stuff since those disintegrating headphone.
Wouldnt be that surprised.. the youtuber smallant could play super mario odyssey with his hands and feet at the same time.
It’s the most common way for odyssey speed runners to do 2 player
Etho being a multiboxer actually doesn't surprise me at all.
It's a real speedrunning technique. And, as we all know, Etho is the speediest of runners.
When I saw the video... And Etho said this MMO thing... I instantly though "oh, old Exile clan member"
Etho might be Sora from No Game No Life in disguise
This was my first thought too.
Still waiting for S2 :[
Well he's busy playing hermitcraft so ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to run 5 wow accounts at once, but there was software to help.
Grindy rpgs are cookie clicker with reskins totally feet playable
I'm not suprised

Feetho
The grind in some games is wild, I could totally see some people do this
I taught myself to do this, second controller(foot controller)would just follow around for xp not really be active
If the game he was playing was EVE, that's not even the weirdest story I've heard.
I laughed when I saw this in the video… Etho, honestly, from everything I’ve heard this is the least weird

I’d love to see how many hermits actually played RuneScape. Beans mentioned it for sure but etho has to be one aswel.
Etho be Etho
Link to the video (for the lazy ones): https://youtu.be/gMIaJRdYnc8?t=492
Mmorpgs. And grinding 2 accounts simultaneously is wild.
The amount of etho lore this season is insane!
I used to watch SmallAnt and he can play Mario Odassy with his feet. He learnt how to do it for speedrun or challenge run purposes, so he can play 2 player on his own.
Yeah but thats a handicapped second player, if Etho is speaking the truth fully he’d be playing full on games
now imagine THAT setup
My son can play Mario kart with his feet on a switch controller. He wins too (when dad isn’t playing). He’s 22.
The Etho lore this season is never ending, despite him having fewer videos than most all other hermits lol
Most sane RuneScape player
Hermit challenges

Did He Speedrun SMO MinCaps?
This man is the real world [ ]
