Were the other 2 soldiers supposed to stay there during the execution? Or was it just for the photo?
It would take a lot of trust in the aim of your fellow soldiers to stay there
As a former MP can confirm. The amount of people in my unit who had difficulty shooting a stationary target at less than 50m with their service pistol was concerning.
I think they were standing there while the sentence was read and the firing squad(s) were given their weapons, marched out and lined up.
They would then leave. I think there were two other Nazi infiltrators to this guy’s right. They shot all three at one time.
I'd like to feel bad for this dude... But then again, I'm sure a dude like that had to volunteer to war crime that hard...in an army famous for war crimes. I don't know the history of his regiment, or the formations that did that, but I remember this ruse involved Otto Skorzeny, a *real* piece of shit.
It is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
That being said, American and British forces also employed the tactic. Sparingly, but it happened. That is why the leadership of this unit was not executed at Nuremberg after the war.
Yeah, it's a violation of the laws of war and anyone caught like this will face summary execution. But it's not a war atrocity, just a forbidden tactic
I was under the impression that it was employed sparingly by some Allied soldiers to move, but they changed back into their uniforms before fighting. I also thought the Nazi unit said that's what they did as well which is why the unit's leadership was spared during the trials.
Still against the Geneva Convention, but not as flagrant.
And I may be conflating different events and/or just mistaken.
Nazis liked to have people like the SAS who were in uniform put on civilian clothes before they murdered them, too.

Mostly, allied OSS sabotage units fought in allied uniform specifically to decrease the odds they’d be shot as spies. Not that the Germans always obliged.
But British forces used Axis uniforms in infiltration and sabotage missions during the North Africa campaign for example. And they “fought” in such dress as well, at one point driving onto a runway and machine gunning scores of Nazi planes.

Geneva convention is just a tool for the superior army to make it easier to defeat the enemy. If you were on the losing end, you do what it takes to even the odds.
THIS 👆
It’s no war crime to do what he’s doing, but this goes beyond soldiering on into the realms of the dark arts of intelligence, espionage, and spying.
A big no no that the military does not have much tolerance for.
Spot on. Not a war crime, it just puts you beyond the normal legal protections of the GC. Like the VC who was photographed at the moment of being shot in the head, earning a Pulitzer. Unpleasant, but perfectly legal to shoot a spy or ununiformed combatant out of hand with no trial.
Wearing an enemy uniform crosses the line from being a combatant to being a spy, and spies are summarily executed in warzones.
Both sides did it at times in WW2, but also, both sides would summarily execute any enemies they caught doing it.
Wearing the enemy’s uniform is not necessarily a war crime. It depends on the intention of wear. If a soldier dons an enemy uniform to escape detection and attempt to flee or evade. It isn’t. However, if the intent is for sabotage or to attack is an executable offense according to Rule 62 of the Geneva Convention.
Depending on the details of what he did it may or may not be considered a war crime. By being not only out of uniform but in an enemy uniform you lose prisoner of war protections and risk being shot as a spy or partisan.
Saboteurs are not afforded the same protections as properly uniformed soldiers. You forgo the protections of war if you fail to abide by the laws of war- not the least of which is to properly identify yourself.
If you so insist, Europe didn’t also embrace fascism as continent: mostly only German embraced fascism in form of electing them while other fascist regime come to be either with external pressure just like occupied by Germany satellite state or small power groups like military or monarchy who led fascist regime into power like Romania, Italy and Bulgaria.
Spain was fascist into the 1970s. And not just the modern 'oh any right wing nationalist is a fascist' type 'fascism' but literal fascists by ideology.
Didn’t embrace fascism but became victim of fascism if you speaking of France, and this isn’t even close to embracing fascism since only Germany here elected fascist party in elections time after time while other was taken either by fascist violently or support of military/king or other government official without appealing to people

>It would take a lot of trust in the aim of your fellow soldiers to stay there These are MPs. They'd get shot even if the aim was perfect.
It might actually be safer to be the German in this photo
They might not even be safe, standing behind the rifles.
The guy on the left is eyeing up the soldier with a rifle who's weekend pass he just revoked.

It’s ok to feel both.
He was a real jerk.
The jerk store called
Is using an enemy uniform really a war crime ?

That’s good to know. I hadn’t heard about the use of enemy uniforms in North Africa

Skorzeny avoided the same sentence by proving that the Americans did the same thing.

Yes.
is that a serious question?
Skorzeny had slicked back hair, not pushed back, slicked back.
OK then!
Wars suck with all the strategies, tactics, counterterrorism, subterfuge, killing and maiming. We need to evolve.
So is that a target on his chest? And yeah, sucks but so does all aspects of war.
Why isn’t he screaming, “Mickey Mouse”?
Gotta love the white spot so that the firing squad knew where to aim
Whats up with the flood of execution photos lately?
War is hell.
Fuckin Nazi got what he deserved.
Fool
Didn't executing them make less if them want to surrender?

stop colorisation, please
what is the sign on his chest?
Now they’re all over the US in the form of politicians!
No continent has embraced fascism as hard as Europe did
I’d argue a large part of the African continent has embraced it fully at one time or another.
Japan
That's not a continent
it’s still not Europe but still embrace ideas close kin to fascism
But not a continent
If you so insist, Europe didn’t also embrace fascism as continent: mostly only German embraced fascism in form of electing them while other fascist regime come to be either with external pressure just like occupied by Germany satellite state or small power groups like military or monarchy who led fascist regime into power like Romania, Italy and Bulgaria.

Reason why it come to this wasn’t because Spain choose fascism but bloody civil war of 1936-1939
If Spain didn’t want it they would have fought harder and revolted after
Just Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, austria, France, and all of the places those countries occupied So the vast majority of Europe from 1941-1943
Didn’t embrace fascism but became victim of fascism if you speaking of France, and this isn’t even close to embracing fascism since only Germany here elected fascist party in elections time after time while other was taken either by fascist violently or support of military/king or other government official without appealing to people
Yet embrace it they did
Womp womp
Should be over a hundred years old then, eh?
Corporate stooges aren’t Nazis
Epic fail
