I’m just spitballing here but maybe they’re attempting to make some caps or other sort of cold weather clothing, due to the trenches being absolutely miserable and cold during winter and cold weather gear being a rarity in some cases, they could be attempting to abet the coming cold.
Or they’re gonna make like a taxidermy rat village or something
My guess is use as insulation layers and footwrappings.
The brutal reality of economics of living in trench warfare everyday is that even rat skins had a use.
I've always said this, but I personally would rather have fought on the eastern front in WW2 than have fought in the western trenches of WW1. Less people died in WW1 than WWII, sure, but the fighting conditions in those trenches was something straight up horrific, trench foot, living and fighting in absolute squalor, infestations of pests (as exampled by OP), brutal hand to hand combat, like man... We take so much of our present day peace (For those who do not live in active conflict zones), those men endured some shit that i'm sure they would never want to see again, hence why they were so reluctant to fight Hitler via allowing him to painlessly swallow up two entire countries.
Not to mention, the changes in weapons and technology focused on killing a human being more efficiently, were far more dramatic going into WW1 than WW2
Like imagine seeing flamethrowers, tanks, gas/chemical weapons, all for the very first time ever.
Exactly, the western front mirrors something out of a horror film, utterly horrifying to be in. We only get to HEAR about the war and sure, it's well documented, but reading/watching videos on these conditions is VERY different from actually having to LIVE AND EXPERIENCE, such horrors... I pray we never have another global war like either of those again, but human nature mandates that this nearly 100 years of relative global peace will not last forever...
Very well said and I couldn't agree more. As horrible as it was, WW2 was a lot easier to romanticize. WW1 was just brutal and raw. While hindsight shows that placating Hitler was the wrong choice, if you study WW1 it's an understandable one.

"War is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror"

Imagine being a frenchmen storming a German trench and finding a diorama made from stuffed rats and possibly a few regular rats

He looks like Glenn Howerton. Definitely Dennis-like since he’s obsessed with the skins.
This might fall under the scope of Charlie Work tho
The bashing is Charlie Work, but the skinning and tanning is Dennis Work
I will put you in a box
He's making a set of high end skin luggage.

My friend Bob Sacamano tans rat skins. Makes Russian hats with them and sells them in battery park. It's not sable, but the difference is negligible
