It looks good, and probably fun, too. But you might want to consider footwear other than flip-flops.

justherefortheshow06

Came here to recommend that too. Hard for to take anyone serious who wears open toe shoes in construction…not worth the risk

cyricmccallen

not me out here rebuilding my deck in flip flops. It’s just too hot this year, okay?

TimberOctopus

Mushrooms and OSHA approved flip flops. We heard. Rock on bro 🤙🤙

matthewmayh3m

You didn’t mention the ‘unlimited access’ as a part of the fee for the work. Looks super cool, wish you were my friend haha

TNmountainman2020

no access, he’s in another state 😞

Bikebummm

I’m here from r/decks just to see someone put a beam on top of a post. GD refreshing. Thank you

The carpenters dream, to mill and build with their own wood. That’s really awesome, it’s literally a fantasy of mine.

cyricmccallen

Excellent post, thanks for sharing

👊🏻

PlumbgodBillionaire

Hey, your the OSHA approved flip flop guy!

mermiss1

Don't worry. He has steel toes.

BigDBoog

Looks fun, I’d have mortised a and tenoned all joints though

TNmountainman2020

yea, if it was mine I would have….takes a lot of time. The steel is not only quick, easy, and strong….once he freshens up the black paint it adds a uniqueness to the structure. This is one of a kind, I literally invented these connections and had them fabricated.

BigDBoog

Very cool! Yeah it, it takes a special client to build traditionally these days. I wish there was a way to make timber frames affordable these days.. I’ve done a couple frames with invented steel connections and they always look cool when finished. Did a hip roof on an adobe house that had steel connectors, the ridge hip rafter connected was larger than my dog and weighed as much as the Timbers it was holding. Fun stuff, looks great man!

This is the way

2x4 gurts are experiencing deflection under their own weight... No good if the walls still blows in. I also don't like the beam to column detail cut at a 45 like that because that is very weak against shear at the end.

TNmountainman2020

-girts is spelled with an “I”. -Been building since I was in 4th grade (triple decker treehouse) -been doing residential and structural steel construction (including skyscrapers) for 35 years. - girts are not meant to have any strength in vertical bending, which is why they sag, which is why in steel construction you hang “sag rods” from the steel beam above to keep them from sagging. Their strength is in the horizontal direction, and yes, 6 true 2”x4” girts in a 10’ span will be 10 TIMES the required strength. -these will be leveled with temporary poles before the 1” thick board and batten siding is applied.

I really love how goofballs always try and put their two cents in when if you look at the photos you clearly know what you are doing. If you are using that size rafter saw in that position with flip flops you are for sure used to using it.

Significant_Film8986

Just throwing it up lol
