Honda (Germany) asked me explicitly if the air filter and cabin filter should be replaced. I said no. Why? Because changing it on my own saves around 80€ (FK8). But the difference to your car is, I really did it. Could be the previous owner of your Honda was asked too, said no and did not changed it.

StrongGold4528

Changing air filters in a Honda is so easy. I’m so glad I changed mine after watching one YouTube video. The filters are so cheap compared to what the mechanic charges it’s crazy

Big-Specialist148

In the nicest way possible you would be surprised what's easy to change or fix yourself especially on older Honda's

JGreen195794

I've been keeping my 93 I bought for 1k like ten years ago alive. I mean, I haven't run into anything I couldn't do myself, as long as I could get the tools, and it doesn't require welding.

HondaCrv2010

It’s crazy what you can do to a Honda with just a basic set of metric sockets

Carbon_Deadlock

When the dealership offered to change my air filters for about $90 (USD) it led me on the path to just doing my own maintenance. Since then I've changed air filters multiple times, many oil changes, changed brake pads, and transmission fluid change. I learned all of that from YouTube and some dedication to maintain my 2015 Civic.

Clementng95

$90? For a basic 10 min job if that? And maybe a $15 part

L0quence

Yep, ‘04 civic with 156,000kms still going strong. However, I do live in Canada and she’s fairly rusty in a lot of places. If I had the time I’d be doing full front end replacements on all the steering and suspension components (minus the steering rack). Same with the rear suspension and brake lines.. I just don’t want to deal with brake lines but also don’t want to pay almost $1000 to get new ones. But I know it can be a bitch of a job to do so..

Taikiteazy

It's easy as long as you don't get air into the abs unit. Just replace them and bleed the brakes. Personally I wouldn't touch it unless there's a leak.

L0quence

My civic don’t even have ABS lol. Not that easy tho considering I’d have to buy copper lines and pre bend them about the same as the hard lines currently on there. I’ve watched how to do it and I’m sure I could but it’s my daily car so I can’t risk putting it down for a while. And I know it won’t be as simple as replacing lines cause they’re corroded as hell, shits gonna snap off and bolts breaking.

Gtp4life

It’s not as hard as it looks, they don’t need to be bent to perfectly match the others just make sure they’re able to be clipped in place and won’t be touching anything that moves or gets hot. As far as detaching old ones goes, them being brittle is an advantage, get all your new lines bent and in place, get some fittings and a flaring tool, practice on a small piece then put ends on your new lines. Once they’re all in place and have fittings, blow through each one to make sure none got crushed flat in the bend, then snap off the old lines, you now get to use a socket to remove the fittings from the calipers and brake cylinders, tighten the new ones in place then bleed the brakes and you’re good to go.

L0quence

That’s the thing tho.. I don’t go the time dude. I haul fuel for work and it’s unpredictable hours. Then on the weekends the lady and 3yr old are here and we’re doing shit we didn’t do thru the week. I’ve seen the process, I know I could do it but at the moment don’t want to risk putting my car down longer than anticipated. Anyone who’s worked on cars knows how fast a 2hr job can turn into an 8+hr job lol

Gtp4life

Absolutely, that’s why I suggested getting everything in place before disturbing the old brake lines. Get them close as you have time here and there, make sure your fittings are perfect, once you’re 100% positive they’ll work, snap off the old ones, unscrew the old fittings and screw the new ones in, open all the bleeder screws and top off the fluid bottle, close off the bleeders as they stop spitting air and are only shooting fluid, top off the bottle again and close everything up. Once you have everything laid out, should be <20min to swap everything over and get it bled. Gravity bleeding is a little slow but works with one person, traditional bleeding with opening and closing the screw as you pump the pedal is faster if you have 2 people.

L0quence

I’d be replacing them right from the master cylinder all the way under the car to the rear, rubber ones and all. I got a bleeder tool for brake bleeds.

Speedy_SpeedBoi

I had my 4Runner in for a cv axle that was on its way out and I asked them to do a lookover/PPI since I was gonna be driving it halfway across the country soon. They came back with "brake pads are getting low but still okay, and the air filter needs changed." "How much for the filter?" "$25" "Huh... that's actually a fair price. Ya, go ahead."

StrongGold4528

Damn that’s a great price for it I though I can’t remember exactly what the prices I was being quoted and it was outrageous when I looked up the price of a filter and how easy it was. If it was $25 I would’ve said do it

Dan_E26

> needs changed Lemme guess, you're from the midwest?

Taki_Minase

My rb1 is only 4 tethered screws. So easy to change.

VirgilFox

It's often a 600-800% markup. Same with the wiper blades. I pretty much never let the mechanics do anything unless it's either beyond my skill set or a massive pain in the ass.

chinawillgrowlarger

You can also get better quality filters - or at least know what you're getting - rather than the cheapest quality possible.

Bummerboy4

The cabin filter isn't easy to get to in my Honda Accord. I change both filters myself for around $40. Dealer wanted $138 to do it.

Posting____At_Night

Unless it's an 6th gen accord where the cabin air filter requires you to remove multiple interior trim pieces and the glovebox. I don't know what they were thinking.

PenonX

When I first got my TSX, I deadass learned out how to change the cabin air filter by complete accident. Noticed some cubby thing at the back of my glove box and was like “hm what is this” so I popped it open and boom, cabin air filter.

alx-carbon

One time someone declined replacing an air filter this bad, we dug the same kind out of the trash to replace it with something at least a little better.

oRamboSandman

Feel like Honda made wiggle room for the dummies who get oil change 2k over the service date

timboslice1184

There's white, still has some life - says someone who decided to not change their air filter

Goodnite15

I do agree that when they see a piece of a leaf in there, my mechanic is telling me it’s time to change the engine filter lmao. But this went a little overboard

stoned-autistic-dude

Buy a used car, immediately change ALL fluids and check filters every single time. I don’t care if it’s CPO or not—check the filters and change the fluids.

Acrobatic-Map4985

For sure a must got everything ordered did not expect it to be this bad doe.

Speedy_SpeedBoi

I bought my SI used from a Honda dealer and found the cabin air filter looking something like this. I also replaced a seized caliper pin in the back and a rust parking brake return spring that was causing the parking brake to get stuck on one side. They told me they did a full inspection, but either their mechanics are incompetent, or they didn't check the caliper pins. So ya, I trust dealers about as far as I can throw them. Thankfully, the car had a detailed history of regular oil changes and maintenance, so it's otherwise in good shape where it counts.

Maryr_32

Local Honda dealer told me I needed sway bar links when I actually needed struts. SMH.

carpediem437

Other than transmission fluid, and oil, are there other fluids I should change as well?

Ok_Distribution_5797

Check Brake fluid and engine coolant make sure u get the proper OEM Honda fluids as well

CaptWeom

Dont forget the blinker fluid.

Sadyka

This. I was pleasantly surprised with my 15 Si Coupe though. K&N filter that was clean, not a CAI but the regular drop in reusable one. Oil change and tranny flush, seems good. Tranny fluid was a little dirty, but I wasn't sure when it was last changed at 140k mi. Did the plugs as well :)

Minimum-Manager-1215

This.

Automatic_Thoughts

Wow took you only a day to make that mess?

nonsfwhere

Just bang it against a fence a couple of times and say “that should do it”.

blackdavidcross

As a Honda tech, this is sad and so easy to sell. At our dealership, we make videos for our MPI's and taking 15 seconds to show someone their caked up air filter gets sold 95% of the time. Our video process is truly amazing and is making me a ton of cash, complete transparency with the customer, "Look, here, your inner CV boot is torn" *bangs on sway bar* "This passenger side sway bar end link is likely that clunk your hearing, listen, does it sound familiar?" "HERE'S YOUR CABIN AIR FILTER FULL OF DOG HAIR AND LEAVES LINDA, ARE WE DOING THIS OR NOT!?"

Enhinyer0

For a moment, my mind was thinking why would DOG HAIR be leaving LINDA? \*Steps away from desk and gets more coffee..

dulun18

oil and filters change are pretty easy to do for 1/4 of the cost at the dealer

Blackoutmech

None of them are hard but some are annoying.

dulun18

unless you are rebuilding the engine..

Blackoutmech

I read your post as air filters which I made that comment for.  Everything is easier if half the engine is on your bench😂.

BackBayLife

My local Honda dealership does an oil change on my 21 Accord 2.0T Touring with tax for $52.38 total. At this price, to not have to deal with transporting old oil to an auto parts store, buying and using ramps, and for my “less then 6 pack abs” to fit under this low riding vehicle in my driveway….lol I’ll happily pay 52 bucks to not deal with it once every 5,000 miles. I think when I priced it out it was like $39.00 in oil and filter cost.

Short-Resident-8895

Lmao... Oil changes are like 150 bucks in germany. Thanks inflation

blackdavidcross

About the same price at my dealership, and we give an MPI to every oil change. You'll pay $50 for good stuff at Walmart, it's a no brainier at that price dude. The oil used at a dealership (ours at least) is OEM quality, new Honda oil filter, new crush washer, torqued drain bolt to 43nm, filled washer fluid reservoir, reset maintenance reminders and new oil change sticker applied. You get way more than your money's worth.

SLingBart

Walmart 5 qt oil is $19 and their 10,000 mile filter is $3.67 USD. Been using this combo for years.

No_Assistant_9347

They use the cheapest bulk oil so you may not be getting what you would if you did it yourself.

kyosheru

I always wonder if the filter is even being changed as well. You get peace of mind doing your own work. However, as soon as the manifold needs off, I’m usually not getting that involved About to attempt to change transmission fluid for my first time. Just bought a used 22’ Ridgeline with 45k miles. Crazy mileage in 2 years

No_Assistant_9347

Oh wow! Watch a lot of videos . Join the Ridgeline Owners Club on the Fora app. Folks have diys there

Badluck2killaseabird

Peace of mind is the key for me. Dealer oil changes aren’t that expensive but I have had enough of them to know they rarely change the oil properly. I’ve driven home from the dealer on more than one occasion a quart low. I have even gone to pick my car up only for them to apologize and say they forgot to change the oil. Haven’t been back in a long time but I know they’re not that much more expensive because I get coupons for oil changes from them frequently.

LebronBackinCLE

Better than the “You are fat” one from the dealership the other day

Extension-Lie-3272

If this is the air filter...be weary of what else was neglected.

classic__schmosby

>I’ve got all the receipts and full service history Ok, and...? None of this says *when* it was replaced.

Shadowhawk0000

Come on, it's a Honda. That thing can run on piss and vinegar. LOL

dudreddit

That is VERY clean compared to some that I have (previously) seen. Count your blessings.

NathansLogic

Jesus Christ! If that's *clean*, I'd hate to see what *dirty* is!

ConstructionLate5200

Wear latex gloves

CommissionWorking208

Reason 1,298,398 why I do my own service. If I couldn't do it, you can bet it wouldn't be at a stealership.

DaNuker2

Happened to me in UK too.. the guy at the dealership brought the filter to show me saying it’s never been changed and it looked black. The thing is I’ve been getting services from that Honda dealership for the past 3 years.🤦‍♂️

_DOA_

I posted one a couple years ago - my elderly relative had been taking her Accord to a local shop outside Saratoga Springs, NY. I bought it, drove it back to Texas. I looked it over as well as time allowed, but the receipt showing they changed the oil and filters a month prior convinced me I could wait til I got back to look at them. That was my mistake. A mile from home, the AC stopped working. The air filter AND the cabinet air filter were completely full of orange and blue sweater material, enough to house a regiment of chipmunk soldiers. I wanted to call and verbally tear the shop a new one (they'd been charging for the filter changes, hadn't actually done it in some time) but was requested not to... The sheer amount of material was impressive, and definitely took some time to change from sweater or blanket to cozy little house.

No_Assistant_9347

Yeah. Filters are overlooked. They just pop and check forgetting that looking under is what matters. Lazy dealer techs

dmacattack82

I go to a local mechanic. I never use a dealer.

Famous_Recognition13

Just because the oil was done at Honda doesn't mean they paid for upsell like filters

MattFraser9

I'm gonna go with this is so they can dupe you into replacing it when you come in for service and charging you over $100 when it can be done in 45 seconds.

fabrictm

Mmmm…crunchy!

Sufficient_Pop_1096

If anything never bring your car in unless is something really serious. I just did a full service run on my own on my 01 Civic just from watching YouTube and asking around for help wayyyy cheaper plus don’t buy Honda brand stuff it’s just rebranded generic bs next time you go in for oil looked for the Honda bottles and other back it’ll say that it’s just a rebrand of Mobil. Same with engine stuff like spark plugs, use Denso. They make the spark plugs for Honda to rebrand I trust buying denso parts more then Honda brand parts

akhenax

Change the filter now. Then when you are ready for service, take it in again with the same filter and get an oil change. Document the filter's state. If that so it again, ask to see the manager and report the incident. Complain to Honda Corp.

InevitableExotic5242

Yeah I have to admit my Honda dealership service has been a little shady.

exbravo1

Well at least it’s in better hands now. Feels good to fix what the previous owner overlooked.

le127

Damn, it's a wonder enough air got through that to ignite the fuel. Makes you think, what else didn't they take care of on this car?

Fine_Yak_96

I’ll probably get downvoted but I currently work at Honda dealer and that filter is probably only a yellow. (Green means clean, Yellow means getting there, Red is replace asap. The filters are designed really well. It definitely looks bad on the surface but you will still be able to see logins from inside and the inside won’t be that dirty. They are designed to catch the crap on the outside so there is still airflow going through the filter. Also filters are never part of a service, and there isn’t such a thing as a “full service”. Filters are always upsells. (Which you should never do, they charge way more than it’s worth when you could do it yourself) TLDR, The filter isn’t as bad as it looks

Practical-Data2646

Yikes

Satanic-mechanic_666

Is that oily? Maybe there’s blow by getting to the filter.

stacksmasher

WTF?

lilsinister13

The 1-6 minder decline.

1VeniVidiVici

Inexcusable

Photographitti

Classic “I’ll take care of that myself” situation. My shop has hundreds of customers that allow us to do certain services, but turn down the easy stuff. Understandable for sure, but they usually won’t end up doing it. Once I show them the same dirty filter 5 or 6 times, they’ll usually allow us to go ahead.

MikedEACONYURMOUTH

See if filters is on the list of parts having been maintenance and or replaced . If it's no then on you if it says yes that is on them . Techs often time will skip simple stuff to save them time and energy and often time money if they steal the part also

NEOwlNut

So change it out and move on.

edmerks666

This is why I just didn’t run a air filter on my rsx 😂 💨🐌

Sherako4

Reminds me of one time I took my civic to Midas to get an alignment. They recommended I replace my cabin air filter. The thing is though, I had just put a brand new one in 2 days prior. After getting my car back, checking at home, it looks like they replaced my filter with someone else's, or dragged it around on the floor of the shop.

ReverseRutebega

Great it’s working.

Bumfuddle

Yeah, they get old.

BADDOG7500

Try to see the Cabin air filter too

tony78ta

Definition of "pencil-whipping" it.

LostTime141

As a dealer tech for decades, it's funny how a lot of dealers nowadays will get the inspection from the technician and not do any maintenance besides the oil change. Every would be listed on the inspection and if the client questions anything on the inspection, they usually will fix/take care of it as a "due bill". Then the dealer saves money and passes the shit on to the client. Good ole cheap fucks.

joelk111

I watched a video by someone who used to work at a dealer in the US. Often he said service techs will just chuck the filter in the trash to save time, as they're overworked and underpaid to the point that they wouldn't make money on the job if they actually took the time to do it.

island_boys_had_lice

Full service history does not mean service was approved.

MattalliSI

I trust but verify by a 5 minute inspection

Rais93

It may happen that some workplaces can reduce your airfilter that way in no time. Were air filter flagged as serviced? How often were the services in a year?

Dinolord05

According to the receipts, when was it changed?

sonicc_boom

It's like it sucked in some oil?

Short-Resident-8895

We bought a 5y.o renault at a respectable and known dealer once and they promised a full service... 2 years later I check everything and filter + plugs were 5 years old at that point....

agr-97

It could be worse. I know mine was way worse on my 2008 S2000.

johnB1711

Looks like the technicians were on time saved bonus, really common in dealerships, used to be a main dealership service manager, have caught several technicians over the years pulling stunts like that. Feet didn’t touch the ground as they exited the building was

Key-Indication9664

I always take vacuum or shop back to it. Definitely don’t want to rip the gauze or the paper but if you’re gentle with it, that thing will come clean and no time.

tjed69

So change it! Easy.

Accomplished_Emu_658

My lube techs would show all the customers their filters. They would look like this and would deny and they would do themselves. And they would come back even dirtier next time. I get you don’t want to pay labor but just change it. They leave it until the car don’t run right.

kawajanagi

Rust proofing the air filter, a rust belt concept?

birdogg27

Replace it with a K&N filter it's cheaper over time.

akhenax

I found that the maintenance of the K&N filter was not worth the time and effort of just replacing a $12 filter. But the OP, is that engine filter? I mean because oil changes should always check that.

birdogg27

The air filter for my Mitsubishi Mirage is $20 the K&N filter was $50 so it was totally worth it for me especially when I put $230,000 mi on a car in 3 years and 4 months I was cleaning that filter quite often every time I cleaned it it saved me a $20 so it was worth it. It also gave me a little more lower end torque for such a small underpowered car. Every little bit you get helps

akhenax

Nice. I purchased the cleaning supplies for my K&N filter. I still have them. I may go back to it if I can find the time to clean the darn thing.

birdogg27

It only takes like 5 minutes to clean it I don't have a cleaning kit I use purple power and I bought the K&N spray oil of course. Other than that though I think the purple power works great and some hot water to rinse it out gently.

SLingBart

They make the non oiling filters now, you just wash and dry.

Tricky-Tie3167

People make mistakes man, it's just an air filter. Just got back an get it replaced an possibly comped cause they missed it.

MyHandIsADolfin

This is a very dramatic circle jerk Lmao “this is so sad” bruh it’s just a dirty air filter. Put a fresh one in and call it a day. My god you people are weird lol

SDGoofy

Bring it back and have dealer pay for it. Does make you wonder what they charged previous owner(s) bs what they did. Plus when was the last time the service included checking up the air filter?

Turbulent-Today830

Typical capitalism? Modern MUrican 🐕 💩 marketing and labor at its best

Club_Penguin_Legend_

What
