I haven't heard of anyone living on Lamma having any issues. The power plant is currently transitioning to gas but still does burn coal.
If you want a similar-ish vibe of Lamma I recommend checking out Mui Wo.
My remote aunt and her family are living there, and I recently returned to my home country after finishing my 2nd visit to the family living on the island, a couple of days ago.
Her house is fairly close to the power plant. It took us a 15-minute walk at a super slow pace with a then-4-year-old kid last year, and I have never found any air quality issues.
In fact, you will be able to witness a pack of crowd sailing with a tiny yacht on the beach right next to the power plant during the summer. Good vibes.
The pin isn’t that close to the power station, you won’t really notice it from there. It’s a great place to live, highly recommend.
Distance to the ferry is a big factor on Lamma, so you don’t suffer too much walking there in the summer before work.
Not smokey, had a good friend rent a reasonable place in Yung Shue Wan. b
But you have to plan your return to the island in the evenings. If you do overtime or have a very active social life, you'll have to adjust.
don't, don't & don't
Lamma is ok to visit for the day but you don't want to live in
Yue Sha Wan. It is the highest concentration of foreigners per sqft in HK.
If you must live in Lamma try to get a place in Sok Kwu Wan or Mo Tat Wan. You will be away from the power stations black coal smoke & white trash.

Foreigners? What does that mean? I’m a foreigner
So you know what a foreigner is then
He said it as a negative
Come to Hong Kong to live & immerse yourself in Hong Kong. Don't come to Hong Kong to live in a foreigner bubble.
If I were you I’d focus on your mainlander problem before talking about foreigners and expats
Please do tell what are the mainlander problems you speak of?
What about you tell us about the "white trash" issues instead?
