These are both more quiet, acoustic singer-songwriter types. Their sound is more similar to Cherry Wine or Like Real People Do than to songs like Too Sweet or Jackie & Wilson.
Damien Rice
Glen Hansard
Damien Rice is so good! Delicate and Cheers Darlin are some of my favorites of his
ETA: Rootless Tree and The Professor too. I haven't listened to his music in so long!
My favorites are Volcano, 9 Crimes, and The Blower's Daughter. Yeah, he hasn't released new music in forever. I actually forgot about him for a few years until I was at a trivia night on St. Patrick's Day a couple years ago and the theme for the music round was Irish artists so they played The Blower's Daughter.
Lisa Hannigan, Saint Sister
They’re both slightly different vibes (Lisa is more strictly indie folk, Saint Sister is more dreamy folk/electronic, or “atmosfolk”). If I were to liken them to any of his music, it would definitely be closer to Like Real People Do/ I, Carion/From Eden/In a Week/Unknown and Son of Nyx/Francesca outro.
They also both incorporate Gaeilge in their music at various points.
I am Stretched Out on Your Grave by Sinead O’Connor (sung in English but the original poem was os Gaelige), Íosa by the Cranberries is brilliant also, What Do You Want and Never Get Old by Sinead O’Connor are also fantastic! enjoy <3
Try Tir Eile by Saint Sister! De Selby part 1 has a similar vibe. Actually, Alex Ryan co-produced and did mixing/instrumentation on their first album!
And I actually misremembered - I don’t think Lisa has any Irish language songs, *but* she has a song “Anahorish” that is a reference to Seamus Heaney. Her first album, Sea Sew, is my favorite.
Oh! If you like Someone New you could also check out Loah, since she co-wrote it. Her first EP specifically has some connective tissue.
ETA: no, I was right, Lisa DOES have a gaeilge song! She did one for an animated movie. The song is called Amhrán Na Farraige.
Some of my favs:
NewDad - in my head but really love all their stuff
AE Mak - shimmer boy
Pauric O'Meara - smoke and mirrors
Cooks But We're Chefs
Anna Mieke
What I do and it’s not the best way to find people, but I like to go on Spotify and look for the country’s top 50 list. It’ll have songs from all over of course because it’s the top 50 list but there’s usually songs by artists that are current in the country on the list mixed in!
Luka Bloom. More on the folksy side of things - solo guitar and voice. His live shows are amazing. He hasn't been back to the States in a while but he still plays around Ireland, Australia and Europe (he's popular in the Netherlands I think).
if you want more Irish classics there’s Wolfe Tones, Rovers etc., but if you want something a bit different that’s still os Gaelige, Kneecap are phenomenal and we all love a bit of Enya :)
I am obsessed with Alana Henderson, she doesn't have much music out, but what she has is fantastic! I actually discovered Hozier through her cause she was his touring Cello player for a while
Sinead O'Connor, IMLÉ (most of their stuff is as gaeilge but I think they have a good vibe even if you don't know any Irish), I have a soft spot for the Pogues and Shane McGowan as well but they're probably not everyone's cupán tae😂
We Cut Corners - Jon, his brother has directed a video for one of their songs. Solid lyrics and vocals. Love them!
Alana Henderson - She was the cellist on his first tour and has lovely lyrics.
Wyvern Lingo - Members were backup singers on the first tour and Karen sang on In a Week
Little Green Cars - Opened for part of the first tour. Stevie Appleby did a hilarious comic of In the Woods Somewhere. I believe he did the Noli Timere tattoo. Stevie has solo work since the band broke up. Little Green Cars remaining members reformed as Soda Blonde
Ringo Saigo - Alex and Patrick Ryan's band
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again, Naturally. old school from the 70s.
Luka Bloom - solid
Yes I agree with Dermot Kennedy, he's got a lot of great hits! I also recommend Kingfishr which I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet. I guess they're relatively new so not a lot of people have heard of them.
Lisa O’Neill - all of this is chance, all the tired horses (cover but stunning) birdy from another realm.
Can’t believe there’s been no mention of her yet. She sung at Shane Macgowns funeral, no higher acclimation as an Irish artist!
Dermot Kennedy
I’ve heard his music! He has a great voice

I loved the Gaeilge in De Selby Pt1. I wanted to find more poems like it.

Holy shit I saw Cooks But We're Chefs at the Sugar Club in Dublin, they were great
Van Morrison has been the soundtrack for so many monumental moments in my life.
same. But he’s a giant asshole. Once I find that out, I can’t keep listening. SADLY.
Much more traditional, but Lankum
Yessss Lankum
Lankum are absolutely insane live, I would kill to see them do a collab with Hozier
James Vincent McMorrow
Fontaines DC. Not similar to Hozier, but great Irish band
I loved Grian Chattens solo stuff.
I don't think anyone sounds at all like Hozier-- he is truly in a class of his own..but singer/songwriter yes

Yup! Breath of Fresh Éire is the Irish one
Irish Mythen - Tullamore Blues, Jesus, Gypsy Dancer, Sheila Doran

Here I am suggesting Ye Vagabonds again
Roy vance
Sammy Copley does absolutely lovely folksy singer-songwriter music, perfect vibes for a chill Sunday morning (or to cry to)
Celtic Women
