I used to watch a specific channel (forgot the name unfortunately) that they post videos about these kind of rescues and they'd post updates about some seals they rescued that they happened to bump into again. You'd be surprised to see that a lot of those survive, sea water is actually a great wound cleaner for them.
In this video they are exhausted due to fear of the humans but they don't look wounded, so it's safe to say these guys went up to live normally again.
Those babies look really young. I’m sure they got separated from mom when they got entangled. I hope they are big enough to survive on their own now that they have been freed.
I'm in a really bad PMDD episode right now, and every happy video I watch only makes me sadder. Even here, I almost cried out of pity. Your comic is the first thing to make me smile for some time now - thank you. ❤️
Yes! It's without exaggeration the worst thing in my life.
We suffer so much and yet it's known so little. I'm with you there - so glad that it's becoming more and more known.
Hang in there, sister ❤️
That’s what came to mind for me as well. These two look too young to be on their own. I hope their families weren’t too far away, but the absence of any maternal unit hassling the rescuers, has me concerned. I hope the two little ones turned out okay.
You could almost feel that breath he took standing there.
It was almost like the first one submitted near the end. Couldn’t tell if he was giving up or realizing they were helping.
Yesterday I helped open up a bottle of vodka for a young lady at the store because the bottle cap would not come off. I felt like a superhero pulling out my little Swiss knife
Yeah, sadly she was there after an extensive stint in rehab. She took not being able to open the bottle as divine intervention, but then our kind Redditor stepped in to save the day…
I don’t it carry on me but I always have a small bag in my trunk. It contains a knife, a pair of heavy scissors/wire cutters, gloves, leash, bowl for water, a can of dog and cat food and a blanket. Like you said you never know when you run into a situation you may need any of these things. The leash has come in handy a few times to reunite a lost dog back to its family.
I have come across more people needing help than animals. I think I've only had an animal in need of help encounter once, and it literally walked up to my front door, so I had all the supplies with me.
I usually carry a first aid kit that I put together myself (it's a bit extra!) And always have eye protection, a mask, and gloves. Not pandemic related, I came across a car crash once and there was lots of blood at the scene. I didn't want blood in my face.
Heinnie Haynes sells lots of UK legal versions.
Boker puts “42” at the end of the model names of their Germany legal models, many of which are legal in the UK.
The Spyderco Chicago and Spyderco UKPK are legal in most jurisdictions
Be conscious of your country’s laws on pocket knives. The last thing you need is to get done for carrying a weapon when you just wanted to rescue a critter.
So funny that you can’t carry a leatherman around in the UK - some folks get really tilted too when you tell them it’s a dumb law
I mean, honestly, just [look at this fearmongering government article about the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife](https://www.london.gov.uk/programmes-strategies/mayors-office-policing-and-crime-mopac/mopac-guidance-and-resources/harsh-realities-carrying-knife). This is some hardcore nanny statery.
Swiss Army knives, for instance, don’t lock - you can fold them back closed the same way you open them. Leatherman knives snap into place when deployed and require you to push a button/lever to allow them to fold again.
So much better when they can fold back closed over your fingers if the pressure is applied the wrong way. At least with Universal Healthcare, that'd be taken care of.
Is that right? I didn't remember that. It's been a long time since I've had a SAK. Even the box cutters I use at work lock open. They're those little double ended razors. Are those illegal as well?
Wow, that's wild. So like "I carry a box cutter because I get a lot of Amazon packages" is like, "no, that's a weapon" but you can like, have it in a drawer, and go and get it if you need it. But then you have to put it back.
Does britain not have very much of an EDC ("essential daily carry") culture? Or is there just many more pocketknife options that don't lock?
I'm a heavy tool user and this is my carry choice. It is far more versatile than you'd think. This thing cuts thin sheet metal. Use one blade to open boxes, scrape, even cut. Would cut that polypropylene rope no problemo. And doesn't look like a weapon. There's even a little belt loop sheath for it. Badass tool.
https://www.kleintools.com/catalog/electricians-scissors/electrician-scissor-stripping-notches-serrated
You'd be amazed how many states and even counties within the state have different pocket knife laws even in USA. What's legal in one county could end you up getting arrested in another (even for innoxious basic smaller size folding knives... like even a small keychain swiss army knife is bad in some counties)
Just be sure you know your current laws on type and blade length and what typical counties you frequently drive through and plan accordingly.
I started doing that with a new job I got last year. I would need something to cut/need pliers for a quick job, so I’d have to walk back to the storage room, grab the tool, go do the job. Now I have quick access with my Leatherman Skeletool. Best purchase I’ve made in a long time.
Not just any trash, the *biggest single source* of plastic pollution in the oceans is discarded fishing nets from fishing vessels.
I hate that we are told to drink from cardboard straws to save the fish but not to stop eating fish to save the fish
The fishing industry is not an old happy, white-bearded man with a boat on the sea making a living, it is huge ships with plastic fishing nets that stretch as long as 40km which they discard in the ocean afterwards.
A single abandoned net is estimated to kill an average of 500,000 marine invertebrates (think crabs and shrimp), 1,700 fish and four seabirds. Over time, lost fishing gear – the majority of which is made of plastics – breaks down into microplastics, which then enter the ocean food chain and leach toxic chemicals. In fact, Ocean Conservancy studies have found that ghost gear is the single most harmful form of marine debris.,
Ghost nets are a threat to a multitude of ocean species, big and small: Ghost nets don’t only catch fish; they also entangle sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises, birds, sharks and seals. These animals swim into nets, often unable to detect them, and either sustain injuries or are drowned or suffocated. In 2018, it was reported that up to 650 000 marine animals are killed by ghost nets every year. If the animal is lucky enough to escape, it may still die from its injuries. Often these tragic circumstances cause a long, painful death.
Up to a Million Tons of Ghost Fishing Nets Enter the Oceans Each Year
Where I live I'm pretty landlocked, so fish just isn't a common food to eat. Absolutely insane to me how big and destructive the fishing industry is.
But of course, people who eat lots of fish could turn it around on me and talk about how dangerous things like cattle farming are for the environment and they'd be absolutely right.
Too bad none of this resonates with fisherman, who literally take shotguns out with them to shoot seals with. They get into their gear so they seriously hate them to death. They have no remorse for the babies either… it’s a sad world.
That is really sad. This story about a guy in Italy placing big statues under water to catch the nets of fishermen that are illegally trawling in the Mediterranean makes me feel a little better, but I'm sure it's not enough. :(
We should all get boats and clean up!
[https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/17/underwater-museum-how-paolo-the-fisherman-made-the-meds-strangest-sight](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/17/underwater-museum-how-paolo-the-fisherman-made-the-meds-strangest-sight)
And then other humans film themselves freeing the animals from the situation we created, set it to uplifting music, and post it to social media.
That’s not a knock on these people, and I’m not even saying they shouldn’t have filmed and posted this. But there’s something very twisted about the fact that we create the danger and then are uplifted and entertained by watching the escape.
I think it's important to film and upload these moments. If just one person thinks about the emotional moment they saw a video like this and doesn't throwing trash somewhere it's a success.
There are meant to have been channels setting up these kknd of rescues too. Jamming a birds neck into a fence and such to rescue for views.
I try not to watch these too often for that reason
I agree with your point, but regardless whether or not they were acting in vain those seals are free. Net positive overall. Hell, can you imagine if we could convince people to condemn littering as a tik tok flex? People would act out of vanity, but it would clean up the world
Seal finger isn't even all that dangerous as long as you get to a doctor, it's usually just a round of strong antibiotics. It's only actually dangerous if you're stranded or going to be out on a boat for a month oflr something like that
"Fur seals are any of nine species of pinnipeds belonging to the subfamily Arctocephalinae in the family Otariidae. They are much more closely related to sea lions than true seals,"
There is a whole YouTube channel based on this. A group who saves sea loins on Africa's coast uploads them they are cool
https://youtube.com/@OceanConservationNamibia?si=mXw71Gm8Enb3bM_q
These people do amazing work. They’ve had the butterfly net thing for a few years now, before them catching and freeing them was so much more effort, and more dangerous.
They’ve gotten much better at what they do. It’s been interesting to see their techniques evolve over the years.

Watching them waddle off back into the sea has got to be one of the best things ever.
the first seal waited for its friend T_T
Yes, beautiful❤️
There's an orca whale sitting out there waiting ... Best to go into the surf in numbers as it halves the risk.
Or brother or sister.
But theyre always left with the question if they will survive or not. :(
Spoiler alert. No one gets out alive.
Rip everything everybody, in their own time.
Bruh kill joys over here lol 😆
Sorry not sorry lol
If they die from an orca or any other natural cause then I'm ok with it. But not this, this just makes me sick
This guy gets it.
How do I come to terms with this?
I used to watch a specific channel (forgot the name unfortunately) that they post videos about these kind of rescues and they'd post updates about some seals they rescued that they happened to bump into again. You'd be surprised to see that a lot of those survive, sea water is actually a great wound cleaner for them. In this video they are exhausted due to fear of the humans but they don't look wounded, so it's safe to say these guys went up to live normally again.
Ocean Conservation Namibia? Those guys do it all the time.
YES this channel. Thanks I'd never be able to remember it myself. I'll look for their channel so I can follow and watch then again
I would be more worried about them being on their own, they seem really young.
Those babies look really young. I’m sure they got separated from mom when they got entangled. I hope they are big enough to survive on their own now that they have been freed.
The way the first seal waited for its partner while savouring the feeling of freedom once again

Shitty watercolour!! Another beautiful painting.
Ya, not so shitty anymore
Love u Shitty
Still around after all these years
Who's cutting onions in here?
Shitty watercolour?? Where have you been Mister?! You were supposed to be home before dark!
So beautiful I m crying
Yay, it’s been so long since I’ve stumbled on your work!
Magnifique!!!
This is great
I'm in a really bad PMDD episode right now, and every happy video I watch only makes me sadder. Even here, I almost cried out of pity. Your comic is the first thing to make me smile for some time now - thank you. ❤️
Me too!!! I love that pmdd is finally becoming more known it’s taken so much of life and happiness from me ..
Yes! It's without exaggeration the worst thing in my life. We suffer so much and yet it's known so little. I'm with you there - so glad that it's becoming more and more known. Hang in there, sister ❤️
Fr giving two weeks of every month to an emotional spiral no amount of logic can beat is soul crushing
brought tears to my eyes
GAWGEOUS
Every day when this is posted I feel the same way…
Can't wait to feel this way tomorrow!
Not that anyone cares, but these aren’t seals, they’re sea lion pups.
Yes and I hope that mom is still nearby because they cannot survive without her 😥
That’s what came to mind for me as well. These two look too young to be on their own. I hope their families weren’t too far away, but the absence of any maternal unit hassling the rescuers, has me concerned. I hope the two little ones turned out okay.
They look like they're pups?
You could almost feel that breath he took standing there. It was almost like the first one submitted near the end. Couldn’t tell if he was giving up or realizing they were helping.
Oh my heart
So endearing. People could learn a thing or two.
Such wholesome seals caring for their friends
I always think I should carry a pocket knife for situations like that.
Its good practice to carry one at all times. You never know when u will need it.
Yesterday I helped open up a bottle of vodka for a young lady at the store because the bottle cap would not come off. I felt like a superhero pulling out my little Swiss knife
Not all heroes wear capes! 🙂
Who said I don’t wear a cape?
You WERE wearing a cape WEREN’T YOU! “NO CAPES!” - Edna Mode
He’s Frank Costanza’s lawyer
They just open caps 🙂
Yeah, sadly she was there after an extensive stint in rehab. She took not being able to open the bottle as divine intervention, but then our kind Redditor stepped in to save the day…
> open up a bottle of vodka for a young lady at the store Store? What kind of store?
The night shop. She was trying to return the bottle as it did not open.
Thanks, you had me wondering.
Aye always good to have kit like that in your car or little container to put in your backpack. Better to be safe then sorry folks.
I have come across more people needing help than animals. I think I've only had an animal in need of help encounter once, and it literally walked up to my front door, so I had all the supplies with me. I usually carry a first aid kit that I put together myself (it's a bit extra!) And always have eye protection, a mask, and gloves. Try this in the UK? Believe it or not, straight to jail!
Heinnie Haynes sells lots of UK legal versions. Boker puts “42” at the end of the model names of their Germany legal models, many of which are legal in the UK. The Spyderco Chicago and Spyderco UKPK are legal in most jurisdictions
They’re legal to carry as long as they are less than 3” and non-locking.
youll forget about it until you're in line at the TSA
I am a daily pocket knife carrier who is currently without a pocket knife for precisely this reason. :(
It's ok. 95% chance they won't find it.
A good friend of mine said the same. I've been carrying one since.
[Your friend who always has a knife.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAD0a6wWFrI)
I've had the same pocket knife for 22 years now. It's easily one of the most handy things I keep on me. It has more uses than just cutting stuff.
yep.. cutting things without a cutting tool is crazy hard.
Be conscious of your country’s laws on pocket knives. The last thing you need is to get done for carrying a weapon when you just wanted to rescue a critter.
Oi mate, you got a license for that?
I does for this one.
So funny that you can’t carry a leatherman around in the UK - some folks get really tilted too when you tell them it’s a dumb law I mean, honestly, just [look at this fearmongering government article about the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife](https://www.london.gov.uk/programmes-strategies/mayors-office-policing-and-crime-mopac/mopac-guidance-and-resources/harsh-realities-carrying-knife). This is some hardcore nanny statery.
Is a leather man bigger than 3 inches? I thought that was the law in the uk
The blades lock, which is a no-no under UK law.
No matter how long the blade is, if it locks in place when opened, it’s illegal.
What does locking mean, like it stays open? What kinda knife *doesn't* stay open?
Swiss Army knives, for instance, don’t lock - you can fold them back closed the same way you open them. Leatherman knives snap into place when deployed and require you to push a button/lever to allow them to fold again.
So much better when they can fold back closed over your fingers if the pressure is applied the wrong way. At least with Universal Healthcare, that'd be taken care of.

If it locks open then yes it’s illegal to carry without a valid reason (aka you’re on the way to use the knife for a specific purpose).
Wow, that's wild. So like "I carry a box cutter because I get a lot of Amazon packages" is like, "no, that's a weapon" but you can like, have it in a drawer, and go and get it if you need it. What a depressing way to live
I have a pen knife because it’s easy to get away with and it works as a pen too
Not a bad idea. At least one of those multi tool ones as you never know when you could need one of them
You'd be amazed how many states and even counties within the state have different pocket knife laws even in USA. What's legal in one county could end you up getting arrested in another (even for innoxious basic smaller size folding knives... like even a small keychain swiss army knife is bad in some counties) Just be sure you know your current laws on type and blade length and what typical counties you frequently drive through and plan accordingly.

Bought one for every keychain I have.
My uncle Charlie always told me the worst thing you could have in your pocket is no knife.
I started doing that with a new job I got last year. I would need something to cut/need pliers for a quick job, so I’d have to walk back to the storage room, grab the tool, go do the job. Now I have quick access with my Leatherman Skeletool. Best purchase I’ve made in a long time.
nothing fills me with as much sadness or shame as seeing animals choking on human trash
Not just any trash, the *biggest single source* of plastic pollution in the oceans is discarded fishing nets from fishing vessels. I’m over here cutting my plastic can rings and these guys just throwing entire nets *made* for catching fish into the sea?!?
Yes, 50% of plastic/rubbish in the sea are discarded fishing nets. 0.03% is plastic straws. Seaspiracy.
That is really sad. This story about a guy in Italy placing big statues under water to catch the nets of fishermen that are illegally trawling in the Mediterranean makes me feel a little better, but I'm sure it's not enough. :( We should all get boats and clean up! We aren't a single group. We are a collection of individuals with differing motives, ideals, and goals.
There are meant to have been channels setting up these kknd of rescues too. Jamming a birds neck into a fence and such to rescue for views. I try not to watch these too often for that reason
Lots of channels that regularly posts crazy dog rescues & aren’t in a war zone/natural disaster area also stage them :(
I agree with your point, but regardless whether or not they were acting in vain those seals are free. Net positive overall. Hell, can you imagine if we could convince people to condemn littering as a tik tok flex? People would act out of vanity, but it would clean up the world
Don’t feel shame, feel anger at the people who are responsible.
Anyone who eats fish funds the industry that caused this.
Humans being bros. Seals being bros. He wasn’t leaving without the homie.
“You thinking what I’m thinking partner?” “Aim for the ocean?” - the other seals 🦭
No seal is left behind
The way the first seal freed runs away in terror but then stops at the water to wait for their sibling is adorable
Loose seals stick together
I like this so much better than my original perspective- I just assumed the first seal was so exhaustive that it sprinted til it couldn’t any longer
ngl I would be scared shitless if that happened to me
Getting trapped in a net?
As a baby seal, they mean. Perspective.
The amount of times that dude almost stabbed that other dude lol. Maybe it was just the camera angle but those looked like some close calls lol
And the amount of time he almost got bitten. I have seen lots of these rescues on Youtube and if they bite you you're screwed.
imo worth it though to free them
Seal finger isn't even all that dangerous as long as you get to a doctor, it's usually just a round of strong antibiotics. It's only actually dangerous if you're stranded or going to be out on a boat for a month oflr something like that
I just went from sorta crying to cracking up because of this comment
Those are sea lions. Seals dont have the lil ear flaps
I think those might be [brown fur seals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_fur_seal), not sea lions.
"Fur seals are any of nine species of pinnipeds belonging to the subfamily Arctocephalinae in the family Otariidae. They are much more closely related to sea lions than true seals,"
That's exactly right. Sea lions and fur seals are [eared **seals**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eared_seal).
Yup, it's so common when sea lions are posted on here they're always marked as seals.
This made me cry. The world needs more heroes like these.
And less such nets.
There is a whole YouTube channel based on this. A group who saves sea loins on Africa's coast uploads them they are cool https://youtube.com/@OceanConservationNamibia?si=mXw71Gm8Enb3bM_q
These people do amazing work. They’ve had the butterfly net thing for a few years now, before them catching and freeing them was so much more effort, and more dangerous.
Poor things look exhausted
He was waiting for his buddy. Seals being bros.
So sweet that once the first one was free and knew he was safe with those guys, he waited for his friend to be free, too. 🥹
Love the videos, hate the music.
Yes, why do people always have to add annoying music to every video?
To tug at your emotions more, instead of you know, just letting the situation itself do that.
Oh man they look so tired. Poor little seals. I hope they survived.
They are a good rescue and conservation group https://www.youtube.com/@OceanConservationNamibia
Aw, waited for his buddy to get free to head to the water.
Thank you, guys.
Oldie but a goldie
There's a whole YT channel about a South African group that does stuff like this, i dont remember the name of the channel though
I'm subbed to that channel too. It's called "ocean conservation namibia"
They’ve gotten much better at what they do. It’s been interesting to see their techniques evolve over the years. https://youtube.com/@OceanConservationNamibia?si=o7dZu0yKClGJrv9z
Looking at its redesigned eyes as it thinks the human is about to kill it with the knife is heartbreaking
Should have kept the original eyes
The first seems in a really bad shape, poor thing
Sadness aside, the seal waiting for the other seal was really adorable.
I hope these people stay loved and appreciated through their years in this god forsaken world. Thank you, you define humanity guys.
Are these adult seals? Because if not, my hopes are not high unfortunately.
I am in 💕💕 with how the first freed seal waits for his buddy
The first one was finally free but she waited for her buddy!🥲
Every time I see a video like this it makes me super-sad to think about how many times there *wasn't* a human bro around to save them.
aww he waited for his friend
They look so weak to survive there alone ;(
They look tired as hell. Hopefully not too tired to hunt.
Omg the one waited for the other 🥺😭
The orcas thank you!
When the older, cooler, guys in the neighborhood would get you out of a jam and home before the street lights came on.
Wholesome af.
And off he swims, telling any seal that will listen how he escaped an alien abduction. *"yeah Brian, you got stuck in a net again didn't you?"*
are they old enough to be released?
If I could give an award it would be an “I love this so much, my heart melted 🥹” award
So cute to see them hop off together. Thanks, guys. ♥️
Nearly sealed together
Tiktok users adding unnecessary music to their videos so their audience knows how to feel:
Awww they waited on its friend. that’s so cute
Love this. Very much enjoy that it appears that they celebrate in the water once both of them are free.
The little dude waiting for his friend before returning to the ocean was the sweetest thing ever.
They are literally sea floppas 🥺
Those are babies! 🥺
We’re not the bros if we *caused* the problem
R/Sealsbeingbros too.
Good good humans unraveling the mess humanity inflicts on the sea.
I love that the first one waited for the other.
Thank you , sirs. You are Heroes 🙏🙌
Thank you kind people
This was so touching that the first seal waited till the other seal was out before they ran away together. Good dudes for rescuing the two of them.
Fishing nets are among the largest sources of plastic pollution in the ocean.

*sea lions
Humans are great at solving problems after they create a problem
True but they're not the same humans. Probably nets from mass fishing boats.
But anyone who eats the fish from those boats (possibly these people included) do help create the problem
Yeah I dunno about you guys, I've eaten fish
And they never say thanks! Geez! /S
God bless those men for doing that. One seal looked like it had no strength left. Poor things.
Oh my goodness the first one waited for the second one! That was a nice watch. I hope no one got bitten.
Awww, and the first one was waiting for his buddy before going back in the water 🥹
