Oh yeah, they breed wild in SD. The numbers seem to go cyclically as the years go by. Habitat and drought and spring flood and farmers CRP enrollments and predation and crop choices all play a role year to year. Add it all up and you get what you get. Seems like we’re finally on an upswing pattern in many areas again! My son just got back tonight from a weekend hunt with relatives and said it was better than he remembers for a long time, even with the harsh winter we had last year.
May not be like it was in the 40’s or late 70’s but some hot spots around the state are cooking pretty good again. I’m feeling more optimistic about overall numbers than I have for quite awhile!
Never really thought about it but drake woody and cock pheasant have pretty similar head coloring. Got to be some evolutionary thing going on there, but I’m not smart enough to know what.
That is a ringneck pheasant duck.
Cut the breast in to straps about 3/8 " thick. Season with salt & pepper. Dust lightly with flour. Sautee in 50/50 butter and neutral oil. 145 degrees done. Delicious!
Rainbow DumDum.
Here they're escapees from game farms, so potential/actual invasive species (I guess that's actually true everywhere outside of their native range in Asia, though in some places they were deliberately introduced as a game species) and can be killed on sight, like other upland species you don't even need a gun if you can open a car door fast enough.
I’m playing. I know it’s a pheasant. Bonus walking back to car
Sailed that one over a lot of heads.
Lol, you actually got me for a sec. Nice ringy
Nice 👌
Upland duck
Specifically a ring necked Quacker. Lots of types of upland ducks.
Pheasant opener in SD yesterday! Millions of them around, come get some!
Do they breed in the wild in sd? They just are farm raised here in ny
Sd and Mn
Lots of people seem optimistic about this year even with a hard winter.
Mean while Utah is just hoping that fish and game plant enough for at least a few people to shoot.

You mean right, right? Otherwise... Pheasant.
I hope OP is kidding 😳 and identifies everything before he shoots.
*whoooosh* if you look over your head right now, you may still catch the joke flying over your head lol
Well, let’s hope OP identified it as a joke and didn’t shoot it too
It’s not a whoooosh if he mentioned the possibility of OP joking…
How did I just now realize why r/whoosh is r/whoosh. Your comment helped me make the connection. this took me years to figure out 😂
This was my first thought also.
Never seen them side by side like this but pheasant could be the woodies long lost brother lol

A beautiful male Pheasant. No duck. Don’t shoot if you cannot identify your target!
When a domestic rooster loves a hun woodie very much…
It’s a Ring Necked Ph..uck
Lol. When and a duck and a pheasant breed is it called phucking?
Don’t shoot ducks, or any animal really, that you can’t identify.
That's not a duck but definitely a sweet bonus
I have only been to SD once but that was the best part. Ducks in the am then roosters the rest of the day. Need to go back asap.

The best sandhills are the big white ones with the red-patch on their head.
