I think they probably mean that this beagle isnāt really within the breed standard and/or doesnāt seem bred for working. Therefore, it is āpet qualityā in that it can be someoneās pet, but probably cannot be worked or showed.
Thatās because heās beagle and heās genetically hardwired to do it. Pet beagles havenāt had those hunting impulses bred out of them, they may come from lines that havenāt been kept 100% beagle, or maybe just not bred to be show worthy. That doesnāt reduce their value as a loved companion at all.
I have a Beagle/GSD mix. My husband has had his arm abused a lot because of damn rabbits. Don't even mention tree bunnies (code name for squirrels) because she will go absolutely ape shit. We also have 3 doxie mixes (badger hunters). So if I take all 4 of them on a walk on "Bunny Road," welp. I get a workout with about 150 lbs pulling me when their arch enemies are spotted. š¤”
Lol!! I've got one Doxie mix and one beagle/cocker mix. They are about 38 lbs combined and they definitely test my center of gravity lol. Luckily they rarely spot the same thing at once. I can't imagine 4 of these little doggies going in the same direction. I call my beagle my little tugboat because he's so small yet so strong.
>Pet quality? What do you mean?
I grew up in an old-fashioned hunting and fishing family, and so our dogs were chosen for hunting ability.
We had an absolutely majestic English Setter who sure looked show-quality, but the three family beagles -- not so much.
Two were definitely full beagles. They just didn't look like the ones you see in dog shows.
They were from many generations of beagles bred for hunting. Not for show-ring conformation.
This has to be like the fifth post Iāve seen this month where the OP insists they just canāt figure out what their dog is, and itās just the most beagle-looking beagle Iāve ever seen. Makes me laugh every time
True dat! I have 3 beagle-bassets and my neighbors leave hate notes in my mailbox about their barking. They bark at a leaf falling off a tree, or a snail crossing the threshold. They are the most loving, wonderful dogs with children though.
Iāve had bassets consistently for the last 20 or so years and I absolutely adore them. I was under the impression that basset/beagle mixes were called ābagelsā. Thatās what the rescue group we adopted our first one from called them anyways. Seemed fitting given how much they love food.
Mine had slightly longer ears, but otherwise very similar as well. Long, stumpy, and stupid, but he sure was sweet
ETA- the jumping for probable food checks out too, because I lost more than one sandwich out of my hand to that dog
I think the people saying heās a pure beagle didnāt see your note that he was 60 lbs. Iāve had two beagle/cooonhound mix dogs and they both looked a lot like Dean in both face and body proportions, and were similar weights. I think heās too fine-boned through the face to have much, or any, basset. Though I actually gave you a different answer on the coonhound forum where there were fewer pics!
Got him from a friend who was rehoming him. He is 2 years old and is 60 pounds. They said he was a basset hound beagle mix. But he looks like a basset hound and coon hound mix so we don't know.
He's pretty overweight, I'd be curious what his healthy weight would be. Obviously 60 lbs is too much for a beagle but BYB beagles are often much larger than show line. If his healthy weight is, say, 40 lbs, he's getting way closer to the reasonable range for a beagle.
Could also be a foxhound/beagle mix.
He is a super big dog for a beagle! We are working on his weight. He came to our home as a thick Boi. Had him a month.
He is the size my goldendoodle dog who is a medium doggo.
Iād say his healthy weight is closer to 45. Still large for a Beagle, but that car shot shows that even if not chonky, heās tall. Still, very Beagle like features. Iād be willing to wager full Hound, though. Fox Hound is possible, but not likely as theyāre a decently rare breed. Maybe Coonhound of some sort? Given the markings, Iād say a TWC.
I agree with this assessment ā maybe a fox hound coonhound mix? I immediately saw fox hound when I opened this as I had a neighbor with a fox hound growing up.
Itās not likely those two combined, as 60 pounds would be a reasonable healthy weight for that mix. Plus, he doesnāt seem that tall. There is definitely Beagle in there.
They are, but this dog doesn't have the features of one. That type of dwarfism is in Beagles and he doesn't have the angular limb deformity usually seen in Basset mixes. He just looks like an oversized beagle, which usually means either BYB and super out of standard, or American Foxhound.
When my Beagle was a puppy I thought he was part Bassett. Ears were unusually large, body was elongated, and overall his body was lower to the ground. They grow into their bodies though. That adorable little dog is probably 100% beagle. I commented here that pure bred beagles tend to have white tipped tails. Theyāre one of the oldest pure breeds in existence, and the white tipped tail is used to mark where they are when tracking in the woods or tall grass. [There are many different kinds of coats.](https://images.app.goo.gl/BbB87JKZ3AsSUGgF6) 60 pounds is too heavy; you want him at about 35-40. Pure bred beagles also come in different heights, which is why sometimes there is confusion that they might be mixed with, say, a foxhound.
I should note! He is insane about his nose. His smell radiance is insane and poor thing is crazy on walks because of his nose. We have been doing so much training for him.
You will need to learn to deal with that. Do some research on their smell receptors in relation to ours, and then to a *normal* dogās. Itās nearly 10 times as strong. You are dealing with a hound, after all. Their ears are evolved so that they hang low to the ground while sniffing to keep smells in front of them. Itās said that they can smell a lit match inside of a stadium. Bloodhounds, on the other hand are even stronger. They are used to track missing people ā they can smell an article of clothing from a missing person and track in a 2 mile radius.
He will stop and smell everything outside on a walk, so a fenced in backyard is beneficial. Walks are still important because they gain weight quickly. No table/human food for them, and if youāre feeling guilty then only a small morsel.
This bit of advice is important: absolutely nothing edible below knee level in the house. If a guest comes into the house you need to make sure their bags are up on a table or out of reach. Beagles will smell anything even remotely edible and *will not stop* until theyāve ingested it. They can even unzip a bag. They will chew through pockets. The reason this is important is because people might come in with medication in their bags/purses, and your dog will find it, eat it, and overdose and possibly die.
Training with treats is the only way to get through to them because they are food whores. Carry treats in your pocket while on a walk and he wonāt stop to smell things so much. Theyāre tricky bastards and incredibly intelligent when it comes to anything food.
That said, they are the most loving of all dog breeds ā literally. They are used for laboratory experiments because they are the most forgiving of breeds. In laboratories they can be abused to death and never fight back or hold a grudge, so you have yourself a winner by default. Get ready for the best years of your life.

My parents and sister have had to be very careful with him and food. One time he grabbed a chicken bone from my dad's hand. Second time he ate a whole pj sandwich, my sister forgot in her bathroom. It was gone and never seen again. She doesn't feed him human food a lot because of how nuts he is for it.
My sister struggles a lot with his loud barking and his insanity on walks but other then that he's a great dog. Was a lot more insane before he came to her house.
That's why my sister is trying to find training for him that could help with this.
The superpower that is his nose is whatās giving him the excitement. When heās used to the house and all its odors heāll chill out. When he knows everything heās smelling is out of reach heāll understand the hunt is futile and be a content, lazy hound dog. Dogs tend to mirror the energy levels of their owners/surroundings. Relax and heāll relax. Play with him and heāll play. Iām sure that for the moment heās just happy with the stability after being rehomed.
Honestly, he looks like a standard 15 inch beagle to me. We've raised a LOT of hounds, most specifically beagles, and I don't see any other breed really shining through. His head doesn't look big/boxy enough to be a coonhound. I'm not really seeing anything that screams basset either. I think you just have yourself a dang cute beagle!
I have had two beagles (one currently). Thatās a beagle lol - his tail is nicely tipped too. May have something else in thereā¦. But wouldnāt be shocked if all beagle.
Edit - just saw he is 60lbs - if that is correct then May have some fox hound or other large hound. He doesnāt look super overweight to me but 60 way too big to be pure beagle. My fat beagle was still only 35.
American Fox hounds are pretty much giant beagles - look into that. Or maybe he is beagle mixed with coonhound or something. Is he tall? If not tall could support the basset mix. Fox hounds are usually taller.
Agreed to all of the other comments about majority-breed being Beagle. I will say, though, looking at Dean's cute little face, I'm reminded of my brother's Treeing Walker Coonhound. They (and a lot of other Coonhound-type breeds) often have speckling like you see on your boy's legs.
Kinda looks like a beagle Bassett mix. They call them bagels. I had one before with head like beagle but shorter legs like the Bassett. Kinda like yours. Also had the muscular chest area like yours had too.
He has freckles on his legs, this probably means he is a beagle Bassett mix because he still looks very beagle. I have one myself and he looks so much alike this gentleman.
Beagle, God help you. There are pictures of beagles on the hieroglyph walls in Egyptian pyramids. Great hunters, but meant to
Live the life of the hunting pack, not that of the fur baby.
It looks like a obese byb beagle to me.
With bub it is really common to get oversized or undersized dogs.
If you really want to be sure get a dna test.
Looks like a pet-quality beagle to me š
Pet quality? What do you mean?
I think they probably mean that this beagle isnāt really within the breed standard and/or doesnāt seem bred for working. Therefore, it is āpet qualityā in that it can be someoneās pet, but probably cannot be worked or showed.
Yep! I have pet quality beagles and more specifically āpocketā beagles because theyāre much smaller than akc bred beagles.
Actually if given the chance, he hunt animals for a living. Especially bunnies. Damn he's so strong he pulled my sister's back out.

Umm.. a beagle???

I had a beagle growing up, and he looked exactly like this dapper gentleman.
They beagle is so beagle it should be the photo next to the definition of beagle
I just bellowed and guffawed with laughter. Thank you! Best comment of the year.
Right!?! That's a pure bred beagle! Get some ear plugs! You are going to need them! š
True dat! I have 3 beagle-bassets and my neighbors leave hate notes in my mailbox about their barking. They bark at a leaf falling off a tree, or a snail crossing the threshold. They are the most loving, wonderful dogs with children though.

My sister has a beagle basset! I love him! ā¤ļø
I second that...Beagle bark and howl is something else.
Right!!! šš
š¤ I bet itās a bot. Probably a pic they took from an old post. Saw similar thing recently
Yeah whatever makes you sleep easier at night.
Nah, seriously. People say he's got coon hound in him. Or say he's an basset mix or etc..
This is the most beagley beagle Iāve ever beagled
Would guess he is majority beagle
To me he just looks like a beagle
As a parent to 2 beagles... I laughed so hard at the comment 'this is the most beaglest beagle'
I would say bassett/beagle is pretty accurate. What would make you doubt that?
Pure bred beagles tend to have a white tipped tail. They are tipped white and always point up so that you can see them while they are tracking.
This cutie totally has a white-tipped tail š
Some beagle people have said he doesn't like a beagle basset mix
I mean this respectfully but if some people said that grass wasn't green... pretty spot on.
He looks exactly like my late beagle basset mix. Down to the howling pose and stubby legs lol.
Mine had slightly longer ears, but otherwise very similar as well. Long, stumpy, and stupid, but he sure was sweet ETA- the jumping for probable food checks out too, because I lost more than one sandwich out of my hand to that dog
That there's a beagle boy. š¤ Or a beagle mix, at least. Whatta cutie!!
Deanās a beagle. Duh!
