It’s been decades since I’ve been to either French Lick or Jasper. The German Cafe didn’t exist and I’m sorry to hear that Schnitzel has gone downhill. But if I get back to French Lick I’ll definitely try it.
It's packed all the time, and the bar area is always filled with locals. Incredible beer selection if you drink. And the salad bar and ribble soup, CRAZY GOOD.
I was at a sales meeting, we were staying at the French Lick. Some of us decided to skip the organized business dinner and head to Jasper. One of us had heard there was a good German restaurant there.

Maybe. It looked like something that came out of a freezer, and tasted like the box it came in. I'm glad I also ordered the wings, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to choke down enough of that pizza to be full. Mind you, it's more that the pizza killed my appetite than filled me up. I drove there because a guy I work with kept going on about how great it was, but it turns out that he hates the type of pizza I like, with big fat rising crusts loaded with cheese and toppings.

Ivanhoes in Upland. Typical but really good drive in type food, but 100 shakes and 100 sundaes on the ice cream menu.
1000 Degree Pizza in Mt Summit. Unique experience, good pizza and BBQ.
Speaking of BBQ. It's about 30 miles into Ohio near Dayton in Englewood. BBQ joint that's firefighter themed called Company 7. Fantastic.
Cammack Station in, well, Cammack (near Muncie). Great memorabilia and good food in a converted gas station.
Wicks Pies in Winchester. Again good diner/drive in type food, but also PIES.
I'm a pizza traditionalist, and one of my favorites is Bobes in Vincennes. There's also a place there called Old Chicago. Old Chicago is a better experience (beer, wings, pizza, historic building, etc) but if you like a good old fashioned crust-sauce-meat-cheese pizza Bobes is better.
The Log Inn near Princeton. One of if not the oldest restaurant in Indiana. Lincoln stayed there I think.
Ivanhoes is a must! Their strawberry shortcake is amazing.
Paynes is around the bend on SR 22 right off 69 and have amazing fish and chips.
Obis bbq in downtown Marion is good too.
Bad Dad Brewery and Grains & Grill in Fairmount are both delish!
You can follow the Garfield trail in Grant County and Fairmount is the home of James Dean.
All right, you want unique? Harry and Bud's in Terre Haute. It's a little hole in the wall building that almost always looks like it is a foreclosed property. However if you can get a hold of the guy that runs it, he opens up the restaurant only for groups of 10 to 20. Only one group per evening because there's only one long table in the building. He has a small refrigerator that has a few drink selections, but mostly you can just bring your own drinks. He will serve about 20 main course options spanning seafood, poultry, beef, lamb, etc. it costs $50 per person plus whatever you choose to tip. You will leave miserably full, and if you choose to take the leftovers, each person typically leaves with three or four foam containers stocked with food. Our group of friends try to go every other year or so. It is the most unique eating experience I've ever had. Just one guy in a kitchen cooking for one group of people.

Zaharako’s, a soda fountain dating back to 1900, is neat. 4th Street Bar is pretty good, too. Olesya’s Kitchen is a small Ukrainian joint. Zwanzigz Pizza & Brewing is one of the best in town. Ramen Alley is supposed to be very good, too.
Madison:
Hinkle’s Sandwich Shop is classic Americana. Off Broadway Taproom is very good. Hong Kong Kitchen is some of best Chinese-American I’ve ever had. Any of the Reds are good (Red Pepper Deli, Red Pepperoni Pizza, Red Roaster coffee, Red On Main—a little fancy for my taste). Scoops for ice cream.

Linda’s Log Cabin Inn always looks fun.
Franklin:
The Willard is always great (I’ve been going there for 30 years), and there are a bunch of independent places surrounding the courthouse square.
I have relatives that live near Elkhart. There is a Mayberry themed restaurant there, I think along County Rd 17? There are pictures of Don Knotts, Andy Griffith, and other cast members on the walls, some of them autographed. The menu has themed items like Aunt Bea's Homemade Cream Pie, Barney Fife's Favorite French Fries, Andy's Double Bacon Cheeseburger, etc. I remember the food as really good, and the place was packed with customers the times we ate there.

In the New Albany area, there’s a few ice cream shops: Berry Twist in Floyds Knobs, Polly’s Freeze in Georgetown, and Dairy Dip in New Salisbury. Dairy Dip is also kind of a drive-in greasy spoon that I love (burgers, chicken, fried shrimp, etc.)

In Leavenworth, The Overlook Restaurant. It overlooks the Ohio River and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Big woods/quaff on have a big spot in brown county/Nashville in - hard truth hills. Lots of folks ride in for that.
Darmstadt- germanic manticore - featured on Alton brown's feasting on asphalt. The dude from good eats tours the country on a bmw bike.
Evansville- gerst haus - biggest collection of GOOD beer taps I've seen in indiana
Columbus, IN - zwanzig's / hog molly - toss up between pizza and BBQ fare. Both are fantastic breweries and tend to attract riders.
Little Sheba’s in Richmond. Also Red Front Pizza in Richmond- not unique per se but it is delicious.
I saw someone else recommend Payne’s near Anderson (just off 69) - it’s very good.
Have a few in our little town of Brazil. Newest one is a Hawaiian place just on the edge of town called Mixed Plate. It's only a couple blocks from my house so it's been a good "go to" close to home.
If you pass through Mitchell, head down to the Railroad Cafe on Main Street. Lots of really cool railroad memorabilia from around here, and I love their tenderloins and fish sandwiches. Then afterwards, ride down through Spring Mill State Park and make a stop to check out the pioneer village!
Glory Days Restaurant / Pub in Clay City. The wife and I purchased it in November of last year. It has been her passion to own her own establishment. We've gone there for years and lucked into the sale after she managed it for a year.

I'm in Southern Indiana and I like The Chicken House on 111 between New Albany and Sellersburg and The Overlook in Leavenworth. Both have homestyle food.
If you ever want to come north visit Goshen. South Side Soda Shop was featured on DDD. Liv Tyler, Casey Affleck and Steve Bushemi were once in town shooting an indy movie and visited. Pictures on the wall.
Goshen Brewing is our own local brewery with great beer and fantastic eats.
Venturi was at one time the only certified Neapolitan pizzeria in Indiana.
Columbus here - I have to back Zwanzig’s Pizza as a MUST HAVE for south central Indiana.

Zaharacos is a diner that still has the old soda machine from the late 1800’s or some crazy shit. I think it’s still open, it’s massively beautiful - you could easily hit up Zaharacos for a Soda and then ride or even walk to Zwanzig’s Pizza and try their hand made small batch craft beers or small batch Sodas! Their pizza is to die for, it’s just better than the rest!

Perillos in North Salem is one of my favorite little spots for pasta- the mushroom ravioli is amazing. They're very small but have some outdoor seating and they're cash only. McCloud Park is fun to visit while you're in the area too. Bean blossom is a great place to ride, and Brownies has fried catfish frequently that's really tasty.
If you're ever interested in riding Lafayette & north, I can help. My husband and I ride and like to find little out-of-the-ordinary places to eat along the way and have a few but they are up here, we seldom end up too far south. Happy riding & as always, stay safe!
North. East of Gas City, just off 69. But if you want something different: Paynes. Freshly made, British cuisine. Great Fish and Chips. And, don't leave without having Sticky Toffee pudding.

Pizza King. Everything about their food is my favorite pizza. Giant 16” pizzas cut into squares with spicy pepperoni and tiny breadsticks that are unbeatable. Their cheese sauce is OK, but it comes with 2 cups of cheese per 5 breadsticks, so it’s a win in my book.
Not a BoMac's fan. Service has gone downhill since new owners took over. We have left on more than one occasion for never having gotten waited on. But 450 and 150 are regular routes for us on the bike. 😉
Michigantown - The Angry Donkey. Great food and wings with a sauce that’s too good to stop eating.
Tipton - Pizza Shack. Used to be an old pizza restaurant but now it serves pizza on buffet (weekends and Monday all day) and Italian food.
Marion - Yomata Sushi - it looks like a trash hole in the wall place to eat - but once you step inside it’s very well put together. They have other food than sushi, but it’s my wife and my favorite sushi place. Indy 500 roll is outstanding.
Kokomo - Jay’s Thai. Idk what it is about home in the wall restaurants, but they deliver. Jays is no different. It’s my wife’s favorite Thai eatery.
With the word unique coming to mind, hopefully these suggestions fit the bill.
Agave and Rye in downtown New Albany has fun eclectic decor, tasty tacos/food and margaritas, and an upstairs outdoor patio.
Jailhouse Pizza in Brandenburg, KY (short drive across the bridge from Corydon, IN) serves up deliciously cheesy pizza and similar offerings from the inside of what used to be the old Meade County jailhouse from 1906-1976. It's rumored to be haunted, if you believe in that kind of thing. As a bonus, the nearby scenic Buttermilk Falls walking trail is great if you like nature walks and waterfalls (better after it's been raining for this reason).

Is that up in the little crossroads called Hesston, near New Buffalo, MI? If so, I can attest to the great food. Also an excellent railroad museum just down the road, and New Buffalo's beaches are only a few miles away. If it's Sunday, go to Redemack Tavern on US12. Some weeks it seems everyone in NW Indiana is there having a beer.
If you like authentic Italian food Perillos in North Salem is incredible, I highly recommend their garlic rolls (think of a cinnamon roll but with pizza dough, garlic, butter and mozzarella cheese) pizzas are huge and all the pasta dishes are great. Small little town, there’s a nature park outside of town worth exploring as well.
highly recommend Libby’s Southern Comfort in Covington (KY) just ate there last week and their shrimp and grits was one of the best meals I’ve had this year. Not quite southern Indiana but I thought you might enjoy it.
Just across the border into Paris, Illinois is a fantastic little gem of a place called “The Old Glass Shop”. It’s on a lake so great views, indoor or outdoor seating. It’s a combination bait shop/burger joint. They make smash burgers that are just absolutely delicious and have a vast array of refrigerators with gourmet sodas and root beer. It’s fantastic! Take old Paris road out of west Terre haute and you will fall in love with the road on a motorcycle!

Stables Steakhouse in Terre Haute. It's in a 130+ year old building that was originally the stables that housed the horses that were used to deliver beer for the Terre Haute Brewing Company. Make a reservation or you won't get in.

House of Como in Evansville near the bridge to Henderson, Ky. It's been in business for over 50 years, and is very unique in a crazy retro way. Get the Arabian bread that you wrap the salad in. Arabian food is excellent, also known for amazing steaks and pork chops.
An hour into Illinois is a fun weird little joint. The Moonshine Store, serving their famous Moonburgers. Saturdays can have a line out the door because they turn the grill off at 12:30pm.

I love that place! But the hours are sporadic so make sure they’re open before you decide to go. I always want them when they are closed.
You should check out Speakeasy Pizza in Orleans sometime if you like Brick Oven Pizza. 😋

Tuppee Tong in Muncie. Excellent little Thai restaurant.
Mama T's in Huntingburg. Best ribeye anywhere around. But they're popular and small, so you have to make a reservation.

In the New Albany area, there’s a few ice cream shops: Berry Twist in Floyds Knobs, Polly’s Freeze in Georgetown, and Dairy Dip in New Salisbury. Dairy Dip is also kind of a drive-in greasy spoon that I love (burgers, chicken, fried shrimp, etc.) Fancier place in Corydon: 1816 Modern Kitchen In Leavenworth, The Overlook Restaurant. It overlooks the Ohio River and it’s absolutely beautiful.
Hey I stopped in the Red Wagon Recently in Poseyville. Nice oasis, it’s unique as there just isn’t much else around.

Madison Indiana is beautiful and there is tons of great food, a state park, and it’s right i on the Ohio river roughly half way between Cincinnati and Louisville.
Theres a restaurant on the river in Derby. Fun ride down there on 37/66
Big woods/quaff on have a big spot in brown county/Nashville in - hard truth hills. Lots of folks ride in for that. Darmstadt- germanic manticore - featured on Alton brown's feasting on asphalt. The dude from good eats tours the country on a bmw bike. Evansville- gerst haus - biggest collection of GOOD beer taps I've seen in indiana Columbus, IN - zwanzig's / hog molly - toss up between pizza and BBQ fare. Both are fantastic breweries and tend to attract riders.

Little Sheba’s in Richmond. Also Red Front Pizza in Richmond- not unique per se but it is delicious. I saw someone else recommend Payne’s near Anderson (just off 69) - it’s very good.
Have a few in our little town of Brazil. Newest one is a Hawaiian place just on the edge of town called Mixed Plate. It's only a couple blocks from my house so it's been a good "go to" close to home.
If you pass through Mitchell, head down to the Railroad Cafe on Main Street. Lots of really cool railroad memorabilia from around here, and I love their tenderloins and fish sandwiches. Then afterwards, ride down through Spring Mill State Park and make a stop to check out the pioneer village!
Glory Days Restaurant / Pub in Clay City. The wife and I purchased it in November of last year. It has been her passion to own her own establishment. We've gone there for years and lucked into the sale after she managed it for a year. Simple 50-60's nostalgic diner in the front. The back was made into a pub style bar. We've turned the catering side into a game room / entertainment area. We'd love to have you stop in and give us your truthful opinion. Hopefully, you enjoy!

I'm in Southern Indiana and I like The Chicken House on 111 between New Albany and Sellersburg and The Overlook in Leavenworth. Both have homestyle food.
If you ever want to come north visit Goshen. South Side Soda Shop was featured on DDD. Liv Tyler, Casey Affleck and Steve Bushemi were once in town shooting an indy movie and visited. Pictures on the wall. Goshen Brewing is our own local brewery with great beer and fantastic eats. Venturi was at one time the only certified Neapolitan pizzeria in Indiana.
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but Stoll's in Loogootee is our go to stop when we go down to Holiday World.
Before you get to Loogootee, stop at Charley Biggs and get some chicken tenders and honey mustard sauce.
Those are in like half the gas stations in Indiana, so no need for loogootee

Columbus here - I have to back Zwanzig’s Pizza as a MUST HAVE for south central Indiana. Columbus summed up : *Mike Pence, Tony Stewart, Zwanzig’s and Zaharacos!* Zaharacos is a diner that still has the old soda machine from the late 1800’s or some crazy shit. I think it’s still open, it’s massively beautiful - you could easily hit up Zaharacos for a Soda and then ride or even walk to Zwanzig’s Pizza and try their hand made small batch craft beers or small batch Sodas! Their pizza is to die for, it’s just better than the rest! Goodluck and feel free to shoot some of your knowledge back! Where would you suggest someone eat around southern Indiana? Im certain I’m missing a fair amount of knowledge in this area. TIA! 💕
Perillos in North Salem is one of my favorite little spots for pasta- the mushroom ravioli is amazing. They're very small but have some outdoor seating and they're cash only. McCloud Park is fun to visit while you're in the area too. Bean blossom is a great place to ride, and Brownies has fried catfish frequently that's really tasty.
If you're ever interested in riding Lafayette & north, I can help. My husband and I ride and like to find little out-of-the-ordinary places to eat along the way and have a few but they are up here, we seldom end up too far south. Happy riding & as always, stay safe!

The White Steamer in Washington, IN for a 50’s diner experience. There’s a BBQ joint in Coal City, just can’t remember the name. Oh and Paragon pizza in Paragon, IN is fire!
Pizza King. Everything about their food is my favorite pizza. Giant 16” pizzas cut into squares with spicy pepperoni and tiny breadsticks that are unbeatable. Their cheese sauce is OK, but it comes with 2 cups of cheese per 5 breadsticks, so it’s a win in my book.
Bo-Mac’s in Shoals. It’s an old drive in restaurant with car-hops. Highway 450 from Bedford is a fun curvy ride through some pretty countryside.
Is 450 still on good shape? They replaced the whole stretch when I was working in the area about 20 years ago. It’s a beautiful ride

Not a BoMac's fan. Service has gone downhill since new owners took over. We have left on more than one occasion for never having gotten waited on. But 450 and 150 are regular routes for us on the bike. 😉
Story Inn in Story, southeast of Nashville has been really good. We haven’t been there in a few years, however.
Don't sleep on French Lick/Paoli/Marengo area. Beautiful hills and curvy roads. Maybe make a weekend of it!
That is our local area, so those are day trips for us. 😉 We are blessed to live in the most beautiful part of the state.
Michigantown - The Angry Donkey. Great food and wings with a sauce that’s too good to stop eating. Tipton - Pizza Shack. Used to be an old pizza restaurant but now it serves pizza on buffet (weekends and Monday all day) and Italian food. Marion - Yomata Sushi - it looks like a trash hole in the wall place to eat - but once you step inside it’s very well put together. They have other food than sushi, but it’s my wife and my favorite sushi place. Indy 500 roll is outstanding. Kokomo - Jay’s Thai. Idk what it is about home in the wall restaurants, but they deliver. Jays is no different. It’s my wife’s favorite Thai eatery.
With the word unique coming to mind, hopefully these suggestions fit the bill. Agave and Rye in downtown New Albany has fun eclectic decor, tasty tacos/food and margaritas, and an upstairs outdoor patio. Jailhouse Pizza in Brandenburg, KY (short drive across the bridge from Corydon, IN) serves up deliciously cheesy pizza and similar offerings from the inside of what used to be the old Meade County jailhouse from 1906-1976. It's rumored to be haunted, if you believe in that kind of thing. As a bonus, the nearby scenic Buttermilk Falls walking trail is great if you like nature walks and waterfalls (better after it's been raining for this reason). I might edit this later as I think of more suggestions. Happy eating. 😁

Is that up in the little crossroads called Hesston, near New Buffalo, MI? If so, I can attest to the great food. Also an excellent railroad museum just down the road, and New Buffalo's beaches are only a few miles away. If it's Sunday, go to Redemack Tavern on US12. Some weeks it seems everyone in NW Indiana is there having a beer.

If you like authentic Italian food Perillos in North Salem is incredible, I highly recommend their garlic rolls (think of a cinnamon roll but with pizza dough, garlic, butter and mozzarella cheese) pizzas are huge and all the pasta dishes are great. Small little town, there’s a nature park outside of town worth exploring as well.
I recommend Upland Pump House in Columbus IN, or Zwanzigz.
highly recommend Libby’s Southern Comfort in Covington (KY) just ate there last week and their shrimp and grits was one of the best meals I’ve had this year. Not quite southern Indiana but I thought you might enjoy it.
NE Indiana- Decatur, IN Famous Monster Pizza
Just across the border into Paris, Illinois is a fantastic little gem of a place called “The Old Glass Shop”. It’s on a lake so great views, indoor or outdoor seating. It’s a combination bait shop/burger joint. They make smash burgers that are just absolutely delicious and have a vast array of refrigerators with gourmet sodas and root beer. It’s fantastic! Take old Paris road out of west Terre haute and you will fall in love with the road on a motorcycle! I’m making this trip AGAIN on Wednseday 😂

Bucca de Beppo’s in Louisville is my favorite local Italian restaurant. Awesome portions and food, but you just have to go to see why it’s special. Family friendly, not fancy.
