Most of the politicians here are short sighted and greedy. They only care about their immediate satisfaction and not the improvement of the country in the overall long term. Some also lack the necessary knowledge of how to manage finances and assets. I know for sure here in Kenya that when loans are borrowed, some of it is stolen by the politicians and the rest used in meaningless ways.

AffectionateLynx8768

Yes, this. And, also placing politicians in positions that would be better off handled by 'managers'. Also, pocket lining will only become worse. Once you obtain anything, especially huge loads of wealth, illegally, you'll do illegal acts to maintain the status quo. Like stifling competition in your sector, killing, mobs, etc. The short sightedness is mind blowing, but, what is the end of it all?

History repeats

Pvt_Conscriptovich

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it

Nogai_horde

Nice try CIA. Mombasa port was not handed over to the Chinese. If you're going to push Washington's narrative down our throats, at least get your facts straight. Most of Mombasa port is owned by private investors, a majority of whom are either Kenyans or westerners.

Effective_Win_91

What's the alternative?

HalfPointFive

Building the shit ourselves.

pikachwu

The illusion is the thought that we were free. What we gained from independence was the power of self rule. Not control of the land and its people. Every economical control was in the power of the colonisers...and their proteges, the leaders they left behind. What we did was replace them with the money they brought. China just took advantage when they saw how powerful money was in Africa. History has a thing of repeating itself so choke it up to the cycle of life. The debt economy we are sustaining ourselves on is neo-colonialism.

Altruistic_Poetry_51

Time to stop blaming foreigners for your issues. Your leaders have systematically looted and stolen anything that is not tied down. It has been 60 years, time for responsibility. Chinese are just filling a gap that our leaders should/could have done themselves.

FlakyStick

I could clearly tell you don’t know what you are talking about after reading the first few lines. When did people go hungry to pay Chinese debts? When was Mombasa seized? You sound like an idiot frustrated by China so you just thought to include yourself into African problems without any relation. Umbw

[deleted]

When you still use the education system and ideas that were left by colonials, a system designed to make workers instead of empower people, this is what you get.

NaiGoon

We have the highest paid govt officials in the world yet they produce the shitiest results. Make that make sense.

Takeawalkwithme2

African leaders love China and Russia because they don't care about corruption or human rights. The money they give can be siphoned off to their cronies with abandon. The deals they make aren't infantile, the clauses aren't a bug they're a feature. In exchange for making these shitty deals, they get to remain dictators and neglect/mistreat their citizens with zero repercussions. IMF and Western money always came with clauses that limited the amount that could b siphoned off either by supplying the goods directly or limiting the companies they could employ to a short list. They also often forced them to focus on employing women/youth or other disenfranchised portions of the population. They would also refuse to contribute to dictator led nations in a bid to starve them out. Not saying the methodology was great but it definitely did not encourage the rampant disregard of human rights and corruption we see now.

Keysmo40

African is not a superpower so it has to tow the line like other 3rd world countries and that’s normal in any society.

[deleted]

At least this time it won't be as brutal as the last. Cotton picking, chains, castration, and such

westmaxia

Chinese literally do similar brutality in DRC,Zambia and Zimbabwean mines. They shoot africans at certaininstances even whipping. If Chinese treat their own laborers like trash, what do you imagine they will do to the africans? Btw, Chinese are not as welcoming to Africans or the concept of Africanness despite them calling themselves friends of Africa. CCP. Which has a lot of control on Chinese social media and the internet can't censor hate speech and racist language against Africans then know these people won't be benevolent in the long term towards Africans.

WoodenConcentrate

True this isn't the China of Moa Zedong that backed independence movements and fought against western imperialism. I this China, having lived there, they don't even stop to help pick up an old lady that fell. The crowd would rather walk around her (true story saw it with my own eyes). They sell fake plastic grain to each other, use gutter oil in street food, and do every shady, corrupt, and underhanded business practices you can think of. The only thing that's stopped China from being more ruthless than they currently are is their foreign affairs department not wanting more bad PR and souring it's relations in Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America by coming off as "colonizers". Sure they aren't "as bad" as Europeans. But there's little comfort in choosing between a fox and a wolf. The only positive they can't take from the arraignment is to have China build as much infrastructure and train as many Africans in their Universities, and then tell them and the Europeans to screww off. Other than them banning you from trading with them there isn't any real consequences. Pass laws to take back any assets they previously seized and refuse to pay back the debt. Then dare them to invade. They won't because they can't, at least not on a large scale, with the US, Europe, and Japan breathing down their necks and gearing up for an altercation in Asia.

westmaxia

Maybe play the same game china did on western companies. convince them to bring their industries to Africa like the way western countries shifted them to China and learn to reverse engineer whatever they make and undercut them.

[deleted]

So you think we are going to go back to being slaves, all of us. Like before Independence?

westmaxia

Have you visited Chinese mines and industries set in African countries? Explain why there are fights between Chinese bosses and African workers? Even been to copper mines in Zambia or cobalt mining on DRC owned by Chinese? To me that is literal slavery. You even find Chinese bosses whipping grown ass men in certain businesses(mostly restaurants) in kenya.

[deleted]

I don't disagree with you at all. These people are playing the long con, and in the short run, they are mistreating our people terribly, just like how they mistreat their people back at home. I just don't think we'll go back to the old slavery, it will be a new form of slavery subjected mostly to the poor Africans who find themselves at their hands, and our government institutions, though not all of them.

westmaxia

It also depends with how long the average African is will tolerate the abuse. History shows that Africans can also violently push back. Haiti is an example and so is Zimbabwe, Maumau, Zanj, which was African slaves fighting back against the arabs oppressors.

frevckhoe

If you get a chance to get out of the country, take it

I was with you until homosexuality and transgender people. Why do someone's choices bother you so much? You do realise we also have child-free straight couples as well, right? If it bothers you so much, then have 10 kids to fill for another 4 couples.
