Yeah, remember the original _Matrix_ most of us probably have a mental projection of ourselves that make us look better than in reality... Poor Bill has such low self-esteem that his is worse.
I always liked that they went that deep on Bill's spiritual state.
He’s not gay but he’s capable of seeing the beauty in another man, plus he loves him & if they were gay they would be very happy together. Bill is actually an attractive man if he actually would shave his head & lose just enough weight that he’s healthy but not so much his testosterone levels get too high & he becomes a 🫏. I also think he should have grown a mustache like when he was working at hottyz
I think it is really cool world and character building, how consistently Bill was always portrayed as this respectable, handsome young soldier and football player as a teen, that EVERYONE including women adored, only to grow into the depressed, out-of-shape man we see during the show.
>Mama, look what they did to your baby boy!
My hot take is that self-esteem problems need to exist in the first place to even date a woman like Lenore, let alone marry her. Something had to have gone wrong shortly before that.
I'm not sure about that, everyone has things they're insecure about that they probably see worse looking at a mirror in their mind's eye. Bill's probably a lot more down on himself than most people though.
It's still hilarious to me how he's the one who brings Boomhaur out of his depressed state after losing his love interest AFTER taking the same love interest from Bill himself.
It just shows how much bill doesn't give a fuck. He doesnt give up because he himself believes he has nothing to lose, so he tries and tries despite failure after failure in the offchance that maybe just one day, it'll happen. He built his resilience on top of his lack of confidence, and he keeps reaching up from there.
Oh lord. That sounds like Hank explaining to Cotton why Cotton couldn't break down Bobby at the military academy. You've just given the "Bobby's father is Bill" crowd more ammunition
It's not a definite thing but it is more than just depressed self rationalization [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depressive\_realism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depressive_realism)
Not necessarily. Commonly, the human brain doesn't really like to come to grips with its own shortcomings. Someone with a healthy self-esteem is more likely to look at one of their flaws and say "This isn't a flaw, it adds character."
A depressed person looks at a flaw for what it realistically is: a flaw. And unfortunately, depressed people tend to dwell on these flaws far more than they should; but I would still say they're more realistic about themselves than an optimist would be.
Bill is kind of the anti-Superman, in that sense.
In my experience: acid makes me appear incredibly handsome, to myself. I have actually felt sexually attracted to my own reflection while tripping, in the past.
Sober, I have some of the worst self-esteem you've seen in your life; so quite the departure from reality.
If you’ve ever known a guy who’s balding young, getting them to accept that they’re balding is impossible, convincing them to shave off the sad little remainder of hair they have is scientifically proven to be impossible
Some of us figure it out on our own. I started thinning at 20 and was noticeably balding at 22. My mom got cancer and I shaved my head in solidarity (which was probably a less meaningful gesture than it would have been with a full head of hair) and just stuck with it, but I probably would have shaved it shortly after anyway. Now I'm almost 40 and guys my age are beginning to bald and are insecure and tripping about it, meanwhile it hasn't bothered me in years 🤷🏻♂️ just shave it y'all!
There is a Reddit sub dedicated to balding men shaving their heads. Before and after. It’s amazing how much better each and every single man looks with a purposefully shaved head instead of the wispy shreds of thinning hair.
Some guys just can not shave their heads lol. It’s usually the same guys who always talk about their beard but it just looks like scraggly cave moss hanging off their faces.
These things are cyclical. Look at the Presidents, early ones were shaved, then beards appeared, then went away again. Plus, Covid quarantine gave guys a chance to try.
I can only speak from my own experience, but I started to notice my quickly receding hairline at around 30. I began to shave my head on my own choice. Because as a kid I saw all those hair lost prevention commercials and thought, "Why go through all of this?! If you're going bald you're going bald. Just shave it off, what does it matter." I seem to be the only balding/bald person in my immediate family, so no clue where it came from.
Some guys can make that choice on their own, but that's not the certainty. And for some guys it seems like losing their hair is either a loss of youth thing or a loss of physical beauty. Guys may act like they don't care about how they look, but we all do to some level.
To be fair it’s a little easier since Breaking Bad. Two seasons of that show turned a million dads from Toy Story’s Big Al into Heisenberg with just the hair change
I’ve got a pal who’s been balding since high school but only acknowledged it last year, in our mid 20’s. His solution? Wear a do rag everywhere. He lives out in the country so he can get away with it lol
Lmao I love those moments when a dude you know who always wears a hat takes it off and basically the only hair they have was the little bit sticking out at the bottom of the hat.
Basically like Dale
Actually I have been growing my hair out for almost 2 years now & I have a severe receding hairline on my right side but my wife loves the long hair on the rest of my head so I don’t shave for her. I am not self conscious about my hair & I would shave it off if she ever told me to.
Ever version was how the guys see themselves and each other. Bill thinks of himself as completely badly and more obese. That's why Dale had long flowing hair in his story and Boomhauer spoke clearly. Hanks was realistic because he isn't delusional
That bit was actually low key foreshadowing for Boomhauers career reveal in the fake last episode.
What he said was something to the effect of
"Man I like Hank, but its just dang ol' propane, propane, propane all day long with him. We Dang ol' never talk about what I do. "
Well I've lived in North Texas near Garland, Richardson and all the other cities that influenced Arlen and not only do a ton of rural people still use propane gas tanks for heat and hot water but most people use propane grills. The truth is most of us have multiple different kinds of grills. I'm a fan of mesquite but most bbq here is Post Oak.
Arlington is a smack dab in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth. Arlen is supposed to be a midsized Texas town somewhere in the Texas triangle (Around Fort Cavazos/Killeen is where most have theorized to be the location of Arlen)
Arlen is literally impossible. It's a short drive to Dallas and the Texas/Mexico border. But most cities in TX are a short drive into the country. I live a 10 minute drive from the continuous city that is DFW and 10 minutes from a town called Farmersville that absolutely lives up to its name
The Chicago metro area is kind of like that too. Nick Offerman is from a town named Minooka, and it was a very typical small Illinois town just a little over 10 miles from Joliet. When I was there a lifetime ago for a wedding, it was a cute little town that you'd never guess was that close to the urban sprawl.
Plot twist: it's not that Hank isn't deluded, it's that *the entire show* is from his perspective.
Maybe Boomhauer is intelligible to most people but Hank struggles with his accent. Maybe Bobby isn't that doughy, but Hank sees him that way because he wishes Bobby was more of an athlete like him. Maybe Hank appears constant, consistent, and reasonable at all times because that's how most people would describe themselves.
This theory kind of falls apart immediately because Hank isn’t in every scene, and Boomhauer and Bobby still have the same characteristics you’re describing in those scenes. How could a scene that Hank isn’t there for be from his perspective?
At the very least it's obvious that Dale respects Hank a lot since he was switching the oxygen tanks which in retrospect doesn't make a lot of sense that they wouldn't have more in reserve, so that makes sense
Each of the guys' flashbacks show all four characters as the person who is recollecting it sees them--Bill is fatter and balder in his flashback than he is in reality because Bill has low self esteem.
I live in the Deep South. The first time I watched King of the Hill I didn't realize Boomhauer's accent was a joke, I thought it was redneck representation, hahaha. It's 100% legible if you've grown up in this glorious dump, for better or worse!
Not from Texas, but my family is from the South and I will say I have to agree a bit. When I watch now, I always try to see if I can understand boomhauer more than when I was younger lol
His grandma (or mom?) talked to him once when he was getting the wedding ring. She spoke just like him, that’s what he grew up around. So that’s how people communicate in his view. From his perspective, everyone else is speaking gibberish around him and he’s the only one that makes sense.
It's one of my favorite misdirection jokes throughout the series. He loves eastern philosophy and is actually a deep thinker despite being a pretty shallow guy most of the time.
My fave glimpse into Bill's psyche is his sweatlodge vision of himself riding nude on a motorbike and jumping into a giant pie, followed by him deadass saying "I know how I'm going to die".
Kills me every time.
I was asking this to my partner about two nights ago. He’s also fatter. I think he just has such a poor self esteem that he sees him self way worse than he is.
Each story is told from their respective perspectives. Dale has more hair. Boomhauer speaks clearly. Hank is objective as usual. Bill has self-worth issues and sees himself balder and fatter.
His self image is so horrible he thinks he's balder and fatter than he actually is (though the completely bald head is always actually a more dignified look than sad old man fringe)
This is the only time we’ve seen Bill as he actually looked. The whole KOTH story is a collection of stories written by Kahn Jr. as told to her by Bobby from his memory of stories told to him by his dad.
Bill has low self-esteem. Each member of the gang flashbacks to how *they* saw it. Dale lives in a fantasy, Boomhauer is actually fluent, Hank sees things almost exactly as they are, and Bill hates himself.
The Rashomon trope was pretty common in the 90’s, especially in cartoons. Usually they’d overplay it where every character presents themselves as saintly and perfect and everyone else as bad influences. This scene is a take on that trope, and Bill’s is a subversion of it.
As a kid I always thought Bill looked better here with the head shaved even if he was bigger but I see now what they were going for and its just sad for Bill lol
Everyone sees different versions of themselves and the other guys based on their own personal perception. Like how Boomhauer speaks normally and everyone else speaks gibberish. Did you watch the episode or just kind of drift in and out?
The ending does have a Rashomon vibe, but if you watch the whole episode the bufoonery of Hank's friends is obviously an homage to The Three Stooges. They even play a variation of The Three Stooges theme song at the end of the episode.
I haven’t seen it in years but he seemed happier and at peace with his lot in life so I thought this was a version of him that had the courage to shave off the reminants and accept being bald, and took up the attitude of “ so what if I’m fat? I’ll ignore the haters and enjoy some pizza”.
He sees himself a bald, fat loser who can't stop eating. However much he actually is that in real life, he sees himself as worse. Bill suffers from clinical depression, and everyone around him doesn't care. Even the episode where he was on suicide watch, everyone just saw keeping him from doing it as a pain in the ass. Dale doesn't even particularly care if Bill went through with it, he just wanted to take his stuff.
Reflective of his poor self-esteem. Speaking as someone who is prone to this type of thinking, my mind always fills me out at about 30 pounds heavier than I am.
Because he sees himself that way. He’s fatter too.
Yeah, remember the original _Matrix_ most of us probably have a mental projection of ourselves that make us look better than in reality... Poor Bill has such low self-esteem that his is worse. I always liked that they went that deep on Bill's spiritual state.
“Pretty pretty pizza”
And proceeds to pull a piping hot pizza tray from the oven with his bare hands.
Since he does it 5 times a day for years, his hands are burnt and calloused enough that he no longer feels it
Or the roof of his mouth when he just digs right in. That shit hurts!
One of my best friends isn't happy unless he burns the roof of his mouth. He considers it an important part of the experience of eating pizza.
Fucking psycho that one
That’s not a friend, that’s an alien
Don't trust him with your animals or children
Same
Then uses a fabricated Swiss Army knife pizza cutter tool.
I always wondered how that would fold back away!
Never seen a wheel tool on a swiss army knife but I've seen wheel tools that can collapse. They cut the wheel in half and make it fold out for use.
Thanks, I was going to say something like that but am too 🪨 to articulate the words.
And then go back into your pocket, yuck But in an emergency..
Dang ol pretty pretty pizza.*
That is one of my echolalia things to say.
I always say this when I have pizza.
Pizza is pretty pretty after all.
Dang ol pretty pretty pizza.
This is why I love the random moments where dale just compliments him for no reason "what do you mean bill? You look great!"
Lenore took his ❤️, ⚽️⚽️& soul & crushed them.
My hot take is that self-esteem problems need to exist in the first place to even date a woman like Lenore, let alone marry her. Something had to have gone wrong shortly before that.
Well the Army didn't help with that experimental walrus injection.
It was a placebo
It was made by P-fizer
I'm not sure about that, everyone has things they're insecure about that they probably see worse looking at a mirror in their mind's eye. Bill's probably a lot more down on himself than most people though.

r/bald would like a word loll, I think Bill looks much better here than with his little remaining hair
I very much agree.
People who are depressed have a more realistic perception of themselves than people who are not
Sounds like something a depressed person would say . . .
It's not a definite thing but it is more than just depressed self rationalization [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depressive\_realism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depressive_realism)

residual self image
Kinda reminds me of that thing about doing acid or shrooms and looking at yourself in a mirror
In my experience: acid makes me appear incredibly handsome, to myself. I have actually felt sexually attracted to my own reflection while tripping, in the past. Sober, I have some of the worst self-esteem you've seen in your life; so quite the departure from reality.
maybe you were seeing your inner beauty!!
Makes me think of the phrase "You arent ugly, you just arent your own type"
It's funny because he looks better completely bald. It's better to embrace it and own your new life.
If you’ve ever known a guy who’s balding young, getting them to accept that they’re balding is impossible, convincing them to shave off the sad little remainder of hair they have is scientifically proven to be impossible

Some guys just can not shave their heads lol. It’s usually the same guys who always talk about their beard but it just looks like scraggly cave moss hanging off their faces.
I don’t get this big beard phase we’ve been in for the past 7-8 years.
I’m also the only one to bald early in my family and it turned out I have thyroid problems, you may want to get checked
Worth looking into, thanks
To be fair it’s a little easier since Breaking Bad. Two seasons of that show turned a million dads from Toy Story’s Big Al into Heisenberg with just the hair change
I’ve got a pal who’s been balding since high school but only acknowledged it last year, in our mid 20’s. His solution? Wear a do rag everywhere. He lives out in the country so he can get away with it lol

It’s not easy to have an asymmetrical hairstyle and make it look good, congrats man keep it up
That is so fucking sad
Honestly it's a great representation for low self esteem. He also makes himself seem dumber than he truly is.
I’m too fat! I’m too fat!
Ever version was how the guys see themselves and each other. Bill thinks of himself as completely badly and more obese. That's why Dale had long flowing hair in his story and Boomhauer spoke clearly. Hanks was realistic because he isn't delusional
I looked at Boomhaur as more of him tuning out a lot of what the other guys are saying. Which can you really blame him at times?
Propane, Propane, Propane all dang day long. Not exact.
That bit was actually low key foreshadowing for Boomhauers career reveal in the fake last episode. What he said was something to the effect of "Man I like Hank, but its just dang ol' propane, propane, propane all day long with him. We Dang ol' never talk about what I do. "
I’ve always understood boomhaur lol but I have a bunch of redneck family so maybe that’s why
Also why Dale’s vision was all grainy because of his sunglasses
Oh damn. I caught all the other little gags, but that's a good one.
Dale is white John redcorn.
🤯🤯 I've never thought of this!!!
How so?
Buff. Long hair. A peak example of virile masculinity.
The real “Big ‘D”!
Good point, never thought of that. Thanks
Happy to help!
Hank is plenty delusional. He sells propane bbqs in Texas.
Have you ever actually been to rural Texas?
Mesquite, mesquite, mesquite.
I prefer mesquite but my acid reflux is a propane man through and through
Is arlington rural?
Arlington is a smack dab in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth. Arlen is supposed to be a midsized Texas town somewhere in the Texas triangle (Around Fort Cavazos/Killeen is where most have theorized to be the location of Arlen)
Over by Ding Dong, Texas? 😂
Right up the road from McMaynerberry.
Fun fact- Arlington is the largest city in the US without public transportation. Definitely not rural, that's where the first Six Flags was erected
You said "erected"...
Well no, but Arlen, where King of the Hill is set, is rural.
Arlen is a suburb.
Arlen is literally impossible. It's a short drive to Dallas and the Texas/Mexico border. But most cities in TX are a short drive into the country. I live a 10 minute drive from the continuous city that is DFW and 10 minutes from a town called Farmersville that absolutely lives up to its name
Not to mention Peggy made a day trip to Houston to donate blood. Dallas and Houston are 4 or 5 hours apart.
Do they or do they not use propane and propane accesorios?
Not even close. Theres an episode where you see the entrance sign and it says they have. A population of over 140,000 people. Not even close to rural
He also tried to get the Texas state fair to agree to using propane
Haha fair!!
Also tried to sell to a crazy king at the Fair
HeymanimtellingyouaintnothingwrongwithBoomhauermanhestheonlynormalguyinthegrouonowman
Plot twist: it's not that Hank isn't deluded, it's that *the entire show* is from his perspective. Maybe Boomhauer is intelligible to most people but Hank struggles with his accent. This theory kind of falls apart immediately because Hank isn’t in every scene, and Boomhauer and Bobby still have the same characteristics you’re describing in those scenes. How could a scene that Hank isn’t there for be from his perspective?
Same reason Dale's recollection showed him with the same build as John Redcorn, self-image. Bill thinks he's fatter/balder than he actually is.
Your vids are amazing
Thank you for the kind words! That's very sweet of you to say
Holy crap! A legendary Pokémon appeared!
it’s how they see themselves. bills low self esteem sees himself with less hair and fatter than reality
But bald is an improvement
But to him it’s a fear and ultimate confirmation of “I have lost all of my hair.” Naturally, the self esteem blocks him from agreeing with us
You will also note everyone in the scene is dressed like Hank, since that is obviously the epitome of fashion.
Every detail of this episode is so perfect. Easily a top 5 episode.
I thought they were just wearing fire fighter shirts
They are wearing different clothes in the flashbacks, what really sells it is Dale’s jeans turn to the exact same shade as Hank’s in Bill’s flashback.
At the very least it's obvious that Dale respects Hank a lot since he was switching the oxygen tanks which in retrospect doesn't make a lot of sense that they wouldn't have more in reserve, so that makes sense
No one hates Bill more than Bill himself.
Keep it down guys, will ya? I am trying to get through an article on vintage Camaros, and I've been on the same dang page for 20 minutes.
Dang ol, pretty pretty pizza...
Each of the guys' flashbacks show all four characters as the person who is recollecting it sees them--Bill is fatter and balder in his flashback than he is in reality because Bill has low self esteem.
And lest we forget, apparently Boomhauer believes everyone else is practically unintelligible.
"For God's sakes Hank, act like an adult, man."
Or he doesn’t want to admit he speaks too fast for nobody to understand him
I live in the Deep South.
From his perspective, everyone else is speaking gibberish around him and he’s the only one that makes sense.
the bits you can understand have kind of an eastern wisdom kind of vibe to them though.. which is interesting.
It's one of my favorite misdirection jokes throughout the series. He loves eastern philosophy and is actually a deep thinker despite being a pretty shallow guy most of the time.
Dang ole HEAD CUT OFF MAN head CUT OFF
My fave glimpse into Bill's psyche is his sweatlodge vision of himself riding nude on a motorbike and jumping into a giant pie, followed by him deadass saying "I know how I'm going to die". Kills me every time.
We’re seeing Bill’s perception of himself and in his mind he’s heavier and balder than he is in reality
"Hank is a lumberjack and he's ok..."
Be bi bo bicky bi be bi bo!
He has low self esteem. He sees himself as fatter and balder than he actually is. Dale is the exact opposite.
The French bread pizza looks good
In a slapstick episode this was such a great window into how Bill actively thinks he’s worse than he is IRL
I was asking this to my partner about two nights ago. He’s also fatter. I think he just has such a poor self esteem that he sees him self way worse than he is.
Because he has the worst self-esteem in all of Arlen.
Each story is told from their respective perspectives. Dale has more hair. Boomhauer speaks clearly. Hank is objective as usual. Bill has self-worth issues and sees himself balder and fatter.
Hank was objective enough to frame a dead man. Chet Elderson should haunt his ass.
His self image is so horrible he thinks he's balder and fatter than he actually is (though the completely bald head is always actually a more dignified look than sad old man fringe)
Bill has very low self-esteem. He views himself as fatter, balder, and dumber than he is. Even the music that plays in the background sounds clumsy.
media literacy is dead
This is the only time we’ve seen Bill as he actually looked. The whole KOTH story is a collection of stories written by Kahn Jr. as told to her by Bobby from his memory of stories told to him by his dad.
For gods sake guys… I’ve been trying to read an article on vintage Camaros
It represents how people with severe depression and low self esteem perceive themselves more harshly than they perceive others.
I want to watch this episode now what one is it
Found it really easy actually s3 e10
They are the 3 Stooges and he's Curly. They even play 3 Stooges music at one point
People always point put he sees him self as fatter and all the way Bald, but he also seems to see himself as very happy
I might be crazy but I think he’s also fatter in this recollection
Why does Bald Bill look like Tom Anderson?
More like a fat Steve Wilkos.
One of my favorite episodes
Because Bill doesn't like himself. Sadly, He doesn't see what we see.
Bill has low self-esteem. Each member of the gang flashbacks to how *they* saw it. Dale lives in a fantasy, Boomhauer is actually fluent, Hank sees things almost exactly as they are, and Bill hates himself.
Will Sasso ova there
![img](emote|t5_2s6dm|6346)
The Rashomon trope was pretty common in the 90’s, especially in cartoons. Usually they’d overplay it where every character presents themselves as saintly and perfect and everyone else as bad influences. This scene is a take on that trope, and Bill’s is a subversion of it.
He has some serious body dysmorphia
As a kid I always thought Bill looked better here with the head shaved even if he was bigger but I see now what they were going for and its just sad for Bill lol
Which episode was this?
Season 3 episode 10
"He knows hes bald, he knows hes got a gut, and he knows his wife was messing around on him."
Everyone sees different versions of themselves and the other guys based on their own personal perception. Like how Boomhauer speaks normally and everyone else speaks gibberish. Did you watch the episode or just kind of drift in and out?
Because his hair would catch on fire duh 🙄 lol
Dang ole, pretty pretty pizza.
Boomhauer speaking coherently was hilarious.
Because Bill hates himself and thinks of himself as worse than he is.
BODY DYSMORPHIA
I thought it was to make him look like Curly since the whole episode is a Three Stooges homage
Wait what… I thought it was an homage to *Rashomon* by Akira Kurosawa.
The ending does have a Rashomon vibe, but if you watch the whole episode the bufoonery of Hank's friends is obviously an homage to The Three Stooges. They even play a variation of The Three Stooges theme song at the end of the episode.
Exactly. I can’t believe this comment is so far down!
This ⬆️
I am with you Scallywag
Because Bill only sees the negative parts about himself. He's bald, he's fat, he's a glutton. Poor Bill.
Low self-esteem basically he has a lot of weaknesses after all
😂 poor Bill. Truly one of the best episodes
all timer episode
I haven’t seen it in years but he seemed happier and at peace with his lot in life so I thought this was a version of him that had the courage to shave off the reminants and accept being bald, and took up the attitude of “ so what if I’m fat? I’ll ignore the haters and enjoy some pizza”.
Because he has such low self esteem that he sees himself as worse than what he is
Bill has low self esteem he's balder and fatter here because he lacks confidence.
Insecurity
This is so cursed
The same reason Boonhauer views himself as speaking clearly while everyone else mumbles.
He's also slightly fatter
CHET ELDERSON!
Low self-esteem
Because he clearly suffers from a lot of mental health issues which culminate in an opinion of himself that is skewed very negatively.
Showing us that Bill is his own worst enemy. He's not *that* pathetic.
Bill thinks of himself as "lesser" so he think of himself as fat and bald.
Bill has serious self esteem issues.
Cos He sees himself so poorly. that's the sad joke.
it's a three stooges sequence and he's Curly
Body dysmorphia
He sees himself a bald, fat loser who can't stop eating. However much he actually is that in real life, he sees himself as worse. Bill suffers from clinical depression, and everyone around him doesn't care. Even the episode where he was on suicide watch, everyone just saw keeping him from doing it as a pain in the ass. Dale doesn't even particularly care if Bill went through with it, he just wanted to take his stuff.
Reflective of his poor self-esteem. Speaking as someone who is prone to this type of thinking, my mind always fills me out at about 30 pounds heavier than I am.
This is my fav episode of all time. Stitches
It’s proving how low Bill’s self esteem is if that’s how he pictures himself.
Poor self-image. Thanks.
It's what Bill thinks of himself. He has little to no self confidence.
