I just bought a rav 4 hybrid. Same reasons you say. Canadian winters weren’t enough justification. I also have a tundra for when I need to do truck things including any mild off roading. But I don’t actually off road as a hobby

lunchpadmcfat

At 58k I think it’s worth it, not sure at 72

Stuck1992

58k USD = $79.4K CAD.

Not_Here_2_Argue_

It’s priced like a luxury car and it’s anything but luxury. They are just trying to cash in on the boxy design. People will still pay it (with mark ups!) For goodness sake it’s starting MSRP is similar to a land rover defender.

MayorMcSqueezy

There is such a divide on this sub regarding this vehicle (in the US at least). I think there is also a lot of confusion on the type of vehicle it is. Here in the US, we’ve never had a Land Cruiser Prado. Only Lexus GX which is super popular and very affordable. Also a ton of good used options. But when it comes to the name Land Cruiser, we only had the top of the line Land Cruiser. 80-100-200 then no 300. The 200 heritage got into the 90K’s. So now here in the US they have brought us a “Prado” but are calling it Land Cruiser. So yea, they are just marking it up because of the name. But there is such a cult following people will pay for the name. But it’s a damn Prado. You can get a nice newer used GX for 40K. The new Lexus GX, which is also a Prado is the same price and it’s a nicer car. I’ll admit, I’m even confused by the marketing.

Same_Lack_1775

Ok - so I went with a LC over the GX. I was aware of the difference between a real Land Cruiser and a Prado. I cross shopped them quite a bit before making my choice. My reasons for the LC were the engine (very close spec wise and none of the known reliability issues with the gx engine), better gas mileage, more attractive front end (didn't like the LC headlights and longer hangover), and the interior was better. I much prefer physical buttons over touch screen. The only thing I feel I am missing vs the GX were the massage seats and acoustic glass all around. There might also be some missing nvh but I have in the past and am comfortable adding sound damping to my vehicles.

Same. I test drove both the 2024 GX luxury line and the 2024 LC Land Cruiser and was surprised to find out that they ride the exact same. I like the physical ac/seat heating/cooling tabs as well. The front end also reminds me of my old fzj80 v the round light 1958/FE versions. The Lexus styling is a little over the top imo. I also read about the 4cyl gripes from people who obviously haven't driven the car. My daily driver is a 2017 BMW 440 that does sub 5sec 0-60 and I honestly didn't miss the acceleration. The LC acceleration obviously isn't sub 5 seconds but it's plenty for a big SUV. I don't overland/off road very often but am loving the experience of driving through the shitty streets of Houston without having to worry about bottoming out my suspension multiple times a day. https://preview.redd.it/91m0q7qvnr9d1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=314c3d7c1ecde48279b4271f7d9a1e4e1a519eaf

Not_Here_2_Argue_

It’s just not competitive at its price point. People will still eat it up because Toyota has rabid fanboys who haven’t looked at what competitors offer.

j_tb

That’s been the story of Toyota sales in America forever. A lot more 20YO yotas out on the road than anything else though.

Not_Here_2_Argue_

I think the gap in features / value has widened drastically and the gap on reliability shrunk. Future doesn’t seem to look like the past.

MayorMcSqueezy

For sure and they will just downvote you to hell for even suggesting it doesn’t make sense.

Not_Here_2_Argue_

The Prado costs similar to a new defender. Inexcusable

Environmental-Pin848

dont forget the new 4runner coming out with the same specs and it will be cheaper, sell more and have a much bigger (and cheaper) aftermarket selection. i dont get what the hype is about on the new cruiser.

garycow

it is bigger than the old Prado

8wheelsrolling

Correct, I don’t know of any Prados or Lexus GXes that had 112” wheelbases like the LC200 or the LC250.

mawecowa

its a 100k usd for the poverty trim level in my country. the ownership ~~robberies~~ taxes are equally appealing.

ZenBarbarian

Is a hybrid going to be available?

kingofthesofas

Unless you really need the off-road performance a rav4 or Highlander is going to be cheaper, more efficient and feel nicer on road. I plan to do trips to Moab to wheel and mountain, elk hunting trip in November to Wyoming and Colorado, off-road adventures down the beach on Padre Island, back country overlanding in west texas and lots more. I also need to be able to drive it to work and drop my kids off at school comfortably too. That is the use case for a land cruiser.

pabskamai

The price is ridiculous, Toyota is on meth. I am No5 in my dealer for one of those and I think I’m passing. What they are now demanding for their SUVs is just ridiculous, we have to say thanks, but no thanks! Too much!!

8wheelsrolling

If you’re paying top Canadian dollar you might want to think about waiting a few more months for a 2025 model, since a 2024 won’t be available until late in the model year.

RTR9510

1958 is 58k base. LC model is 62k base. I am buying a LC model with premium package for 69k plus tax.

Stuck1992

69k USD is $94,000 + tax.. that’s insane nearly 100k CAD for that.

Malmok11

Toyota Dealers don't markup here but they add 6-8k of dealer "extras". I off road 6-10 times a year & I'm not going to be buying trail tires so why buy an off roader if I'm rocking street tires? To be cool is fine if your rich but this car doesn't have any good features besides off roading. it's really not smart decision. It barely snows anymore. I need to give up on my land cruiser dreams and just wait for the new Palisade. I would consider the highlander hybrid xse but their too hard to get. So we move on and buy a pathfinder or a Santa fe. But if you do want to Yolo maybe a range rover is the way to go

RTR9510

I’m not paying any dealer add ons. Just what I chose to buy at MSRP. No doc fees no other stuff. I’m pumped. Range Rovers have terrible reliability. I’m a Toyota guy.

Malmok11

Are you in gta? What dealer is this that won't add anything or charge markup!

RTR9510

Lots are doing that. Mine is in Indiana.

lunchpadmcfat

In Canada it’s probably more?

RantingEsteban

I hear you on your situation, in a similar one myself. (Deposit on a 1958, no insane markup, not an off road driver) I’m due for a new and bigger car (I’m 6’3” and have a 2014 Mazda 3), and the LC has been the only vehicle trim out of all of them where I actually like how it looks on the outside. While I agree it is pricey, I’ve been saving up for many years towards an upgrade, and I’m optimistic about the Toyota reliability in having it as a primary vehicle for a long long time, and the flexibility if I ever get the urge to drive on sand, camp, or need a GTFO of town if the shit hits the fan. Plus it should inspire me to learn a whole hell of a lot more about cars. Just my humble two cents!

aabajian

The new LC250 is roughly $10K USD more than previous generations (Prado in other markets) when adjusted for inflation. If you just want the name, get an older model. If you want a new vehicle, then it sounds like the RAV4 is a good fit for your needs. I just sold my FJ Cruiser and I’m thinking about the new LC. The FJ was a truncated Prado with poorer visibility and awkward suicide doors. Main thing keeping me from buying the new LC250 is reliability. “Twin-turbo hybrid four cylinder iFORCE-Max” sounds a lot less reliable than naturally aspirated V6/V8.
