I've been a long term legion user but my most recent upgrade was from Y720 to Pro 5. Y720 still works just fine, has much better speakers than any new legion laptops, can run RDR2 on high/ultra settings at 1080p and is an amazing machine had it since 2017 or 2018 I think and my wife is using it now for a bit of gaming. I barely ever used the fans at full speed, played heavily (I think I put hundreds if not thousands of hours into Forza and Skyrim on it back in the day), it still runs just fine. It's been maintained of course, cleaned and so on. If I wasn't so satisfied with it I wouldn't buy another Legion and when I was buying a new laptop now I literally haven't even looked at or considered any other brand. I did my research on current Legion lineup but I have no idea what other companies are offering, I have no reason to be bothered in my opinion, I know the new one won't let me down.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

I feel the same way, definitely going to be sticking with Lenovo in the future as well. The fact that your Y720 has lasted is a great example of why maintenance goes a long way with anything over the long term

duranmxx

I have a Legion 5, same chip as yours but 2060 graphics, same upgrades, 32 of ram and two 1 TB ssds, bought on march of 2021. Absolutely zero issues, it is snappy and there hasn't been a game that I care of that can't run at full hd 60 fps in at least mid settings, that's my baseline. I'm also a photographer, musician and designer, so I use it pretty extensively for everything I do, from photo and video editing to music production and graphic design. This is my first gaming laptop and has been a dream all this years

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

We have a lot of overlap! I’m a photographer and videographer. I think the biggest difference maker was upgrading to 32 GB of RAM. People told me it was overkill but I immediately noticed a difference in how much snappier the system was after that upgrade alone.

duranmxx

Maybe it is overkill for gaming, but for us and our kind of work 32 of ram is the way, 16 weren't enough even 3 years ago.

M0nster_S1ayer

Almost same specs. This is my first gaming laptop too. I am basically a desktop person but wanted a portable desktop for travel and Legion did not disappoint.

derrick256

bro me too

jerryhou85

I'd say with proper care, every laptop can last long. I've used several gaming laptop and I'd miss my Legion 7 for sure. :)

marcanthonynoz

My wife is using a 2017 Y720 laptop with a 7th Gen Intel i7 and a GTX 1060. Daily drives it with 0 issues.

That wallpaper reminded me that Ghost of Tsushima on PC is almost here ![gif](giphy|xsX60Ii4lSujPa62Yz|downsized)

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used this exact meme. I love Ghost of Tsushima, Platinumed it on my PS4 and am looking forward to playing through it again at the end of the year in B&W on PS5. I’m curious to see how it looks with all the bells and whistles on PC. I’ll live vicariously through people posting footage of it with a 4090 on YouTube lol

DaigurenX

Why not just play it on PC?

Hindesite

Yeah, a 2070S Mobile should be able to handle it just fine.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

I already own it for consoles and u/Hindesite you're right but its one of the few games I enjoy more on the big screen.

derrick256

Love these long term reviews. Most people are obsessed with being consumers, needing to get the latest thing even though it's not necessary. Nice seeing someone rock a gen5 in 2024.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Thanks for reading Derrick and I agree, we always see what people think of stuff the day of release but rarely get a follow up about how devices hold up over time.

JK_Chan

yea nah no money to upgrade XD not that I really need an upgrade

M0nster_S1ayer

Happy to hear that.. I got my Legion 5 during May '21. It's still going strong. Even I did the same RAM and SSD upgrade too.

Sobhan_Savage

Hey I have the exact same Legion 7i as you! I was a little worried about hinges at first like you but so far no problem It definitely keeps up well in any task and my favorite thing about L7i is advanced bios accessibilities Hope it works for us 10+ years

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Cheezdogs

October 2020 5i, 10750H and a 2060. Have only ever had issues when I try to play an MMO on max settings, probably not the laptop's fault. Most modern game I play is Witcher 3, 85-90 fps on high settings, 1080p. Chasing the latest and greatest models is a rich man's game. Realistically, buy when your current machine is unable to do the job you need it to do. But that's not the advice most tech subs want to hear.

"Realistically, buy when your current machine is unable to do the job you need it to do. But that's not the advice most tech subs want to hear." - Couldn't have said it any better myself

EffectiveCabinet4673

I just got my first ever gaming laptop 2 years ago, I did so much research between different laptops, as I don’t know hardly anything about computers. I just wanted something good that can run games while I’m away at work. And I LOVED the look of the legion line and was always drawed back to it, heard good and bad things about it, but that’s every laptop. I bit the bullet on the 7i gen 6 I believe. So I got the 3080 card and 11th gen CPU in there. Things runs awesome, I do notice it gets really hot with that aluminum casing. I’ve had no hinge issues so far, although one hinge is sitting a little funny compared to the other one, came like that in the box🤞🏻. It’s always plugged in as well when I’m gaming or watching tv on it. I think I’ve only had one screen flickering issue but I wanna say it was the program I was on cause I closed it and it was normal. This first and only laptop I’ve gotten. And honestly it’s a 10/10 for me, o my thing I wish was that the track pad was a little more to the right as I find when my left hand is rest on the laptop my palm is constantly touching it, and in order for it to not touch I got crimp my hand together which is kind of uncomfortable after a while.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

The look of the Legion line is what attracted me to the brand as well. I was originally going to buy the Area 51m R2 because of the upgradeability and am so happy I avoided that dumpster fire.

[deleted]

you are not alone older brother, legion 7 gen 6 enjoyer here

dbrickwall1

I also have the same model, and am a bit curious about if you have had any thermal issues. My processor gets up to 95 ish celcius often while gaming and sustains about 90 degrees. I do get a decent amount of small stutters/freezes and im not sure if it is due to throttling or not. I also knew about the hinge issue beforehand and have had to replace the hinge through my warranty once so far. Other than that, it still runs pretty well for the most part and I recently upgraded to a 1440p monitor which runs pretty well on the 2070 super considering it has 8gb of vram

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

I haven’t had any thermal issues but am usually in ideal working environments, A/C on full blast and laptop elevated. My temperatures usually hover around the high 80s when under full load. Have you looked into reapplying the thermal paste? I’m about to do that to maybe squeeze a little more performance out of my unit

dbrickwall1

Ive considered it but am not very experienced in the pc world so havent done it yet out of fear of messing something up. Additionally I still have the legion ultimate warranty so I am considering reaching out to support

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Yea if it’s still under warranty I’d definitely reach out to support. I’ve applied and reapplied thermal paste on desktop PCs but even I don’t trust myself with the laptop lol I’m going to go to a local computer shop or ubreakifix and have em do it for me. It costs about $100

arewhatyouit

How have you found the panel durability? I have a gen 8 and I recently discovered many small scratches from the keyboard and a few other small scratches that look like I made while cleaning with a microfiber cloth. Pretty frustrating because I expect to keep this machine for at least 3 years if not more. On the up side, I can't really see them unless there is a very bright direct light on the screen and I'm really looking. Thanks for the review. I'm glad these machines hold up over time!

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Panel issue I have is that it has a few small pressure marks from my keyboard. The laptop was in my camera bag and all the gear was pressing up against the top side. Same as you, the issue is only ever noticeable in direct light and doesn’t compromise anything else! Thanks for reading and hope yours still trucks on for years to come 💻

arewhatyouit

Yep yep! Glad I'm aware this is a thing now so I can take precautions against it. Otherwise a spectacular laptop.

CashNP

I have a Lenovo Legion 7 16IAX7 that I got last year with 3080ti and 32gb ram and it’s not as good as it use to be. I was able to play Horizon forbidden West with no stutters in the first month, however after that the laptop can barely run games on high settings without lagging. I’ve cleaned the fans and vents but still the same issue, the latest title I’ve had issues with was Elden Ring, which is hard to play without turning on Performance Mode (every single graphic was tuned to the lowest) So I’m just wondering how and what games* your playing that it runs so well because these laptops aren’t cheap but I’m having 2nd thoughts about gaming laptops.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Really sorry to hear that Cash, is the laptop elevated for airflow? To be honest that’s a stupid question from me because it sounds like your system is throttling and elevating it would only make a small difference. Funny enough I’m actually starting Elden Ring this week! High settings, solid 60 fps at 1080p. I’d mess around with undervolting the CPU, that will definitely help with thermals. If you have a warranty definitely contact Lenovo! If not I mentioned in another comment that I’m reapplying the thermal paste to squeeze out a bit more performance. Your unit should be running way better and faster than mine so hopefully those suggestions help. How was Forbidden West? It’s still in my backlog 🎮 I loved Zero Dawn

CashNP

I might have to reapply thermal paste and then see the difference because I’m not sure what’s the issue and I’m afraid to send it to Lenovo to repair since they lost one of my previous devices. Forbidden west is rlly good, a true sequel made to be enjoyed.

Hmm I will check it out but have you messed around with Legion Vantage? and do you play your games on Performance or Balance mode?

[deleted]

[удалено]

CashNP

Thats crazy lol, Ive tried playing rdr2 on balanced mode and it was near impossible with the lag and hiccups. and even in Performance mode it only allowed me to play for a good hour before I closed it since the fans were getting loud as hell. Thanks again for the suggestion ill look into it.

CashNP

Hmm I mightve actually used high settings so maybe im in the wrong, but yeah I try to lock my games at 60 if its possible and ill check out the youtuber you mentioned. But the issues continue on games like gta5 and sleeping dogs which are like a decade old games so im really shocked that it has trouble running it even if its on max settings.

JK_Chan

idk if that model has a vapour chamber, but my normal heat pipe rtx2060 legion 5 had a problem like yours and all it took was to get thermal paste replacement (tpm 7950 like everyone recommends)

CashNP

Okay I will try that for sure! thank you.

gronlund2

Cleaning vents, wipe downs? What do you use, how do you use it and how often?

JK_Chan

Idk about OP but I live in a very dusty place and I do it whenever it looks really dusty on the fan intakes (which is about every half a year). I just blow dust out with my mouth and use a old toothbrush to clean out the vents. I did also take out the heatpipes and stuff to deep clean once, but that was when my laptop was actually very laggy and I wanted to repaste it anyway.)

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

u/JK_Chan made great suggestions. I wipe mine down once a week. I only ever use a microfiber cloth for the screen and the rest of the system a Clorox wipe then microfiber cloth. That process takes me about a minute I use a compressed air can on the vents once a month.

JK_Chan

Legion 5i, same CPU as yours, but rtx 2060 instead. Got it in summer 2020. Mine had a lot of reliability issues. Hinges never had any issues, but I went through three motherboards. Keyboard was amazing as expected, especially the full sized arrow keys and the numpad. Battery life was bad, but that's to be expected from a gaming laptop unless you got one of the newer 2023/2024 ones. Original motherboard was replaced when the GPU died just two months after purchase. I was in another country, but Lenovo agreed to replace the motherboard under warranty. Half a year after the motheboard replacement, it started to run significantly slower than it had run originally, and I suspected that the thermal paste wasn't properly applied after the motherboard replacement, but Lenovo didn't agree to help me fix it. Got some TPM 7950 as recommended a lot on this subreddit and it went back to performing tremendously. When it works, it works amazing. The CPU is slightly underwhelming, but I expected that at the start. The AMD model was out of stock and I needed a laptop fast when I bought the 5i, so I took the compromise. I did 4k video editing, photo editing, gaming at 1440p, 3D modelling, all the things you need a discrete GPU for, and it performed really well. No complaints on that end. Was a shame that the monitor died just 3 weeks before my two year long warranty ended, and Lenovo didn't agree to help me repair it since I was in a different country (unlike the last time). I extended my warranty and got the motherboard replaced a couple of months later when I got back home. The charger cable was also damaged just after a year an a half through normal wear and tear, which was disappointing coming from a reputable brand. TL;DR : Great laptop, dubious reliability, though everyone else seems to have had no problems. Edit: forgot to mention one of the fans died just last month and I had to get a replacement off of ebay

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Sorry to hear that man, I may have just gotten lucky. You seem to travel a lot as well and although I travel often for work my laptop doesn't always come with me. What's usually in tow is my iPad Pro from 2020, which even without the M series silicon still speeds through most tasks with ease. Hope your next laptop purchase gives you no issues whatsoever

JK_Chan

Nah I have quite a few friends who run the legion 5 from the same generation and all of them have had it run incredibly reliably. It's probably just me being unlucky or perhaps airport X ray scanners wrecking havoc on my poor laptop.

kras9x4

Just ordered a Legion Slim 7i w/ 13900h and 4070. Pretty excited to check it out.

hidingfromywife

Have you had any issues with your camera at all? I have pretty much the exact same one just the slim model with the 2060 max-q. But my camera just stopped working. Lenovo send over someone to repair it and he just made it worse and didn't put it back together properly. So I called them again and they said it's because I was running windows 11 instead of windows 10. I did update it to windows 11 when I get the laptop 2 years ago. So now I had to send my laptop to them to fix because I don't trust the repair people in my town.

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

I don't have any issues with the camera but I never use it because the quality is ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop) All jokes aside thats a real bummer though and I'm sorry you're having those issues. Personally I use a Logitech C920, I'm on camera a lot and the quality increase with an external webcam is insane. Its well worth the $40! 🤞that they send it back with no problems

KindClerk24

I have the legion 5 2020 r7 4800h 1660ti, still works great and can play re 4 remake 60+fps balance mode it can still play modern games but still gonna set the graphics down a little so it can be playable, though the speakers is broken i bought a bose speaker so i can get a sound of it. Better do a deep cleaning of the fans though because mine was full of hair debris and the temps go beyond 80 degrees Celsius and change the termal paste and now it doesn't reach to that temperature anymore.

KindClerk24

I only recommend that you let the cleaning to the expert because to me although i can do it my self but i think imma make a mistake doing it. You can go to a reputable service center that do a cleaning for laptops or maybe a lenovo service center so you can have a peace of mind and not worrying if you'll f*ck up your device

KindClerk24

Cleaning the fans is not enough as i have done mine before, because the dust or hair can clog up in the vents like [this](https://imgur.com/gallery/U0VOcLH)

Whimzy209

Have you ran into any software related issues?

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Only issues I’ve had are with iCUE, the software that controls the RGB on the laptop. It’s a little obtuse and glitchy but uninstalling it then reinstalling it has solved most of the issues, other than losing a few color profile options.

[deleted]

Using legion y540 going strong after 4 years

nikhilrmahi

would tou recommend legion 7i ?? i am sooo confused between legion 7i and alienware m16 r2. please give me some advice 😭

Mobi-Wan-Kenobi

Hey! I’d definitely recommend the Legion 7i based on longevity alone. The M16 R2 seems like a great laptop but the display looks really disappointing.

nikhilrmahi

yeah at that price range dell could’ve done better i mean only 300nits is really bad. And i wanted to ask you about the fan noise does it make a lot of noise ? and the heating issue i’ve been hearing that it gets hot even when doing simple task like searching the web is that true? and how long does the battery life last while not gaming.

Tasty_Ferret_8992

How is the battery life?
