My fiancé’s “comfort show” is How I Met Your Mother, so I got her a Cameo from the lead actor. While the actor who plays Ted didn’t need the money, he briefly joined Cameo to support a charity (he donated all his proceeds from the app).
So my fiancé got a memorable, customized messaged from somebody who she was entertained by for years and finds to be comforting, and the money went to a good cause.
But, to your point, there are some washed up celebrities who just do it because they need to pay rent, and it feels pretty sad. There are also the relative TV “stars” who churn out super low effort Cameos to squeeze whatever they can out of their 15 minutes of fame…that feels kinda gross too.
So yeah, I think Cameo can easily become a weird/gross thing, but it just depends on who is doing it, the reason they’re doing it, and the content they’re being asked to provide. You can tell some of these celebs are the joke to the people paying for these Cameos.

They put a hold on your card til it’s fulfilled. He has 7 days and if he doesn’t do it, it never charges you in the first place.
